[MBZ] another Cummins question

2006-07-27 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Would an 04 Cummins 2500 auto be a 4 speed or a 5 speed tranny? The
sticker in the glove box says 4 speed with overdrive I think. Does that
mean it has for gears or its a 4 speed plus overdrive making it 5
speeds? Any trouble with those? Reason I ask, they were pushing an
almost brand new one in the shop at the dealer today with the tranny
out. Ouch. Looked at a few today. First one is an 04 2500 with the
305hp cummins, club cab, auto, SLT I think, long bed, pw, pl, cruise,
CD, etc. 99k miles, price is 19.9k. Next at another dealer 03 auto,
4x4, very basic truck with rubber mats, manual windows, no cruise, no
power locks etc, 40K miles, liked the color better, short bed, 250hp
version cummins(seems WAY WAY slower than the next year), lot price 27k,
internet price, 23.9k, "special" today only price 22.9k. I just didnt
really like that truck, really prefer cruise for long trips. Back to
the first dealer to look at a different truck. Its an 05 with the HO
325hp cummins, long bed, club cab, 6 speed manual, its also a basic
model with no cruise, manaul windows, etc, had 20k miles with factory
warranty still remaining. Price in it was 24.9k. Liked that one but
the spouse cant drive stick and refused to learn. But didnt like the no
options though.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling, what do the dodge people thing about
those prices? And what about the 4 or 5 speed auto?

Must be a fuse somewhere. My 76 115 power windows quit one day earlier this
week. A new fuse seems to have solved
the problem. There are some smaller fuse boxes just ahead of the main fuse box
under the hood. One of them is
windows for sure. Not certain what the others are but might be the sunroof.
Have a look.

You probably have enough time - although it sounds like you got a pretty
good deal - but you'll have trouble telling what happened in the very few
words allowed in the Feedback menu. I believe it's 80 characters - not
enough to tell much of a story.

Good luck with your $5 DVD drive - or is it a $70 DVD drive ;-)

Remember this? So, I stopped by the USPS today and asked them about the
package. I went into it expecting to take a few pictures proving that the
seller short paid the shipping or sent it to the wrong address. It was a
bit
different. Turns out he tried to ship it "Media Mail" to save some 's
on
shipping. As if $65 wasn't enough already Anyway, Media Mail is
subject

to inspection, and they inspected the package and sent it back (because it
wasn't media) to him to pay $2.19 extra for the shipping. That label for
$2.19 made my post office think it was short paid on shipping when
actually
that was the second payment made on the shipping. He tried to save money
on

shipping, was busted, and my package arrived over a week late. That is
shoddy!

Now, what is the time frame for leaving feedback? I'm gonna negative him

Re: [MBZ] Electrical Theory

2006-07-27 Thread LarryT
Thanks for everyone's comments - it certainly makes sense to happen the
opposite to what I said - i.e., the alt. dies and takes the battery down
with it.

The reason this came up today is both components appear dead. The battery
shows <1 volt and the alt's output iis 12.4v @3000rpm. I believe 13.5-14.0v
is the specs. or something close to that. Got a new battery and ordered a
alt from Rusty -- I was surprised when Rusty's price was $90 less than
AdvanceAuto! So I'll replace both and be done with it. I dislike worrying
about this stuff while trying to sqeeze another few weeks out of a dieing
component.

But I had no warning - the car started several times today before the ACC
fan started to come in and out, the SRS and ABS warning lights in the dash
glowed dimly (the Battery light was not lit, exc during the startup test)
other than that there was no warning. I turned it off at my son's house
while I looked for any obvious problem like a loose battery connection - and
when I tried to start it it barely turned 3/4 revolution. Luckily, I had
bought one of those jumper boxes to keep in the trunk - I had charged it
when it arrived and this was the 1st time I needed it - it worked perfectly
as advertised. At $59 it was worth it although I could've called the 800
MB help since the dealer was a few miles away.

But this has been my experience with other cars also - no warning until it
won';t start - no dash warning light - just a surprise when I get ready to
go somewhere. My 67 MGB did get a glowing generator light when the gen
brushes went south but that was the only time I ever had an actual electr
warning light warn of an impending failure.

Thanks for the great discussion on this - and thanks to Rusty for the
excellent service - if only UPS could perfect their Star Trek "Transporter"
and make instant delivery the norm rather than make believe. ;-) Can you
imagine the revolution in shipping *that* would cause? It'd be like the
change from Pony Express to the Fax machine.

With Marshall's experience I guess what happened to me must go in the
co-inkydink column.

Take care all -

And lead-acid batteries are finicky about being under-charged. If you
consistently under-charge one, maybe due to an alternator that's on its
way out, it loses capacity. Deep-discharging a starting battery (i.e.,
running it completely flat) also reduces its capacity. They're never
quite the same again, even if they appear to charge back up OK.

I'll buy that theory. My 240D ate like 5 (I can't remember exactly) alternators
before I replaced the battery and hasn't eaten any since...

So now unless I know for sure that the battery is really new I'll replace it
when I replace the alternator. I kicked myself around alot because the battery
was only $65 at Autozone when I did replace it. I wasn't paying anything for
the replacement alternators but it wasn't worth $65 in hassle.

I have a theory about alternators and batteries - now, me being a

only learns enough electrical info to fix what is broken at the moment,
my
education of electrical problems has been hands on - most often trial
and
error unless I have some helpful cohort who is leading me along or I've
found a book wiht very simple instructions.

I've seen this, "thing", a couple of times - a battery will die and
the
alternator will die at the same time. My theory is the alternator is
working extra hard trying to keep the battery charged - which it can;t
do
because the battery is shorted, etc - so the alt dies because it's
running
wide open almost all the time - and summer comes along and the added
electr
needs of ACC and the AC blower - creates even more demand.

Any validity to this or has it just been a co-inkydink on my 99 Camry
and 91

Re: [MBZ] new eBay shipping fraud-update

2006-07-27 Thread Dave Wakin

Did the auction state actual shipping or was it flat rate?

A lot of times, to avoid eBay fees, the seller inflates the shipping and
states it is fixed. They only pay fees based on the selling price, not
shipping. I always consider shipping as part of my bid price for comparable
items and bid accordingly.

That is

Re: [MBZ] Electrical Theory

2006-07-27 Thread Levi Smith

I've heard that theory. And it does make sense. I've not experienced it
though.
But yes, it certainly seems like an almost dead battery could stress the
alternator. It must be a certain problem though. Cause in my experience,
the battery gets too weak to start the car and that's the point you replace
it. It doesn't seem like you're driving it with a dead battery for very
long..

On the other hand, running around with an alternator that's not charging
your battery is definitely going to be only hurting your battery more and
more. Mine just died at one point and the idiot light came on, I drove an
hour home and replaced it. No battery problems.

$110 at the newly redecorated Roosevelt in New York City [5th Ave about 2

until you pay, but if you stick with a 4 star in the area you want you can't

Nowhere near the $20, but pretty good for NYC.

Re: [MBZ] [Banned] cheap winter beater for sale -- keep your Benz out of the salt

2006-07-27 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin

Is this a joke? Got any pics?

LT Don wrote:

Ok, sports fans, daughter-unit bought a new college car this evening. Her
high school car is for sale. Someone is going to get one hell of a deal on
this -- in fact, I am thinking of buying it myself.

1989 Pontiac Sunbird. Butt-cute (has been sideswiped and the driver's door
closes only to the first stop -- easily fixed at your local pick & pull).
Some minor rust issues but no rust-thru's. I was planning to hit it with
POR-15 before she headed off to college, but not now that it is for sale.

By the way, the car's name is Kurtie. Took 3/4 tank of fuel to go round trip
from home to Kansas City -- probably about 35 mpg+. $200 audio system (what
else would a high school student have?), AM/FM/CD. I still have not found
the on/off button on it, so when I drive it I just turn the volume to zero.
I do NOT like Megan's choice of radio stations. Brand new left front tire (4
weeks ago) and new exhaust system (2 weeks ago).

The important stuff is under the hood. Bullet-proof four-banger engine. Only
80K on the car. Brother-in-law (my mechanic) installed new water pump,
timing belt and head gasket at about 65K. Absolutely no oil loss. Had
Mobil-1 until the last oil change (2 weeks ago) since when we bought it when
Megan was 15 (she is now 19).

You could easily drive this car coast to coast a couple of times without
worrying. I am very anal about auto maintenance and that philosophy has
trickled down to Kurtie.

$1000 firm. Pick up in Jefferson IA. Don't bring a car hauler -- you can
drive it home. I will be happy to pick you up at Des Moines or Ames airport
and give you a sofa bed for the night.

Purchase price is less than fixing one winter's worth of rust on your Benz.
No pressure -- this thing will be sucked up within three days of being
advertised. Good, inexpensive, reliable cars are hard to find and this is
definitely one.

Ok -- why is Megan selling it? She was recently involved in a head-on
altercation between a friend's car and a telephone pole (at 35 mph). She got
smacked in the face with airbags. ... Kurtie doesn't have airbags and she
now (having been there) wants a car with airbags.

So, if you want a winter beater or have a high school student of you own you
needs wheels, this would be a good candidate.

And if no one wants it, that is cool. I sort of want it myself.

yea, Im just getting tired of screwing with the alternate refrigerants.

How long is 'long'? Most of my R12 stable, which has lost the R12
due to slow leaks, now leaks at a rate that requires an annual
recharge. I don't know how long it'd last in a pristine system.
Fortunately it's only $7 worth of juice, in my case. And I have

Ok, I was thinking the 90's 300TDt was feeling a bit sluggish. A

A year back I got on the order of 11-12, so something is amiss.

In checking the boost pressure, I find at the ALDA no more than 9
psi, normal for what benz seemed to ship at the time.
If I disconnect the boost pressure line the acceleration is a bit
sluggish, well a lot, and we can't really maintain more than 50 mph
up a hill nearby.
Well that was the same behaviour a year back, still one would think a
non-turbo 300 should do a bit better?

I'll take hints and wanted to ask two questions>

First I'd like to adjust the KKK turbo to bring the boost up to 12
psi, in looking on the web, they all say it's easy, the Garritt is
hard and then explain the garritt.

So how do you adjust the KKK?

Second I'm not sure about the throttle adjustment, the cable to first
IP link does travel all the way, but there is a adjustable metal
slider assembly that then drives
the IP level, I can't find any info on doing any adjustments here
other than the nylon screw to ensure the cable is tight. I'll note in
the past someone
adjusted many things on the pump because they marked each adjustment
point/nut with yellow paint. That's not moved, but I wonder if I'm
getting
full throttle. I realize one can remove the back end of the IP and
perform other more radical changes, but somehow I should be able to
get back to what it had

last summer without resorting to exotic alterations.

Lastly I noticed the mpg drop off by 2 mpg over the last 6 tanks.

Things I've not check

a) main fuel filter
b) exhaust issues

Clear small filter is clean so I don't think the main fuel filter
would be an issue, but I'll replace both filters.

In my experience almost ALL of the power problems I've seen with
OM60x.96 (turbo) engines has NOT been a turbo problem, but accelerator
linkage (when the pedal is pushed the floor, the lever on the injection
pump MUST move to it's full extent) OR an ALDA set too low (or getting
insufficient boost pressure from the intake manifold).

The only test I know of is to see if the boost pressure goes to ~12 psi
by 2000 rpm at full load (were the wastegate opens) and remain near
there (with the wastegate open) all the way out to ~5000 rpm. If the
ALDA isn't set sufficiently "rich" the boost not only won't go to max by
2000 but may NEVER reach 12 psi and the wastegate may never open.

The pressure diagram is located here:

 http://mb.braingears.com/124_DISC1/Program/Engine/602_603/09-0050.pdf
(page 7)

Note that it rapidly raises up from 6.5 psi at 1600 rpm to max (12 psi)
by 2000 rpm and stays there all the way out (with the wastegate
essentially venting any excess boost).

The EPA says you _must_ change the fittings if you change the
refrigerant. Each of the refrigerants has it's own fitting, so (in
theory) you can even tell what flavor has been installed. Also, there
is supposed to be a label/tag somewhere with who/what/when info on the
conversion.

In practice, I have seen lots of converted cars with R12 fittings and
no lables. But I have never seen retrofit fittings on a system with
R12!

Oh timely comment, last night I found in the 90's wagon the 500E
headlamps I have had one high beam dead. They are powered by a dual
feed 30AMP relay and that is fed by a benz dual fuse block out of a
SDL. Struggle with flashlight remove lamp cover behind air box
(difficult), extract bulb (easy), put replacement H3 back in (hard)
mess with tool mirror etc to see. Then think mmm fuses... Grrr. Look,
no they look fine. Try lights, nope, no light on passenger side. Swap
fuses, no light on driver side. Sigh, replace fuses, all is fine,
faulty fuse sure looks ok, but it's not. Grab +30 H3 bulb out of

I'll note we had the brake booster fail (leak) on the 90's 300TDt
last month , this leakdown occurred after a few hours.

Getting in starting the car, and saying the brakes are stiff is an
understatement. You must stand on
them if you expect to stop the car in one's driveway, not a nice way
to find this out, that and as Marshal
notes the engine won't shutoff since the vacuum pump is busy trying
to pull air out of the large vacuum booster.
Wife was not impressed and of course the car sat until the new
booster came in.

Oh and for some reason the German version of the booster was 1/2 the
price of the USA version, must be lawyers there...

On 26-Jul-06, at 5:09 PM, Marshall Booth wrote:

Sorry to keep going on about this - but one more ? - what

Brakes become VERY stiff and it takes a lot of effort to stop the car,
the climate control defaults to DEFROST (full heat) in many cars, the
engine won't turn off with the key and the transmission shift HARSHLY

Marshall:

Headlights are new as of 2004 (hit a deer and took the opportunity to
replace with Euros -- DEPOs, alas, but Euros). Use H4 bulbs.

There is less that 0.5V at the wire when the bulb won't light up, 12V
or so when it does.

This is a pain, as sometimes the headlamp works fine, sometimes not.
The lamp out indicator USED to come on only with the low beams, but is
now on all the time after the first time I use the brakes. Yes, I need
to replace all the lamps (250,000 miles on Tuesday on the way back from

NO! The threaded ring is what secures the prechamber to the head. It's
the threaded ring that requires a special splined wrench (602 589 00 33
00) to remove that commonly cracks. I've NEVER heard of a bad prechamber
in a modern engine (unless someone uses starter fluid to start the engine).

[MBZ] cheap winter beater for sale -- keep your Benz out of the salt

2006-07-27 Thread LT Don

D.

I got a 126 fuse kit from' Mercedes source ' along with it came a small

I replaced -All the fuses with the ' correct' brass ones in the kit .the

Got a mystery for you all -- I have a headlight problem with the 87
300D. Sometimes the left headlight is on, sometimes off (not the bulb,
replaced it). Bulb out warning lamp is on all the time now once I use
the brakes after starting.

I wired direct from the fuse to the headlamp on the right side a couple
years ago for the same problem, didn't want to hassle with running the
wire down.

Any ideas on what is going on? Bulb out warning module? Loose wires?
This is driving me nuts. Rain at night on the Beltway in DC this
weekend was a real pain with only one headlamp!

Thanks!

The headlight sockets in 201/124s need to be cleaned from time to time
and MAY need to be replaced (they MAY char). If the bulb out lamp lights
when the brake pedal is pressed, one of the 3 brake lights (or contacts)
is intermittent.

Hi Don,
Nope, gas engines create all the vacuum they need. Only diesels need pumps
to provide vacuum. BTW, only the '85 and newer (as far as I know) have vac
pumps with the possibility of failing and having *bits of metal* get into
the engine where damage can occur. The '85 and older - I'm referring to
W123 mostly - have belt driven pumps - and while they can fail and allow oil
to get to places where it doesn't belong, they are not designed so damaged
vac pump metal can get into the engine.

BTW, diesels *do* produce vacuum but it's so very little it's not enough to
make much use of.

There has been lots of talk about vacuum pumps on here lately. I am
finally concerned. I have had 6 Mercedes in my driving career and I

Perhaps I am lucky or stupid. One question I have is do the gas

Does my car (1990 300SEL 129K) have a vacuum pump?

If so, do I need to consider replacing it according to the Dr. Booth

The older vacuum pumps (7.20209, 7.20547 and older pumps) used on OM61x
diesel engines (last manufactured in 1985) were rebuildable. Many lasted
the life of the engine. When they fail they seldom damaging the engine
or timer. The newer pumps (7.20607) used on OM60x engines (starting in
1984) were NOT rebuildable - had to be replaced if/when they failed. The
older pumps seldom drop parts into the engine. The newer pumps can drop
parts into the chain vault when they fail and that CAN destroy the
engine immediately or later.

Re: [MBZ] W124 A/C next steps..

My A/C in the 87 300TD stopped working. It's been converted to R134a by
one of the previous owners. So I bought a can of R134a + extras that had a
separate gauge. I connected said gauge to the low side port and started
the car and turned the A/C on high. The pressure was in the green -
somewhere btw 45 and 60 psi, I didn't write down the exact number.

I noticed a couple of things:

1) aux fan didn't kick on. I know the fan works b/c if you apply power
directly it runs.

2) compressor clutch didn't engage. I pulled the leads off the high
pressure switch and shorted them, still no clutch engagement.

What's the next thing I should be looking at?

If you jump pins 5-7 of the KLIMA socket, the clutch should engage!

I was lucky that drive did not destroy the engine.

I've driven hundreds of miles after a vacuum pump failure (Pittsburgh to
D.C.)! Not a big deal. If the pump failure doesn't DESTROY the engine
immediately (my guesstimate is that there's maybe a 2-5% chance of
that), the chance of the loose parts damaging the engine subsequently is
considerably smaller (but there is a finite chance of that - and the
longer you ignore the parts in the sump the more chance you give those
parts a chance to damage or destroy the engine)..

That's a *very* troubling statistic! <1 out of 5 will fail seems like a
pretty high number. I guess it's not a safety issue so a recall doesn't
come into play?

Beats the heck out of having to change a timing belt every 60-80kmi!

Sorry to keep going on about this - but one more ? - what indication is
there that the pump has failed? I assume loss of vacuum to the brakes (if
driving) is the most obvious?

Brakes become VERY stiff and it takes a lot of effort to stop the car,
the climate control defaults to DEFROST (full heat) in many cars, the
engine won't turn off with the key and the transmission shift HARSHLY
(bang, bang, bang)!!

by the threaded ring you mean the prechamber, right? Do you know how it comes
out?

What Peter said - EVEN if it doesn't look like that. You need to remove
the threaded ring - it WILL be cracked - REPLACE it. This is quite
common with OM60x engines with inclined injection!

Well I wouldn't say everything was working perfectly though it worked. I

Another question. Is the steering lock a mechanical lock or is it made from
the vacuum? And the 14"mg that should be present be on the brown line to the
ign switch?

I am beginning to susspect the vacuum pump is there a way to test the brake
vaccum assist?

The steering lock is mechanical - completely unrelated to vacuum.
