You just have to make sure it's a Craftsman tool - they also sell a
different brand - Sears perhaps? With limited warranty.

Re: [MBZ] OT- Wireless networking

2007-01-22 Thread woodlandtaylors
Ed,

I have wired half my house with Cat 5E, Quad shield Coax and fibreoptics,
I'm on cable with a Toshiba modem with a Uniden UPI 1868P as the router
(VOIP 10 handset phone system), was using a Belkin router but it was
dropping all the time. The phone router has not dropped once in 3 weeks. The
router leads to a 24 channel switch with drops in most of the rooms. However
getting to the 4th level is a challenge I don't want to take with hard wire
so have just purchased a used Cisco Aironet 340 Series of wireless LAN that
I had planned to plug into a channel on the switch and have wireless
access...I guess I should asked if it would work before purchasing but now
that the subject is being discussed with this setup work.

Benz content just came in from cleaning up the garage; the pellet stove had
it at 60 F on low great work weather. Need to pack heading to LA for a
couple a days or so.

The one I have is somewhat different: ESP (not ASR), multicontour seats,
heated seats, HID headlamps (factory, which come with headlamp range
adjustment and washers) ... although it is a leather/tex mix (tex centers,
leather bolsters) and color 702 (smoke silver)

They are wicked fun to drive... especially in the city. I do miss my 126

Re: [MBZ] Process for installing 300TD's rear suspension struts

2007-01-22 Thread Richard Hattaway
Euan,

Not loads of people answering this, because it is a very expensive and
often un-necessary job.

So I will ask the obvious, what makes you think you need to replace
them? IF they are not leaking fluid in excess of the Mercedes ratings,
they are not bad.

A bouncy or hard ride is not the test for these units, only the leak.
Everything else is caused by another component or two.

The struts (hydraulic cylinders) are replaced from underneath, the
carpet etc in the vicinity of the top of the cylinders must be removed,
but little else.

See the manual for a better description.

Summer is here as well, went fishing on MLK birthday, it was over 70
F, and very sunny.

Au contraire. I had the opportunity to walk through a meticulously restored

From the Museum of Flight's website:

The Museum's carefully restored aircraft is the only flyable B-17 F-model
left in the world. During World War II, it served as a stateside crew trainer.
After the war, the plane was used as a chemical sprayer and fire bomber. The
Museum's Fortress also appeared in movies, including The Thousand Plane Raid
(1968), Tora! Tora! Tora! (1969), and Memphis Belle (1989) during its flying
career. The plane is currently hangared at Renton Municipal Airport in Renton,

Monkeys got in and tore the dash pad off, busted the locks so driver

was not nailed down. Engine compartment is not touched.

Brown leather seats and most of the wood looked great. I am trying to

just offer that on eBay. Might give Gump some pizzazz. Really not

I have for some time been trying to figure out why certain styles appeal
more to certain demographics than to others. Just as an example --
white guys of lower economic income seem to like jacked-up pickup trucks
with big wheels while the Mexicans around here like low-rider trucks
with little wheels and fiberglass body kits. Both groups like loud
mufflers. When I drive my old Eldo convertible, I get little attention
from anyone but (mostly older) black guys who go crazy over it (some
have even made u-turns to come look at it when I have been pumping
gas). Two young black guys driving a FedEx truck went totally ga-ga
over it back before Christmas, and thought I was very cool.

Don't bring out the R word here, it is a known fact among marketers
that certain things appeal to certain demographic elements (targeted marketing) and
they spend money accordingly. But I have always wondered why this is. (Sub)cultural I guess, for
lack of a better term, but that still does not explain why? That Benz (to this white
guy) is just plain nasty, but I can see it appealing to some (for reasons I would like to
understand). The color, the wheels, the image, whatever.

Re: [MBZ] Process for installing 300TD's rear suspension struts

2007-01-22 Thread Euan

Thanks Richard. Yes, I thought the silence was ominous.

The replacement is necessary because our Warrant of Fitness authorities
deem any leak of hydraulic fluid from suspension systems as an automatic
'FAIL'. Invoking Mercedes leak-tolerances falls on deaf ears. Worse
still, the FAIL is registered nationally on the WOF computer system so
that I cannot take the wagon elsewhere (a back-country mechanic, for
instance) for a more sympathetic re-test.

The lower strut mounts on my wagon are dripping hydraulic fluid, though
the reservoir is not noticeably short of the stuff. The evidence
suggests strongly that the struts are leaking. Having obtained
replacements from Australia (a little closer than Rusty's supply shop),
I'll be hugely irritated if the leaks originate elsewhere.

The struts cost me $350 Australian ouch, (sorry, each). That scandalised
SWMBO and brought conjugal access to an abrupt halt; but it was
substantially better than the $NZ1100 each quoted here by the MB
franchise in NZ.

I don't have an MB service manual unfortunately. That's why I have to
keep pestering you erstwhile chaps.

Regards

Euan

We drove a '76 Chevette for 3.5 years so we could afford a baby. By the
time our son was 3 we could afford a 9 year old Mercedes (1973 280). There
has to be a mathematical formula in there somewhere, perhaps in association
with one's zip code at each purchase or entry point...

Hmm maybe. I had an 84 SD until it was knocked from beneath me in
Leesburg. Seeing as how the sunroof popped and the paint chipped off the
rudely forced into intimacy, and the trunk pan split off the frame rail on
the left side, I felt fortunate to escape uninjured. I wanted another 84
SD, or maybe an 85 (I wasn't too into the SDL's) ... Anyhow SWMBO dictated
something newer, and there was a 1999 E300Dt on the lot at a local
dealership, so we snatched it. I just added a second one to replace the
jeep (fishbowl due to a failed windshield seal).

Looking at the safety record of Mercedes, you can't afford to NOT drive
one (given modern drivers). As far as I am concerned that 1984 did its
primary job: To keep the occupants safe in a collision. It also did its
secondary job very well (to haul my butt back and forth to work daily!)

I will say that I am completely and utterly spoiled by one thing on the
newer cars: with the extensive highway driving that I do, I am getting
about 16K between maintenance intervals(!) (So I let the dealer rake me
over for a complete B service everytime just to have independent eyes go
through everything.) Soem stuff, like engine mounts, torsion bars, brakes,
I do, others (Ball joints, control arm bushes) I leave for them. I just
picked up a used Baum/Autoland Scientech D91 (aka iScan) which covers them
and it is AMAZING what information those computers (plural!) will share
with you; theres one for each door, the overhead sunroof switch/dome
switch/etc, airbags, engine, tranny, each audio component in the fiber
ring, traction control, instrument cluster, automatic climate control,
headlamp range adjustment, control panel (the one with the hazard switch
in the middle) etc. I mean if you have a bulb out failure, the computer
will actually tell you WHICH bulb is out (okay not like it is hard to
figure out, but sometimes you forget about the license plate lamps)
...
anyhow wicked cool.. and if anyone needs to have codes pulled or cleared
in the baltimore area, drop a line... I supposedly have coverage from
1988-2001 or so and BMW as well)

2007-01-22 Thread Richard Hattaway
Euan,

If they are dripping, then I think they may qualify as really really
bad. Shame, as they are expensive, as you have learned.

I will do some research and get back to you with a good description of
the job.

Should the SWMBO toss you out, you can take up residence in the back of
the TD with the seat down, basking in the knowledge that you are
sleeping on the best supported non leaking cot in town.

Thanks Richard. Yes, I thought the silence was ominous.

The replacement is necessary because our Warrant of Fitness

still, the FAIL is registered nationally on the WOF computer system
 so
that I cannot take the wagon elsewhere (a back-country mechanic, for
instance) for a more sympathetic re-test.

The lower strut mounts on my wagon are dripping hydraulic fluid,
 though
the reservoir is not noticeably short of the stuff. The evidence
suggests strongly that the struts are leaking. Having obtained
replacements from Australia (a little closer than Rusty's supply
 shop),
I'll be hugely irritated if the leaks originate elsewhere.

The struts cost me $350 Australian ouch, (sorry, each). That
 scandalised
SWMBO and brought conjugal access to an abrupt halt; but it was
substantially better than the $NZ1100 each quoted here by the MB

  Euan,

Not loads of people answering this, because it is a very expensive

So I will ask the obvious, what makes you think you need to replace
them? IF they are not leaking fluid in excess of the Mercedes
 ratings,
  they are not bad.

A bouncy or hard ride is not the test for these units, only the
 leak.
Everything else is caused by another component or two.

The struts (hydraulic cylinders) are replaced from underneath, the

Re: [MBZ] Bad gas recourse - was Saab stranded me in cold

2007-01-22 Thread Potter, Tom E
One thing I haven't heard yet is that some gas stations may not
adequately remove the water that has collected in their tanks from
condensation. Yes, gas station tanks also collect water from
condensation. When I operated stations, we had to pump the water out
every few weeks. We had a dipstick onto which we applied water detector
(in a tube like toothpaste). The detector was blue and would turn red up
to the level of the water. We had a small pump with a long suction that
drew from the bottom of the tank. It would remove the water in 5-10
minutes.

I have no idea if modern stations even do this.

BTW, I did get a tank full of bad gas a few years ago. It cost about
$1000 by the time the fuel system was cleaned and repaired.

cents

hmmm What if I add water to the storage tank? Cheap, easy, and

more bucks. All I have to do is figger out how much water i can put in
the
tank, based on how much water the alcohol will suspend, and the %alcohol
in
the gas...

Now, what if this rube or the rube at the gasoline distributor put in a
little more water than the alcohol can suspend? Or the station rube put
in
water but didn't know the distributor had already added water?
Then there is condensation etc...

Zoltan is stranded Saab won't run

Recourse? add some de-icer to the tank, thaw out the Saab and go

Speaking of where to procure the various vital fluids, anyone have a
good source for Delvac-1 or Mobil-1 Turbo Truck SUV (or whatever
they're calling it this week).

I've grown frustrated with the ever-changing formulations and names of
the retail products, and none of the shops here ever seem to have the
Turbo Trunk SUV that is the Delvac-1 equivalent (or Delvac-1
itself).

No truck stops nearby either...

I'm currently using Chevron Delo which I got in gallon jugs at Sam's
Club, which is working fine but is a little thick on cold days

2007-01-22 Thread Werner Fehlauer
Allan - its not clear where you are geographically, but what I found was
that the major truck stops here carry Delvac1 in the gallon jugs, as do some
of the Wal-Mart's and Sam's clubs (or Mobil1 which is almost as good). I
did manage to locate the Mobil lube distributor, and can drop by his
warehouse (and he will also ship UPS to me) 4 gallon cartons of Delvac1, and
also the 6 qt boxes of Mobil1 ATF. Price came out to be about the same as
at the truck stop, but I was sure of getting what I wanted at the
distributor.
The equivalent of Delvac1 (and not sure that its still available) was the
Mobil1 Truck and SUV oil. And in a pinch, I have used Mobil1 15W-50,
especially in my JD tractor.

Re: [MBZ] Track Time and MBCA events

2007-01-22 Thread Werner Fehlauer
John - IMO, everyone that enjoys M-B cars or even their history is missing
something if not a member of the club. Turns out that most join just for
the magazine, but there are enough people with specific interests that are
enjoyable (for the most part) to follow or participate with in events.

Event costs vary, depending on whether you are helping rent track time,
enjoying a good dinner, or just attending a show and tell. I've seen
everything from free (admittedly rare nowadays) to several hundred dollars,
such as Starfest, where we have 3 days of track time, 2 banquets and a
reception. Here in South Jersey, we try to have a few $5 dollar events,
where we make a buck or two for the section and contribute the rest to a
charity for things like going to the Philly auto show, or a small tech event
at an indy shop.

You just should keep taking a look at the various web sites, starting with
www.mbca.org, which can lead you to special events and also section web
sites. In your case, checking in on www.gws-mbca.org would make sense.

You probably need to clear some cookies and browsing history. IE is bad
about keeping all kinds of junk in weirdly-named folders, might affect
FF but not sure how. I've never encountered such problems with
Firefox. In Firefox check your connection , privacy, content settings.
You might need to reload FF to make sure something wasn't corrupted on
the install.

David supplied answers to problems that have vexed me for a long time,
since college and when I started driving. This list is cool, but I am
thinking I had better stop hanging around it.

Because people tend to hang around with people who are in their
demographic group, and people determine what's normal by constant
reference to people around them. (This is also why engineering school
campuses are the way they are. If you take a bunch of geeks and give
them only other geeks around them for reference, it's pretty obvious
which direction the spiral is going to go. ;) )

[MBZ] Radial engines in altitude and control issues, and an IPAQ wireless connection question

2007-01-22 Thread Billr
I drove around mountains for a couple of years and while I never developed
the style of the VA natives, have no problems with them. My wife is a
basket case every time we get to one. As an experiment I let her get behind
the wheel - no problem for her then. She can drive in the mountains fine -
but can't be a passenger there.

Question for the computer savvy amongst us: I have an IPAQ with built
in wireless. I can connect to my home network fine [2 computers at opposite
ends of the house and a Linksys wireless router] but have had no luck with
getting onto the internet with it, or even getting it to sync that way.
When cradled I can use it to browse [but why would I want to], but wifeless
is a no-go. Any suggestions? I often download my mbz email to read while I
am out - quite frustrating when I can only do 'old stuff'.
Thanks -

Pep Boys has been a reliable source of G-05. It was $11.99 at our local

Hardest part is disconnecting the hydraulic fittings
through the spring. PITA. Otherwise torx head bolt
under the carpet in the rear, just behind rear seat
where it folds down. Removal from A-arm is simple.

These rarely go bad. Make sure it is not your pump,
the check valve, the ride height sensor arm, or the
air reservoir things. you can rebuild the valve for
next to nothing. There are a bunch of posts on how to
test the system. You can even replace the ball joints
on the bottom of each cylinder with a special tool, as
they sometimes go bad before the rest of the unit.

range rpm due to rereduced volumetric efficeincy.

Let me make sure I understand what you're asking real quick. :) On
the volumetric efficiency vs RPM are you talking about the amount of
available air for combustion inside the cylinder based on RPM (things
like boost and/or losses changing that over the RPM band)?

If thats the case, then the amount of injected fuel (injection charge?)
does have different limits across the RPM range. The reason for it is
that if you start injecting too much fuel you will start generating
clouds of black smoke (partially burned fuel). I have a graph in a
Bosch tech book that shows the max injected volume vs RPM and it does do
what you describe. I can post that if you would like that extra
verification :)

As to HOW thats done that is where the complicated part (IMO) of our
governors come into play. In the governor used on the MW pumps I
believe it is called torque control. There are very few people who
truly understand exactly how it works (and how to change it), and I am
certainly NOT one of them.

If you are interested in learning more about how IPs work I'd highly
suggest this book It talks about all kinds of IPs and how the
governors work, etc. As well as a fairly detailed overview of diesel
combustion, etc. I sure enjoyed reading it and learned a lot :)
