compression or glow plug problem. If you don't get smoke, you have a
fuel supply problem.
If it cranks slow cold, have the starter current draw checked. If'
it's over 1000 amps, get a new starter.

The temp sensor under the front bumper is shorted, most likely. Mine
on the "new" 87 300D reads +10x or +110x all the time -- right side is
black so I don't know what digit is showing, and this is a pain since
it's in centigrade...

If it runs fine after you replace the pump, and the cost of the pump
and tranny replacement isn't prohibitive, I'd say it could be a good deal.

I am assuming you are talking about the OM314? It is the same basic
motor as an OM352 which is more common over here (in those big mercedes
moving trucks, unimogs, etc) so parts sould not be hard
