Re: [MBZ] Clean Oil Off Driveway

2008-02-11 Thread E M
I just make a paste of Tide, and let it sit over night, then scrub the
following day with a hand brush. Works well if the oil hasn't really
penetrated the surface. I have interlock, which is pretty porous, and it
works quite well.

Re: [MBZ] Beaver/Otters

2008-02-11 Thread barry Stark
Well, I never had the opportunity to ride in an Otter or Beaver but I'm
racking up some serious time in the cabin of Twin Otters. My department does
a lot of work designing and testing prototype sensors and we very often use
Twin Otters, with a big hole in the belly to look down from, as our test
platform. I know they are not quite the same as the singles but man are
their big brothers ever the ultimate work horse. You can pile almost
anything in the cabin at almost any station and those planes just shrug it
off. Truly impressive utility airplanes. Not only that you can slow flight
while taking data if required. We use Twin Otter International out of
Colorado and Las Vegas for our rides. Scott Siebold has about 17 of these
great planes. He runs Scenic Airlines for lookie lou flights over the Grand
Canyon with most of them and the other 6 or 7 he uses for a mix of smoke
jumpers during the fire season or research and aerial survey the rest of the
year. Take a look at the research ships at his web site www.twinotter.com to
see the kind of things we stuff into and fly in these birds.

All of Kenmore's Beavers and Otters are on floats. If they pick one up for
rebuild on wheels, they barge them from Renton Airport which is at the other
end
of Lake Washington. On Canadian fishing charters, Campbell River for
example,
I've seen some BIG salmon pulled out of the float storage compartments.

Re: [MBZ] MBTex/leather interiors on eBay - reputable?

2008-02-11 Thread LarryT
Hi Rusty,
As long as we're venting ;-) another frustrating thing - The "Specials"
Page has been blank for all the years I've been visiting BuyMBparts.com as
well as "Selecting Parts" page. But these are minor inconvienences. The
thing I wish for more than anything else is being able to find *any* part I
need for my cars.

BTW, I didn't see a notice about the threshold for Free Shipping being moved
up to $90 (IIRC) vs the previous $75. But that was probably my oversight.

The BuyMBParts business is the best MB parts business I've had the pleasure
to use.

Hi Sunny,
Bought some "Phenocane" which evidently is now called Curcumin or Super
Curcumin from a place called Ageless Cures. It says (the Bottle) Super
Curcumin C3 Complex w/Bioperine Natural Immmune Defense Antioxidants
1000mg - 100 caps.

Paid approx $30 incl shipping. The bottle says little about fighting Pain -
it talks much about helping Cancer patients. I hope this works - would love
to get away from some of the narcotics -

We'll see how it works and report ;-)

Marshall (or maybe Stu Ritter) also claimed that the real stuff just fit
better than the American stuff and was less prone to leak prematurely.

If you ever need it now and can't wait for Rusty to send it, check with
the VW dealer, who carries the same stuff. It is kinda spendy at the MB

My understanding is that the cloth covered lines persuade seepage leaking

Well, sure, but the 911 can fly down the Autobahn flat out all day long

oil

The core is pretty well buried up under the dash. The blower fan took me a good
half a day, I imagine the core would take a whole day.
I just want to limp the truck along until next winter when I've saved up some

Although I do know of a '98 S10 extended cab with only 48,000 miles for a good

I'd stay away from that sealant stuff, and just change the core. That
sealant stuff can plug holes, and everything else too. I always worry
 about
that kind of stuff being in all the coolant passageways. I changed a
 heater
core once that let go right at the joint where the hole connects. The
connection was plastic, so when it let go, it did so in a BIG way! I
 made
sure the replacement core was all metal. I wasn't far from home but
 still
managed to go through 30 litres of mineral water I had to pick up at a
 store
on the way back. So, 30 litres of water in less than 4 kms is a pretty
 good
leak. hee hee.

As the cars get older here, you see a big spread in prices as they age, the
better ones fetching a good price. Some of the newer cars, like a E320 can
be had for $8000 or less all day long too. I've stayed away, as I've seen
more rust on most '99 than I do on the older W124s.

I've seen lots in the $1500-2000 range, but for the most part, they're tired
old beasts. When you factor in running around and looking at them all, and
just missing the few that are good, and cheap, sometimes it's just easier to
say, bring me a good one and I'll pay you for it. I'm sure I could get the

is it worth taking a risk on such a car? I don't know, as everyone says,
they're build like tanks, if it looks ok, maybe it is worth taking for
$2-3000? What are the groups thoughts? Other than a few bits like the self
leveling rear end, is it that much more to keep in good shape than a 420?

.9975 US per CDN$ last time I checked (this afternoon).
I don't know about cars, especially the unobtainable rust-free variety,
but the exchange rate on used motorhomes still seems to be about 2:3 , even
after taking the costs of fetching one from 1000 miles away into account.

I was going to say something about Ed's prices being in Canadian
bucks, but then realized the exchange rate is such that it doesn't
matter anymore.

Yeah, those do seem high for gasser 124s and 126s Maybe my POV is
skewed since they are a dime a dozen on the west coast. You can buy
them all day long for $2K or less from used car lots---probably even

I'd stay away from that sealant stuff, and just change the core. That
sealant stuff can plug holes, and everything else too. I always worry
about
that kind of stuff being in all the coolant passageways. I changed a
heater
core once that let go right at the joint where the hole connects. The
connection was plastic, so when it let go, it did so in a BIG way! I
made
sure the replacement core was all metal. I wasn't far from home but
still
managed to go through 30 litres of mineral water I had to pick up at a
store
on the way back. So, 30 litres of water in less than 4 kms is a pretty
good
leak. hee hee.

Re: [MBZ] Looking at 2 cars.

2008-02-11 Thread E M
Yeah, I know, and I paid top buck for the high mileage one I have now. I
got to the point a few years ago were I was so tired of looking at junk and
so called "mint" cars, I now just call ppl up and say, if the car really is
as clean as you say, and you can show me full records to prove the full
service records to back up your claims and mileage, I'll pay your asking
price. They then know I'm serious. I know I'm touching on the low end of a
W140, but to put it right, or the way I like them, could end up costing me
much more in the end, than just paying the higher price up front for a
really nice one.

As for the cars I'm looking at, I agree, the guy with the 560 would have to
come down, just too many questions without the kind of answers I like with
that car, but if the 300E is as good as he says, and the factory records are
there as he says they are, I'm willing to pay pretty close to his asking
price.

I believe Marshall explained that the fabric cover allowed the

Re: [MBZ] CHevy 305/350 WAS- High mileage badges

2008-02-11 Thread E M
I'd stay away from that sealant stuff, and just change the core. That
sealant stuff can plug holes, and everything else too. I always worry about
that kind of stuff being in all the coolant passageways. I changed a heater
core once that let go right at the joint where the hole connects. The
connection was plastic, so when it let go, it did so in a BIG way! I made
sure the replacement core was all metal. I wasn't far from home but still
managed to go through 30 litres of mineral water I had to pick up at a store
on the way back. So, 30 litres of water in less than 4 kms is a pretty good
leak. hee hee.

[MBZ] Today's (and Yesterday's) Fuel Stories

2008-02-11 Thread Rich Thomas
So this afternoon I was driving the TD through our little community and
came to a stop light behind a Prius (#3 at the light) that had a sticker
on it that said "Drive a Prius / No War Required" I could see in the
mirror that it was an old hippie driving it, wire-rim glasses, beard,
and long gray hair. So anyway I sat there thinking, maybe I should make
a sticker that says "Drive a Biodiesel Benz / No War Required (except
for that nasty business back in the 40s but that might not count)" but
figured I couldn't fit all that on a sticker, maybe just go with the
shorter part.. Or maybe "Drive a Biodiesel Benz / Drive Up Food Prices"
but I don't know about that one either.

So the light turns green and everyone goes, the Prius hits the brakes
and goes to turn right (no signal), but stops halfway through for some
incomprehensible reason, I about hit the thing, I honk the horn, but
pull around and miss it. The guy sticks his hand out the window and
gives me the finger and I could see a smirk on his face. I hollered at
him but he drove off.

So I then got to thinking, maybe a sticker that says "Drive a Prius / Be
a Smug, Inconsiderate, Discourteous A**hole" but I figure the market
might be rather small.

So a bit later I am behind a bigass F350 Duallie with a Houston
Biodiesel sticker on one side of the bumper, and a sticker on the other
that says "With a President Like Bush Who Needs Terrorists" There was
something a bit incongruous about all that, but I can't quite put my
finger on it.

This was in the Chronicle yesterday, has a piccie of a nice Benz. The
article (and blog entry -- click on the video link) beg some comment.

Yes, he bought and restored it. He and his Dad are both interested in old
British cars. His Dad has two Austin Healey 3000. One Healey is mint, and
the other is being restored. The restored 3000 has an auto tranny. :-( I
think Moss still vintage races an old 3000, and his navigator is a woman by

I believe Marshall explained that the fabric cover allowed the
line to fail "softly". That is, it would weep to let you know

Friend of mine has an old Frog eye, no belts, no
side, back or front protection, and forget about rollover protection.

Are you referring to the late 50's-early 60's Austin Healey Sprites? My dad
has always called them "Bug Eyes," but Frog Eye works too! I had a neighbor
with a '59, but I never got to ride in it since it was a non-runner. He
bought a Datsun B210 engine/tranny to put into it, but never installed it.

Re: [MBZ] CHevy 305/350 WAS- High mileage badges

2008-02-11 Thread Curt Raymond

Yeah they can say what they will about the American V8 but the 318 in my Dakota
has been rock solid.
211,000 miles and just as powerful and easy to start as ever. I had to do a
waterpump and an oil pressure sensor. A couple serpentine belts too, and a
radiator.
Right now it needs a heater core. I'm wondering if I can limp it for another
month or two and try some sealant. I've had VERY bad luck with sealant sticking
thermostats but this is a very small leak. Just enough to make it smell.

My 86 Suburban was like that too. At 183K miles the 350 Small block
motor was fine. I changed the valve seals at
about 115K miles and that helped a lot. It ran stronger and used less
fuel after the new seals were installed.
Apart from that, the motor only got accessory things like a starter and
an alternator and a recored radiator.
Nothing internal and I didn't run Mobil 1 either. I don't know much
about its early life as it had over 100K miles
when I got it in July 1991. It hauled that boat of a Suburban body
around without complaining and didn't even do
too bad on fuel by today's standards. It was the last year with a 4 BBL
carb instead of the throttle body injection
setup. The 700R4 transmission, on the other hand was not good. The
interior was not bad either. I had the bottom
part of the front bench seat repadded when the foam got too soft and I
felt like I was leaning toward the door. The
cloth on the seats was fine. I had the body fixed and painted once. It
came from Texas and being red over tan, was
a bit faded. By 2000 rust was starting on the door bottoms but the rest
of the body was still pretty good. I still
sort of miss it. I sold it to a fellow who planned to fix it up for the
long haul. I should check to see if he
still has it.

Do a rolling oil change if you want to, but.

A friend of mine used the same theory in his 1973 Olds Omega. He owned
the car since new and he'd always change the filter & top off the oil.

At about 60,000 miles, he started the engine in his driveway and it went
knock, knock, knock, knock, knock and then it stopped. The engine was
locked up.

He pulled the dipstick & it read full. I came over that weekend and we
started to pull the engine. I unscrewed the drain plug & nothing came
out! Went back to the dip stick & it read full!

We went ahead & pulled the engine. I pulled the pan & it was full of
hard sludge, with a small depression for the end of the dip stick &
another larger depression for the oil pump pickup.

I figured the engine had been running on about one quart of oil for a
long, long time.

2008-02-11 Thread Curt Raymond

When I first got my bike my FIL gave me a leather MA motorcycle patrolman's
jacket. Sadly its about 2" too short in the arms. Apparently I'm built a bit
like a gorilla.

Anyway I find my Joe Rocket (Comet I think) jacket to be plenty warm with the
liner in. The wind doesn't get through it. If I were planning to make long
rides in the cold I'd have a touring bike (like the '96 BMW beckoning me at the
shop) and a heated vest.

My Joe Rocket coat has big heavy leather pads in the elbows, shoulders and low
spine. Seems like good protection while still being surprisingly comfortable.

They make a perforated jacket for hot summer riding I've considered, they

Joe Rocket is good stuff - just remember to zip the two pieces
 together.

The best winter protection is a good leather bomber jacket, leather
 gloves,
chaps & boots but you have to look hard to find a good leather jacket.
 The
manufacturers have figured out how to make a jacket made from thin
 leather
feel very heavy.

Good denim does slide well but good denim is hard to find these days
 because
even the major brands have gone to lighter fabric. Also, denim does not
protect as well as leather. You can buy kevlar reinforced denim riding
 pants
and jackets but they are expensive.

Oh, when I went on my last slide, I had scrapes:
On my helmet
On the left shoulder, side & arm of my bomber jacket
On my left glove
On the left leg of my chaps
On the side of my left boot

It was a November crash. If it had been summer then I would have tested
 my
Joe Rocket gear.

I threw away the helmet because they are only good for one impact and I
still wear the rest.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

Re: [MBZ] MBTex/leather interiors on eBay - reputable?

2008-02-11 Thread David Bruckmann
Yes, that "more parts at better prices" link is not something that ANYONE
looking for parts would click on, especially when their other option is "online
catalogue". Tell Hursty to get on with it!

What caught my attention in the eBay shop (I wasn't even LOOKING for seat
covers, actually I was checking the going rate on a used hydraulic compensator,
of which there were none listed) was the relatively low price, as I have seen
other leather sets for upwards of $3500.

I've ordered stuff from Rusty before (even managed to talk him into sending
stuff to Canada!) and will happily do so again when the time comes.

I used to own a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice 9C1 Police Interceptor with the TBI
350. Car had almost 200,000 miles on the odometer when the water pump blew
and sprayed coolant *everywhere*, like a water balloon burst. Well,
overheated the engine and warped a head. Had a new pump put on and drove it
another month or two with it ticking before trading it off on a Korean
import.

Wish I hadn't done that. I miss that car. Get this, the dealer that took it
in from me gave me a good price for it, because they had some kind of buying
overseas that picked these huge ex-cop cars up and refurbished them for
wealthy people or something. At least that's the story I was given when I
asked what would happen to her.

*sighs*

I could drive that car, and I kid you not, with my left leg out the window
*on* the rearview mirror. Not completely intelligent mind you, but she was
*that* big. I also know the car could do 100mph with out batting an eyelash
and feel like she was still at 60. But we won't talk about that.

State Farm has always been our insurer of choice,
mainly because they are fair and easy to work with
(for us - YMMV.)

I have a 15 year old in the house, and SF has a
program that they take when they turn 16 that consists
of classroom time and logging their driving for a
month or two. If they pass the class successfully
they get an additional 10% off their rate.

And as a teenager, you NEED every break you can get
when it comes to auto insurance...

When I did my BRC for my endorsement, there was a
young guy in the class who had a Joe Rocket mesh
jacket with all the Kevlar pads. Since it was June
and already 90F+ by 7:00 AM, leather was damned
uncomfortable to be wearing. he let me try out his
jacket, and I was really impressed. Enough that I
bought one the next week and use it whenever the
temperature is about 80F or so. Makes the hot Florida
days a little more bearable on the bike, and still
affords good protection.

Denim is not ideal, as it will tear quite easily.
When I ride to work I wear leather chaps, not only for
protection, but to keep the road crap off my pants.

All my leather is H-D motorclothes, so it's HEAVY. My
main riding jacket weighs in at about 15 pounds with
the liner and winter stuff snapped on it.

Wear it all day and your shoulders feel sore.

Re: [MBZ] CHevy 305/350 WAS- High mileage badges

2008-02-11 Thread E M
Alex, I'm not up on the latest offering from GM, but I'm pretty sure much of
the old V8 still lives on in models available today. As with all engines,
things are refined over the years, giving better mileage and emissions.
Some of the current V8s give great fuel mileage given the performance. Fuel
delivery systems have been updated over the years, a lot of what made the V8
great is still there. I think Vortec engines, or the introduction of the
name was to help more easily identify the size of the engine in metric. Eg,
A Vortec 5700 is 5.7 litres, so it made doing the math by looking at the
engine name easy. I think the base corvette, (not chevette, hee hee) still
uses the pushrod engine. Not sure about the current gen of ZR1. Whatever
GM call it, I'd feel pretty confident buying a GM V8. Fuel economy may not
be that great, but you have to take into consideration what your bolting it
into and the weight you're asking it to pull. My old 350 with a mild cam
and small carb gave great torque and amazing fuel economy, but it might have
been a little thirstier had it been bolted into something like a 600SWB. hee
hee.

Again, I say, Free and Free, oh, and Google will also host your domain email
as Gmail @yourdomain.com
Free

It's a pretty sweet deal, and being a penny pinching cheap bast err ...
not banned, I highly recommend it.

PS. It's free.

Not to mention Rusty carries just about any Asian car
part, too. Being Mercedes-less right now, I rely on
him for Nissan and Mazda parts.

I plug him heavily to the neighbors, too.

1and1.

Have used them before they started marketing heavily
over here (I believe they're based in Germany) and
have always been pleased.
