Re: [MBZ] Whoa look at the price of fuel
Without delving too deeply, I can just say that I'm surprised how warm most people keep their homes and businesses. For cat's sake, turn down the thermostat and put on a sweater! I am so stiflingly hot and uncomfortable in many peoples' homes. We keep ours at 62 when I'm home alone and 64 when the wife is here. And another thing: I don't think people should take more than one shower a day. Heck I don't even take one a day. Isn't it shocking? I am willing to deal with the increase in body odor I'd have to endure from the general public. Heck, I'd rather smell that than bad breath, and It seems to me that the overwhelming majority of people have that problem. I think I have a very effective nose or something. It's a curse. You'd think diesel exhaust would kill some smell receptors, but I don't know. Well, I'm sure you're probably correct about this. On the other hand, I am almost constantly disappointed in the lack of professionalism displayed by the drivers of big rigs (and city and school buses for that matter). It often seems to be a matter of bullying. Yes, truckers have to stand up for their rights and not allow themselves to be inconvenienced by inconsiderate cars, but I often see pushy driving by truckers too. Often this takes the form of tailgating you in the left lane as you try to pass the car in the right lane. So you have to downshift - get over it - you have no right to tailgate. And when you're piloting multiple more tons than the passenger car, I believe your responsibility is pretty grave and you ought to act accordingly or find another line of work. I recall one day on the interstate when I was speeding (yes, believe it or not). And I went to go around a semi, and another semi proceeded to block my way without any reason. Then the two of them created a rolling roadblock for me. I can only assume they took me for the typical clueless driver screwing around and not respecting them. Had I better tires and more power (non-turbo SAAB) I would have nailed it and passed on the shoulder. I'd like to get my hands on these two idiots and see how tough they are on two feet. it looks like according to the ETM that brown/red is to pin 1 grey/red (2 wires) is to pin 2 middle? brown/violet is to pin 3 I think pin 2 is ground, then pin 1 & 3 left/right To confirm you can of course once the car is hot turn one side hot, other side cold and put punch the EC (economy) button and if you have the proper left/right connection the correct side will get hot since the duovalve is controlling hot water flow to left/right sides individually But likely the connector has very very tiny printing on it for the pin numbers On Feb 21, 2008, at 8:36 PM, Tarek Elshenawy wrote: > Does anyone know or can anyone verify on their vehicle the pin-out > of the > three socket connector on the monovalve (duovalve)? Re: [MBZ] New Grandfather
Good plan. Grandkids are great. In theory, you can spoil them for a few hours, feed them sugar stuff, then hand them back to your kid as "pay back" for past transgressions. I enjoy sending presents to mine. Fortunately, I have a wife who is much better at picking out "kid gifts" than me, even though she has no biological link to the grandkids. I thought a John Deere ball cap was the perfect 4th birthday gift to my "yuppie" oldest granddaughter. My wife took my suggestion and then sent something more appropriate -- puzzles and stuff like that. And no, I don't wear a John Deere ball cap. I don't do hats unless it is really cold, and then I look like a lost Brit in my snap-brim wool cap. (Harley embroidered, too.) Re: [MBZ] Whoa look at the price of fuel
So we have $.20/gallon in the 1930's and $.23 in the mid 1960's. I sure wish fuel prices had stayed on that track. In the mid 1970's I had a grey market Alfa GTV with dual Webbers. I was getting 45 mpg at 70 mph on the highway and I can't recall the in-town mileage. I lived on the NW side of Indianapolis and worked a couple of days a week on the East side. I was averaging $2.50 a week for fuel, though if you counted repair and maintenance costs that didn't matter as much as it should have. BillR -Original Message- From: "archer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: 2/21/08 12:19 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Whoa look at the price of fuel I remember my sister paying a dollar for five gallons of gas during the 1930s. This was for the first car in the family; a 1928 Oakland which had wooden spoke wheels, a cloth top, and a rumble seat. The "filling station" across the street had gravity flow pumps. The attendant would hand pump the amount of gas you wanted into a glass cylinder at the top of the pump which was marked off in gallons, and then it would drain by gravity through the hose and into your tank. Some stations would keep the cylinder full and dispense it between the gallon marks. One day we heard a loud boom and the house windows rattled. A fellow who was putting gas in the tank of a model T Ford at the station across the street was standing over the tank which was under the front seat. When he lit a cigarette the gas exploded and blew him out of the car. That was on Market Street in New Albany, Indiana. Re: [MBZ] OT Whoa look at the price of Al Gores fame
Don't know so much about profiting but me thinks it is more about being in the limelight. I think it is sort of like the rich having a fund raiser for the homeless by putting on a big do and then by the time they paid for all the works and jerks ending up with 200 bucks for the homeless. They all had a fine time and have that warm fuzzy feeling of having done something but end up having achieved nothing but publicity for themselves. Same with that Gore crap, preaching to the converted but the people who should have had a look didn't. I wonder if you did a survey of the top 100 business people, how many actually watched that 'doco'? And of those who did, how many are actually looking into ways of reducing their carbon emissions? Wonder how all those scientists feel that have been saying for years that there may be a problem but Gore sticks his nose in and walks away with a Noble price. If he was half decent he would have given that award to all the scientists on whose work he based his movie. Ahh sorry that's right, along with inventing the internet Al has also single handedly researched all about climate change and it's causes, affects and possible future implications. Re: [MBZ] Portland CL: Cheap 126 SD for someone
I was not kidding about Rustoleum. Wasn't there a thread on here a while back about painting a car in this manner? It can be done reasonably well if one is careful. I have not done a car, but I did do the tank on my air compressor and it looks pretty good. Nice and shiny and no runs or that sort of thing. Pretty bad orange peel if one looks closely but I gather that my error was in using the paint right out of the can. If one thins it somewhat, then it is possible to get a decent finish. I am not certain how long it will last but it can look reasonable - at least good enough for an old and inexpensive vehicle. Re: [MBZ] W108 electric window winder - failure mode?
This is the normal failure mode for that window lift. What happens is that the motor isn't aligned with the gear very well, and the motor gear is bronze and just wears off the teeth on the regulator. You must attach the motor very carefully, using thin shims under the mounting screws to get the gears lined up correctly, and then hope the aluminum casting doesn't warp in use, as is the normal case. Lousy design, no used in later models. [MBZ] W108 electric window winder - failure mode?
Gang, I was inspecting the driver's electric window mechanism on the 280SEL last night. The window is in the habit of slipping down. The motor works, but the glass falls. Opening up the door revealed that the large gear on the lifter is badly worn on one side and needs to be replaced. My question is about the wear pattern: it is one-sided, and it looks like the motor gear and regulator gear are not on the same plane, causing the regulator gear to rub against the support and wear on one side only. I can't see anything obvious that is broken or hanging loose. The casting looks bent where the regulator gear passes between it and the door inner skin, which is odd because I thought the casting was made of pot metal and would break, not bend. Is there some typical failure mode of the window motor/winder assembly that would cause the gear to rub against the support and thus wear unevenly? Apart from replacing the window regulator, is there something else I should be looking for (eg. I have not yet removed the motor to inspect its gear, but I assume that MB specified the motor gear to be harder steel than the regulator gear!). [MBZ] New Grandfather
Rumor is, I am now a Grandfather. It’s been a busy day - mostly keeping Joey, my son occupied while his wife went through the earlier stages of child birth! Karen, my Wife, was not able to fly in from Wisconsin. Anyways, his name is Joseph Alexander Hargrave & he weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces at birth & was born at 5:30 this evening. I’ve attached a few pictures. I’m sure I missed a lot of people so please pass this email along to whomever you see fit. Thanks, Tom Hargrave 256-656-1924 No virus found in this outgoing message. Re: [MBZ] Whoa look at the price of fuel
Time and money. Considering that the goods have to be shifted from factory to rail head and then at the other end from rail head to final destination. Easier and more likely cheaper to just have a truck take the goods from A to B. There are systems in place where the whole trailer is put onto rail and they just have to hook up a semi, perhaps a Mercedes semi (for a bit of MB content). Phillip wrote: "A truck can get a load from one coast to the other in 5-8 days. Every time, any destination. The railroad takes longer, and if it's not a major market at each end it is even longer." I agree with that, except it is a lot safer to have that cargo on the trains - at least safer for those cars on the interstate. I also agree that a lot of the safety problems associated with trucks are not the fault of the truckers, but rather the morons who don't know how to drive. BUT, just having more and more big trucks on the roads increases the chances of accidents. And accidents involving two cars are a lot less deadly to the other vehicles, than accidents involving 18 wheelers. Donald H. Even when MB and VW and BMW and GM were all selling lots of diesel cars, the quantity of diesel used by cars was a _lot_ less than big trucks. It still is. Lets figure a ordinary solo driver will log 2500 miles (4025 km) per week. A typical truck could achive 6.25 mi/gal (2.65 l/km) This results in 400 (1500 l) gallons per week. In my 240D, it would take me 6 months to use the same quantity of fuel the truck uses every week. Thus my usage and tax is just a "drop in the bucket". > Actually, I'd love it if there could be a separate highway > system for freight trucks. Re: [MBZ] Biggest tire on 300D. was: Low Profile Tires: Was 300TE
My experience would indicate that old tires crack badly enough that you will notice and change them. I had a set of Bridgestone Steel Belted Radials on my old Chevy pickup for close to 20 years. They were blems when I bought them in about 1985. They only got about 13000 miles on them in the 20 years that they were on the truck but by the end I didn't think it safe to keep going. There were cracks in the tread wide enough that I could see the steel belting. They were so out of round that the truck rode like a bucking bronco but they still held air and would also withstand a pretty good load in the box. I would occasionally go a couple of miles from home to get a yard of topsoil or of crushed rock. The tires never gave up. I put a set of Goodyear light truck radials on it for about $500 and doubled the value of the truck about 3 or 4 years ago and then parked it at the lake. It has not had plates on it for the past 2 years. Randy -Original Message- So I'm curious, what's everyones opinion on the max age of a tire, regardless of mileage before they toss it? If you want to ship your freight or semi full of freight to many places, you have the choice of only one railroad company and you have to pay their price. Nationalizing the railroads probably wouldn't work but nationalizing the tracks (just like the interstate system is "nationalized") might work. That way, you'd have numerous startups and established companies running to the same places, and the "market" (competition) would keep the prices within reason. I've seen articles outlining how this could be done using a traffic control system similar to air traffic control. I agree with you Ed. I really enjoy the trains...especially now that I live in a country where the actually HAVE trains to use. In October we went to Paris on the TGV. Talk about smooth! Like a baby's bum at 320 km/hr! Even changed tracks at that speed! Apparently the French have a prototype rail based train that can do 580 km/hr! Woohoo!! Meanwhile, back here in the boonies, I take the GO train and it rattles and hums at a whopping 100-110 km/hryawn...chunky, clunky and painfully slow... Hopefully when the price of fuel rises some more, people will realise that the short-sighted designs of our cities will make us pay! hahaha, I can't wait! It's also better to get off the train and be in the city centrenot 50 km away. And I don't mind lugging my luggage on and off instead of having to wait in the terminal for ages. Re: [MBZ] Whoa look at the price of fuel
I remember taking the train as a kid and young teen many times, over driving or flying. I find flying now, on those 4-5 hour flights are just a pain and wast of time. You spend more time in customs at either end, than you do in the air. There was a real romance about boarding a train. I often took the old Turbo between Toronto and Montreal, and if felt very much like boarding the Concorde of trains. The seating would rival any First Class airplane ticket at the time, and you would walk around, sit up in the 747 type engine where there was a bar. Snack bar was very cool, and the best part, they had a microwave!! They'd reheat a hotdog or hamburger, bun already on. Sure, it was all soggy, and so hot it melted the plastic to the bun, but it was amazing all the same. The cars were all joined, without the usual doors between each car, just one long articulated tube. It was fast, smooth, and very modern at the time. It had it's problems, and was pulled out of service, but it was pretty cool at the time. It's replacement was more conventional and reliable, but felt like a big step back. Much like we have given up the Concorde to ride double decker buses in the sky. Am I the only one bored with the offerings of the past 30 years? Oh, the good old days. OMG, did I just say that? Guess I'm now officially old. hee hee. Ed 300E ps. regular is $1.10 per litre here today. I find I get similar mileage if I drive slow or fast, so I opt for fast. ;-) On 21/02/2008, John Robbins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Jim Cathey wrote: > > They've got it. It's called the railroad. Lots of them are expanding and upgrading their tracks(double tracks and upgrading to higher speed corners in downtown ($$$) areas). The folks at Trains magazine are also commenting on the increase in business. Most of them say it is coming from the saturated highway system. They have many years of neglect to recover from though. I drive a 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88. I remember one time, I didn't know if I could make it home and only had 52 cents in the ashtray. I pulled into a station that offered a 4 cent discount on gas if bought paid cash. So, I put in 56 cents and brought my 52 cents to the register. Aren't drivers of large vehicles paying more fuel tax/mile? Be careful what you wish for or you might find yourself driving a A class and paying three times as much for fuel to fund the separate highway system for heavy vehicles. Re: [MBZ] Whoa look at the price of fuel
I don't know how much crude was at the time. Didn't follow that back then, and I only know nowadays because it's all over the news due to its all-time high price. Interesting about the tax added to diesel. So without it, diesel would have been even cheaper in relation to gas than it was? Clearly if this tax is still in place it needs to be looked at. Heck, you would have thought back in the 80s when Benz was cranking out diesel powered automobiles, a stink would have been raised over this tax. Well, maybe it wasn't raised because the price was not a problem and it was, after all, still cheaper than gas. I do agree with the concept that the more damage a vehicle does to the road, the more its operator should pay in road tax. But I haven't fully thought the issue through in terms of: Goods have to get shipped, and we all need/want them, so why penalize those in the business of shipping them? I do know that when I see a tractor trailer on the road around my house, I sorta cringe at the wear they are putting on the road. Truth told, I think that in this age of crisis in terms of oil and environment and road congestion, (yes the last one IS a crisis!), folks who opt to drive vehicles that are considerably larger than they need ought to be made to contribute more somehow. I guess if your vehicle registration or tax is weight-based, that's something, but I don't suspect it's enough. So I say let's repeal the tax on diesel fuel. And let's levy a tax on, at least, those who drive full sized pickup trucks and SUVs and cannot prove they have an actual need to do so. I know this would add a layer of bureaucracy, but I'd still be for it. As for penalizing trucking companies, I don't know - maybe just if they drive through town? Actually, I'd love it if there could be a separate highway system for freight trucks.
