Can only find used or rebuilt units. Both still have the same inherent
problems, and will eventually fail.

Does Rusty still sell them rebuilt and for how much.

I think so, and it is *expensive*!! Think four digits.

What's the chance of finding a good used one on Ebay or elsewhere?

Possible but not likely. And if you do find a good one, it will be
really close to the price of the aftermarket electronic replacement

This is really the only solution unless you want to roll your own... it
is pricey, but maintains full functionality of the original system. Maybe
not something you want to spend on a free car, but there it is...

2009-02-20 Thread Curt Raymond
Will do on the repair piece, I didn't know they existed...

While I suspect it would work in the bed to weld with a torch (or braze) you're
not suppsoed to because apparently the sheet metal has been heat treated. I
don't remember the exact problem but I was given to understand there'd be a
problem.
From the looks of things my biggest problem is going to be that the bed
appears to have been galvanized. Its okay I just won't breathe while I'm
welding... ;) (Its a joke kid...)

Get yourself a square foot of ribbed bed repair metal.
Fits better (making the welding easier) and looks better.

Some friends of mine refloored a Bronco with sheet metal scraps, hammers,
ox-acetylene, and brazing rod. If the truck had any computers, they would have
been safe.

Yuck...

A. Big hole. With a hole saw (rather than careful cutting) I suspect I'd have
to come out with a 3 diameter hole at least, maybe 4.

B. I'd have to have a slippery static creating bedliner...

My plan, once the repair is complete is to have the thing Rhinolined. I did
Herculiner on my Dakota which I was reasonably happy with. Its nice to be able
to throw something in the back and have have it mostly stay put. Of course when
hauling a snowmobile it is slightly more difficult to get the thing out...
Everything comes with a cost.

Use a hole saw to make a nice neat drain hole where the bad spot is. Paint the
edges to avoid further rust. Install
a nice plastic bed liner over the top.

I guess I didn't catch the fact that Curt doesn't already have a liner. I just

Both of our F150's have the Ford bedliner in them and although it is plastic, I
don't find it all that slippery.
They have worked fine for us. I did pull the one in the 98 and have a look
under it once but have not done so with
the 02. The bed under the liner in the 98 looked fine.

I don't know as though I would have gone out looking for one if the trucks

but I am happy enough to leave them in there.

[MBZ] Viton tubing for injector return lines

2009-02-20 Thread harry watkins
I had a failure on one of these lines and thought I would share the details.
The day after they were installed on my 85 TD, I had to replace the valve cover
gasket. I removed one end of one line and slid it back on after repairs was
made. It started leaking immediately. It came off and on without requiring
abuse.

This was only a one time event so is not a good test, however, its not for me
anymore unless I have the wrong stuff. Anyone know? Bought new to me in
November.

1/16 wall. You got the right size, but it's possible the barbs cut up the inside

Re: [MBZ] Cool Cockpits

Yes, I understand that. They're referring to an early H model. Cockpit
equipment/controls shown in those designated early actually went into use
'bout '77 in the H's, which were built in '61 - '62. Having many hours in
H's with the early/original/'61-62 layout AND the equipment that went into
use in 'bout '77 (EVS/FLIR, etc.), I can easily recognize the difference.
I'd call an early H cockpit one with their original setup from '61-62'
through 'bout '66/'67, when terrain avoidance systems were added. The next
significant change was in 'bout '77 with addition of EVS/FLIR, low light
level TV, forward-looking infrared and some other much more sophisticated
equipment. Other very significant changes to H equipment occurred in 'bout
late '80's, when all new bombing/navigation systems were installed. A
program is underway now, to replace even that late '80's equipment.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Welding on the Ranger

2009-02-20 Thread Curt Raymond
Since the hole in the bed is almost perfectly round I think the rust started
from a rock hitting the bed underneith and chipping the paint, it then rusted
through from underneith.
Its a hard spot to see from underneith because its just in front and above the
spare tire. So no I didn't lie on the ground and look up...

My plan right now is to pull the bed, the more I think about it the more I
think theres probably a disconnect for the taillight wiring at the left side
taillight. I pull that, pull the 4 bolts and get 3 beefy friends to help me
lift the bed off onto some beefy sawhorse type deals. Then I can weld above and
from underneith and can more easily make sure I do a good paint job underneith
to stop this from happening again.

Not all bedliners are slippery.  I had one in my F150 that was very
grippy.  I can't recall the name of it, but if you're interested I
can find out.  It was an actual liner, not a spray-on or coating.

I've only seen sprays (sticky) poly inserts (slick) and rubber floormats
(sticky).

I guess I didn't catch the fact that Curt doesn't already have a liner. I just
assumed that he bought a rusty truck because he was too lazy to look under the
liner. Now I'm thinking he bought a rusty truck because he was too lazy to look
under the snow in the bed.

The stuff that Rusty sells is listed as 3.2x1.9mm, or 1/8 ID x a bit more
than 1/16 wall. You got the right size, but it's possible the barbs cut up

[MBZ] Stinky car

2009-02-20 Thread Fmiser
I have had an odd experience this last week.

I take my '82 240D the car on a 250 mile trip.

10 miles into it I notice a terrible stink! Sort of like fried
eggs that sat in the sun and spoiled. Toward the end of the of
the trip I notice my two-way radios have an alternator whine
in the receive audio.

The stink had now gotten so bad that when I fueled, just
standing down-wind of the car was unpleasant. I tried to
figure out where the smell was coming from. It sort of seemed
to be coming out the heater vents, but not really. It also
seemed to be worse sitting still than on the highway.

I had no clues - so I ignored it! *grin*

My wife took the car a couple days later. If anything, the
stink was worse. When she got home, I park the car outside
with the doors open to air it out. I decided to spray lysol
into the heater air intake to maybe do something about the
smell.

I ended up replacing the starboard wiper blade pivot. No, that
had nothing to do with the stick! But to get to the intake, I
pulled off the wiper box cover. While doing that I discovered
the drain for that pivot had clogged and the pivot housing was
in _really_ bad shape. 10 minutes later I had a one pulled
from my private parts yard. I spray a bunch of Lysol in the
intake, ran the fan, and put it all back together again.

Still no conclusive data on the source of the smell.

A couple days later later the car won't start. No, it's not
from having the doors open while airing it out. Good guess
though - I turned off the dome lights. The block heater was
plugged in and it wasn't very cold. A jump start got it
going. Turned it off once in the middle of the 60 mile trip
and it cranked slow when it started - but it did start. Didn't
turn it off for the other stops. *smile*

Well, a stink I'll ignore, but not starting is a bit more
serious. And I have toy - er, _tool_ to help track down the
problem. There has been a bit of no start history with this
car.

About 2 month ago I had a bad solenoid on the starter on this
240D. Since then it's been starting fine. Then about 2 weeks
ago it didn't start. Maybe I left the trunk open too long, or
something like that. Most annoying was the fact I was 700
miles away and it wasn't me that had to use the old truck to
jumpstart.

The interior light turned on, the glow relay click, but that's
about all it would do. Less than 5 minutes on the jumper
cables (4 AWG) and it started fine.

Fast forward. First step in a no start is to check battery
voltage. 4.9!!! No wonder it didn't start! Hook up the charger
to the 4 year old battery. About an hour later I disconnect
the changer, let it rest for a couple minutes and check the
voltage again. 5.2 Volts.

About then I notice a bubbling sound from the battery. I start
to get a glimmer...

I lean over to make sure that's where the sound is coming
from.

I happen to breath in. (I do that rather often...)

The stinky smell It's the battery!!

I open the vent caps to see the water level. It's so low on
_every_ cell I can't see _any_ liquid.

So did the battery just die, or did the voltage regulator kill
it?

With a jump, I started the car and measured 17 V at idle. I
_seriously_ overcharged battery, boiled to death!!

About 8 months ago the brushes wore out and I replaced the
brush/regulator assembly. Oh well. I removed the screws and
found that one ear had broken off, the other was cracked. So
the problem was a mechanical failure.

I have a new-in-the box regulator/brush unit on the shelf, so
stuck it in. I noticed that it didn't seat all the way in when
the screw holes lined up.

It's a 240, so there's a lot of room under the hood compared
to a 300 turbo - but still not enough to see, so I remove the
alternator. With it sitting on the work bench with bright
overhead lights I could see the hole in the alternator housing
wasn't big enough for the protrusions on the bottom of the
brush unit. In other words, it didn't fit! I wanted a second
opinion. I got that from one of the parts cars. Same
thing. And both of these were shaped the same as the
now-broken one.

What to do? What I did was took the parts car part and a file
and grind wheel and made it fit.

And I bought a new battery...

So the moral of the story is, check your windshield wiper
drain to make sure it's not plugged.

Actually, I'm guessing the alternator must have come from an
older car and the regulators are _almost_ interchangeable.

2009-02-20 Thread Jim Cathey

10 miles into it I notice a terrible stink! Sort of like fried
eggs that sat in the sun and spoiled. Toward the end of the of
the trip I notice my two-way radios have an alternator whine
in the receive audio.

And right about here I'm saying to myself Voltage regulator!
Lots of sulfur in a car battery. Needs to stay there!

Yeah, next time I will too!

In all the years with all the cars and all the batteries, I've
never cooked one enough to make it smell!

But now I know! *grin*

[MBZ] Blower control unit

2009-02-20 Thread Archer
Does anyone know how to get the blower speed control unit and the temperature
control unit out of an '83 300D Turbo without taking out the dash cover? It
looks like both are mounted on a piece of metal that is not fastened at the
back. I see one screw where a strip is fastened to the firewall. These are
above the glove box and accessible with the glove box removed.

I unplugged the blower, put 12v on it and it runs fine, but the cable that goes
to it shows a dead short.
The pushbutton control unit board is fried and out of the car; the thin coils
in the resistor unit under the hood for the blower control shows overheating.
I have the electrical manual for that car, and best I can figure out the short
must be either in the blower control unit or the resistor bank under the hood.
I already have a replacement pushbutton unit and have a source for whatever
other parts, so I'll probably wind up replacing all the climate control units,
but I need to get the blower unit; and possibly the temperature unit out; in
order to identify the cable numbers and check the cables for shorts.
Thanks,
Gerry

I believe they just unplug from their socket. They're very
replaceable, anyway. No need to take out the dash or anything
like that. The power resistors do get hot. Not blued metal
case hot, though.

Unplug all wiring and check for continuity again. This will make sure
it's not a wiring issue.
