One does not need the special tool assembly cage or assembly sleeve
that

is called for in the service manual. Also, removing the camshaft gear is
also not necessary (at least on my engine - haven't checked the chain
stretch yet so maybe I have a really looong chain helping out here).

I was out in the garage working on my '87 replacing the belt tensioner,
when
that project came to a sudden halt due to a tool shortage (don't own a
12mm

hex key). Decided to mess around with the '95 as I'd gotten some marking
paint and I thought it was a good time to remove the camshaft gear.
Pulled

the valve cover and marked the gear and chain position, then while waiting
for that to dry I started pulling on the timing chain at the IP timer to
see

how necessary the special tool was. To my surprise, after just a few
minutes of fiddling the IP timer came right out. Installed the new one,
and

then re-installed the injection pump. Still need to hook up all the
injection pump connections, but she's back in place.

So, spent a few satisfying hours in the garage, and now I have a good
excuse

to go tool shopping tomorrow.

Re: [MBZ] MB prices, then and now

2010-01-02 Thread LarryT

Hi Don -
As you noted, quality may have suffered, but there are many more things
at work here that dictate inflation of 1 specific model. In addition to the
reduced quality you mentioned are things like: improved electronics which
also cost* much less do more, increases in productivity when building the
cars through the use of robots, reduced overheads, changes in the materials
used in the cars, building cars in non-union areas (the ML in Al.) - all of
these and more go into the price escalation.

While your calculation of the increased price was correct it's not
accurate when looking at one particular product. Also, the E350 may seem to
a grandson of the E300, there's been a lot of changes made to it - perhaps
enough to consider the E350 no longer related to the E300. New bodies, new
engines, new controls, new materials of construction, etc may make it no
longer a straightforward comparison.

But I'm glad to hear the price of the '91 E300 - it gives me a pretty
good idea what my 91 300D cost - I'd guess at around $51k or $52K.

* = consider the cost hard drives and memory - and last I heard there were
over 2 dozen computers on a new MB!. Memory costs have been driven down so
far that some companies have been pushed near bankruptcy. In the last ~20
years we've gone from having 10MB or 20MB hard drives to 500GB - 2TB hard
drives for similar prices - or cheaper. (that's the technology increase I
experienced in the corporate world at least) More ability in less space.

Take Care -

was $47,550 in Dec. of 1990. I just priced an E350, same color, leater

inflation

factor.
I found the NASA inflation calculator -
http://cost.jsc.nasa.gov/inflation/nasa/inflateNASA.html - and adjusted
the

1991 price to today = $75,842.
Todays price of $51,065 adjusts down to $33,017 in 1991.
More technology for less money -- makes you wonder about the quality,

My wife runs OSX10.5 on her Dell Mini 10v (oh, I mean, er... I do own
retail, and have thought about getting a sticker of an apple...). She
uses it for mail/youtube/browsing, and hasn't had any complaints
except that it takes a while for Word to start. 10 16:9 screen, and
she has a real monitor she can plug in if she needs something bigger,
but I've never seen her use it. The Dell usually sits on her lap,
which is a good distance for the screen size. SD stuff (which is all
we use anyway) is fine, but we can't do NF on OSX.

DVD would be external USB, but she's never asked me for it (it's
downstairs with my computers). Dell was purchased from the refurb
store in early August and is still running fine. Does have the
extended battery and has made dozens if not hundreds of trips to/from
school in her handbag.

(As an aside, the same wife from comp.sys.laptops:
http://www.techreplies.com/laptops-notebooks-17/long-lived-lap-top-76657/
; after this we went through two ToughBooks in less than a year, and
eventually got her on a desktop for a couple years. :)

If I were in your shoes, I'd look hard at the netbooks with SSD drives
and with an SD slot. Then you could set up the SD slot to boot first,
install a backup (maybe even read-only) image on the SSD, and MIL
could mail the 16GB SD back and forth. That way she wouldn't be out
of the computer during shipping.

I would also recommend Thinkpads or the Dell Latitude D6* or D8*s if
you have to go the laptop route, but they do consume lots more power
than the netbooks (advantage of the Atom).

Best,

Anyone of you with a netbook play video on it? I find the screen too small

they are designed for, so I shouldn't complain.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Do GFCI receptacles go bad?

2010-01-02 Thread dave walton
Last time I saw an intermittent problem like that was at my sister's
house in rural Ohio. A mouse had made a nest in the wall and chewed
the insulation off some romex. The GFCI kept the mouse from being
electrocuted unfortunately. The thing tripped occasionally over the
span of several weeks. I can't take credit for diagnosing that one.
They called in a real electrician who narrowed down the line causing
the problem, then he tore into the drywall and found the nest. I guess
that's not uncommon out in the boonies.

-Dave Walton

On Fri, Jan 1, 2010 at 4:39 PM, Max Dillon meadedil...@bellsouth.net wrote:
Well, the GFCI receptacle probably wasn't bad, which may mean I've got a
wiring problem.  Does anyone know what kind of resistance I should be
finding between Line and Neutral (black wire and white wire)?  I had
expected that a typical isolated circuit would have infinite resistance
between Line and Neutral, but I measured values between 500K Ohms and 9M
Ohms (my Fluke meter can read up to 40M Ohms).

I bought and installed a new GFCI receptacle, original problem remained, so
I started trouble shooting by isolating the circuits.  Thought I'd narrowed
it down to an exterior security light so I disconnected that, and the
problem seemed to be fixed.  An hour or two later, click the GFCI tripped
and wouldn't reset.  I unplugged all things that were plugged into the
downstream receptacles, but the problem remained.  This morning, the darn
thing reset and stayed reset.  Six-plus hours later and it is still reset.
Unless there is a receptacle somewhere or some device wired in that I don't
know about, all that remains now is wiring, downstream receptacles, and one
wall switch for the outdoor security light.

Obviously my T/S skills for house wiring aren't up to the task right now.  I
tested by measuring resistance between the line and the neutral wires, and
from each of those to the ground wire.  I isolated each line and neutral
wire pair between receptacles prior to measurements, and I found high
resistance but not infinite.  By high resistance I mean over 500K ohms.  One
the branch circuit going to the upstairs bathroom receptacles, resistance
was higher at over 9M Ohms. The other branch circuit (outside receptacle,
outside fan (removed), outside security light (removed)) had resistance from
Line to Neutral in the 500k Ohm range.

One thing I did not do was disconnect all the ground wire connections at
each box, because they're installed with crimped-on copper rings and I don't
have the tool and rings to replace them and don't think that wire nuts would
be in accordance with code.  After thinking about this a bit, I'm wondering
if leaving all the ground connections together was a mistake (as far as
 troubleshooting).

I do have an ammeter, but hesitate to use it for working on live circuits.
I almost made a mistake which could have been fatal yesterday when I failed
to open the breaker before working on an open receptacle box.  I touched the
receptacle, heard that little voice telling me something was wrong, let go
and picked up the tester.   I realized I'd forgotten the breaker before I
even tested the circuit and found power.  Scared me good, which is much
better than the alternative.  After that I'd leave a nightlight plugged into
the receptacle so if I saw the light on, I'd have the little voice and a
bright light to keep my fingers away.

I think I've got a bad one.  Several weeks ago I had my house power-washed,
and the fan in the screened-in back porch got wet and shorted out and
tripped the GFCI receptacle.  Once I'd figured out the problem and removed
the fan, leaving the wires capped with wire nuts and tucked safely into the
box, the GFCI would stay reset.  Days later it tripped again, but stayed
reset after I pushed the button.  We were gone from the house for about 10
days, and it had tripped again while we were gone and won't stay reset.  Now
I double checked the fan box to make sure the wires weren't shorting
anywhere, but the GFCI still won't stay reset.  If I reset it several times
in a row, it will eventually stay reset for an hour or two.

So, do these things age and go bad?  This one is probably about 15 years
 old.

Larry,
The sticker for my 1990 300D 2.5 t says $39,9xx. I bought it used but was
surprised at the sticker price-esp. when I ran the same kind of inflation
analysis that OK Don did.. I think all the factors you identify might be
contributors in part-but I personally think you have to look at Chrysler's
influence too. Moving the brand from up market to mid market-at least the E
class-and probably the C class too. And letting marketing not engineering
make decisions. May be just a bias on my part, but you could partially test
this hypothesis by checking other German luxury brand prices over the same
period of time. Snook?

Hi Don -
As you noted, quality may have suffered, but there are many more things
at work here that dictate inflation of 1 specific model.

I found the NASA inflation calculator -

a 102 with 2 more cylinders. QED. Dunno about 104.

So technically when you compare the 2 (1997cc) liter 102 and 3 (2960cc)

A cheap anything is a cheap anything...
I carried a Dell Inspiron 8500 (I think it was an 8500 anyway) for 3 years. It
went back and forth across the country and Atlantic Canada a few dozen times
and never failed me except the time I broke a key trying to get some dirt out
from under it. Dell replaced the keyboard under warranty.
Then I got a new job and an HP nw8000 which served me well for 2 years (it was
used when I got it) when I got my Dell Precision M90 that I've had for almost a
year now, both were pretty much flawless but the HP has the equivalent (I've
still got it on spares duty) of a million miles and makes some scary noises
which is why I pushed to replace it.

All three computers probably ran somewhere between $2500 and $3500 when they
were new, these are high end workstation laptops, the M90 is faster than the
dual processor 2.8ghz HP workstation I'm using right now.

A $20 computer running an OS thats too new for it (like XP if it was built for
2000) will be slow and 1GB of RAM isn't enough anymore unless you're using a
stripped down OS.

Maybe everyone else has had better luck with Dell than me.  I have 2 Dells
(my son bought one from a  friend for $20) and both are the slowest 'puters
I've ever seen.  I have a gig of RAM in both and the HDs are almost empty
except for the basics.

I've had excellent service from an Acer Laptop BTW - I use my laptops a LOT
and generally they start having warranty problems after 6-9 months.  Small
pieces breaking, monitor problems, usb ports stop working, CD drives die, -
that kind of stuff, but not the Acer -- it worked full time for 3 years
before the motherboard died.

Because of the problems I generally buy the extended warranty (but never on
other purchases) - and they always pay for themselves.

I like the idea of a Netbook but the added cost to get a full featured
Laptop is worth it to get all the extras - like CD drive, serial/parallel
port, several USB drives, etc.   BTW,  Costco has Netbooks for around $300.

Good luck Happy New Year!

Re: [MBZ] My '95 E300 project, progress report

2010-01-02 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin

Speaking of E300's, I really need to get my 95 on the road. Geez I am slow.

On this repairing the wiring with liquid electrical tape, tell me more
about this. My SD needs a new wiring harness, all the insulation is
falling off. This liquid tape idea sounds interesting.

Max Dillon wrote:

One does not need the special tool assembly cage or assembly sleeve that
is called for in the service manual. Also, removing the camshaft gear is
also not necessary (at least on my engine - haven't checked the chain
stretch yet so maybe I have a really looong chain helping out here).

I was out in the garage working on my '87 replacing the belt tensioner, when
that project came to a sudden halt due to a tool shortage (don't own a 12mm
hex key). Decided to mess around with the '95 as I'd gotten some marking
paint and I thought it was a good time to remove the camshaft gear. Pulled
the valve cover and marked the gear and chain position, then while waiting
for that to dry I started pulling on the timing chain at the IP timer to see
how necessary the special tool was. To my surprise, after just a few
minutes of fiddling the IP timer came right out. Installed the new one, and
then re-installed the injection pump. Still need to hook up all the
injection pump connections, but she's back in place.

So, spent a few satisfying hours in the garage, and now I have a good excuse
to go tool shopping tomorrow.

Remaining work on the '95:

Hook up all the injection pump connections

Repair deteriorating wire insulation in the engine bay (liquid electrical
tape)

Remove old fuel return line bits from injector nipples, install new lines

Diagnose/repair the engine missing and low power (new fuel filters first,
then maybe injectors or delivery valves are the culprits).

Re-install all the intake and crank-case ventilation piping/gaskets

Re: [MBZ] MB prices, then and now

2010-01-02 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
I have to disagree guys (as one of those engineers that work on new
mercedes). You're forgetting some very important influence on price:
competition, and what the market wants. A base priced E class at $75,000
won't find too many buyers when the competition can offer a similar car for
$45,000. Sure, you say, but for $75,000 they can make a much higher quality
car. Perhaps, but the number people willing to buy such a car is very
small. I'm afraid that Daimler won't be happy to change their complete
product strategy to satisfy a small group of enthusiasts can't afford their
new cars anyway!

Chrysler didn't influence anything... don't forget who bought who. That was
a one-way street of technology flow.

And you might want to take a closer look at Mercedes newest cars, then
compare them to Lexus, Audi, Porsche, etc. When you focus on the details,

you're buying brand-name oil or coolant or something like that it really

You'll notice they tend to be located in the same areas as Wal Mart, Big

surprised at the sticker price-esp. when I ran the same kind of inflation

contributors in part-but I personally think you have to look at Chrysler's

Hi Don -
As you noted, quality may have suffered, but there are many more things
at work here that dictate inflation of 1 specific model. In addition to
the

reduced quality you mentioned are things like: improved electronics which
also cost* much less do more, increases in productivity when building
the

cars through the use of robots, reduced overheads, changes in the
materials
used in the cars, building cars in non-union areas (the ML in Al.) - all
of

these and more go into the price escalation.

While your calculation of the increased price was correct it's not
accurate when looking at one particular product. Also, the E350 may seem
to

a grandson of the E300, there's been a lot of changes made to it - perhaps
enough to consider the E350 no longer related to the E300. New bodies,
new

engines, new controls, new materials of construction, etc may make it no
longer a straightforward comparison.

But I'm glad to hear the price of the '91 E300 - it gives me a pretty
good idea what my 91 300D cost - I'd guess at around $51k or $52K.

* = consider the cost hard drives and memory - and last I heard there were
over 2 dozen computers on a new MB!. Memory costs have been driven down
so

far that some companies have been pushed near bankruptcy. In the last ~20
years we've gone from having 10MB or 20MB hard drives to 500GB - 2TB hard
drives for similar prices - or cheaper. (that's the technology increase I
experienced in the corporate world at least) More ability in less space.

Take Care -

Looking
through the books, I found the original window sticker. This 124 has
leaster
seats, memory doors, adjustable stearing column, and head light wipers.
It

was $47,550 in Dec. of 1990. I just priced an E350, same color, leater
seats, no other options at $51,065. Doesn't seem like enough of an
inflation
factor.
I found the NASA inflation calculator -
http://cost.jsc.nasa.gov/inflation/nasa/inflateNASA.html - and adjusted
the
1991 price to today = $75,842.
Todays price of $51,065 adjusts down to $33,017 in 1991.
More technology for less money -- makes you wonder about the quality,

Mark,

Thanks for that input, as this problem may be contributing to the low power
condition which seems to include lack of combustion in several cylinders.
According to the CarFax in the maintenance part of the report, a wiring
harness was replaced, and there I went assuming that meant the engine wiring
harness - maybe it was replaced with NOS which has now also deteriorated? I
think more likely the CarFax report is wrong. In several places I see
degraded wire isulation. I just may have to replace the whole thing... :(

Have you considered replacing the biodegradable wiring harness instead of

problems. In my car's case, three cylinders quit firing.

I get it at the local Lowes, comes in a small can with applicator brush

stays where you put it. Dries fairly quick. I don't know how well it will

On this repairing the wiring with liquid electrical tape, tell me more

[MBZ] 12mm hex for OM603 tensioner -- was My '95 E300 project, progress report

I needed a 12mm hex key to remove the tensioner on my '87 wagon. My
neighbor was home this afternoon and he loaned me his, but I would like to
purchase one for my tool box. Today I visited almost every store that sells
tools in my town, and came up completely empty. My back-up plan was to
grind down a 1/2 inch hex to make a 12mm, but that wouldn't have been too
pretty I'll bet.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Do GFCI receptacles go bad?

2010-01-02 Thread Max Dillon
Dave,

I'm convinced that water was somewhere that the GFCI didn't like, due to the
power washing. I'm going on 36 hours without a trip event now, but this is
a new GFCI receptacle. I'm tempted to put the old back in and see what it
does.

I bought and installed a new GFCI receptacle, original problem remained,
so
I started trouble shooting by isolating the circuits.  Thought I'd
narrowed
it down to an exterior security light so I disconnected that, and the
problem seemed to be fixed.  An hour or two later, click the GFCI
tripped
and wouldn't reset.  I unplugged all things that were plugged into the
downstream receptacles, but the problem remained.  This morning, the darn
thing reset and stayed reset.  Six-plus hours later and it is still reset.
Unless there is a receptacle somewhere or some device wired in that I
don't
know about, all that remains now is wiring, downstream receptacles, and
one
wall switch for the outdoor security light.

The other branch circuit (outside receptacle,
outside fan (removed), outside security light (removed)) had resistance
from
Line to Neutral in the 500k Ohm range.

One thing I did not do was disconnect all the ground wire connections at
each box, because they're installed with crimped-on copper rings and I
don't
have the tool and rings to replace them and don't think that wire nuts
would
be in accordance with code.  After thinking about this a bit, I'm
wondering
if leaving all the ground connections together was a mistake (as far as
 troubleshooting).

I do have an ammeter, but hesitate to use it for working on live circuits.
I almost made a mistake which could have been fatal yesterday when I
failed
to open the breaker before working on an open receptacle box.  I touched
the
receptacle, heard that little voice telling me something was wrong, let go
and picked up the tester.   I realized I'd forgotten the breaker before I
even tested the circuit and found power.  Scared me good, which is much
better than the alternative.  After that I'd leave a nightlight plugged
into
the receptacle so if I saw the light on, I'd have the little voice and a
bright light to keep my fingers away.

I think I've got a bad one.  Several weeks ago I had my house
power-washed,
and the fan in the screened-in back porch got wet and shorted out and
tripped the GFCI receptacle.  Once I'd figured out the problem and removed
the fan, leaving the wires capped with wire nuts and tucked safely into
the
box, the GFCI would stay reset.
If I reset it several
times
in a row, it will eventually stay reset for an hour or two.

So, do these things age and go bad?  This one is probably about 15 years
 old.

Yes-that's like country Disneyland-in the summer there are water taxis to
downtown. Gaylord owns a lot of the attractions downtown too--do try to get
downtown if you can.  Also if you can go to a show  downtown at the old
original Ryman auditorium..

There is a neat Bass outdoor shop in the shopryland mall right there-the
Opryland hotel is really neat-gondolas, etc. might still have their

The McParts stores parts, in my experience, are bottom of the line.  If
you're buying brand-name oil or coolant or something like that it really
doesn't matter, but for things like belts, alternators, water pumps,

You'll notice they tend to be located in the same areas as Wal Mart, Big

FIB was a term in use by the '80's in the Wisconsin area that I grew up, and
I think it existed after the first summer which combined car traffic from
Illinois and Wisconsin road construction.

A fellow from the Lincoln state asked me why all the trees in Illinois
pointed toward Wisconsin. I took the bait, and the punch line was Because
WI sucks. My reply: No, Illinois b***s. We had a great time giving
each other hell after that.

Now I'm a Yankee living in the south. Folk here are too polite to tell me

As you can see MB altered the capacity of thoses motors during their
life cycle.
Most people will agree that a 617 is a 616 with an extra cylinder but
you may argue that because the cc/cylinder does not add up exactly they
are not the same, except for an extra cylinder.
Far as I know the 104 is a 103 block with a DOHC head, so I would not
say they are the same.

Re: [MBZ] bags

Does optional vs standard make a difference? Rear side bags are an
 option on the 2010 E 350

About $700 (a guess) is the difference. My W203 2001 C320 had four door
bags and curtain bags as standard. TeleAid was also standard.

For the W204 rear bags became an option as did TeleAid. I skipped both. The
side bags are now in the side of the front seat and fire forward. In some
markets the driver gets a knee bag but not here.

I would think the W212 arrangement would be the same. Crash tests (barrier
and side impact) are on YouTube.

Diagnose/repair the engine missing and low power (new fuel filters

Dave,

I'm convinced that water was somewhere that the GFCI didn't like, due to the

a new GFCI receptacle. I'm tempted to put the old back in and see what it
does.

The other branch circuit (outside receptacle,
outside fan (removed), outside security light (removed)) had resistance
from
Line to Neutral in the 500k Ohm range.

Several weeks ago I had my house

the fan, leaving the wires capped with wire nuts and tucked safely into

I'll agree with the thinkpad comment, but I'll caveat it by saying to
go with (I think) a T4x or newer; all T30's and many of the T2x's were

Btw, if you do not mind the weight, the T6x's have a magnesium basket

A cheap anything is a cheap anything...
I carried a Dell Inspiron 8500 (I think it was an 8500 anyway) for 3
years. It went back and forth across the country and Atlantic Canada a few
dozen times and never failed me except the time I broke a key trying to
get some dirt out from under it. Dell replaced the keyboard under
warranty.
Then I got a new job and an HP nw8000 which served me well for 2 years (it
was used when I got it) when I got my Dell Precision M90 that I've had for
almost a year now, both were pretty much flawless but the HP has the
equivalent (I've still got it on spares duty) of a million miles and makes
some scary noises which is why I pushed to replace it.

All three computers probably ran somewhere between $2500 and $3500 when
they were new, these are high end workstation laptops, the M90 is faster
than the dual processor 2.8ghz HP workstation I'm using right now.

A $20 computer running an OS thats too new for it (like XP if it was built
for 2000) will be slow and 1GB of RAM isn't enough anymore unless you're
using a stripped down OS.

Maybe everyone else has had better luck with Dell than me. I have 2 Dells
(my son bought one from a friend for $20) and both are the slowest
'puters

I've ever seen. I have a gig of RAM in both and the HDs are almost empty
except for the basics.

I've had excellent service from an Acer Laptop BTW - I use my laptops a
LOT

and generally they start having warranty problems after 6-9 months. Small
pieces breaking, monitor problems, usb ports stop working, CD drives
die, -

that kind of stuff, but not the Acer -- it worked full time for 3 years
before the motherboard died.

Because of the problems I generally buy the extended warranty (but never
on

other purchases) - and they always pay for themselves.

I like the idea of a Netbook but the added cost to get a full featured
Laptop is worth it to get all the extras - like CD drive, serial/parallel
port, several USB drives, etc. BTW, Costco has Netbooks for around
$300.

Good luck Happy New Year!
