2-3 ohms.

You can't fry it with only 12V if it's not shorted

current-limited.

Thanks, Jim (and Max too!). That was just what I needed to know.
Figured out the motor is fine, and both the door and console switches
work fine when swapped into other positions. At this point I guess
it's down to a break in the wires or a short somewhere. Chances are
it's where the wires go through the door jamb---why does every 124,
but no other car, have this problem?

Philip,

Last time I went down this route, I ordered a set of rebuilt Bosch from
www.buymbparts.com and took them to local independent garage (Star
Motors) that supports our MBCA chapter. They pop-tested while I waited
(about 15 minutes during my lunch break) and all the injectors fell
within a 5 bar range and had good spray patterns. I think they charged
me $30 or some such. My plan was to have them balanced if required at
the local Bosch shop for $15 per, 1 day turn-around. Local Bosch shop
could not do pop-test while I waited, that's why I went to the
independent.

OM617.95x injectors are more complex than OM60x (unless they changed the
design since I looked into it), and once I dug into the actual
pop-testing procedures it became clear that a certain amount of
experience and skill is required to evaluate the test results and know
what to do when you get a bad result. I too dream about having my own
test set-up, but I think there's a learning curve that goes with it and
so more personal time, of which I don't have enough of at the moment.
I'd rather pay a competent person/shop to do it for me.

to some degree are unavoidable. Also I think that people feel that the

From a probability standpoint, for now, the fears are irrational. But
that's why terrorism is effective. A very small number of people can

Re: [MBZ] Injector rebuild and balance

2010-01-08 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
I've used one other kit from Mercedes source (124 blower motor), and
found it to be pretty close to 'as advertised'; I think they do a good
job but I've only got one experience. This one is at least missing a
good solvent for cleaning the injectors, and I'd verify the claims about
the Monarch nozzles independently (Yankee sounds like a great place to
ask).

You southern guys are breaking my heart. I came home early from work and
spent about 90 minutes on the non-spinning end of a snowblower in -1F temps
and 40 mph winds.

The good news is that I was able to start the outside 240D with only 50
seconds of pre-glow (plus block heater) and could snow-blow its driveway
spot down to the concrete. While it was running, I tucked it into the
currently-unused garage spot normally occupied by the daughter's car (she is
snowed in at her boyfriend's house).

I plan to walk to work tomorrow, because the battery in my 300E is on its
last leg and I don't want to see if it will indeed start in -20F temps after
sitting outside my office for the workday. If the battery will make it two
more months, then it will be okay for the next nine months. It works well
but doesn't have the CCA needed for this climate.

Sounds like your memory was better:

A diesel engine will NOT idle smoothly if the injector pop pressures
exceed a 5 bar range. With the pressure matched even closer (2-3 bar)
the engine will idle even more smoothly (providing everything else is

One last quote on injector tolerances:

All of the injectors should be within 5 bar of one another (the tolerable window
for new or rebuilt injectors from Bosch is 10 bar). Getting the injectors closer
than that (within 1 or 2 bar) will smooth the idle a bit more, but that's a LOT
of work. I seem to recall that the standard shim increment changes pressure by 3
bar. To get closer than that the shims need to be ground by hand.

When I order injectors from Yankee, they are typically matched to
within 2 bar of one another. The result is well worth it and it will
show on a healthy motor that is properly maintained. Idle quality,
power, and overall efficiency are greatly affected by injector
characteristics.

Having worked for Yankee during my college years, I can say that when
he matches them to that tolerance, 2 bar variance, he often has to hand
grind the shims. It costs more for that level of tolerance, but it is
well worth it.

Rebuilding injectors is not difficult, but it is an art that is honed
with time. It is a tedious task to make the injectors perform
optimally, a task very few are willing to invest the time into.

I remember it happening once, -25F. Diesel busses wouldn't start.
It rarely gets that cold where my parents live so they don't have outlets to
plug the busses in...

They canceled school for mud once too, the busses all parked in an unpaved lot
and one spring they couldn't get 'em out. Took all day (we went over to watch)
and once they did they didn't park them there again for a couple weeks. Once
the parking lot dried up they dumped ever so many loads of crushed stone onto
it and it was never a problem again.

2010-01-08 Thread LarryT

Hi Max,
I've yet to do my DVs since it's so greatly improved following the MMs - but
the DVS are leaking and need t be changed. I was considering your
suggestion about doing 1, start the engine, then move to the next one. When
I looked at my 91 300D, it looks like I need to at least partly remove the
manifold to access the rear 3 or 4 DVs so I'd rather not try your procedure.

However, you said Easy to do the procedure right and still have a
problem, - that's pretty depressing! Do it right and STILL have a
problem? Jeez, what a PITA.

I may have to let the dealer do it if that's the way it is. I really don't
want to damage the IP!

Please explain how I might follow the torque instructions and *still* have a
problem --- Or better, how can I follow the instructions and do it *right*
the first time?

Gotta go, my head is spinning. Time to defornicate...;-)

It's not that bad, just requires very specific steps, cleanliness,
patience, and the right tools including the special socket and a torque
wrench, and some parts. However, easy to screw up and cause expensive
damage if done wrong, so handing off to a pro is the right choice in
some circumstances.

If you detect any new noises from the injection pump, one or more of the
DV's has not set correctly during the torque procedure and needs to be
re-torqued (torque to 30Nm, release, torque to 30Nm, release, torque to
35Nm and lock down). Easy to do the procedure right and still have a
problem, but that noise is due to a warped IP body which will cause
expensive damage if not fixed. For that reason and to avoid confusion
about which DV might be the cause of such a hypothetical noise, I think
it's best to do one DV at a time and start-run the engine briefly after
each DV has been re-sealed and locked down.

I like the new word: defornicate. Don't mis-underestimate its uses!

[MBZ] OT: Does anybody remember?

2010-01-08 Thread Curt Raymond
I remember seeing what I think was the intro to a '50s movie where an animated
pinstripe runs all over a car... I remember seeing it on (I think) HBO during

Yes, the stethoscope would be of great value and would probably allow
you to narrow down to the one or two DV's that were making the noise.
However, I would use it between each DV during the engine re-start to
reduce or eliminate the extra noise from having the intake manifold
removed.

Lowcountry cold: Weatherguessers predicted sleet maybe ice for the
Lowcountry, but when I woke this a.m. I thought our heat pump had died
during the night because I didn't hear it running. Thought about who I
was going to call for help but decided to bump up the thermostat to test
it, and it came on just fine. Outside temperature at 45 deg F is about
20 deg higher than last week and about 13 deg higher than predictions.

When I was at Purdue back in 70s we had a week where the temps never got
above 0F even during the day, one night got to -25F, I somehow got my 75
Grand Prix started the next morning when it was still about that. It
took a few cranks and maybe some ether, but it finally lit off while
protesting mightily. And we had lots of snow around too. After moving
to warmer climes I still wonder how I survived that unpleasantness.
Maybe being young and knowing everything? Cold here now in the
Lowcountry and I hate it.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel delivery valve job

2010-01-08 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
According to my recollection of Marshall Booth's descriptions, it is
possible to follow correct torque procedure (30Nm - release - 30Nm -
release - 35Nm - lockdown) and still warp the IP body, which requires a
re-do.

My idea of doing one at a time (when doing them all) would help you
determine which one had warped the IP body. I admit I've only rebuilt
all of them at once on two different motors, and on neither motor did I
start the engine between each DV rebuilt. Both were OM60x engines and
on neither did I have any problems, but a thought experiment lead me to
believe that an engine start to listen to the IP between each DV might
be wise. Could be either too difficult or worthless if you have the
intake manifold off when you re-start and can't hear anything different
because of the extra noise from the intake openings in the head.

Maybe you should only do the leaking DV's in order to reduce the
possibility of a problem?

Hi Max,
I've yet to do my DVs since it's so greatly improved following the MMs -
but the DVS are leaking and need t be changed. I was considering your
suggestion about doing 1, start the engine, then move to the next one.
When I looked at my 91 300D, it looks like I need to at least partly
remove the manifold to access the rear 3 or 4 DVs so I'd rather not try
your procedure.

However, you said Easy to do the procedure right and still have a
problem, - that's pretty depressing! Do it right and STILL have a
problem? Jeez, what a PITA.

I may have to let the dealer do it if that's the way it is. I really
don't want to damage the IP!

Please explain how I might follow the torque instructions and *still*
have a problem --- Or better, how can I follow the instructions and do
it *right* the first time?

Gotta go, my head is spinning. Time to defornicate...;-)

It's not that bad, just requires very specific steps, cleanliness,
patience, and the right tools including the special socket and a
torque wrench, and some parts. However, easy to screw up and cause
expensive damage if done wrong, so handing off to a pro is the right
 choice in some circumstances.

If you detect any new noises from the injection pump, one or more of
the DV's has not set correctly during the torque procedure and needs
to be re-torqued (torque to 30Nm, release, torque to 30Nm, release,
torque to 35Nm and lock down). Easy to do the procedure right and
still have a problem, but that noise is due to a warped IP body which
will cause expensive damage if not fixed. For that reason and to
avoid confusion about which DV might be the cause of such a
hypothetical noise, I think it's best to do one DV at a time and
start-run the engine briefly after each DV has been re-sealed and
locked down.

I like the new word: defornicate. Don't mis-underestimate its uses!

I have done enough of these sorts of simple jobs that end up

have a pro do it, since the past few times under the hood, I ended up
having a shop defornicate the mess I made.

escaped with our dog and the clothes that were in the dryer as we fled
out of the home and were lucky to make it through the water current as
our driveway was already awash. It was akin to watching the Titanic
going down from the street before the entire cul-de-sac went awash. The
water was roughly 30' deep in our back yard when all was said and done
and three foundation walls of the house are now compromised.

FEMA is a bloody joke, you are completely subjected to the whims and
incompetence of their adjuster with little recourse. If it were not for

flood insurance company, but looks like we will have resolution on part

I've had a similar insurance experience in a different context. It's
going to court later this month, so I don't want to say much about it.
By the time I pay the attorney fees I will recover only a fraction of
the money if any. I think that some insurers just flat refuse to pay
claims, knowing that the only recourse for the insured is to hire a
lawyer and go to court. And since attorney fees are generally the
responsibility of the individual parties, you risk collecting nothing or
even being negative if you do this, even if you have a legitimate case.

Good luck!

De UnderAchieva has traction control. The first time it snowed last fall, the
engine felt sluggish, then I noticed that T/C was turned on. I'd be churning
through the snow, the computer would retard the timing, and I'd feed more
throttle to keep the wheels going... The result was just wasted fuel. I turned
off T/C and haven't wanted to turn it back on, other than to get rid of the
warning light at night.

One time I used cruise control and traction control going up an icy hill to see
how the car would deal with it. The C/C mashed the throttle, the traction loss
warning light came on, and the C/C hit the throttle harder and the tranny
downshifted. The car never downshifts on that hill, but it does when the
traction control is killing the power.
Wouldn't intelligent design require the cruise control to shut off under
conditions that didn't allow it to hold a steady speed without wheelspin?

De UnderAchieva has traction control. The first time it snowed last
fall, the engine felt sluggish, then I noticed that T/C was turned on.
I'd be churning through the snow, the computer would retard the
timing, and I'd feed more throttle to keep the wheels going... The
result was just wasted fuel. I turned off T/C and haven't wanted to
turn it back on, other than to get rid of the warning light at night.

One time I used cruise control and traction control going up an icy
hill to see how the car would deal with it. The C/C mashed the
throttle, the traction loss warning light came on, and the C/C hit the
throttle harder and the tranny downshifted. The car never downshifts
on that hill, but it does when the traction control is killing the power.
Wouldn't intelligent design require the cruise control to shut off
under conditions that didn't allow it to hold a steady speed without
wheelspin?

Doing them one by one and testing between on an
OM606 is a major PITA; you have to pull all of the injector pipes and

I believe the issue with warping the IP is due to the valve elements
propensity for being off-center in the bores. If you carefully center
the elements you may not have trouble.

Getting the injectors closer than that (within 1 or 2 bar) will smooth
the idle a bit more, but that's a LOT of work. I seem to recall that
the standard shim increment changes pressure by 3 bar. To get closer
than that the shims need to be ground by hand.

Max,

No offense, I really don't want to re-live the experience yet. The
wounds are too fresh and I do not want to be a side show. The short of
it is a 15 foot deep river went through our home. The waters began
coming in at 3:30AM and we were lucky to escape with our lives. We
escaped with our dog and the clothes that were in the dryer as we fled
out of the home and were lucky to make it through the water current as
our driveway was already awash. It was akin to watching the Titanic
going down from the street before the entire cul-de-sac went awash.
The water was roughly 30' deep in our back yard when all was said and
done and three foundation walls of the house are now compromised.

FEMA is a bloody joke, you are completely subjected to the whims and
incompetence of their adjuster with little recourse. If it were not
for close friends we would have been on the street. Still battling
with the flood insurance company, but looks like we will have
resolution on part of the claim soon. It took hiring an attorney and a
public adjuster to make this happen. It is clear that in no way will
we be made whole. Quite the mess!

i have to say something about those floods. i live above the water and had
no idea that there was anything going on besides heavy rain for a long
time. it was only when i tried to go out to the store that i realized the
magnitude of the disaster. the river and streams just literally created
lakes. bridges were largely wiped out and low lying items found themselves
under water.

when i bought my house, altitude relative to bodies of water was not even
considered. my advice is to buy high and buy on rock. (but don't buy when
high on rock!)

All of our neighbors had no flood insurance. Granted they still have
habitable homes, many of them did wind up with 5 figure losses. Our
community pulled together to help one another out after the flood. We
give thanks for the fact that we did have flood insurance as it seems
it will turn out OK for the most part. Still it is not near enough to
rebuild or replace what was lost and temporary housing is not part of
the policy. Having our health is the key. The worst of it is the loss
of family pictures and the like. The rest is just stuff, including the
cars. It seems Cobb county is doing a good job of taking care of its
habitants who were effected. Gwinnett county... well that is another
story. My heart goes out to anyone who has gone through something like
this.

what all cars did you lose in the flood?

Gwinnett county... well that is another
story. My heart goes out to anyone who has gone through something like
this.

Re: [MBZ] the mighty german strikes again

2010-01-08 Thread Gary Hurst
they are really like having little out of control children. so needy. so
bold.

and yet when it comes to action at defending the pack they throw it into
aggressive mode without a moments hesitation.

they dont' seem to mind heat or cold or hard work. the only thing i've
found that they really hate doing is carrying or pulling weight. i'd also
presume that their prey drive would make them pretty useless for hunting as
well. apart from that, this old german farm dog is up for any kind of
action.

really, much more useful than most of the english farm dogs, albeit not
quite as magnificent a herder. i'd say they are the most useful of this
type of working dog, although i do have a fondness for the great south
georgia plantation bulldogs.

A German with the squirts... brings back nasty memories of my youth from
when we had five of them around the shop. Browned chop meat and rice will
take care of things if this does not stop on its own in 24 hours or so. From
 squirts to dust bombs!

Re: [MBZ] Fuel delivery valve job

2010-01-08 Thread OK Don
I've done the job on 2 603's and 2 602s - doing all the valves at once, and
never had a problem. I did follow the instructions to the letter, and was
very careful. Some were leaking before, noe after. Never did notice any
change in noise.

On Fri, Jan 8, 2010 at 3:33 PM, John Reames jwrea...@comcast.net wrote:

Doing them one by one and testing between on an

I believe the issue with warping the IP is due to the valve elements
propensity for being off-center in the bores. If you carefully center the
elements you may not have trouble.

Disclaimer: I've only done the job once on each of the 2 OM606's that we
 have
