Re: [MBZ] OT - Quantas and Airbus A380

2010-11-06 Thread OK Don
*FYI - *

(Reuters) - Australia's Qantas Airways hopes to have its grounded fleet of
six Airbus A380s flying again within days following urgent checks after an
engine failure, chief executive Alan Joyce said on Saturday.

Joyce said he was optimistic that the world's largest passenger plane would
pass the tests, as two safety incidents on consecutive days overshadowed
lavish celebrations to mark the airline's 90th anniversary this month.

The airline grounded its six A380s after an engine failure on one of the
aircraft on Thursday during a flight to Australia, which forced it to make
an emergency landing in Singapore.

It marked the biggest incident to date for the world's largest passenger
plane, which has been in service since 2007. The incident forced other
airlines to recheck their own A380s.

We are hopeful that within days we will have our A380 fleet flying again,
Joyce said at an event in Sydney to mark the anniversary this month of the
founding of Qantas in 1920.

In a second incident on Friday, a Boeing 747 en route to Australia was also
forced to turn back to Singapore. Joyce said an engine on that plane
produced smoke and sparks but called it a contained engine failure and
said there were no plans to ground the airline's 747 fleet.

We are not concerned about our 747 fleet, he said.

However, the incidents have cast a shadow over Qantas' anniversary
celebrations, which on Saturday included a visit by Hollywood actor John
Travolta, who is a pilot and an aviation enthusiast.

Travolta piloted his own vintage 707 in old Qantas livery for the cameras
before voicing his personal support for the airline.

The Qantas brand around the world is very strong, Travolta said.

A Qantas spokeswoman told Reuters that although both Thursday and Friday's
incidents involved Rolls-Royce engines they were of different types and the
incidents were distinct.

They are different aircraft and they are different engines. They are very
different incidents, she said.

Shares in Rolls-Royce, Airbus parent EADS and Qantas all lost ground on
Friday following Thursday's incident.

Much thanks to Wilton for the invite AND picking up the tab. Was a very

dieselitus maximitus sufferer, we took our time for the rest of the
trip and rolled into the home driveway at about 10 p.m.

I did indulge in a little fast driving on '95 in South Carolina; a very
nice W140 and a R129 cruised by at about 90 mph, and I just couldn't
hold my wagon back. We briefly exceed 100 in a very nice formation, all
the rice burners fell away, then after 30 minutes or so the R129 and I
had had enough and the S-class faded away in the distance.

 *FYI - *

(Reuters) - Australia's Qantas Airways hopes to have its
 grounded fleet of
six Airbus A380s flying again within days following
 urgent checks after an
engine failure, chief executive Alan Joyce said on
 Saturday.

Joyce said he was optimistic that the world's largest
 passenger plane would
pass the tests, as two safety incidents on consecutive days
 overshadowed
lavish celebrations to mark the airline's 90th anniversary
 this month.

The airline grounded its six A380s after an engine failure
 on one of the
aircraft on Thursday during a flight to Australia, which
 forced it to make
 an emergency landing in Singapore.

It marked the biggest incident to date for the world's
 largest passenger
plane, which has been in service since 2007. The incident
 forced other
airlines to recheck their own A380s.

We are hopeful that within days we will have our A380
 fleet flying again,
Joyce said at an event in Sydney to mark the anniversary
 this month of the
 founding of Qantas in 1920.

In a second incident on Friday, a Boeing 747 en route to
 Australia was also
forced to turn back to Singapore. Joyce said an engine on
 that plane
produced smoke and sparks but called it a contained
 engine failure and
said there were no plans to ground the airline's 747
 fleet.

We are not concerned about our 747 fleet, he said.

However, the incidents have cast a shadow over Qantas'
 anniversary
celebrations, which on Saturday included a visit by
 Hollywood actor John
Travolta, who is a pilot and an aviation enthusiast.

Travolta piloted his own vintage 707 in old Qantas livery
 for the cameras
before voicing his personal support for the airline.

The Qantas brand around the world is very strong,
 Travolta said.

A Qantas spokeswoman told Reuters that although both
 Thursday and Friday's
incidents involved Rolls-Royce engines they were of
 different types and the
 incidents were distinct.

They are different aircraft and they are different
 engines. They are very
 different incidents, she said.

Shares in Rolls-Royce, Airbus parent EADS and Qantas all
 lost ground on
 Friday following Thursday's incident.

I'll get the photos and share soon - need to pry SWMBO's blackberry from
her hands for a few minutes to download those pix and probably thousands
of others that also need to be backed up.

Much thanks to Wilton for the invite AND picking up the tab. Was a very
nice break during the 540 mile trip, great to finally meet another
dieselitus maximitus sufferer, we took our time for the rest of the
trip and rolled into the home driveway at about 10 p.m.

I did, and could have suffered the same fate as you. Turns out one of
the tires I rotated from rear to front had lived on the rear axle too
long, and the inside edge had worn down to the belts in one spot about
three inches long, and a separation had started. Had a good spare, paid
shop to balance all four, and back on the road about 60 minutes later.
New tires are on the agenda...

Do get them checked. I had a problem like that on a road trip once
years ago and it turned out that the tread was separating. We blew a
tire at high speed. Stopped safely and all but it was a bit of
excitement I could live without repeating.

[MBZ] Diversity of Diesel fuel

2010-11-06 Thread WILTON
Talk of waxing vehicles reminds of an incident in which I was involved well
over 40 years ago:

DEFIANCE

In 1967, while I was on nuclear alert with B-52's at Robins AFB, GA, ready to
takeoff at a moment's notice and strike targets in The Soviet Union, our alert
facility manager, an up-tight officer whom we called, Major Daddy, suddenly
decided that we air crewmen should wash, wax and polish our ground vehicles
(four-door, crew-cab pickups), so that he could try to impress a general
visiting from higher headquarters. He had no command authority over us, and we
certainly weren't fond of the idea of helping him try to suck-up to the
general. Amongst the five officers on each crew, there were grumblings, such
as, If an officer prisoner of war (POW) can't be required to do manual labor,
how can we be required to wax and polish these vehicles? We officers were
somewhat angry.

We had finally decided that we would do it, though, and were prepared to begin
the task as we returned to our parking space outside the alert facility early
one morning after performing the daily required inspection of our aircraft and
weapons (bombs). As we backed into our parking space, I noticed that a
sergeant (a gunner on another crew) was wiping lightly with a rag on the bright
and glistening truck beside us. Only 20 minutes earlier, when we had left the
parking space to go out to our aircraft, that truck had been as drab dark blue
as ours and all the rest of them. We jumped out of our vehicle and asked the
sergeant, What have you done? How did you do that? He replied, Bucket of
water with a little bit of Diesel fuel in it - just dip the rag in the bucket
and wipe the vehicle down with it. In about 10 minutes, all of the alert
vehicles were glistening in the sun with their new coats of Diesel fuel -
worked well for several weeks, too, and didn't look oily, etc. They really
looked like they had been waxed. We never said any more about it, and we never
heard any more about waxing vehicles.

BTW, this is in no way an endorsement for using Diesel fuel as a substitute for
a proper waxing, nor is it a endorsement for dishonesty and/or deception - if
anybody had asked us how we had waxed the vehicles so fast, we would have
quickly replied, We wiped 'em down with a thin coat of Diesel fuel. This is
merely an example of innovative compromise by a group of defiant B-52 air
crewmen more than 43 years ago.

Well, I notice that the charging meter stays low for a while with the engine
running (so I guess that the glow plugs are still active). I'm not sure if
the glowing stops while the starter is turning over or not.

Got it.

Does the glow actually turn off when the light turns off? Or is
it like my 123s, where the glow continues - with the light just
as an advisor?

[MBZ] '90 300D 2.5 Turbo engine temp

2010-11-06 Thread OK Don
The '90 (with ~280k miles) has been progressively trying to overheat. The
temp stays around 85C on the highway, but in stop and go, or crawl and speed
rush hour traffic, the temps climb over 100C. In stop and go traffic (in
town), the aux fans fire at a little over 100C, and brings the temp down to
near the usual 85C. the rush hours traffic however, doesn't respond to the
aux fans enough to keep the temp under 100C, and it climbs toward 120,
though it hasn't quite gotten there yet.

I replaced the T-stat years ago thinking that it was likely to be the
culpret, and was a cheap, easy job. It had no effect.

A few months ago, it started loosing coolant, and I found it leaking at the
upper end of the left tank. I replaced the radiator with a new one (from
Rusty), and thought this would cure the temps as well (clogged radiator or
crap between it and the condenser). No joy. the leak stopped, but the temp
behaior is the same. This was in the summer with air temps between 90 and
100F.

It's now in the 60-75F air temp, and the coolant temp is still climbing more
than it should in the rush hour traffic.

I'm thinking either there's a lot of scale in the block, preventing heat
transfer to the coolant, or the viscous fan coupler is shot, and the aux
fans aren't up to the task in the rush hour traffic.

Any ideas???

Visco clutch is shot, replace it. You have all the classic symptoms,
but it's easy to check -- must run up briefly when you first start,
and when it should be pulling (engine hot), shut off the engine with
the stop lever -- fan must stop within one revolution. Any more, or
failure to spin up cold, the clutch is bad.

BTW, how likely is it that the temperature indication is incorrect (bad

Re: [MBZ] 126 ball joints FINISHED

2010-11-06 Thread Dieselhead
Finished the job today. Inner bolt on the upper arm, left side, is a
bugger. All in all pretty straightforward once you know the wheel
carrier has to come out. On the right side, you have to take out the
washer tank, battery, and battery tray. While the tray was out, I
cleaned it and primed and painted it.

On the left side, I took loose the vacuum line at the booster and a
cable terminal block at the inner firewall to try to get my hand in.
As always, you have to be careful with the little nipple for the
branch vacuum line.

On the washer tank, one of the rubber seals for the pumps broke, so
now I need to send more jingies to Mr. Q.

Forgot to pump up the brakes first. Got a thrill when I got to the
end of the drive. Got the brakes working but did not test drive it
yet. Spent the limited daylight messing with the tractor.

Actually it cannot be extracted and inserted with the hub still
attached to the knuckle. It is pressed into the knuckle from the
top, and the bore for it is angled so that the top of the LBJ leans
toward the spindle/hub.
