Actually, I thought it was a fairly decent job to do. I actually felt
good about doing it. I cannot say that about changing the thermostat.
I definitely cannot say that about changing the power steering pump!

The instructions I got from Alex Chamberlain and Peter Frederick were
quite helpful. The pictures, of course, are even better for anyone else
who needs to do it.

If
you remove the console pannel to access the fader switch, there are 4
connectors there, one for each speaker. Tap in there for clean
access to your speakers without going into the dash.

too lazy to pull the driver's kick panel to run that wire, well mostly
its too rainy for me to be working with the door open...

Re: [MBZ] California Version - 1985 300TD

2011-03-06 Thread David Bruckmann
Finally dredged up my TDM. Boiled down version:

Non-turbos 123.123 (240D), 123.130 (300D), 123.190 (300TD) up to 1979: start in
second, no kickdown unless full throttle applied.

1980 to September 1984: 123.12x; 123.13x and 123.19x (turbo and non-turbo):
idle in second, kickdown to first with the slightest application of the
accelerator.

October 1984 (= 1985 model year) to end of series 123: idle in first and start
in first without any application of accelerator pedal. They will also shift
down into first when approaching a standstill (at about 13km/h).

1985 California version is basically identical to Federal except that the 1-2
shift happens at a slightly (2-5km/h) lower speed, and the stall speed on the
torque converter is higher (2400-2700 vs 2100-2300 Federal). Other shift
behaviour is same as Federal.

Curt Raymond wrote:
>My '84 190D doesn't kick down unless I cram down on the go pedal, even then

To Curt's point: oddly, the 1984/85 190E 2.3 (201.024) and 190D 2.2 (201.122),
as well as a couple of Euro 123, 124 and 126 gasser models, start in second no
matter the position of the shift lever. The only way to get into first is
indeed to use the pedal to kick down. I assume this related to the shift gate
being labelled D/3/2 instead of D/S/L.

So Curt, no adjustments needed on your 190D!

Same thing! Down in Cajun country the same one serves for seafood
boil and for frying crawdaddy, or whatever. Unless you want to
spring for peanut oil, canola oil has a lower smoke point than soy
oil. Heat it to 375, add the fries a little at a time, just enough
to keep the oil from boiling over. When they are browned enough,
pull em out. Buy some popcorn salt to shake over them. It is a
finer grain, so it sticks better. Regular salt will fall off.

Re: [MBZ] valve stem seals replacement

2011-03-06 Thread Dieselhead

Why?

After 25-30 years, the rubber gets rotten
After 20-30 years and 200-400K miles, they are worn out. When the
turbo is running, , it may be true that the small pressure boost may
help prevent oil loss, but how much time does your engine spend with
the turbo not at full boost/low boost/no boost?

It will cut smoking
It will lower oil consumption

On my high mile SDL, the only major things I did was a new timing
chain and I replaced the valve seals at 315K M/L.

So why are you doing it?

Marshall claimed there was no need on diesels but there were folks
on here (Dave M?) who claimed it was required...

Re: [MBZ] Changing the thermostat on the E420

2011-03-06 Thread OK Don
Good write-up and photo series. Which reminds me, there is a leak around the
water pump on the ML320 -- which is only 1½ years old. This means that the
indie shop that replaced it botched the job. I can't see around the pump
well enough to tell exactly where it's coming from, but there aren't many
other options in the neighborhood. I did have to add a quart or so of
coolant tonight to top off the tank - that was getting near the the min
mark, so it's not too bad a leak - that was lost over 6 months or so. I'll
add the gasket set for the water pump to the Rusty list --- and the job to
my list.

If
you remove the console pannel to access the fader switch, there are 4
connectors there, one for each speaker.  Tap in there for clean
access to your speakers without going into the dash.

Indeed, the pre-1980 (722.1) diesel transmissions started in second unless you
mash the pedal to force a kickdown. That would have applied to the early 240D
and non-turbo 300D up to and including 1979. The 126 diesels did the cable
kickdown from the beginning of the series (1981). Not sure about the post-1980
240D, but I'm pretty certain that all the 1980 and later 617s did it, including
the 1980 non-turbo 300D and presumably the 1980 W116 diesel.

The part I don't understand about your MC issues is that there isn't a
bleed port on the MC. The system bleeds entirely through the slave,
which is why you must pressure bleed it.

The system, by the book, bleeds entirely through the MC, back
to the reservoir. You use the lower bleed screw to hook to
a brake bleeder, and pressurize it that way. Has worked every
time for me this way.

[MBZ] Changing the thermostat on the E420

2011-03-06 Thread Craig
Since I got the '94 E420 running, I noticed that its temperature was low
when it was cold outside. A few weeks ago, I changed the thermostat and
found more joy under the hood. :-)

I took pictures of the process and have attached them.

Picture 0 shows the overall view of the engine compartment after I
started. I took the upper radiator hose off the engine and
rotated it vertically to keep antifreeze from draining out.
I had already taken off the part to which the upper radiator
hose attached, thinking that that was where the thermostat
was. I was wrong. (You can see the aluminum casting sitting
on the left distributor cover just above the power steering
   fluid reservoir.)

Picture 1 shows a close-up of the mating parts to that which I removed.
I should have put the part back on, but I left it off thinking
I would need the extra room.

Picture 2 shows where the thermostat is (it's in the part to which the
large rubber ell hose connects -- at this point, though, I
wasn't entirely sure, thanks to the WONDERFUL W124 manuals).

Picture 3 shows the tightening screw of the lower hose clamp that needs
   to be loosened.

Picture 4 shows the ell hose off and the back screw of the thermostat
housing being removed. The engine oil dip stick needs to be
forcibly pushed out of the way.

Picture 5 shows the custom tool needed to hook under the bottom lip of
the ell hose and pull it up to loosen the bond of the rubber to
the aluminum and remove it from its lower connection. This tool
was actually made to twist the steel wire ties around re-bar
when one is preparing the steel work for reinforced concrete.
Since I had done that kind of work in the past, I had one
   around.

Picture 6 shows the tool needed to pull the thermostat out of its
housing. The joint between the thermostat and the hose adaptor
that attaches over it is with a small o-ring that the hose
adaptor compresses against the thermostat and outer housing. If
it's been there awhile, it doesn't want to come out!

Picture 7 show the thermostat out! Even if it had been good, it is now
   headed for the trash can.

Picture 8 shows another view of the area with the thermostat out.

Picture 9 shows the thermostat in and the large ell hose reconnected.
Getting the hose back on was even more fun than getting it off,
since it's so short and overlaps the hose adaptors on both of
its ends by a large percentage of its length. Recall that I
said the dip stick needed to be pushed forcibly out of the way?
If you're not careful, you can push the plastic end of the dip
stick and break it off, like I did. Fortunately, it's sealed
by o-rings, so nothing will get down into the pan. My neighbor
said changing the thermostat on his big Chevy van was a real
bear of a job, so I guess I don't feel so bad. The W123 617 is
   so much nicer, though.

Picture 10 Remember when I said I should have put back on the piece I
originally took off? When its off, the gasket, which has
adhered to the part still attached to the block, can be
damaged and you get to make a new one. Here's the start of the
   process.

Picture 11 shows the completed gasket on the part it is to seal.

Picture 12 shows the part ready with Permatex 6B blue silicone to receive
   the gasket.

Picture 13 shows the gasket on the part and with a coat of Permatex,
ready to be put back on the engine. After this point, it's
   trivial.

Re: [MBZ] valve stem seals replacement

2011-03-06 Thread Dieselhead
Do it. No special tools required. You will like the results, if you
have smoke on startup.
Rule #1 USE ONLY OEM SEALS! Rusty has em. OE seals are cheaper than
FLAPS seals, and better.

Take off the valve cover, remove the tensioner for the chain. Remove
the valve followers. now come the choices:

1. You can leave the cam in place and work around it.
2. You can remove the cam with the sprocket wired to the cam.
3. You can replace the cam temporarily with a stub.
What is handy is if you have access to a dead camshaft. Cut it off
behind the first cam bearing. keep the front end. throw away the
back end.

What you have to do is work on one cyl at a time (two on a 4 cyl)
with the piston at TDC.
So, set #1 to TDC. You check TDC by pushing down a valve with a
screwdriver. You should feel a solid thud as the valve hits the
piston. This is necessary to hold up the valves while you work. You
don't want to drop a valve in the hole.

What is handy is if you have access to a dead camshaft. Cut it off
behind the first cam bearing. keep the front end. throw away the
back end.

Wire the chain to the cam sprocket in at least two places, so it
can't jump a tooth.

If you choose #1, you are ready
If you choose #2, what you want to do after the shaft is out, is
keep the wires tight when you need to rotate the crank. You will
take one wire out and put it in the next hole of the sprocket as you
turn the crank. The sprocket will just ride on top of the chain
guides.

If you choose #3, pull the cam and replace it with the stub.

When you are ready with #1 at TDC, Loosen the lock nuts on the valve
stems, remove the nut, lock nut, rotator, washer, and spring. DON"T
reverse the INTAKE and EXHAUST parts. (or just do one valve at a
time) Then, pry off the old seal, install the new seal and
reassemble.

After that, follow the firing order. They should all be done in
about 290 degrees on a 5 cyl.

Reassemble, set the clearances.

Good luck.

I'm still pondering whether or not I should attempt replacing the
valve stem seals on my '85 300TD and, for anyone who is familiar
with this job, is the assembly mandrel for valve stem seals tool
(617 589 00 43 00) necessary or can the seals be installed without
using this special tool?  TIA.

Mine is a one way line from MC to slave. The bleed in the MC is at
the top of the cylinder travel and bleeds back up to the brake
reservoir/MC feed. The cylinder must get past the port to allow fluid
expansion back up from the slave up to the brake reservoir. The first
MC we tried did not have that required travel. The one from the
dealer allowed the pedal to be relaxed and the cylinder to open
(bleed) to brake reservoir atmosphere (fine tune with eccentric).
With system in this configuration, we can bleed the slave back up thru
the MC to brake reservoir, and this allows for fluid expansion. Maybe
I have this arrangement in mind messed up - maybe I'm confused - but
that is what I recall, plus dealer part worked. That sez nothing
about our list supplier, just that the numbers never got me to the
correct part.

Re: [MBZ] California Version - 1985 300TD

2011-03-06 Thread ernest breakfield

Andrew,

i think the present owner is confused.
as i understand it (at least with our '85 300D), the injection pump
and trans/torque converter are unique to the '85 vs earlier 300Ds, as
may be the rear differential ratio. (i'm not sure if the rear dif is the
same in the TD or not.)
the '85 Calif version also has the Particulate Trap, so it also has
a different set of manifolds and a different air filter setup than the
Federal (49 state) '85s. i've never heard that there was any difference
in what gear they start out in from anything else like them, but am
admittedly not as familiar with all the rest.

cheers!

normal 1985s, and that the car starts in 2nd gear. I was wondering whether
I could swap out this engine with the 1985 300D engine in my wagon and mate
it with that (normal) 1985 transmission without a lot of custom work. Good
idea or not?

The very serious failure is somebody putting a 300D engine in a 300TD and

What about the "while you're at it" costs? Like, if you're going to have the
head off anyway you might as well go through it and check everything and
replace guides and whatnot. Then you might as well ream the ridge on the engine
and maybe consider rings and hone...

Depending on how long you intend to keep such a car you might end up spending
several thousand on it but on the other hand you'd end up with a great engine.

For my money, changing the head is easier/cheaper than changing the
engine or engine/trans combo.
This is most likely borne out is flat rate manuals for inline 4,5,6
cyl engines.  It also needs no engine hoist.

For the air cooled horizontally opposed VWs, and some other things,
the engine removal is easier.

YMMV

Whether
it actually starts in 2nd or not may actually be a simple
misunderstanding on the part of the PO. As far as I'm aware, all of the
722.3 transmissions used in later 123 and 126 models stay in second when
stopped UNTIL you touch the accelerator, whereupon they instantly kick
down to first. You should be able to feel this behaviour by taking your
foot off the brake at standstill and see what the creep is like vs
having the shift lever in "L". And frankly, on most of them the
modulator and transmission are worn enough that you can feel the "bump"
when it kicks down to first. If it doesn't kick down, the cable probably
 just needs adjusting.

It wouldn't surprise me that the PO
wouldn't be aware of the above: I've met plenty of "Mercedes mechanics"
who didn't know it either.

Personally I love the earlier
transmissions that start in second and do NOT kick down unless forced,
because every time it doesn't shift is one less bit of wear on that
band/clutch pack. As you know, the 85 has a higher stall speed on the
torque convertor, so it should be even more capable of starting in
second without seeming sluggish. And you could always kick down if you
needed the extra kick... But as I said, I suspect this is probably just
the PO not understanding that the design is for it to be in second to
prevent creep, but then to kick down immediately when you apply the
accelerator...

The TDM will clarify what the normal build was for that year, but I don't have
it with me to check.

Because of the shape of the highways unless you go through Canada you pretty
much have to go through MA to go to Maine and RI is just half an hour or so
south of where the east/west and north/south highways meet. Just reschedule
your trip, easy this far out.

Re: [MBZ] '78 240D clutch rod

2011-03-06 Thread Curt Raymond
The part I don't understand about your MC issues is that there isn't a bleed
port on the MC. The system bleeds entirely through the slave, which is why you
must pressure bleed it.

The MC from my '83 fit just fine in the '78, no problems with bolt up or
anything. Worst thing for me is that the reservoir line came off with MC when I
removed it from the '78 so I had to thread it back in...

What you say about the slave makes perfect sense for your year car as it
matches my '83.

I will be interested to see what parts work.
I know that the only master that I could use was the dealer - my labor
(son) was not going to waste his time if I did not purchase dealer
part - which worked.  He had already wasted 6 hours trying to fit non
dealer part.  Problem was the cylinder bleed port could not be
attained with cylinder mounted - perhaps it needed the shorter rod, I
don't recall.

And then, we did the slave.  Again, I wasn't going to waste my labor
time - my deal is I purchase dealer parts, or I do the labor.  Even
then, the dealer did not have the correct part, but the slave was
easier to get to and without any removal labor, it was determined that
the dealer part was wrong, so the car came off the lift.  A call to
Classic center arrived at proper part number and lower cost at dealer.
The correct slave for me looks much like the '85 190D slave at Rusty
site - i.e. mount holes appear offset from center of cylinder, whereas
'78 mount holes are in line with center of cylinder.  My car is '84
euro 240D with clutch.

For the air cooled horizontally opposed VWs, and some other things,
the engine removal is easier.

YMMV

So which is more work 1)detaching the IP, manifold, and turbo before
swapping out the motor; or 2) simply replacing the head with a used one from
a 300TD that has the SLS pump?

If so, could be a bad kickdown solenoid.

I doubt there's much to worry about. Just swap over the manifolds, turbo,

78-79 power the kickdown through the overboost safety relay. It's supposed to
sit in 2nd at a stnadstill with your foot on the brake, then drop into first as
you take off. I always thought 1980 was the same, but I could be wrong. I'm not
sure how you'd know, unless you have a technical manual, or monitor the voltage
to the solenoid.
I suppose you could pull the fuse that powers the kickdown, and if it still
starts in first without that fuse (I believe it also runs the instruments and
the tail lamps) then you're right and I'm wrong.

Re: [MBZ] California Version - 1985 300TD

2011-03-06 Thread Mitch Haley

David Bruckmann wrote:

Whether it actually starts in 2nd or not may actually be a simple misunderstanding on the part of
the PO. As far as I'm aware, all of the 722.3 transmissions used in later 123 and 126 models stay
in second when stopped UNTIL you touch the accelerator, whereupon they instantly kick down to
first. You should be able to feel this behaviour by taking your foot off the brake at standstill
and see what the creep is like vs having the shift lever in "L". And frankly, on most of
them the modulator and transmission are worn enough that you can feel the "bump" when it
kicks down to first. If it doesn't kick down, the cable probably just needs adjusting.

Do they use the kickdown solenoid for first gear start, like the W116 300SD?
If so, could be a bad kickdown solenoid.

I doubt there's much to worry about. Just swap over the manifolds, turbo, etc
from a 48 state car, maybe the IP too. At least I wouldn't want to keep the
catalyst or those $80 air filters.
