That's not a difficult feat, since I am aware of _one_ yard in

A bit over 30,000 miles. Ball joint sort of ate one of them.

recommendations?

What do propane and electricity cost you?
Propane in 20lb cans has to be way more expensive than electric. 3413 btu per
kWh and about 91,500 btu per gallon of propane. At 4.24 pounds per gallon, if
they actually put 20 instead of 16-17 lb in a 20 lb, you're only getting 4.7
gallons.
If 20lb of propane costs more than 125 kWh of electricity, buy electric space
heaters, they're cheaper and safer (but they don't make CO2 and moisture for the
plants).

If you're running propane from a bulk tank, a gallon of propane is worth about
27 kWh. In my case, 2.20 with tax for bulk propane is 40% cheaper than $.135 per
kWh for electric.

Most of those space heaters will be close to 100% efficient if they don't have a
flue venting to the outdoors, but they will also give off corrosive exhaust, so
if you have tools or cars in the garage...

[MBZ] Charging issue!

2013-01-04 Thread dseretakis
OK, I've seem some weird $hit but this one takes the cake:
Yesterday, I changed my battery. The old one didn't appear to charge well for
the past month or so. It left me stranded two days ago about a mile from my
house. Luckily, I had a booster pack which got me going. I drove it home one
mile and didn't expect it to start the next am so I put in a new battery. My
car started in 5 degree temps. I then drove it to Maine as explained in
yesterday's post. The lights started dimming towards the end of the trip. I
parked it in my driveway and didn't expect it to start. I got a battery charger
all ready to go but figured that I'd check the voltage across the posts with a
voltmeter. It read 15V! Confused, I turned on the headlights and they were
super bright. I then proceeded to start the car in 10 degree weather. It
started right up! I then put the voltmeter across the terminals and the
readings jumped around. 17V, then 11V and then the voltage would cycle up and
down. I put the headlights on and it started dropping down to 7V, I turned them
off and it climbed up to 10V. I waited for it to climb up to 12.5 them shut off
the car. Now it won't start and the voltage cycles up and down from 10.5V to
12.5V. Out of curiosity, I tested the old battery in my trunk and it reads a
steady 12.5V! What is going on here!!!
I understand that the voltage regulator could be faulty but why would the
voltage cycle up and down with the car off! And why was the battery overcharged
this am even though the lights were dim when I shut the car off last night!!

There's also the two birds, one stone approach.
Instead of heating the whole garage with a space heater, why not build a box

That is a battery explosion waiting to happen, if so. We had

Recycle it, and don't look back. Then check out your alternator

it home one mile and didn't expect it to start the next am so I put in a
new battery. My car started in 5 degree temps. I then drove it to Maine as
explained in yesterday's post. The lights started dimming towards the end
of the trip. I parked it in my driveway and didn't expect it to start. I
got a battery charger all ready to go but figured that I'd check the
voltage across the posts with a voltmeter. It read 15V! Confused, I turned
on the headlights and they were super bright. I then proceeded to start
the car in 10 degree weather. It started right up! I then put the
voltmeter across the terminals and the readings jumped around. 17V, then
11V and then the voltage would cycle up and down. I put the headlights on
and it started dropping down to 7V, I turned them off and it climbed up to
10V. I waited for it to climb up to 12.5 them shut off the car. Now it
won't start and the voltage cycles up and down from 10.5V to 12.5V. Out
of curiosity, I tested the old battery in my trunk and it reads a steady
12.5V! What is going on here!!!
I understand that the voltage regulator could be faulty but why would the
voltage cycle up and down with the car off! And why was the battery
overcharged this am even though the lights were dim when I shut the car
off last night!!

...
IIRC if the grounding strap from the engine to the frame is making poor
contact, the ground circuit can take a roundabout path through the
transmission, etc to the alternator? Seem to remember a problem like that
years ago that caused similar symptoms.

I had a similar problem recently.I am almost ashamed to say that
the alternator was loose enough, not the belt, the lower alternator bolt
was loose and apparently there was some play in there so it wiggled around
enough to make an intermittent ground. I replaced a battery only to have
it dead the next time I was on a long trip at night. Tightened up slop in
alternator bracket with a washer and been good since.

No experience or knowledge of them.

For sandals or flip flop hybrids I go with Chacos. I got 4-5 years out of

I remember that it was .18 to .23/gal early to mid forties and .24 to .26
early to mid fifties; in .30's in 1960's and in shock when it went to .47 in
'73 or so. In '50/'51, I'd drive brother's '49 Ford all week for $1.00 (He
had been re-called to Army; I was junior/senior in high school; very
generous and kind brother had left car in my care, which I did very well,
thank you - no kidding, I did, and he was well pleased when he returned.)

Now I get dinged for $60 a week if I'm lucky and don't drive the TE.

2013-01-04 Thread Curt Raymond
Strangely I'm the opposite, mine almost always require an alternator.

BTW about 100 miles on the '84 190D's replacement alternator and apparently I
got the spacing right to keep the belt okay. I did stop and get a new belt
before heading to the airport for my latest trip. I worried that if I didn't
I'd be stranded but if I did there would of course be no problem. This time I
decided to go with discretion...

IME in almost every case it is the voltage regulator/brushes module that is
bad. At $20-30 and about 15 minutes of work it is a piece of cake. Out of
all the times I have gone through this with my 123s and 126s, only once did
I have to put in a new (used) alternator.

Thats right Rick, there are just lots of these cars around here if you know
where to look.

This car found me... a friend of a friend put me in contact with the
seller. He never advertised it, just word of mouth.

Oddly enough, its a few blocks from where my 79 300SD was living its whole
life, and across the street was a perfect W201 with blue NJ plate sitting
in a car port. Looks like the folks in that town were really into their
MBs in the 70s and 80s.

But keep in mind theres a huge amount of junk out there and most cars
aren't even worth looking at. And the cars I buy are ones that most people
are terrified of: ones that have sat unused for long periods of time. But
getting them back into original running condition is what I enjoy doing.

I don't enjoy undoing lots of clown-mechanic repairs, like the ones found
on a 280C I worked on all day today.

I think I mentioned buying a Made-in-the-USA pair of Redwings about 2 years
ago. Best dammed boots I've ever had. Like somebody else said no break in time
at all, super comfortable right out of the box.

Last year I bought a pair of Made in Italy hiking boots at LL Bean. They're not
bad but they're serious hiking boots not the tall sneakers I usually wear.
They're taking FOREVER to break in and they're heavy but have excellent support
and are warm when needed and cool when not. Expensive but if they last several
years they'll be worth it.

Re: [MBZ] Should have known better- alternator woes.

2013-01-04 Thread Curt Raymond
Having just done this I think the ease of removal on a 123 involves 2 factors:
1. Tensioning device
2. Presence of salt on the roads (and driving the car in said salt)

My '78 240D has the older gear type tensioning device and it was an absolute
bugger to get the bolt out, I think the presence of salt made that worse.

OTOH my '84 190D was super duper easy. Remove the belt and wiring (pull the
negative battery cable first!) pull 2, drop out alternator, put in new
alternator and assuming they're exactly the same (mine was NOT) its two bolts
back in, belt back on, wiring, ground cable and you're done. The lack of
pivoting on the 190D alternator makes the bolts easier...

Having just done this I think the ease of removal on a 123 involves 2 factors:

My '78 240D has the older gear type tensioning device and it was an absolute
bugger to get the bolt out, I think the presence of salt made that worse.

OTOH my '84 190D was super duper easy. Remove the belt and wiring (pull the
negative battery cable first!) pull 2, drop out alternator, put in new
alternator and assuming they're exactly the same (mine was NOT) its two bolts
back in, belt back on, wiring, ground cable and you're done. The lack of
pivoting on the 190D alternator makes the bolts easier...

It used to be like that around here to some extent. All of the blue hairs that
would come down here to die would have a nice old MB sitting in the garage.

When I do see these (and I watch the local CL pretty closely) any more they
seem to have unrealistic expectations as to the cars value. I don't know where
they are getting their number, or if they're just pulling them out of the air,
but it seems like if it's a vintage MB, it's suddenly priceless.

There is a guy down here who has a pretty nice early 70s 280S (not SE) that
thinks it's worth $14k because he bought it from the estate of the original
owner and it only has 80k on it. Granted, it's a nice car, but it has some
wear and minor mechanical issues that he isn't willing to address because he
thinks it's a perfect vintage automobile.

Yeah, right.

I talked to him a few months ago about the car, even took a quick look a it. I
could tell the way he talked he thought he struck the mother lode with this
one. I didn't bother to offer any critiques, I just left.

It's still popping up on CL about every two weeks or so - at the same price.

Re: [MBZ] Rejuvenating Long Parked Cars

2013-01-04 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
It really depends on what kind of car, how long its been sitting, and in
what type of conditions it was stored. My 450SLC 5.0 was a pretty extreme
case, having been sitting 10+ years.

It was important that it was stored in a dry place. That is, looking under
the valve covers showed no rust at all. Just oily surfaces. If you see
rust, its bad, might be junk.

Heres a short (and probably incomplete list of what was done):
1) Replace complete fuel system, everything: used fuel tank, new pump,
filter, accumulator, all hoses at tank and engine, rebuilt fuel
distributor, rebuilt warm up regulator, new injectors. Blow out and flush
solid lines.
2) Remove plugs, put some oil in cylinders, and make sure engine can rotate
by hand. You may want to soak, etc here.
3) With fresh oil and filter, and plugs still out, crank engine with
starter to build oil pressure. Best done without fuel pump running.
4) Install new plugs, if ignition looks questionable, replace everything.
5) Start engine.
6) Do some basic tuning, it should run pretty well at this point. Now
identify everything else you need to do.

From here: replace all fluids (trans, PS, diff, coolant). All brakes,
including hoses. Then you can drive the car a bit and see what else you
need to do.

The point is to replace everything so the car is reliable and you're not
chasing gremlins for months or years. Its extreme, I know.

I've found that if stored correctly, they can come back to life very
nicely. Whats important is that things didn't start to rust, seize, or get
stuck. I also don't bother with cars with higher mileage. A car needs to
be pretty special for one reason or another to warrant this kind of
attention.

My 1967 300SEL was worse than the 450SLC 5.0, but came back just as well.
I also had to do air suspension stuff, free up the injection pump, and
deal with damage from mice. But its a really cool car with 53k documented
miles, well worth the effort. Still loads of work to do on this one.

Not when the battery voltage is fluctuating with the engine off. I
trust Jim Cathey's analysis. He deals with moving electrons around
every day. TO remove any doubt, with the engine off, take off the
ground terminal and measure battery voltage across the terminals. If
you get the same thing, take the battery back.

There still could be an issue with diodes (replace alt.) or brushes.

Re: [MBZ] OT shoes and repair

2013-01-04 Thread OK Don
My wife wore a pair of LL Bean made in Italy hiking boots after she broke
an ankle - they were the only shoe/boot that eliminated pain. SHe wore them
as her every-day shoes with the exception of special dress-up events (few
and far between for us) for six or seven years. Finally the uppers started
seperating from the soles, so she bought another pair. She loves them. I
don't wear mine that often as we haven't hiked in the mountains that much
recently (hopefully that will change soon), but I expect that they will
last the rest of my life. However, they do require some break-in, they are
quite stiff at first.

Last year I bought a pair of Made in Italy hiking boots at LL Bean.
They're not bad but they're serious hiking boots not the tall sneakers I
usually wear. They're taking FOREVER to break in and they're heavy but have
excellent support and are warm when needed and cool when not. Expensive but
if they last several years they'll be worth it.

IIRC, the 240D had the 55A alternator - why waste power pushing electrons
around that you don't need? The cars with more electrical accesories got
larger capacity alternators. They won't hurt, but it's unlikely that you
need any more than 55A.

Not when the battery voltage is fluctuating with the engine off. I trust
Jim Cathey's analysis. He deals with moving electrons around every day.
TO remove any doubt, with the engine off, take off the ground terminal
and measure battery voltage across the terminals. If you get the same
 thing, take the battery back.

There still could be an issue with diodes (replace alt.) or brushes.

2013-01-04 Thread Dieselhead
You don't hurt anything using a larger alternator. I'd go for the 65
or larger. 55 was probably changed to 65 with the MBNA insistence
that US model 240Ds were luxury cars and had to have electric
winders, sunroof and every other thing they could think of to hang on
the US models.

I'd go for the 65 or larger. (assuming equal price)

IIRC, the 240D had the 55A alternator - why waste power pushing electrons
around that you don't need? The cars with more electrical accesories got
larger capacity alternators. They won't hurt, but it's unlikely that you
need any more than 55A.

If it truly was lightly, probably not. It doesn't take much of a tap

I can attest to that.

Froggy hacked a loogie a few months ago. No start issue that seems to indicate
fuel problems. I swapped out a fuel filter and it ran. Once. Decided it was
getting cold, so park it until spring. Got a bug after new years, so called
the shop. Tow truck drug it a few miles and off they went.

Hey, I got a nice summer of driving out of her.

Fuel pump failed. Unobtanium
Use a newer series pump and kludge a damper, filter, pump set up that requires
welding and parts from the Fatherland. I inquire if the pump could be rebuilt.
Indy looks at me like I just pooped in his tool drawer. Why would I want
obsolete tech and have to find the part again when I can use the newer type?
Ok.

Still runs like crap. Find out there are molecular depth left to the points
and contacts. Shot after 38 years. Put new ones in and adjust. Still not
running like he wants. So he looks at the plugs. Yeah, I messed up the
install and one was barely three rotations in. Fresh plugs.

That was a fix, but not the one he wanted to solve, so out comes the
stethoscope. Number three is having a strange tick. Messed up exhaust gasket?
Head gasket leaking? Hard to tell. But that does not prove to be the
trouble. Start removing plug wires. Hard to tell but looks like number six is
not firing or something is off. Pokes around and looks like injector is the
problem. Test the lead and it shows power and it is performing. Must be the
injector itself. Points out at least one injector has been replaced with
newer. SO I have been running on 7 pistons. All spring and summer. Probably
been like that for years. FECES!

Do the standard web search for just what is supposed to be a replacement part.
Then try to source said part. New, these things are up to $230 from around
$150 a few years ago. Curses! Hit fleabay. yeah, they know what these things
are worth. Offer of new are same as retail, and that is opening bid. Found a
guy in Kalifornia who parted an early M117 and put 7 injectors up. Sold five,
wants $75 each. I make an offer and get the last two for $100 both. Shipped
and should arrive in time for installation when the German parts come in.

But why does my indy still look at me like I am a complete idiot and I piss him
off that I have an old car?
