Re: [MBZ] poos detailing
Look into the Griots stuff. HF has a workable 6 RA sander/buffer that I just picked up. I used the 25% off coupon. Original price was $60. Pick up the velcro pads at HF too. A little less expensive than Griot, but probably the same things. The SE had a kacked up hood. Pine sap had eaten the clear away and into the color. The hood looked like a giant had sneezed on it and the boogers cooked on. Felt like it too. I used a razor to shave the crap off, just to be able to get a sort of smooth surface to start with. That was not good enough. Chemicals like isopropyl or other mild solvents did not reduce the cratering either. Then I used the targeted nuclear option. I got wet/dry sandpaper. I worked up from 1500 to 5000 grit and turned the hood into an opaque disaster. That done, I washed it up and the wet made it look pretty good. So, I got out the Griot #1 polish and put that on it with the RA. Then worked up to #3 polish, followed by the sealant. It went from heavy damage to very shiny black paint. The pitting is still noticeable, but that is just white spots from paint damage. The surface is smooth as an infants posterior. The owner will eventually have to do a repaint, but for now, the car looks good enough. clay 2002 s430 - Victor, a Stately well tailored chap 1974 450sl - Frosch - Two tone green 1972 220D - Gump - She was green, simple and ran 1995 E300D - Gave her life to save me against a Dame in a SUV POS 1987 SDL - Beware Nigerian Scammers On Sep 15, 2013, at 1:47 PM, Kaleb C. I have been meaning to buff it out for a long time but have never got around to it. Today I washed the car and messed with buffing it. I just used what I had on hand and it did not work all that well. I had some turtle wax polishing compound in a quirt bottle and my 9 random orbital buffer. I buffed on it quite a while and ended up really scrubbing on it by hand in one corner and could tell it was starting to shine up but was going to take many hours and lots of manual scrubbing to get it off. So I gave up till I could get some proper equipment, probably a Harbor Freight regular buffer and something other that Turtle wax. Poos you use a buffer? I do NOT want to do it by hand, I am way too lazy and hate detailing cars. You use 3m products, right? What do you recommend to cut down really bad oxidation, followed with a nice wax that will last a long time. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

The water was crystal clear and did not get above about 34°F in summer. Whenever I'd stop by for a visit with the water plant technician, I could look down into the intake well inside the building built over the lake and see nice fish several feet beneath the surface. Usually, the only treatment to the water was to heat it to 56°F before and during the pumping process via an above-ground pipeline to a pump building with a huge holding tank near the center of the main base. There it was checked regularly (the frequency and type of checks I don't remember) and treated as necessary with addition of chlorine in accordance with federal standards. The Danish water plant manager told me that he seldom ever had to add chlorine. Most of this water is ice melt from the Greenland ice cap and Russell Glacier where it has been frozen for thousands of years and is probably one of the best and purest water supplies in the world. The cold water at the faucets around base was so cold that I always had to add some hot water to keep the cold water from hurting my hands. Summer recreational activities at the lake worried me somewhat, though. A rowing club was active at the lake, and occasionally a rower would briefly go into the water. On July 4th, a traditional Danish-American Day celebration was also held at the lake and the Rowing Club house. In addition to the usual July 4th fair of hot dogs, hamburgers, beer, soft drinks, etc., a large part of the traditional celebration was a football game of sorts between the Danish civilian women and the American men. Check the link: http://sondrestrom.com/folks.html. Tradition also required that anybody who had not been thrown into the lake was going into the lake before day's end. Yes, I went into the lake, and I can definitely attest: its temperature does not get above about 34°F, but I never heard that our domestic water supply needed any additional treatment because of my dunking. Re: [MBZ] OT watering deep
The main part of the house was built in 1981. It sits on a full basement with footings and a poured concrete wall on top of the footings. The house has not moved all that much. The addition built in 1987 is the issue. It sits on piles - mostly bell piles and a couple of straight piles that go a bit deeper due to water infiltration when the piles were being drilled and poured. They are the ones closest to the original foundation. The outer edge of the addition has settled. It did not move much for a long while but it has given us a bit of grief over the years. We have a big maple tree about 10 feet from the house on the front corner. I assume it pulls a lot of water out of the ground and that may be one of the issues. I am reluctant to remove it because I like trees and it provides a lot of shade to the house. We have often found in August that the front door begins to rub. Putting the hose out and running a lot of water has usually resolved the minimal rubbing on the door. However, we have had somewhat drier conditions in the past few years and the result is that watering has not helped this past year or two. The soil has dropped away from the front curb and there is a good 6 inches of concrete exposed at the street. I would guess that my whole yard has dropped about 6 inches. More of the foundation at the house is exposed as well. Running the water on the meter is relatively expensive but we have been watering. I am curious as to whether there is any hope of the soil swelling enough to raise us back up a bit. I would be reluctant to spend the money necessary to level the house and then have it go the other way and rise above where it belongs. The one good thing about the addition is that it could at least in theory be raised relatively easily in my opinion. There is a crawl space and the joists are not inbedded in the concrete. There are bolts holding it down. The bolts could be loosened off and one could put together a laminated beam in the crawl space and then shore it up with cribbing and lift with jacks. One would need to do so slowly in order to avoid damaging the house but it could be done over time. The stucco and sheathing on the exterior would need to be cut to permit the building to be lifted from the grade beam. Then one would need to fill the gap and repair the sheathing. I think that I would cut an opening in the floor in the den so that the crawl space would be more accessible but that would just mean replacing the floor in the den later. It would be a major pain but it could be done. I would need to consult an engineer to see if that was a good idea or if my fears of the house lifting again in a wet period might have an legitimacy. The addition is 10 feet wide and 30 feet long and 2 storeys high. There is no plumbing or significant electrical in it etc. The lower part consists of the front entry, the back entry hall, a pantry cupboard and the den in the middle. The upper level is a 4th bedroom and a small sitting room that my wife uses to watch tv. So no bathrooms, kitchens etc in that part of the house and no main electric panel etc. The AC sits on a concrete extension to the porch at the rear of the house and the lines for it run through the crawl space into the basement itself to the furnace. The only other mechanical installations are the drier vent pipe that runs accross between the joists and a cold air intake pipe that feeds into basement to provide combustion air to the furnace. So, as I said doable but a pain and it would be messy. Randy On 14/09/2013 4:59 PM, clay wrote: This seems to have been a problem for the drought struck midwest the past few years. The ground just dried out and houses start to get wonky. I read something about how ungood it was, but since there was no water to spare, no good solution. That said, I would expect you to be able to either soak your foundation area about three foot out on a regular (weekly?) basis which would keep the soil there moist enough. Water normally travels down, not out. It takes time for the moisture to travel, and it dries from the top down as well. If you have soaker hoses around the foundation, you probably can run them for a few hours each week and the deeper soil will not dry out. The new water will travel a few inches an hour, and if you do evening or overnight watering, the moisture will get about two or three feed down by morning. That would require a very large expenditure of water to do. Best to just keep on it each week, so the need for deep watering is not needed. clay On Sep 13, 2013, at 11:17 AM, Randy Bennell wrote: Some of you may recall my query a year or two ago about what I might do about too much moisture in my garage. Who said I should renew the fuses? Well it didn't help but its one more thing I know isn't causing my problem. To review: No horn, headlights, highbeams, daytime running lamps, wipers or washer. Today I replaced all the fuses and proved that the load reduction relay (LRR) isn't the problem. The LRR shuts off all of the above (plus the heater fan which strangely works) when you start the car. Its a dead simple relay, power in switches a hot lead. I pulled the relay and bench tested it, it clicks and does its job. To prove it didn't have burned contacts that would provide continuity but not pass current I jumpered the connection the relay makes which turns on the blower (as it should) but nothing else. Clearly my problem is someplace else. Next game is to start dressing cables behind the fusebox, its a bit of a rats nest. I need to find the main fusebox ground and reground it, see if that helps. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I have fond memories of visiting my great aunt and uncle and hearing about days gone by from the 1930s-1940s. One of the most humorous things as a youngster was when I saw a picture of them before they had white hair. I had never thought about it before because their hair had turned white before I was born. I think for some the war days would be things they may not wish to recall so not asking does not seem like a big deal. Neither of my grandfathers ever talked about it. Re: [MBZ] The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTEC is here!
Well, there are good dealers bad dealers (and good bad service/parts departments). Re-reading Kaleb's post, a chat with the adviser regarding previous service history, prior to handing over the keys may have prevented the up-selling improved his experience. Everyone knows those Airmatic shocks are $$$ (just by themselves) to have replaced at the dealer, no surprise there. If you can afford it, I don't see why a new Mercedes diesel should not be considered enjoyed. [MBZ] Trunk Triangle
Got a triangle from someone on Benzworld last week but they didn't have the W140 clip. Frank Peele on the Hitler list needed one for his W126, so I sent him the one that came with the triangle. Call it a hunch, but I don't think he'll be thanking me publicly there. Got the W140 clip from my dealer parts guy and got everything installed the other night. Now I have a nice reflective triangle on my trunk lid AND my trunk lid doesn't try and go into orbit when I release it. Nice. Very sad. I believe that this type of occurrence reflects on the poor firearms training NYPD officers receive. My SIL is a NYPD Officer, and I hear his criticisms of the training. He spends his own money and time for additional practice, which I'm sure many won't do. Many years back I happened to be at a range where NYPD was doing their transition training from revolvers to semi-auto pistols. Their reload drill was pathetic. I could easily have reloaded a revolver faster than ANY of the NYPD on the firing line were able to drop an empty mag and replace with a full one! The combination of the lack of training plus a bystander shouting that the alleged perp had a gun led to predictable tragedy. Many folks on the TDI side kept directing me back to the fuse box diagram: http://www.a2resource.com/electrical/CE2.html and today after replacing the fuses I finally took time to look at it and figure out how the diagram worked. I went through charting every ground figuring this problem had all the hallmarks of a bad ground. I'd go out and poke around a little, identify the main ground, check that it was good, come back look again. Finally I noticed that H1, H2 and J seemed to have pins for everything that didn't work so I knew I had to focus in there. Got the box down where I could see it good and wadday know, J is unplugged... It took a lot of prodding to figure out how to get it reconnected, theres a crossbar safety, how it ever got out is a mystery to me... Anyway go it in and immediately knew I'd hit it as the flashers came on when I connected the battery. Horn didn't work but I figured that out quick enough when I could see the electrical connection not touching the steering wheel. Hadta crank the wheel down a couple more turns even though it was already pretty tight. Got all the dash buttoned back up, theres one steering cover that had a broken screw post that I'm still working on, I'd fixed it but hadn't investigated how the thing went back together. Need to fix it more better-er. Anyway just need to replace the coolant distribution pipe and tighten up the parking brake. Get the plates moved over from the 240D and we're ready to rock. LAKE FERGUSON By Wilton Strickland Our water reservoir at Sondrestrom was Lake Ferguson, a rectangular-shaped lake visible on Google Earth about a mile and a half across the Watson River and south of the base. At least I know what to look for. I was able to secure the wires so they are well away from the moving parts, so I doubt the existing harness will be similarly affected. I would add that when I disassembled the clutch I found the remains of a very small tie wrap, which was broken. I suspect this failed and allowed the wires to move around and contact the pulley, wearing through the wires. I wish. It is engineered in to the door latch mechanism and associated wiring harness. There is some really funky linkage it interacts with in order to tell the closing assist system when the door is ajar. I have been a controls guy for many decades, and my area of expertise was in electromechanical controls, so I know microswitches. If there was a way I could use a stock or generic microswitch, believe me, I would. That's why I'm looking for a left hand door latch assembly from a W140. They all used the same microswitch. Just doing a cursory search shows that complete door latch assemblies are going for between $40 and $70 used in places like FleaBay and other online venues. Re: [MBZ] I guess since poos is too busy...
I have just been slammed at both work and home the last few days, which has precluded me from any lengthy responses to your questions. Before I pass out for the night, I'll tell you what I think: You need both a polisher and a random orbital buffer. Harbor Freight stuff works fine for me and has served me well so far. dumping several hundred $$ into these tools that you might use a few times a year is a big waste in my opinion. You also need a collection of pads and bonnets depending on the materials you choose and a spur for cleaning pads. You'll spend between $150-$200 on compounds and chemical, however, you should have plenty left for future sessions, so the costs will be spread out over a number of vehicles. You saw the highly oxidized finish on the S500, and the results I got after probably 20 hours of work. If you're willing to dig into the finish on your car, that's the sort of results that you can expect - BUT - you can't cut corners, half-ass it, or skip steps. So let's start after you have wiped the finish down with some clean towels and IPA cut 50-50 with distilled water: Step 1.) Ardex 1000 Plus applied using 1-1/2 wool pad on a 7 polisher. As with any detailing work, start from the top and work down. I like to divide the panels in halves and make sure I overlap. Work in areas no larger than 2 x 2. Use plenty of pressure and lighten up as the Ardex flashes off. When you're done with a panel wipe it down using a clean towel and IPA. Step 2.) Harbor Freight stuff works fine for me and has served me well so far. dumping several hundred $$ into these tools that you might use a few times a year is a big waste in my opinion. Step 2.) Ardex 1500 Plus applied using a Meguire's maroon wool pad and the same 7 polisher. Use the same approach as Step 1. You should see the haze start to disappear at this point. Step 3.) [MBZ] OT: Truck
I've decided I want a pick up truck for basic utility. Carrying stuff around, trips to the home disappointment, etc. And towing around my utility trailer. Overall, it would get used pretty rarely and I'd probably share it with my brother who has the same needs. Looking to spend under $3000. Doesn't have to be pretty, but should a basically reliable design. I don't mind doing some work, of course, to make it reliable. Problem is I don't know where to start looking. That is, what model to look for and what to avoid. Can anyone offer any experience or suggestions? I'd lean toward a Toyota, but I don't think they're very cheap. Theres lots of higher mileage Fords and Dodges out there... A bonus would be something heavy enough to tow a car trailer. Anyone have any advice? Re: [MBZ] HVAC / Mono valve issue. Attn Jim Cathey
There is a 2-pin connector on the mono valve. One pin is always hot (+12v whenever the car is powered up). The other pin is grounded by the ACC system to stop the flow of coolant through the heater core. You can test the mono valve by applying 12v to the one pin and grounding the other pin; that should close the valve. But just measuring the voltage at the connector could be misleading. One lead will read 12v but the other may read zero even if it's just floating (not grounded). -Original Message- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Mike Esh Sent: Monday, September 16, 2013 12:40 PM To: Okie Benz Subject: [MBZ] HVAC / Mono valve issue. Re: [MBZ] OT: Truck
2wd I presume. $3k buys almost nothing in a 4wd truck right now. Forget Toyota, not that long ago there was a late '90s T100 nearby, 4wd, extended cab, not a bad looking truck for the age, some rust but not a ton, 265,000 miles on the original everything, they wanted (and got I later heard) $6800. Thats insane, I can't imagine anything so good about the truck it'd be worth that. Later Toyota (say 2000 to 2009) have horrifying frame rot issues. My wife's uncle was actually told You can't leave here with it one time. Toyota did give him a sweet deal on a new truck but I'd bet you'd need to be the original owner to get that. I'd say you look for the big 3, full size will frighteningly be cheaper than a smaller truck probably. Don't be afraid of a 1ton, often in my experience they're the boss's truck and not beat so bad. In a 2wd a v6 isn't too bad where its pretty slugworthy in a 4wd. -Curt Date: Mon, 16 Sep 2013 21:01:26 -0400 From: Jaime Kopchinski jaime...@gmail.com To: mercedes Mailing List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] OT: Truck Message-ID: cacy-ba+xgrqt+ejwvzufqhseq79d5rgssrdkdn0on+vbqzk...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 I've decided I want a pick up truck for basic utility. Re: [MBZ] Volt Reading Across Battery
I have to ask.. Did you get the alternator from Trent?? OK, fun over... although you have all the info, we have almost none.. why did it get replaced? Do you know the battery is good ( I kinda doubt it, but I'm not there ) . Have you checked the meter or repeated the measurment with another meter? LIke someone said, wired wrong, no output. However it's really tough to wire these wrong since they are self excited and use the only other terminal they have to tell you when it's charging with a bulb on the dash. So what does the bulb say?? Or if your bulb is mute, what does it tell you when you turn on the key.. then start the engine.. ( if you can start it on 10+ volts. Light on, then light off when the engine starts?? I doubt it... but... Most batteries float at 12+. Not much +, a little. A battery at 10+ is an issue. Unless it's being drug down to that level by a stupendous load ( like all the lights on, the glow relay contacts welded, and the starter hung ) then I'd say you got a bad battery. But I don't know..
