Bought a HF buffer and some pads to buff the badly oxidized hood of my 140. Since my $4 gl appears to either have a bad transfer case or bad front diff, I decided to get my 140 cleaned up to start driving. Anyway, I have been buffing on it for hours using turtle wax rubbing compound for mild to heavy oxidation. That is like beating your head against the wall. That crap is hard to get off. At first I think I was using too much, but then I just think the stuff is not worth a crap. It looks much better but still needs further buffing before applying wax. Re: [MBZ] W124 AC Evaporator Leaking
Hi Peter, i have been reviewing the WSM instructions and believe I can remove the old and install a new evap then put everything back together with new pods and valve, then take the car to my AC shop (owned by a ex-coworker SIL) who will then evacuate charge the system for me. My only concern is possible leaks when I reinstall everything - but if I read things correctly, there are no connections inside the dash that may leak. Is that correct? I believe the connectors are on the engine side of the firewall... Am I correct to believe i need to replace /_all _/the vacuum pods? Anything else behind the dash need attention while I'm in there? I am not as gifted as Poos, but did some passable work on a black w140. If it is really as bad as you say, maybe hitting it with 3000 or 4000 grit wet sand would give you a better base. I went from 2000 to 5000 grit, then hit it with a series of finer compounds until the shine was back. Topped it with sealant. I will need to train #1 boy on how to wash his car so he can wax it. clay On Apr 11, 2014, at 4:42 PM, Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] Poosy would not be proud.
Rubbing compound would be the last thing I would use. In fact, I've never used rubbing compound that I can recall. You have to use the right materials with the proper pad. You don't just grab any old pad and compound and have at it. That is a formula for some serious damage. You have to base your choice of material on the condition of the finish. It's not an arbitrary thing. Dan On Apr 11, 2014, at 7:42 PM, Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: Bought a HF buffer and some pads to buff the badly oxidized hood of my 140. If you're using a high speed polisher with a foam pad you'll get nowhere as well. You need a wool pad and the proper material for removing oxidation. This is not the sort of thing you'll find at a FLAPs. You need to find an automotive body/paint supply place. Dan On Apr 11, 2014, at 8:41 PM, Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: Da? Re: [MBZ] W124 AC Evaporator Leaking
Yes, the expansion valve is in the engine compartment. If the new evaporator leaks you have a problem, but otherwise any leaks are in the engine compartment. I would flush the rest of the system and covert it to PAG oil (dump the compressor out and add 120 mL PAG oil), add 2 oz of oil for the now fairly clean condenser, and replace ALL the o-rings. These are the most like sources of leaks and by now are in poor shape. You should consider replacing the short line between the condenser and the receiver/dryer as well as these are the most likely to leak in my experience. And have the shop install a new receiver/dryer immediately prior to charging. Saves all sorts of problems. With a clean condenser and a proper charge the AC will work just fine on R134a -- they came filled with it after 1992 anyway. [MBZ] NSA knew about Heartbeat for past two years. was: Password manager
NSA knew about and used Heartbeat for past two years. NSA denies it. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-04-11/nsa-said-to-have-used-heartbleed-bug-exposing-consumers.html Gerry Archer wrote: While most of the buzz surrounding OpenSSL's Heartbleed vulnerability has focussed on websites and other servers, the SANS Institute reminds us that software running on PCs, tablets and more is just as potentially vulnerable. Tim Crone wrote: Networking equipment, backup applications, video cameras, networked refrigerators, printers, networked storage, digital TVs and boxes that can be remotely managed - anything with an internet connection that can be used remotely. It doesn't have to be a web server, just has to be able to use a relatively recent version of OpenSSL's TLS. (I have read that OpenSSH does not, by the way.) Embedded device programmers tend to adopt libraries very slowly, so many of these oddball devices will be so far out of date that an exploit created in the past two years isn't a serious threat. Of course you might have other known threats that were never patched; bigger companies will have a security team to keep on top of such things, but many hardware companies won't release patches after a relatively short time beyond public ship. If you aren't using a password manager, now is a good time to start, since you really should change every password everywhere over the next few weeks. You won't have any idea if your information has leaked, and I would expect smart attackers will hold back data until the smoke has cleared. I haven't seen any financial coverage, but HB could have leaked credit card details, bank information, social security numbers, and so on. Unfortunately the US banks are in such a state that there's not a great solution for that, as far as I know. Any suggestions? Best, Tim What would you suggest for a password manager? An NYT article mentioned Roboform http://www.roboform.com/,KeePass http://keepass.info/,LastPass https://lastpass.com/,1Password https://agilebits.com/, and so on). NYt recommended Dashlane which they say has been improved. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/06/technology/personaltech/too-many-passwords-and-no-way-to-remember-them-until-now.html?pagewanted=all_r=0 There is a long list of articles, ratings, etc. when searching Bing under password manager, so a professional opinion would be welcome. Re: [MBZ] Gummit corruption
Whooo there partner. ease up a moment... This family has been ranching that same area since before the Civil War. Almost all ranches in the west are part patent land [private title land] and part BLM lease land. To those of the Eastern persuasion this may sound strange.. but to those of us who live in the great west, it is quite normal. Open grazing rights are a long standing tradition for BLM land use. The BLM encourages such arrangements and consumes entire forests to make enough paper to write all the paperwork associated with doing business with a large government agency such as BLM. Much of the land managed by BLM is to poor to ever support development and the average use of grazing cows is measured in cows per square mile [limited by BLM regulations, btw.] and in aggregate something on the order of 2 cows per square mile is average [unlike your green pastures in the East with lots of rain and grass]. Passions are running very high on this particular issue largely because the government agency has used armed thugs who have harmed both people and innocent cows by their direct actions. I urge you to have a close and complete look at the actual status of this families BLM lease, compared with other BLM leases for cattle grazing, before coming out with your six guns blazing. I believe a closer inspection of the events, both historical and current, will give a much different view than what is being reported. It appears to me, from the information I have, the Bundy family has a BLM lease and now BLM has decided [or some other government agency as yet not fully identified] to attempt to break said lease to save a rare tortise which may not need saving.. or if it does may not truly be impacted by 2 cows per square mile grazing [supposed average in the West on BLM land] If there were no lease, why would the government need to break the lease by imposing the rare endangered critter ruse? It does give cause to question, does it not?
