I read in more detail and saw that you think you have OSX 10.8.

If that is is the case, then you should have a recovery volume on the machine.
reboot or start up while holding the Command + R keys down. Don't let up on
it until you see some nard drive icons show up on the screen. These are
volumes that are bootable. Once of them should be the Recovery HD volume.
Choose (click) on it and press Enter.

Re: [MBZ] OT Macbook Pro S/W update kills it

2014-08-23 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

You can boot to single-user mode with Cmd-Opt-S (?), from there you
can poke around disabling things, perhaps.

Boot from a CD with C and something in the drive. That's
the start-over option. If you have an OS install CD/DVD.
Recovery disks are fairly machine-specific. I doubt an
iMac disc is going to be of much use.

Generally the updates are a good idea, and work well enough.
Disclaimer: our newest OS is 10.6 on a MBP. SWMBA hates it.
I've gotta say, it's no Pismo.

[MBZ] 1and! Hosting

2014-08-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just a postscript to my experience with 1and1

I continued to get spam alerts from Verizon over email originating from 1and1
servers until the very end. This was after almost four weeks from their
promises that it would end.

Also, I hosted six domains with them. I received confirmations of the domain
transfers last Sunday when I initiated them. They all showed that my domains
would transfer by 13:00 local time yesterday. Three of them transferred around
17:00, the other three didn't go until almost midnight. I called them around
19L00 and asked why the others hadn't transferred yet and they just gave me the
runaround. When I asked them if their email confirmation was wrong, they
wouldn't respond.

Now that everything is moved over and working I'm pulling the plug on 1and1.
Should be interesting, as I've heard their retention people are pretty
ruthless, almost as bad as Comcast.

I tried almost everything and couldn't get past spinning wheels. Right
now it appears to be doing an Internet Recovery cmd-alt-R on startup
which worked to get some response, I had to plug it into the router as

be downloading something (has a spinning globe and looks like a download
bar that is not moving), I'll see what it does, if this doesn't work
I'll probably have to take it into Apple store and see if they will

The problem appears to be an upgrade from OSX 10.8.4 to 10.8.5 which

to do last night so I let it, with the GSOD then appearing. It is now
saying 3:57 which means at some point this afternoon something might
work. I'm not sure exactly what it is downloading, what version of OSX
but I guess I might see in 4 hours.

My wife had pretty much cleaned everything off as she was going to sell
it but couldn't get much for it so it sat since like Nov or Dec (I did
not know this). So now I get to try to resurrect it after it tried to
upgrade itself.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Kubota tractors tier 4 was 1984 500SEL Surrender

2014-08-23 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
The supply of recent older tractors is limited. During the recession
hobby tractor sales dropped dramatically and quite a few smaller dealers
went out of business (or quit selling tractors).

I can't comment on any common rail injection systems but the all-mechanical
injection systems will be very familiar to any MBZ Diesel owner. The main
difference is that the injection cam is in the block, not in a separate IP.
This actually makes IP replacement easy because injection timing is set by
shims between the IP and the block. The IP rack is positioned by spring
force (more fuel) balanced against a centrifugal retarding force. There is
a pre-chamber with glow plugs. All very much like a 617, but simpler.

I think Euros were all H4 bulbs, only the DOT headlamps were not.
That said, people in other parts of the world used to buy US DOT

H4 is plug compatible with 7 or 6x8 (or the low beam lamp in 5 3/4 or 4x6)
sealed beam.
H1 is compatible with 5 3/4 or 4x6 high beams (for the W108,109, 116 and 107
owners) I assume H1 can replace the W123 fog lights, but can't guarantee it.

I had a minor problem with my Plymouth Horizon, the rubber cover over the back
of the H4 bulb on my Hellas was larger than the hole in the back of my headlamp
frame, so I had to dremel the heck out of the buckets to get the Hella lamps in.

The Chevy Citation I had before it didn't have that problem.

If you go oversized on the bulbs, try to find some 55/100w bulbs so that low
beam isn't offensive to others. (but with all the HID stuff of varying qualities
out there, I'm not sure that nasty low beams stand out in the crowd that much
any more)

Re: [MBZ] OT Macbook Pro S/W update kills it

2014-08-23 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
After doing an Internet Recovery and that not working, then rebooting
several times to try to get to the install where it would actually see
my hard drive, I was able to do that after doing Disk Verify and Restore
a couple of times on the main HD and the recovery? drive. Tried to
install the Lion then, says it is unavailable, which the tubes say is
the next common problem. Anyway, after doing the verify and restore, I
decided to reboot and OH FRABJOUS DAY! it booted right up. Then it told
me that I had some software updates available, one was 10.9 and another
was to upgrade 10.8.4, which is I think what caused the problems last
night. 5.32GB ugh.

So I am now downloading the 10.9 upgrade, will see if that works now. I
declined the 10.8.5 and some other app updates, so maybe this will get
it functioning again. I logged in with my AppleID, I hope that doesn't
bugger things up if my wife's ID is still associated with this machine.
I guess I'll see.

It looks like that 10.8.5 upgrade software buggered the hard drive files
or something. Applecrap software there.

Unfortunately, some security upgrades can cause serious issued on
older (more than two years older than the OS) machines.

Crappy support from Apple -- they really only want you to use a device
for a year or two and buy another one, in spite of the fact that
usually their hardware is very robust -- I'm using a MDD G4 dual
1.25GHz desktop to write this with zero issues once I got good memory
in it.

The root issue is bad security development in the first place, and
since it's Unix, that goes back a long, long way. No excuse,
especially at the price point, but it is what it is.

Microsoft is STILL trying to kill off XP, after all. Sadly, it was by

I do abhor the new Office package. Some idiot decided that all the

This is why I keep a bootable disk around -- you can make a full copy
of the OS onto a DVD or external drive using Disk Utility or Carbon
Copy Cloner, and that way you can always at least boot the stinking
thing and get on line.

Do you have another Mac around and a Firewire cable? You should be
able to boot the laptop into disk mode and connect it to another
computer, thus allowing you to run disk utility and possibly transfer
a working copy of the OS.

Re: [MBZ] trailer hitches

2014-08-23 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I inquired a while ago I think...

The consensus is that the hitch sold for the 300TD is a great hitch, but
interferes with with exhaust pipe on a sedan. The work around is to
install a 300TD muffler on your sedan.

Otherwise, you get a bumper hitch from Curt. The kind that bolts to the
spare tire well and bumper. I have installed one of these thing spring and
I'm pretty happy with it for light use. I pulled my utility trailer with
lighter loads (1000lbs total) and a log splitter so far. No complains.

However, I'm going to remove it and sell the car I think, since I just
acquired a W126 300SD that better suits my needs (which involves leave the
car parked in a lot for weeks at a time). So I'll remove the hitch and get
one for the W126... I think one is available that looks pretty good.

Re: [MBZ] OT Macbook Pro S/W update kills it

2014-08-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
When you're making that big of a jump between revs it's almost always best to
do the delta updates rather then the combo or full updates. The combo
updates are what they would be downloading to your machine from the App Store.
You have to go to the OSX support Web site for each rev and download each of
the delta updates individually.

From that big of a jump I would probably try to do a clean install with the
latest supported OSX rev, Trying to update over 3-4 revs is going to be
problematic at best.

This is not an Apple issue - it would be like trying to jump from the original
XP version to SP4 in one step. That big of a gap and stuff is going to break.

Speaking of starting reminds me: Coupla weeks ago, I had just made one

working on outside of the house pulled up to curb after lunch. I cut
 the
mower off to talk to the painters. Couple minutes later, when I tried
 to

 mower
and me to within jumper cable distance of the battery in the '87 300D.
Mower still only groaned with jumper cables attached. SWMBO pushed
mower and me to the mower's parking place.

Rain, heat, humidity, skeeters, procrastination and most anything kept
 me
from tackling the mower problem until this morning. Meanwhile, #1 son
came and cut grass once and I thought occasionally about how the
 family's
'37 Ford suddenly would not start one weekend in 1948 when I was 14 and
had taken the car on extended spins around and around the house many
times while my two brothers, who were the family drivers and in charge
  of
the car were on a weekend trip with a third brother. While I worried
 that
  my
brothers would accuse me of breaking the car, early Sunday afternoon a
cousin about the age of one of my driver brothers stopped by for a
  visit.

The cousin asked me why the car was sitting in a strange position in the
  yard.
I told 'im I'd been driving it, and it would not start on Saturday
  afternoon
after I had taken a lunch break from my self-taught driving lessons. He
  got a
wrench, opened the hood ad asked me to Try it now while he tightened
 the
battery cables a bit. That's when I learned about loose and/or corroded
  battery cables.

Shonuff, 'removed the mower battery cables, cleaned the cable ends and
 the
battery terminals, reattached the cables and mower starts right up.

Many owners never (almost) remove the loader. With larger tractors, humans
aren't strong enough to brute-force them back into position. The trick is
to park on a very flat (preferably level) surface before removing the

bucket; I can remove and install the bucket with ease so I've never had to
remove the actual loader. I have a DK45S but on several occasions while
working in the woods I wished for a smaller, more maneuverable tractor.
Those 20-30 hp models tend to be real workhorses. Land Pride has a great
reputation. I have found that many times the exact same attachment is
painted different colors and marketed under several brand names. For
example, my Deere box blade was made by Woods and my Phoenix finish mower

Thanks Scott...

Level surface is big, and something I don't have where I store my
attachments! I take off the loader for mowing. I learned (the hard way)
that its really easy to destroy things like fence posts when you're
maneuvering around in tight spaces! My bucket comes off the loader frame
too... maybe I should go that route occasionally. I only remove it once to
test fit the snow plow.

The guys at Land Pride are great. Before I bought everything I gave them a
call to ask about what size attachment would be best for my tractor. I was
really impressed by the knowledge of the guy I ended up talking to. We
were on the phone for half an hour. Definitely a company that knows its
business, its products, and its customers.

example, my Deere box blade was made by Woods and my Phoenix finish mower

I bought a BX2370 new this spring. Its really outstanding. Simple three
cylinder diesel with mechanical injection pump. I have 25 hours on it
 now
and have done a good amount of work with it. The heavy stuff was moving
dirt and rock around the yard, and cleaning up 2000ft of gravel driveway.

My only complaint is that its a real PITA to get the deck and loader on
 and
off. With some practice, it gets easier. And with a big pry bar.

I bought a 60 land pride grader scraper too. It does a great job on the
driveway, and takes an impressive amount of power to pull it. I have to
 step
on the diff lock occasionally when it gets loaded up and the road is
 soft.

Re: [MBZ] OT An eventful morning

2014-08-23 Thread clay via Mercedes
That did happen on the 300SE. Today #1 boy drags me out to the car to show me
the coolant mess near the overflow tank. Having not seen it before, I thought
it was his head gasket. The spew was not at all as dramatic as he portrayed.
Seemed to come from the overflow hose from the rad. Closer look shows a micro
crack. Hot fluid was escaping, but not horrid. No shoe goo, so I drug out the
spare tank and had him clean it out and install.

All good now

leaking, figuring at 200k miles the head gasket might be going bad.) Temp
not excessive. Get to pick her up and it dies. I get it going again, we
get about a half mile down the road, dead no go. I am poking around trying
to figure out the problem, I see one plastic press-on heater hose fitting
broken at the firewall. That'll do it. So then I am fooling with that and
the other one next to it snaps off too. Yay. Looks like there is a valve
that controls coolant flow, down at the engine, but started it and it ran a
few seconds, coolant puking out the hose so no way to drive it even if it
 started and ran.

So fortunately she has AAA so we call for a tow. Flatbed shows up in like
45min. brings everything home. I am looking up this problem on the
intertubes, and see it is a common problem. That's comforting, at least
the parts are cheap enough. Was planning to do the 200k service and change
all hoses and belts and fluids and such when it cooled down a bit, looks
like at least that part will be done sooner. I am hoping that some other
problem of a more significant nature did not manifest due to low coolant.
I'll probably just bypass the heater for now until I can get parts, see if
the thing will start and run after it cools down more. Plus it is in the
90s today, so that will take awhile.

Mower still only groaned with jumper cables attached. SWMBO pushed
mower and me to the mower's parking place.

Rain, heat, humidity, skeeters, procrastination and most anything kept me
from tackling the mower problem until this morning. Meanwhile, #1 son
came and cut grass once and I thought occasionally about how the family's
'37 Ford suddenly would not start one weekend in 1948 when I was 14 and
had taken the car on extended spins around and around the house many
times while my two brothers, who were the family drivers and in charge

the car were on a weekend trip with a third brother. While I worried that
  my
brothers would accuse me of breaking the car, early Sunday afternoon a
cousin about the age of one of my driver brothers stopped by for a

The cousin asked me why the car was sitting in a strange position in the

Two years ago, when I bought the 1999 wagon, you could still get a case of Shell
