I would guess it has hoses at the tank. If hoses under the hood look
good and the clamps are tight, then the suction side tank hose may be
the culprit. (Likely)

 would assume it does.

[MBZ] OT - A CAROLINA COUNTRY BOY; JAKE BACHELOR FARM

2015-03-24 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

Yep, here's another one:

JAKE BACHELOR FARM
By Wilton Strickland

In January 1945, we moved to the Jake Bachelor farm on a dirt road a
mile and a half from the small town of Nashville, NC. I was very happy to
be reunited there with school friends I had left a year earlier. We would
graduate from high school together in '52.
My oldest brother, Richard, his wife and their five-year-old son,
George Richard, lived in a small house near us on this farm to fill a gap in
the family's work force caused by Carson's entry into the Army in October
'44.
During the summer, I helped my brother, W. B., build a shower in an
enclosed shelter attached to one of the outbuildings. (None of the
farmhouses we lived in had a bathroom or any indoor plumbing.) We put a
galvanized metal washtub up on top of the shelter to hold water for our
showers. We filled the tub bucket-by-bucket, then let the water sit in the
sun for several hours to be heated. We simply laid a couple of boards on
the dirt floor in the shelter to serve as the shower floor. A gallon Karo
syrup can with nail holes in the bottom of it and mounted over a hole in the
roof served as our shower-head. I would go up on the roof and, using
another syrup bucket, pour water into the shower-head for W. B.'s shower,
and he would pour for me. We were the only farm boys for miles around
getting a hot daily shower. We enjoyed them immensely!
Joyce and I would occasionally walk the short distance into town for a
Saturday afternoon movie whenever we were lucky enough to have a dime each
to splurge on the admission fee. We were movin' on up, and I began to
decide that I was going to do well in school and try to become somebody.
As usual, I was the trucker during tobacco harvest season. One of the
mules I had to manage was almost always somewhat ornery - 'probably didn't
like taking instructions and orders from a little boy. Near lunch time one
day, immediately after I had hitched the mule to an empty truck at the
barns, the mule suddenly took off. I was between the back legs of the mule
and the front of the truck and was almost run over by the truck. I quickly
jumped out of the way, and as the truck came past me, I jumped up on the
back of it, trying to stay with the mule and control him. He would have
none of that, though, and took off in a full gallop toward his stable. En
route he pulled the truck across a large tree root, causing the truck to
bounce high in the air and throw me off. I landed hard on the ground on my
tailbone. The blow hurt terribly, and I could not get up or walk for
several minutes. I finally hobbled to the stables, where I found the mule
calmly getting a drink of water. I let him finish drinking, then we
proceeded to the field for the last load before lunch.
In April we heard on the radio that President Roosevelt had died - a
sad time for all of us. We also heard on the radio in May that the war in
Europe had ended and in August that the Japanese had surrendered, and World
War II had ended. W. B., Joyce and I were so overcome with joy, we jumped
in the car and went barreling up and down the road blowing the horn and
shouting out the windows. I'm amazed we didn't crash uncontrollably. We
were extremely happy that the carnage had ended and that our three brothers
and two of our uncles, Mama's brothers, had survived and would soon return
home.
Often, at the end of tobacco harvesting season, Daddy would barbecue a
pig. He would dig a shallow hole in the ground near the tobacco curing
barns, lay a piece of heavy fence wire and iron rods over the hole to
support the pig halves and use hot, hardwood coals from the barn furnaces to
slowly cook the pig all night, dousing it often with his homemade sauce of
vinegar, hot peppers and other spices.
Daddy sometimes cooked a pot of Brunswick stew on the fire with the
pig also. This is a delicious, thick soup containing most types of
vegetables found on the farm plus small pieces of beef, pork and/or chicken
as available. I'm sure some makers of the stew have also included deer,
'coon, 'possum, turtle, rabbit and squirrel when available. (Even some
local dogs and cats have been jokingly rumored to have been missing after
Brunswick stew has been made on the farm.)
Meanwhile, Mama cooked cornbread sticks, made potato salad, slaw, iced
tea, etc., to make the celebration feast complete. This is probably how
pig pickins and eastern North Carolinians' love of barbecue and Brunswick
stew started -- in celebration of completing the tobacco harvest.

I am going to sell my current 7 series. I have a feeling it might take a
while. Not that many folks are interested in a 15 year old BMW with 217,000
miles.

As far as pictures, sure I can send some. They are the pictures from the
seller's listing. I'm hoping when it gets here that I will have a weekend to
do some Martha Stewart detailing.

Congrats, Donald, glad you found something you like. Sounds like a nice
example. So what are you doing with your existing 740?

As I opined earlier today, I think part of my problem is my past luck in
finding nice, well kept examples cheap. As I expand my search I'm finding that
the decent ones are north of $5,000, more than I had been previously
considering. Looks like it's time to open the wallet and accept that the ones
I have were anomalies due to luck or circumstance.

There are two what appear to be nice prospects I'll be looking at this weekend.
Maybe I'll get lucky as well. If not, I'm sure the right car will eventually
come my way.

Pictures?

searches yielded pretty much nothing. I'm still at a loss to figure out why
W140s are so hard to find...

I feel your pain! I have been on the search for either a 97-99 S Class (just
like you) or another 7 series BMW.I did finally strike gold! Yesterday
 I bought a 2001 BMW 740iL with 115,000 miles -- 2 owner. The first had it for
8 years and the second for 6 years. The seller has only put on 25,000 in the
last 6 years. During that time he also had the 100,000 mile service done at
the BMW dealer and they did EVERYTHING. Poor guy.

Anyway, I am having to have it shipped from Nashville to Wichita in an
enclosed trailer. I am excited because it has such low miles (compared to
my previous cars). My current BMW has 217,000 miles.

Does this car have hoses at the tank like 124 and earlier? If so, replace
the tank hoses, and then work your way along the lines replacing all rubber
parts until you cure it. Suction and return lines. I have taken to
replacing all the flexible sections. After that, it it leaks, you have to
start looking at the steel lines.
I just had to replace a section of steel line in the 126 heap. Steel lines
generally rust through at the clamps to the body.

Re: [MBZ] Ted Cruz?

Somewhere, in the last 239 years, we as a country shifted from being a
Constitutional Republic to acting like a Democracy.

The best description of a Democracy I've heard is: Two wolves and One sheep
voting on what to eat for dinner.

The best description of a Republic I've heard is: One well armed sheep
inviting the Two wolves to eat all the grass they want for dinner.

Somehow, along the way our elected representatives stop asking the question
What is best for America and started asking only the question What can I
do to get re-elected. Regardless of the political party, the current lot
in office have failed to do the job they were elected to do and the
Citizens, regardless of party, are, for the most part, aware of that
failure.

If we are lucky, we can fix it at the ballot box. If we are not lucky, it
will come to the fox hole.

If the ship of state were an airliner, it would be off course and entering
an uncontrolled decent. Immediate corrective action would be required, if
we wanted to live.

Respectfully,

Grant...

Re: [MBZ] OT Another Airbus bores in

Rich Thomas via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote:

Fluging along at cruise, starts a steep descent and bores in, no

 --R

Aviation experts are focusing on the possibility that key sensors on the
Germanwings Airbus A320 could have iced up, causing the aircraft to descend
rapidly.

Oher theories being advanced in the immediate aftermath of the crash was that
the crew could have been incapacitated by a sudden loss of pressure.

Even though it will take some time to determine exactly what caused the Airbus
to crash, there appear to be parallels with an incident involving an Airbus
A321, operated by Lufthansa last November.

It led to the European Aviation Safety Agency issuing an emergency directive
setting out what should be done should the “angle of attack” sensors freeze.

In that case the aircraft dropped 1,000 metres a minute with the crew only
regaining control of the aircraft when they turned off the onboard computers.

In 2012, Airbus began replacing icing-prevention devices on nearly 700 jets
because regulators found they may actually increase ice buildip on the
angle-of-attack sensors.

Bob Mann, an American aviation consultant, highlighted the angle of attack
sensors used on the A320.

“If it thinks a plane is about to stall, it will cause the nose to pitch down,”
he said. “From the flight radar it looks like a nine minute descent at a
constant 400 knots.”

The steady path of the plane could indicate that its path was being controlled
by computer.

This could also indicate that the crew had lost consciousness, said Nick
Brough, an aviation consultant based in Italy.

“The aircraft appears to have gone into a decent lasting eight minutes, at a
more or less constant velocity, until hitting terrain.

“Without intending to speculate, if it is true that the crew made no attempts
to make radio contact, they may have been suddenly incapacitated.

“At this stage oxygen starvation cannot be ruled out, as in the Helios Airways
accident near Athens in 2005.”

“Without oxygen, you lose consciousness very quickly – hence the on board
safety announcement that tells you to put the mask on your own face first and
only then on babies and children.”

James Healy-Pratt a London-based aviation lawyer and qualified pilot believed
both theories could be valid.

The freezing up of the sensors, causing the plane to drop suddenly remains a
“compelling theory” for the AirAsia crash over the Java Sea just after
Christmas, which also involved an Airbus A320, he said.

But in the latest accident there possibility of the crew having been rendered
unconscious also had to be considered.

“Crew incapacitation cannot be ruled out, and there has been speculation over
the possibility of an explosive decompression at altitude,” he said.

“This could possibly be linked to the age of the aircraft.”
(It was one of the oldest A320s still in service.)

As George Washington pointed out, we shouldn't have parties because
we can already see what happens when we do.

People tend to divide themselves based on the parties, rather than
based on the issues. Many aren't actually listening to what is being
said, they are too busy trying to push everyone into a particular
little square on the ballot.

We can't get anywhere because people (including the politicians
themselves) are too busy naming the other side as their enemy to
actually get things done. They're playing politics like it's a game,
one that they have to win, and not actually thinking about the
reality or consequences of their actions.

As a pilot, and for many years flying for business, I personally have a
rule that I will not fly on Airbus aircraft.

The design is fly by wire and the response from pilot input is convoluted
by the pilot [s] having to fly the computer first to have positive
control of the airframe.

As a pilot, I always fly the airplane I'm in, regardless that I'm in a
passenger seat. The Airbus aircraft, in my opinion, lack that fine edge
that only comes when the pilots have positive control of the aircraft.

So, I refuse them. Personal choice.

On the issue of the crew going hypoxia and passing out. If pressurization
were lost, multiple alarms should go off and the crew has quick don oxygen
masks at each station in cockpit.. Unless, Airbus yet again gave all that
control to computers and the failure path multiplied from primary to
secondary backup computers.. Then, failure of a few bites of data killed
all on board..

Again...

I don't like to speculate, but crew incapacitation is highly likely under
the circumstances, if the cabin pressure failed for some reason and the
crew was conscious, they would have declared and in-flight emergency.

I also noticed very little evidence of a fuel fire in the photos that have
been released, but if the aircraft hit a high ridge on the way in the
fireball wouldn't be on the ground and hence would not leave significant
 charing.

Are you sure it's not laminated like the MB glass is? Truly thick (1/2) or
thicker glass is usually bulletproof of some kind.

There's a Toada dealer nearby that has a W140 on the lot for an astronomical
price. It has bulletproof glass. When I talked to one of their salespeople
about the car and questioned this claim, they were adamant that the local MB
dealership confirmed that the glass was, in fact, bulletproof. I asked them who
they talked to so I could confirm this, but they wouldn't reveal their source.

In other words, they never talked to anyone, or the MB guys confirmed it for a
good chuckle...

Perhaps I am unreasonable but many years ago I swore I would never buy

We bought one and installed it in our sink in the main bath on the second

The thing was poorly designed from the get go. There was a plastic piece
inside that had threads. It is long enough ago that I do not recall the
exact details but the gist of the issue is that the threaded part only
screwed into the other part by one or two threads. Over time the plastic
threads would break and the thing would come apart.
Moen offers free parts so one cannot go to a local store and buy parts.
One must call Moen and wait for the parts to appear.
They were good about shipping parts but the stupid thing kept breaking and
we could not use that sink about half of the time for quite a period of
 time.
They came up with a better grade of plastic part and claimed that would
fix it but it did not.
They provided half a dozen new parts at a time so I had spares but I got
 tired of changing them out.
To their credit, when I ultimately got mad enough to demand my money back,
they sent me a cheque for what I had paid for the faucet.
That whole experience however left me unwilling to buy Moen.
They have survived so not all of their stuff must be that bad but that one
experience was enough to make me look elsewhere for faucets ever since.
The replacement that we bought for that Moen was a Delta, if my memory is
correct and it was on the sink when we fully renovated the bathroom and
removed the sink and vanity altogther.

The original taps were better than the Moen. They may have been Delta as
well. They had two knobs and my wife wanted a single handle faucet. We had
to replace the sink which rusted out and that justified new taps at the
 same time.
That was when we got the Moen that was no end of trouble.

The Republican potential candidates have a new category this time around.
Several of them are Undocumented Democrat.

Hillary is taking some reality hits lately from her actions. It seems
unlikely she will have the political traction she once had with hard core
progressives and Democratic voters. Based on the latest actions by
Congress, she may be voted in by a jury of 12 rather than a political
election.

I sure picked a strange time to grow old in. Seems the whole hope and
change was a typo for the teleprompter... the real text read hype and
chains apparently..

On a positive note... my old Mercedes just keeps working as designed...
they don't lie to me, the work when I want them to, and if they don't I can
fix them..
Now I return you to your daily oil thread.. ;

Are you sure it's not laminated like the MB glass is? Truly thick (1/2)
or thicker glass is usually bulletproof of some kind.

There's a Toada dealer nearby that has a W140 on the lot for an
astronomical price. It has bulletproof glass. When I talked to one of
their salespeople about the car and questioned this claim, they were
adamant that the local MB dealership confirmed that the glass was, in
fact, bulletproof. I asked them who they talked to so I could confirm
this, but they wouldn't reveal their source.

In other words, they never talked to anyone, or the MB guys confirmed it
for a good chuckle...

Check out this website. While most of the faucets appear to be made by
Italians, isn't the Kohler deluxe model likely to be American made?

2015-03-24 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
When I tried to suggest this, she indicated that if my old BMW isn't good
enough for me, then it shouldn't be good enough for her! She was joking, but
I am pretty sure it was one of those jokes with a lot of seriousness behind
it! So, I think my house is probably a lot like yours!

There appears to be race among the R non-candidates to see who can brand
himself as the most conservative of the pack. Cruz is off to a flying
start with his call to abolish EPA, the IRS, and non-Christians.

OTOH, Jeb doesn't seem to care one way or the other so long as he is the
first to raise $1 BB.

I need to order some popcorn before the price skyrockets.

Why don't you start selling no bush bumper
stickers? You know, BUSH with the ø symbol
through it. (Vølvø content)

I'd buy one! G was ok, but should finished the job with Hussy.
GW was ok. But jeb is no different than the current VEEP, only not as funny

From the peanut gallery, I think a walker/cruz
combo would win. It would get a lot of the
population interested if ANYONE would pay
attention to what real Americans want.

I think Biteme would peat pillary in a landslide.

Re: [MBZ] OT faucets

2015-03-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Unless Kohler has moved some of the manufacturing to Mexico, their favorite
offshore place to build stuff, everything in the way of brass (faucets and
fixtures) is being made in Kohler, WI.

High quality plumbing products are either made of cast iron or brass, with
brass fixtures being the indoor, plated ones.

Interestingly, in years past professional plumbers didn't like Kohler faucets,
claiming they were difficult to work with and broke easily. It wasn't unusual
to see plumbingware in a new house that was Kohler and the fixtures being
another manufacturer's.

Theres always a 3rd party candidate, NPR just neglects to talk about them.
Seriously, in 2008 Ron Paul (then running as a Republican) was second in
Nevada, NPR reported on the 1st and 3rd place finishers completely skipping
him. So many people (including me) called them on it they had to release a lame
excuse that they didn't do what they clearly had done. I lost a lot of respect
for them that year.
In 2008 Ralph Nader made a pretty good showing considering he ran as a 3rd
party contender but mainstream media just skipped over him.
