Good point.. that is called "Al Taqqyia" [tak` ie a] which means.. the lie
blessed by allah.. which is any lie you need to tell to further the cause
of islam..

So.. perhaps.. Certainly he did not act alone.. behind the shooter was an
entire support network that convinced him to "die for islam" , armed him,
kept him wound up tight.. etc etc..

Quote from a British Army Officer from 200 years ago in what is now
Pakistan [then "India"] : "If a muslim tells you the sun rises in the East,
put your back to the wall, face West, draw your knife, and wait for his
attack."

Pretty much sums it nicely..

military does use that nomenclature. Out here in the sticks, I always
heard the M1 type as a "stripper clip" while the replaceable magazine
was called a clip.

It's not. The M1 Garand uses a clip to hold the 8 rounds together
which are inserted into the empty magazine en masse. (You can also
use the clip to load only 2 rounds.) The SKS uses a stripper clip,
which you 'strip' the rounds off of as you push them into the
magazine with your thumb.

All good and salient points! Right now, if we don't take care of the
domestic, the furrin won't matter.

back in the 50s, and early 60s anyone could buy whatever they liked,
and we had none of these problems.

I was probably 12 or 13 when I bouight my Model 61. I could walk in and
by Super X or Federals anywhere that sold em. And I did. BY the time I
was 16, the johnson nannnys were starting to take over, and suddenly, I
no longer could buy anything, unless I went to the old guy out in the
sticks who really didn't care what the feds said, and he thought I was 18.

Now, if you are seen walking from your house to the car with a long
case, someone will call the cops and the swat will show up and put
hundreds or thousands of holes in everything they see. Sheesh!

No, no checks and no lists. We need to go back to 1770, and you should
be fined if you don't carry and don't go to monthly drill/training.
(unless you are physically or mentally incapable.) That will stop the
nonsense faster than any other alternative I have seen, along with
following the sane laws. (fence, only legal immigration, maybe stop
immigration for 60 or 80 years... stop allowing people in who have no
interest or intent to assimilate.) (and fer sure, stop recruiting 'em!)

So are you complete de-regulation?
I'm not a big fan of regulation but I think there are some people who
clearly shouldn't have guns. The shooter in Orlando for instance. If
the laws currently on the books for background checks had been doing
their job he wouldn't have been able to legally buy guns in the first
place considering he was a known wife-beating anti-social, pretty much
all around not-good-guy.
I don't think that instant check infringes on my rights to own a gun
in any way. More over supporting it would be a win for the NRA since
polls seem to show most people agree with me. Instead the NRA just
looks completely obstructionist and their "good guy with a gun" mantra
just gives the anti-gun crowd more fodder.

Well Curt, perhaps the NRA is trying to follow that part of the second
amendment that says "shall not be infringed". Seems to me that
infringements on the second amendment pretty much abound these days,
like in "gun free" zones. Laws that prevent law-abiding citizens with
concealed-carry permits from entering any establishment that serves
alcohol has just infringed on the second amendment to that extent that
over 100 people were shot, and about half died from their wounds.

After long conversations, he made comments that sounded like he was going to

At some point they ignited a noise bomb to cause confusion and the hostages
escaped through the punched hole. Up to 30 escaped from another bathroom

Then the killer came out through the hole and exchanged gunfire with the police

This was the NYT version of the events from last night. It may be changed after
hostages have been interviewed and/or some sell their story to the media. If
this version is true, then the police did ignore their own safety and go after

Seems like they might want to re-think diesel trucks, buses,

Those engines tend to be bigger and dirtier than most cars.
I think a lot of the newer big diesel trucks are better than they used

talk much, and that was not long before he kicked off. He was only in
his 50s. Had I found out, I might have been able to handle one.

When I was a kid, I remember the monkey ward sale papers have several

ordered a few.

The M-1 rifle had an unusual arrangement. The en-bloc clip (which held 8
cartridges) was actually inserted into the top of the rifle. An internal
magazine fed cartridges into the chamber while the clip remained in the
rifle. The clip ejected from the bottom of the rifle after the last round
was fired. This hybrid design may have contributed to the confusion between
clips and magazines. Many older rifles used a stripper clip that attached
above an internal magazine such that the rifleman manually pushed the stack
of cartridges down the clip and into the magazine. The awful, hated black
rifle (aka Armalite 15/16 pattern) normally uses a 20 or 30 round detachable
magazine. Military cartridges come in 10-round stripper clips with an
adapter called a "spoon". You can attach the loaded clip to the top of the
magazine (with the spoon) and load all 10 rounds with one authoritative
push.

As a point of information, in many states you cannot hunt deer with an AR-15
or other rifle using the military 5.56 (aka .223) cartridge because it is
not considered sufficiently powerful for large game. The .223 cartridge
started like as a varmint load.

Not to argue, as I am sure you are technically correct, and I believe the
military does use that nomenclature. Out here in the sticks, I always

The correct term is magazine. A clip only holds cartridges, normally
outside the gun, until they are loaded in a magazine. A magazine may
be integral to a gun (like the M-1) or removable (like the M-14 or
M-16) and preloaded before being inserted into the gun.

a ban on any one particular type of gun is not going to have any effect.

[MBZ] Hood ornament repair Pix

2016-06-14 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0Bxk8a928B3RxZW9hTGZqSkJiRGM

My project from this weekend. SWMBO took the '95 E300 through an automatic car
wash several months ago, and the hood ornament was broken internally, so it
came free of the spring.

I use a dremel tool to grind out the hole big enough to accept a pin, glued
that in place with JB Weld, got to get that angle just right. Pin diameter is
also key, just small enough to fit in the hole that as occupied by the spring.
Wedged a piece of fuel hose on the underside, so the friction fit of the pin in
the hose will keep the ornament in place. It can be easily removed, if she
remembers, before the next pass through the car wash...

2016-06-14 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Yep.

My grandfather had a big chest of drawers/secretary that was built on
the east coast, probably before the Revolution. The top "drawer" pulled
out, then the front folded down to make the secretary, pretty much a
stand up desk, with cubbyholes that slid out when you dropped the
front. About 100 years ago, my grandfather took out the cubbyholes and
hardware and nailed the front to the sides. My mom got the box full of
little boxes that used to be the cubbyholes of the old secretary years
ago. About 3 years ago, I finally got the chest and the boxes. My
grandmother gave the chest to me years ago. I never had a house big
enough or fancy enough for it, so it sat on my parents porch for years.

This afternoon i took it to a restorer. there were probably 50 or so
pieces. in less than an hour, he had figured out pretty much where
everything went originally. That was quite a puzzle. Next is to do
some research to see if anyone know who made such things, and if there
is a similar one somewhere to figure out how the sliding part worked.
Then to find or make the hardware, and repair, assemble, and finish. It
was to ma a huge accomplishment to finally see how most of the pieces
fit together. No manual, no picture, nobody alive who had ever seen it
assembled. The front of the cubbyholes had birdseye maple veneer, while
the chest itself is walnut.

The story goes that the Parrot family of virginia, possibly now West
Virginia) sent it west with their newlywed daughter and her husband to
the wild land of the Wisconsin territory, or perhaps the Ioway
territory, depending on what year the migration took place. That new
bride was my great great grandmother.

Maybe some of y'all with east cost connections might have some clues
about the chest?

The ultimate challenge is to try and put something together without a
manual. I have tried that myself and actually have been successful.
Sometimes, I don't have anybody around to read the manual, and since
it is not in Braille, I just go for it!

Have you guys seen James May's new show, "Reassembler"? They give him
something all in pieces and with the manual he puts it back together?
Weird idea for a show but strangely relaxing to watch. He drones on a
bit, gives a little history and builds (rebuilds I guess) something. I
watched the first episode where he puts together a lawnmower from the
'50s. Its on Youtube...
Another James May show is "Man Lab". I've been hoping they'd do
another season. Its kind of dumb but interesting anyway.

I don't believe there are any "cheats" to get around this system. It's
pretty much baked in to a number of different things.

Jaime might have some insight into this, as his stuff has to play nice

Again, roll out the W123/W126 and earlier. Maybe the W124s, too.

This is what I like about driving the people's car. When the security
stuff like that fails the aftermarket figures out a way to defeat it.
If you buy a tune for your car the immobilizer defeat is usually
thrown in for free. Since the TDI engines get transplanted into a lot
of things defeating the electronic nannys is kind of important.

One of the reasons I bailed from my W220. If any part of the DAS
fails, you're pretty much screwed, as the fix requires replacing
everything in the system unless you have access to a Xentry system,
and in some cases not even that. Pretty much a $tealership only repair.

Gawd I love my W126 more every day. This kind of stuff reinforces my
choice to revert back to simple stuff.

Now it is being reported that the whackjob was gay, had been drunk at

I heard it, a very conflicted gay muslim taking out his issues in this

he beat, said he was gay but that the American authorities told her
not to say that.

And NPR reporting he used "an automatic-style rifle" and making it all

The nightclub gaurd, an off-duty police officer, did engage the killer in gun
fire before the police arrived.
The police engaged the killer in gunfire after they arrived and one officer got
shot in the head, but his Kevlar helmet save him.
Then the killer holed up in a bathroom with five hostages and began talking to
police on his cellphone.
After long conversations, he made comments that sounded like he was going to
kill the hostages, so the police used some sort of vehicle and punched holes
through the outside walls into the restrooms.
At some point they ignited a noise bomb to cause confusion and the hostages
escaped through the punched hole. Up to 30 escaped from another bathroom
through another hole that had been punched in the wall.
Then the killer came out through the hole and exchanged gunfire with the police
and was killed.
This was the NYT version of the events from last night. It may be changed after
hostages have been interviewed and/or some sell their story to the media. If
this version is true, then the police did ignore their own safety and go after
the killer, and probably prevented more hostage deaths.

Enough overfilling will froth the oil and the resulting air bubbles can make
hydraulic lifters "soft", which accelerates wear from excess movement as the
air bubbles compress. Also, entrained air can reduce lubrication at
pressure-fed bearings (mains, cam, etc.). Having said that, it's a matter
of how long it's run, with how much excess oil, and under what level of
stress. So it's a crap shoot. If the lifters sound OK I doubt there is
much damage.

Today I went and bought another bolt that was too short but in a flash of
inspiration I realized the original bolt I'd bought would work if I just
used it upside down... DUH! So the bolt runs up to the nut instead of the
other way.
Pentosin should get an award for poor packaging. Theres no instructions
and I spilled about an ounce of the stuff just opening the cap which is a
pull and then twist, not just a twist. It also pours really slowly and it
took most of a liter to refill the PS reservoir.
I'd pulled the horn on Sunday, its dead, I ordered another which should be
here tomorrow, fixmyvw.com with a real, made to fit for the same price as
a generic.
While I was at it I checked the oil (low), tires (3 high, one low, its
warm today) and spent some quality time with Houdini lock lube and the
trunk lock. I got some brown crud out on the key, I kept spraying the lock
and wiping the key until the crud quit coming out. I should probably
repeat in a week or two and see if it stays working.
Anyway, back on the road, actual price of repair is around $30 for the
$23/l of Pentosin and a bolt/nut/lockwasher. I used stainless so hopefully
it'll be easy to remove if needed.

2016-06-14 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
There is a woman running against "Appalachian Trail" (or was that
"Argentinian Tail"?) Mark Sanford in the primary, I'd be OK with either
given neither distinguishes him/herself in any significant way, so I
didn't figure my vote would matter much in that contest. That really was
the only R choice, aside from the drunk bloviator and maybe someone
else, neither of whom would succeed against Gerry Mander.

[MBZ] OT: Jetta is done

2016-06-14 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Today I went and bought another bolt that was too short but in a flash of
inspiration I realized the original bolt I'd bought would work if I just used
it upside down... DUH! So the bolt runs up to the nut instead of the other way.
Pentosin should get an award for poor packaging. Theres no instructions and I
spilled about an ounce of the stuff just opening the cap which is a pull and
then twist, not just a twist. It also pours really slowly and it took most of a
liter to refill the PS reservoir.
I'd pulled the horn on Sunday, its dead, I ordered another which should be here
tomorrow, fixmyvw.com with a real, made to fit for the same price as a generic.
While I was at it I checked the oil (low), tires (3 high, one low, its warm
today) and spent some quality time with Houdini lock lube and the trunk lock. I
got some brown crud out on the key, I kept spraying the lock and wiping the key
until the crud quit coming out. I should probably repeat in a week or two and
see if it stays working.
Anyway, back on the road, actual price of repair is around $30 for the $23/l of
Pentosin and a bolt/nut/lockwasher. I used stainless so hopefully it'll be easy
to remove if needed.

The Xentry system does a good job of getting into the weeds on the later
models, and just running a full set of diagnostics can yield lots of good
information.

Kaleb has more experience with the system on pre-2000 MY cars than I do, so
maybe he'll pop in and offer his insight.

Or he will offer you $500 to take the car off your hands since it's now junk.

I doubt it will make much difference unless it was routinely and consistently
overfilled.

By the way, I didn't know you had an R Class! I moved my office a couple years
ago and discovered an independent shop down the street. I have gotten to know
the guy and he knows what he is doing and done great work on every car I have
brought him. The other day when I stopped in he was a little frustrated. I
noticed he was working on an R Class diesel and he had almost the whole dash
apart. The car had a bad evaporator! What a job.

Likely totaled the car. I'll come pick it up for my usual price.

;)

Seriously, the car didn't tell you it was overfilled? I doubt much damage
could be done, if any. One would hope that the engineers anticipated such
an occurrence and if it was potentially damaging, included a system to
alert the driver of the condition.

MB Stealer in Gboro? I'd go to the nearest one and make it a point to get
a note in the service records so if there was any engine damage you would
be covered.

My understanding is that overfilling causes the oil to foam up by getting
beat by the crank and conrods and can affect proper lubrication, but I'm
not sure how it would be on your engine, might depend on how much it was
overfilled.

THE FEDS ARE GOING TO BURNING MAN, TOO — IN A $1 MILLION COMPOUND COMPLETE WITH
AIR CONDITIONING AND ICE CREAM

Sex, drugs, and techno dubstep in the desert. The feds are coming to Burning
Man too, but they’ll be relaxing in an air-conditioned compound with soft serve
ice cream.

The Bureau of Land Management is refusing to grant a permit for the Burning Man
music and culture festival unless organizers pay more than $1 million for a
lavish compound, complete with portable showers, washers and dryers, air
conditioning, refrigerators, and flush toilets.

The BLM’s district manager, Gene Seidlitz, told the San Francisco Chronicle his
agents need the amenities to oversee the Burning Man festival.

“A lot of folks think we’re like participants in that we are out there to enjoy
the event and party. But my staff and I have to be rested, well-nourished and
accommodated to the bare minimum so we can ensure health, security and safety

Re: [MBZ] W210 Ignition

2016-06-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I can't comment on your car specifically, as I'm not familiar with the
capabilities of the Xentry system relative to your model, but I would expect
that any stored faults will show up, and in doing so, will point at the source
of the issue.

"Do not attribute to malice, that which can adequately be explained by
stupidity". Hanlon's razor.

I wish people in general, and new people is specific, would not talk about
things they have no knowledge of (written by someone who just confused
clips with magazines). I had to cringe several times when watching Longmire
as they showed a close range shotgun blast as pellets covering the whole
side of a head and talking of CB radio and ham radio as the same thing.

Boatloads of them, all Chinee knockoffs, readily available.

You can get complete systems with a laptop for $500-$600, and with just a USB
hard drive and the cables and mux for around $300, I think.

You can't do squat on later model cars without one.

was with him when he purchased the ammo for the attack.

Seems rather foolish to me to alert media about a pending arrest, name the

own attack or (c) prepare the suicide bomb to take a few police out when
they come to get you. Just sayin.

Seriously, the car didn't tell you it was overfilled?  I doubt much damage
could be done, if any.  One would hope that the engineers anticipated such
an occurrence and if it was potentially damaging, included a system to
alert the driver of the condition.

MB Stealer in Gboro? I'd go to the nearest one and make it a point to
get a note in the service records so if there was any engine damage you
would be covered.

My understanding is that overfilling causes the oil to foam up by
getting beat by the crank and conrods and can affect proper lubrication,
but I'm not sure how it would be on your engine, might depend on how
much it was overfilled.

I read today that the alleged accomplice is Salman Noor, his former wife.
She is alleged to have helped him scout Disney World as a target, and knew
in advance of the actual attack. The report states that she will be arrested
within the next 24-48 hrs.

This is "breaking" and unconfirmed.

I heard on the news this morning (not NPR) that authorities were looking to
arrest a second individual. Anyone know about this?

So how do they troubleshoot the issue? Start with making you buy a new key?

What would it cost to have them toss it on a Xentry system to confirm where the

The dealer said they empirically, 85% of the time it's the key, 12% of the
time it's the coil in the ignition switch, and 3% of the time is a gross
DAS failure. New key is $308 from said dealer. I reckon that is where I

2016-06-14 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Yup.I bought a Vapalux lantern from a guy in Israel some years back. To save on
shipping he took it down to its component parts so it fit in a very small box.
The problem was I'd never even SEEN a Vapalux before and they're almost nothing
like a Coleman...It took me a long time to get it back together and working
correctly. At that point there wasn't anybody selling the correct mantles in
the US so I had to modify a mantle from another lantern to work. Interestingly
that mantle is still working good ~5 years later.

That sucks, Maine has had instant check for years. The worst part is at like a
gun show, theres usually no internet or good cell service (although it is
improving) and you'll have to go outside with the dealer to complete that step
of the transaction.
Theres no reason we can't have nationwide instant check. It should work similar
to credit reporting where you can check up on yourself and make sure the record
is accurate.

Now it is being reported that the whackjob was gay, had been drunk at
the bar several times over the last 3 years. I had wondered this when I
heard it, a very conflicted gay muslim taking out his issues in this
way. Father (Taliban supporter) called him gay, his former wife, whom
he beat, said he was gay but that the American authorities told her not
to say that.

And NPR reporting he used "an automatic-style rifle" and making it all
out to be about the "automatic-style rifle."

Then the killer came out through the hole and exchanged gunfire with the police

This was the NYT version of the events from last night. It may be changed after
hostages have been interviewed and/or some sell their story to the media. If
this version is true, then the police did ignore their own safety and go after
the killer, and probably prevented more hostage deaths.

Re: [MBZ] W210 Ignition

2016-06-14 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Now you're singin' my song!

I had to take in the dogde van in for a recall to replace the fobik. I
figgered that was a cheep way to get a couple new fobik "keys" The new
fobik screwed up several other things. So while I got "keys" with 0 on
the counters, there were tradeoffs that were negative.

I will probably keep a newish fobik van, but I am keeping everything
else in the 123,124, 126 classes. If it gets to where I can't get
enough parts to keep em running for reasonable prices, then the next
best thing is to move to a small town or neighborhood where you can walk
to get what you need, or drive an antique tractor to the store. I am
looking for a magneto for the tractor for further independence.

They are now braggin that the new stuff will record your location, speed
and actions for all time. SO the popos will be doing data mining to
turn up ways to give you more "revenue enhancement" options AFTER the
fact. As soon as they tie the clock to stoplight functions, they will
no longer "need" red light cameras to send you after the fact tickets.
They will simply let the computers match your location to the red lights
and ship off to you an opportunity to enhance their revenue.

Re: [MBZ] 1990 300D - SOLD!

2016-06-14 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
From what I remember, the conventional wisdom (most of which came from the good
Dr. Booth (RIP)) was that they will ALL bend the rods if the engine and/or the
rods were not replaced. If it was just the rods, they would presumably be the
newer updated rods and they must have been replaced before the engine was
damaged beyond repair. As you said, the fact that it is doing well at 261,000
miles must mean something was done. There was one of these on ebay a while
back. The seller had a LONG list of things he had done to the car to make it
perfect. He had spent a fortune on it. He also wanted A LOT for the car. I
never saw whether it sold.

Don't know. The repair codes listed on VMIs can be unique, and my dealer parts
guy said it would take some time and effort to research it. Rather than impose
on him with something that is not revenue generating, I left it at that.

I can only surmise that something was done to the car in the past, as in the
ownership of the PO and myself it hasn't developed any of the symptoms of the
failed rods/engines, lending credence to the assumption something was done in
the past to alleviate the issue. We know the original owner was pretty
aggressive about maintaining car, even though there are no records. The shop
where they took it in Austin, TX recalled both them and the car and their
efforts to take good care of it.

Nope. The DAS system incorporates the operation of a bunch of
different modules in the car, including the engine, transmission and
security, if I recall. There are three or four involved with this, so
if one craps out ou have to buy a new one and have the $tealer install

Rustbucket in Cambridge, what's not to like. At least it is not a
Cambridge Cadillac.

Re: [MBZ] 1990 300D - SOLD!

2016-06-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
