Y'all been taken over by commies.  I've got three 1995 Mercedes 124 cars, and
the annual registration is $33 each one year, then down to $11, then back up to
$33 the next year, and so forth.  My Yacht now costs $15 a year, used to be $25

Headlight protection film or the glass lenses?

I've not used any, should show up in a google search though.

Glass lenses are better if you can find them for your vehicle.

When you have them all polished and clean, apply some 20 mil (or whatever it
is) protectors. They squeege on with water and can be peeled off.

With them installed, they are thick enough to prevent UV damage to the lens, so
when they turn yellow and hazy again, you peel off the no yellow and hazy
protector and install a new one on the still clear and clean lens.

If fixed the issue on the Golf -- I installed glass headlight covers.

3. While cutting disks, also cut 1,200 grit, 1,500 grit, and 2,000 grit
disks. [the finer the grit, the more you will need]
4. Spray bottle with clean water.
5 Tape off all surrounding areas of the headlights. Next step is to sand
the plastic, and if your disc runs over on to the chrome, or paint, or
whatever, you now have a new problem. Do not goe there.
6. Clean the headlight lense, free of dirt and any contaminant.
7. Set the variable speed drill on its lowest speed, run it for a bit to
"get the feel of it".
8. Spray the lense to be polished with water from the spray bottle, you
will want to keep it wet while sanding it. As sanding material appears,
spray liberally to flush the grindings off the surface... also, spray the
sanding disk,, for same reason..
9.. Keep the sanding disc in constant motion, with overlapping pattern.
ONLY USE LIGHT PRESSURE.
Let the disc "float" on the surface, do not press
10.After a bit of buffing/sanding, you will see the haze be removed, and
when you spray with water to flush away the sanding residue, the water will
make the lense look "clear"...

11. At that point, wipe the lense with clean soft paper towel, and dry it
for inspection. You should see a uniform pattern of sanding scratches
[1,000 grit scratches only]. You may find areas of haze remain and need
further sanding / buffing to scrub off the hazed plastic layer... if you
do... wet, sand, flush, repeat, until you only have a nice smooth plastic
finish..
Use plenty of water, slow speed on drill/polish disc, and flush often..

12. Once the haze is scrubbed off, and only sanding scratches remain. Clean
the lense again, and change up to the next finer grit... wet, sand,
repeat you will now be sanding the 1,000 grit scratches out .. again...
stay in constant motion, keep it wet.
13. Shift to next finer ttgrit.. wrinse, sand, repeat at 2,000 grit the
plastic will start to look pretty clear, but you are not done just yet.

14. Use only a soft foam 4 inch buffing pad, with plastic polish buffing
material... [3M , Turtle Wax, several others sell it at FLAPS... one is as
good as another, in my experience. I like Miguares.]
Put a few drops of buff/polish on the pad,, spread it around with your
finger, spray the plastic lense with a light spray of water, and using very
light pressure, buff the plastic, again,, constant motion across the lense
in a pattern that covers the whole surface...
Spray the lense with water to flush the buffing residue and wipe the
plastic with a soft cloth [paper towel is just harsh enough to make
scratches at this point]...
Inspect your work... you may to buff some more.. or you may be all done...
look for any sanding scratches that need buffed further...
If you find none... wipe the lense with a good wax... polish the wax just
like you would if it was the paint [by hand, soft cloth]
Bobs Yer Unkle...

Probably takes longer to read all this than to actually do a set.
Look at the lense every time you do an oil change and decide if they need a
"refre sh". If you catch them early, a brief buff with 2,000 grit followed
by more wax and buff, keeps them clear.

Hope this Helps,
Good luck.

Re: [MBZ] Road trip??? Se venden en Metapan El Salvado

2020-09-29 Thread Clay via Mercedes
An adventure. Will need lots of cash to pay off border guards to get out of El
Salvador, into and out of Guatemala, and in and out of Mexico. There are “pest
control” stations where they spray the undersides with fluid. Sort of like
California, but the uzi toting fellows want to collect the fee on the spot.

Maybe best to have a crew to allow 24/7 mobility. Put large fuel tanks on the
trucks and top off as you go, stop for nothing, wee off the deck at speed.
Six hour shifts, GPS, and have the trucks serviced prior to setting the convoy
along.

I concur. The current civic unrest and raging unemployment should have very
good deals on equipment showing on your local CL. Probably get a much higher
quality compressor at a lower cost that way. HF power tools were just not that
good for long term use without having to rebuild them to a standard of
reliability.

There’s really no “treatment” that will fix the hazing that occurs. It’s

I've seen four valve pistons with valve cutouts that go to the edges

Amazingly enough, new pistons are only about $35 each, or a bit over

Yeah I actually don't know the details of how it works, but registration
on a a new car is expensive and it drops each year.

The Frontier costs more than the Element because it's a truck, which has
other fees, even though the excise tax is the same.

on the value of the car. So registering a new or valuable car in IN can
be hundreds of dollars, every year. In IL it was like $35 flat fee last
I knew. No idea if they've changed that, but given the financial
disaster that is the state of IL finances, I would not be surprised.

Reminds me I need to renew all my plates in October. Since all my cars
are old and not worth much, it's not too bad.

I can remember looking at dealer auctions, and whenever a CA titled car

to free up the title, usually $50-200, rarely zero.

My nephew in law got lucky with his cars. He gave his CRX to a friend
when he moved back to CA the first time, and I didn't hear of her having
trouble getting a MI title for it, but she might have. His Dakota went a
few years in Michigan on an expired CA plate, then a couple years in CA,
then a year in RI, then a few years in MO. He registered it in CA when
he left MO, and CA no longer had a record of him owing registration
taxes on it. My niece was all ready with her 'I told you so' speech, and
it was sort of a let down for her when he got away with it. His driving
around the country on expired CA plates used to irk her.

2020-09-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
MA penalizes you if the LAST owner didn't register the vehicle, even if it was
from a different state. When I bought my '98 Jetta the DMV guy got all
concerned when he realized I was going to have to pay a fine. It turned out to
be $50 which I figured wasn't worth worrying about. If I end up in a case where
its significant I'd go the VT route. I can be in VT in less than an hour.
Actually now that I think of it I realize some of the scumbags across the
street are driving cars on VT plates. I wonder if they're avoiding MA taxes by
doing that...

I should probably call the TM guy first to see if there will be some

tax office (2 transactions) to get a title request form sorted out, I
think they calculate the tax, then hand that to the tax man and pay the
tax before you can go to the DMV.  Fortunately the 2 county desks are in
the same room so that is easy enough (why they cannot do both at once at
one desk is beyond me), but then you have to go to the DMV which is
either 1) just down the road from the County offices and is a bit, um,

2020-09-29 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Well, VT sent me plates and some sort of registration certificate, I got
insurance so as far as I am concerned it is now "legal" to be on the
road.  VT don't do titles on vehicles 15yo or older, so this one fell in
that range.  I need to call the TitleMax guy tomorrow I guess, I just
haven't done it yet.  I wonder if he cleared the lien so VT did not see
anything.  Kaleb suggested just going to the DMV here and seeing if they
will take the VT registration certificate and turn it into a title, I
guess I could do that too but it might be less of a surprise to call TM
first.

I should probably call the TM guy first to see if there will be some
issue, SCDMV are kinda PsITA about stuff sometimes, and I need to do it
before the 30days happens or they ding me on days it was not registered
here.  I have to check about how they are doing things now, they were
only doing appointments before, and last time I went there I had to get
one like 3 weeks out.  You first have to go to the County Assessor and
tax office (2 transactions) to get a title request form sorted out, I
think they calculate the tax, then hand that to the tax man and pay the
tax before you can go to the DMV.  Fortunately the 2 county desks are in
the same room so that is easy enough (why they cannot do both at once at
one desk is beyond me), but then you have to go to the DMV which is
either 1) just down the road from the County offices and is a bit, um,
challenging, or 2) a new one in a less challenging location.  I guess if
I went to the county that shows DMV I was trying to be good...

[MBZ] YAY ME! -- W163 ML500 ignition switch / no start fixed!

2020-09-29 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
So if you recall I bought this 05 ML500 in kind of a shady deal, $400
for the vehicle, $275 to spring it from jail where it had been towed.
It had a "Start Error" which would not allow it to start.  I spent a lot
of time digging into it with the majick computer, and managed to clear
the Start Error message on the dash.  Was not apparently the keys and
code chips as those all checked out OK, the DAS (Drive Authorization
System, a little loop antenna around the key switch that reads the chip
in the keys) appeared to be happy.  I had pulled a DAS loop and module
from a junker for cheap, they are like $175 new, did not need to use it.

Still would not start, after doing some research it was suggested that
the starter power K11 relay in the fuse box under the hood was either
bad or it was not getting power to make it work. Swapped out relays
(there are a bunch that are the same), still no workies.  Turns out
after doing some electrical diagnosis I discovered I could jumper the
relay contacts to get the engine to turn over and start with the key in
Run position 2 (all dash lights come on.  (YAY).  I put a momentary
contact switch on the jumper wires so I could lift the hood and turn
over the engine to start.  (I tried to run it into the cabin but
couldn't find a convenient hole).

So that suggested that an electrical switch behind the key lock switch,
that the key lock actually actuates to start the car, was bad in the
start position 3 -- positions 1 and 2 worked and I could start and drive
the vehicle in position 2.    There is a way to test the switch and
wires right there at the switch (pink wire I think, marked #15?) but it
is tight in there so I didn't bother with that aspect, in any case that
wire is what goes to the relay activator contacts (these are the
contacts in back of the relay slot that are along the axis of the car,
the actual starter actuator contacts are the front ones that are
transverse) and I was getting no power to activate the relay.

Common issue on these vehicles apparently,  can make you crazy, a new
part is like $25 so I ordered one the other day.

There are 3 covers to take off around the back of the steering wheel and
the various arms behind it.  There are 3 Torx T25 screws on the bottom
one, some plastic tabs on the top one, and some tabs and metal snap
connectors on the right panel.  They mostly pop out with release of the
tabs and a bit of gyration and having the wheel tilt up or down.

The electrical switch is at 90deg to the key switch in a round housing.
They are (fairly) easy to pull once you get the covers off.  Small hands
would help but I managed to get the connector off (there are locking
tabs with little arms you can squeeze with your fingers, although I used
a screwdriver to push the front lock tab you can see and managed to
squeeze the back one and the connector popped right off.  Note that
there are some tabs on the top of the copnnector that slide into the
back of the lock and in the housing so it will only orient one way,
pretty much with the tabs on the top at 12 oclock if you could look from
the back.

The actual switch is further inside the round housing, and there are
also 2 locking tabs that hold it in.  You can feel inside the round
housing and get the tabs released, although again you can use a
screwdriver on the one if front.  I could not get a good grip on it to
pull it out so got a small pair of pliers to grab a contact tab and pull
it right out.

There is a small tab on the back of the key switch that turns the
ignition switch, it is like 1/4" wide it looks like, you can see on the
new one how it will fit over the key switch tab.  The old one was
clearly chewed up a bit and it was hard to turn with a screwdriver even
if the slot was OK (which it wasn't) so that was the problem, the switch
wore out or bound up and would not turn to position 3 to start the engine.

The new one slid in OK once I got the tabs oriented to the slot in the
housing, as with the connector, although I did have to put the key in a
move it a bit before the new switch would slide over it but that was
easy enough.

Buttoned everything back up, took out my jumper switch, popped the relay
back in, and JOY  Engine started right up.  YAY ME  I did notice
too that the key turned more easily so the switch was definitely
buggered from that indication as well.

This time it took like an hour, next time would be like 20min.

I"m going to put this in Benzworld with pics of all the bits involved.

Reasonably good. I've got a 21gal unit and I'll never go back to a small one.
Get a shutoff so the air doesn't leak out, and a 50' retractable line too for

For long distance portability, an air pig is my answer.
I have a 6 gallon, and I suppose I just inherited my dad's 10 gallon.
For short distances, a couple of 50' hoses come in handy.

Re: [MBZ] Air Compressors

2020-09-29 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I have a 8 gal 2 hp horizontal tank unit I got from HF, maybe 10 years ago.
Works fine except the check valve for the unloader slow-leaks after the
spring rusted out. Fine for small projects but not high volume, like a big
nail gun used all day. My neighbor has a large vertical style compressor
that he pumps up and then wheels to where he needs it. Other than CFM
capacity, I think portability is the main concern.

Does Harbor Freight sell and decent air compressors? I think I might be

bike tires and blowing sawdust off of projects.

At least try to determine how noisy they are. I have a Craftsman that I
got about 15 years ago. It's the type where the motor and compressor are
all one unit (as opposed to a separate motor with a belt drive
compressor). It's been completely trouble-free but man is it noisy. I
still almost jump out of my skin when it kicks on.

Also be sure it has the capacity for the tools you plan to get. Pressure
is one thing but what matters for many tools is the volume of air it can
deliver at that pressure.

IIRC, the relief valve on a 617.95 is around 6-7 bar, which is why the 3
bar gauge is pegged most of the time.

So the gauge can stand a fair bit of pressure.

Any pressure that's of interest will be below 3 bar, so the gauge should
be good to go. (3 bar = no risk of oil starvation on just about any
engine)

And I believe there are similar electronic gauges from slightly newer
(W126?) models that could be swapped in if you don't like having a tiny
plastic hose full of black oil under pressure in your cabin. Did the
W123 have mechanical oil gauge its entire life? I know W116 did, but its
production run ended earlier than W123.

2020-09-29 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Well, transferring is not hard. But still going to cost some money.

Finding a nice wagon without an engine is hard. No one fixes the body and
interior and suspension, then gives up on the engine. The nice cars are
typically pretty nice.

I could stick the powertrain into my 85 wagon. But that car is really well
sorted. Everything works, A/C for instance, which would be hard to do on
the 648.

Or take for instance the idea that an om648 has no oil pressure takeoff. So
that gauge no longer works in the 123 cluster unless you add an oil source.
Similarly, it lacks an intercooler right now, lacks a good engine fan. The
speedometer has a little spinner thing that reads the CAN and converts it
to cable rpm for the old gauge. Lots of sorting out to do to make it all
play nicely.

By transplanting, you take a nicely engineered fully functional older car
and pretty much destroy a lot of what makes it nice. Might as well start
with something that is already messed up.

On the plus side, the smashed chassis is a euro model with no sunroof.

How hard is fixing the body and interior, compared to finding one with
good paint and interior in SoCal and transferring all the OM648 stuff

Re: [MBZ] California is banning sales of new gas-powered cars by 2035.

2020-09-29 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
I think IC engine cars are on the way out no matter what anyone says. The
new batteries remove most of the reasons to own a gas car. They should be
here in a year or two. That will drop the price of the cars to lower than
their IC equivalents.

Finally got the om648 wagon running after its encounter with a car
transporter. A fuse had blown in the k40 relay for some reason, so the
ignition was not powering up the ecu. Anyway it is very refreshing to have
modern power and a computer-controlled 722.6 transmission in that chassis.
Makes it go a lot better than before. I need a taller differential though;
not pulling any trailers and first gear is quite low. Kind of fun how it
downshifts ahead of traffic lights kind of like a large truck. It has an
aftermarket controller for the transmission.

I still dont know whether to fix the damage of not. Waiting for some
numbers from the body man. Whole car kind of needs some paint. Then the
interior needs help. Maybe sell the other wagon and make one car out of two.

I like the color. Something other than the usual silver, white, or
black. Looks like the right-hand headlight/foglight was replaced.

W211 but not the first gen. Are these to be avoided?
