My 15-year-old Lexus LS400 has no appreciable wear on the interior plastics or leather, and neither did any of the other half-dozen LS and GS models I looked at when I was shopping for one earlier this year. Also, everything electrical works perfectly, and I have all service records from day one, showing that the only work it's required has been scheduled maintenance, wear parts like the shocks, and a starter. Contrast that to any M-B made around 2000 when their quality was at an all-time low. Hyundai/Kia (they're the same company) makes some excellent cars, as good as anyone does. I'd certainly rather have an Elantra than a Corolla, although I'd go for a used 3- or 4-year-old Sonata first (the one that looks like a Jaguar). That being said, if you want a large, safe, comfortable rear-wheel-drive car that drives like a Mercedes and you are on a tight budget, your best bet is a Dodge Charger or Chrysler 300. Heresy to some here, I know. No, it's not a W123. Nobody makes 123s anymore, not even Mercedes. The global car business is a completely different place than it was 40 years ago. As Gary points out, the European manufacturers are now gladly assembling Chinese parts like Legos and calling the resulting thing a VW or a Mercedes. The Japanese don't do that so much. The Americans do, but at least they're honest about their role being basically that of designers and final assemblers, not manufacturers. A long list of repairs and replaced parts but no mention of the suspension. In my experience, you have to budget $1,500 right off the bat on any used Mercedes with the multilink rear suspension (201, 124, 201, 210 at least) for a complete rebuild (or $500 for factory parts plus a couple of unpleasant weekends lying on your back doing it yourself). That plus a possible evapectomy (or at least partial dash removal to replace dead climate control vacuum pods) makes the price pretty silly, IMHO. Also, Eureka is right on the ocean--I'd be worried about rust, even if he says there isn't any. On the plus side, once you get it sorted out, a 300CE is a heck of a nice ride. I'd hold out for a Southern California unmolested one with the '91-later interior upgrades and 24-valve engine. It's been upgraded with the maximum amount of memory, a CPU accelerator, new hard drives, an SATA card, newer video card, and a USB 2.0 card (hard to believe it came with USB 1.0 on the motherboard!), but amazingly is still running the original power supply (I do have a spare handy just in case).
