Back when there was a dive place called the No Name that was down on the
fish pier where the boats came in, tied up right outside the back door of
the place. It was just a door in the building, no sign or anything, hence
No Name. It was run by a bunch of crazy Greeks, usually a line out the
door and down the pier. My mom and grandmother came to visit me once so I
took them down there for lunch, was not too busy. You could bring your own
beer and wine and such, but you had to watch they wouldn't take it and
drink it. My grandmother asked if they had something or other that was on
the menu, the waiter turns around and walks out the back door to where a
boat was unloading and comes back with a fish and asked her if that one was
OK. At that point she just sorta nodded, the waiter yells at one of the
cooks in Greek, he turns around and the waiter tosses the fish to him,
tells my grandmother it will be ready in a few minutes. She was pretty
 much catatonic at that point.

So my mom and grandmother are sitting there eating, we ordered whatever, I
had scallops I think. There were two people at the table next to us, they
were ordering and one of them asked How are the scallops? The waiter
grabs her fork, reaches over and stabs one off my plate, and gives it to
her and says, Try it. My mom and grandmother just about died, and I was
like, this is just how it is. The waiter dropped a little plate of
something on the table after, saying Here eat this.

I went down there with some girl once, took a big bottle of cheap wine,
Gallo something that was in like a half gallon bottle. So we are sitting
there, drinking wine waiting for our orders, the waiter walks over with a
glass and pours one for himself, walks away. OK. Then he comes over a
little while later with 2 glasses, refills his and fills another one and
gives it to someone at another table. It was classic. When we left we
gave him the rest of the bottle, the cooks were all over it like crazy. It
was best to sit by the counter where the cooks were, you could sorta engage
with them, most spoke only Greek, but they would give you small plates of
 stuff they were cooking.

I went with a buddy once for lunch, it was closed, which was unusual. So
we walked to the back on the water side of the pier where the boats were,
and the door was open, a few people were in there so we went in and sat
down. My buddy sorta knew the owner or manager or whatever as he had been
going there a long time. He asked what was going on, the guy says
Immigration had come that morning and rounded up all his kitchen guys to
deport them. He said they would be back in a few days no matter what, so
for now they just had the back door open and his cousin or something was
 doing the cooking.

Legal was in an old ratty building in Inman Sq, the original caught fire
and burned down. There was a newer one in Cambridge, when my wife was like
11months preggers with our daughter she was going crazy so on a Saturday
night we went there for supper. I ordered the spicy calamari, which was
awesome, we both had some. Next morning about 4:30 the baby announces
herself, and off to the hospital we go. We always tell her it was Legal's
spicy calamari that did it. That one and the one downtown were OK, all the
others were just sorta franchise kind of places.

The problem is that then your existence becomes regimented. Suppose you decide
on your commute back that you need to stop by place X or some urgent matter

cars. Majorly inconvenient if you ask me. Until an electric car can be

During the 1990s, hydrogen was seen as the alternative fuel of the future.
Then, biofuels and compressed air took over its mantle role, while today all
the attention is focused on electric cars. If this technology fails, too (and
many have serious doubts about it), can we go back to the wood gas car?

Despite its industrial appearance, a wood gas car scores rather well from an
ecological viewpoint when compared to other alternative fuels. Wood
gasification is slightly more effiicient than wood burning, as only 25
percent of the energy content of the fuel is lost. The energy consumption of
a woodmobile is around 1.5 times higher than the energy consumption of a
similar car powered by gasoline (including the energy lost during the
pre-heating of the system and the extra weight of the machinery). If the
energy required to mine, transport and refine oil is also taken into account,
however, then wood gas is at least as efficient as gasoline. And, of course,
 wood is a renewable.

Times change, cars change. If Mercedes would build a 240D in this day and age
it would become the laughing stock of auto manufacturers. However, something in
the spirit of a 240D might work. Simple, really well built and economical.
Volkswagen kind of does it with the Jetta diesel. Why can't Mercedes do it with
a C class or CLA or B?

It's a Korean car. It was worthless when new. It could not have possibly
appreciated from worthless now that it's used.

I decided not to share the pain of trying to get rid of SWMBA's korean car.
It has nothing to do with mercedes, other than she sold the E300 and got
this, and I want to put the R107 in the garage instead of the korean car.

Two months this thing has been taking up space. Constantly renewing CL
posting. Lowering asking price in an attempt to spark interest. Rejecting
offensively low offers and know it alls who try to tell me how to sell it
better. Getting very low trade in offers for the thing that are below what
was offered when she was purchasing a replacement. I knew this was a turd on
 wheels when she got it.

SO, this weekend, I get a guy who makes a low ball email offer without seeing
the car. He is looking at same model two or more years older and almost
twice the miles, making same price bid as the older cars. Then another guy,
never considered a korean car shows interest and makes appointment to see it
 yesterday, but flakes.

Lowball larry and Flaky fred reschedule to see the car today. Low ball is
here first, does test drive, reviews file with all paper since new. Makes a
higher low ball offer which I counter with SWMBA's lowest allowed price. He
walks. I go grocery shopping, having not heard from Fred after telling him
 Larry did not purchase.

Flaky Fred calls me while I am mid grocery trip and says he is at my front
door. Dang! While I drive over, Larry texts that he will up the offer a few
hundred. I text that I am meeting another interested party, and take Fred
for a test drive. Fred is kicking tires and might call back after I tell him
Larry has made another offer. And, I return to shopping trip so I can make
 dinner.

While driving home, Larry calls and says he is really interested and wants to
review the file in the morning so he can chat up the dealership about
extended warrantee SWMBA got that covers the car out to 2020 instead of the
short time standard off the lot. He also wants all manner of paperwork,
since SWMBA is no longer living in the state. I play along, and juggle the
cats so this deal will maybe go through. I had reposted the car this
morning, since the listing expired, and with felines in the air, hissing and
spitting, another guy responds to the listing.

Two months, nobody wants this car, now I have three guys in 48 hours with a
 chub for the car.

a FFL licensed dealer, and the actual transfer then happens under the FFL
dealers license, which DOES require a background check and all the BATFE
required Federal Forms to be filled out and signed, etc etc etc..

Legally, under present law, I can not ship you a gun. I can however ship
one to myself, subject to all the state and federal laws that may apply

At this date, private citizens may buy or sell freely, privately owned
items. Prudence however would indicate you protect yourself by asking for
some form of ID from the buyer, and a written bill of sale, which
 documents
the sale showing you no longer possess the weapon and it's legal transfer
of ownership on said date. Should the weapon be used for less than legal
purpose in future you can show proof it was not in your possession at
 that
 time.

This also protect the buyer, in that any claim the weapon was stolen can
 be
put to rest with a legally executed document of sale. [at least prove YOU
 didn't steal it].

The term gun show loop hole is a handy 5 sec sound bite phrase used to
inflame both sides of the issue. IMHO, the moral equal to yelling fire
 !
in a crowded theater when there is no fire.

If it's legally owned, it can be legally sold. If you buy and sell as a
commercial enterprise, you need a FFL and all the paperwork that comes
 with
it under current law, which is all that really counts, all emotions
 aside.

A wise man knows the laws before the prosecutor files the charge against

private sales. Most of what you would see at a show is
not privately held; none of what you would see at a

over the last 2 weeks. Nice hotel. We had dinner at a fancy wine bar which
was fantastic. Much more fun than my stopping for burritos which is what
normally happens on my way back from a trip.

Anyway I'd promised to give Dimitri (well trade for a patch piece of 190D
fender) my '78 240D of HeadgasketQ fame but haven't found time to deliver it
yet. Having the Dodge 1500 should make delivery a breeze.
I'm off to deer hunting camp Wednesday and since I'll be driving right by
Dimitri's place in Maine I figured it was a good time to deliver so in
preparation I decided to get it running today.

A couple weeks ago I had put the battery charger on and while it wasn't too
thirsty I let it charge over night. I started the same today. In retrospect I
should also have plugged in the block heater, its pretty chilly today, oh
well. The battery took 2.5 amps on the 6 amp setting of my charger.

Experience has taught me that this car tends to have a sticky accelerator
linkage after sitting a long time so I started there. As expected the pivot
on top of the rocker cover was stuck. I've tried a myriad of fixes for this
but today just hit it with sandpaper until it fit good, then polished with
steel wool and lubed with PB Blaster. Surprisingly none of the other linkages
 were sticky.

Dug around and found the key, hopped in, gave a good long glow (thank you
glow plug button!) and after a false start where the battery charger sitting
on the air cleaner was hopping around like a frog in a hot pan it started
right up. Of course it blew smoke and wouldn't idle good for a minute or two
but on the whole it settled down nicely.

Of course the brakes were stuck but once it got moving that was no big thing.
Dimitri, make a note to go through the brakes :)

Anyway the plan right now is to rent a uhaul Wednesday and cart it to Maine
where Dimitri can do what he will. Like all of us I'm sure he needs another
project like he needs another armpit. ;)

line, and happily the problem disappeared for nearly a week.

The issue then resurfaced, but now the following symptoms occur all the
 time:

 1) Power brakes completely gone - must apply extremely forceful pressure on
the brake pedal (or petal, if you prefer).

 2) Cannot shut off the engine with key - must be done manually

 3) Vacuum door locks completely inoperative, even with the engine running.

Otherwise, everything else on the car works fine.

Whoever is the first to successfully diagnose this problem, based solely on
the symptoms enunciated above, wins a coveted ATTABOY.

 Good luck.

Re: [MBZ] OT Wood Floors - solid wood vs. engineered

2014-11-12 Thread dseretakis--- via Mercedes
I agree. Engineered is garbage. It will always have a cheap look to it. The pre
finished is nice but it has a subtle bevel and a finish which is too perfect.
These both detract in my opinion. The best is solid wood sanded then finished.

Keep the current wood floor you have, which is solid wood, and sand it to a
fresh finish. [there are machines you can rent to do that]. Then match the
area where you remove carpeting with new solid wood. You can then stain and
finish the whole lot the same for a match, without the expense of replacing
the existing solid wood, which should have a life span of 50 to 100 years
if kept dry and cared for.

I have had solid wood floors [installed them myself] and I've had
engineered wood floors.. I've always found the engineered wood to look
cheap and beaten after a couple years, regardless of how carefully it was
cared for... solid wood, however just gathered a nice patina that said..
I'm solid wood and I look it.

At one time, I owned 42 rentals, all of which I rehabbed and rented.. I
used engineered wood floors in a lot in them, and regretted it when I sold
them.. renters are hard use and it showed. Sort of the acid test.

My vote would be tile and solid oak. Refinish existing, replace carpet with
 new solid wood.

I'll bet at least one person on this list has an opinion on the topic.

Pros and Cons for pre-finished solid wood flooring vs engineered? We're
trying to keep the price at $6 / square foot or less, but willing to exceed
 that if necessary.

Major consideration: The new floor must stand up to the weight of three
pianos, two uprights and one baby grand. No dogs in the house, just humans
 and cats.

We are trying to decide on new flooring for our downstairs. We've got tile
in the kitchen, which we love and aren't going to change. The entryway and
connected hallway (and two closets and a half-bathroom) have a solid wood
oak floor, 20 years old now but holding up nicely. The rest of the
downstairs is carpet, which we hate and it MUST GO.

So we've pretty much decided that we'll replace all the carpet and the
existing oak floor with new wood. We'd really like to have only two
different types of flooring downstairs (tile and wood). The stairwell is
carpeted, and ideally that is the only place we'll keep carpeting.
However, the bannisters and faux stair edges are in oak to match the
entryway. I think we can live with a mis-match between stairs and new wood
 flooring.

I've been seeing this for decades. Of course, the Mercedes will last them 30

the loss of absolute newness in a couple years and want's another one.

That said, the newer models are NOT as rock solid as the older ones,

New models have electronic problems, which appear to be getting worse, and
suffer from much lower quality build (thank you Chrysler!) and I'm not sure
what I'm going to replace my W124's with when they do wear out -- 250k on the

 A very easy job if you've got a 1 1/16 deep socket (thanks Fred!) a 14mm

I'd put on McMaster Carr viton line for the injector returns and was able to
pull it off and re-install without leaks although I had to replace one
because the frontmost injector was clocked differently and the old line
wouldn't fit. I should probably replace the line from the front most injector

Car started very easily after the install which surprised me. It idles
better, smokes not at all after a small puff at startup and is noticably
quicker off the line. The nozzles I had put in are Bozio and slightly larger
than the originals which shouldn't make much difference but it was fun
telling Angie that car should be a little bit quicker. :)
I need to root around in my parts bin, one of the plastic injector line clips
is missing, I'd bought some years ago, just need to find them.
Something is still not quite right in the rear end, does replacing lower
control arm bushings require alignment? I think I already know the answer
 but...

[MBZ] Dwight and Curt's former 240D

It was fine for a week but it's cooling system started rearing it's ugly head
again! Hahaha.
Ok so I can't get the lower rad hose to warm up even when upper hose is hot-
engine is running hot at this point with coolant boiling out of rad neck.
Shouldn't lower hose be hot instead of stone cold if I'm getting coolant
circulation?
I check T stat in boiling water and it opens just fine. I'm wondering if water
pump is not working as it should. Coolant is apparently not circulating into
heater core either as it blows cold air.
So I started taking water pump out to inspect but York AC bracket appears to
be blocking one of water pump mounting bolts. Must compressor be moved? Is
there any other way around this

Easy way to test for circulation is to take out the thermostat.
Waterpump almost never fails to pump, unless the original cast
impeller was replaced with a stamped tin aftermarket POS, and I have
never seen one of them made for a MB.

But the Benz thermostats are double acting -- taking it out will allow
the coolant to circulate, but will not cause the coolant to circulate
 through the radiator.

You have to use an old thermostat that is mechanically forced open.
IIRC, Jim Cathey used a fired pistol shell casing.

circulating but let's say a blown headgasket or crack in head is pushing
exhaust gases into cooling system- will this not cause the water pump to get
air locked and no longer be able to pump? With blown headgasket coolant is

As Curt says the new tstat is high quality and works but it's not OE. Can this

So as some of you know, I have a spare head acquired at Chowdah Q. I think it
came from a later 240D. The later ones took the 12 point headbolts which
stretch. If I were to recondition this later head and put it on the 78 240D
which takes earlier style hex bolts, will it fit? Reading the factory manual it
says that the later engines had deeper bolt holes to accommodate the stretching
of the 12 point head bolts. So can I put a newer style head (assuming there is
a difference in the head) on an older block and use the newer waisted head
bolts?

I agree with Curt that the likelihood of the thermostat being faulty is
probably a stretch but I'll likely replace it with an MB original nevertheless-
hello Classic Center.
I think my next course of action is to do a leakdown test to see if any air

Since I had changed all other components (short of the block) I ordered a T

So, in short (I know, HA!) my old Tested' T'Stat was bad, not good as I
thought the hot water test indicated. Also, while i waited for a new T'Stat
I removed the guts of the old T Stat so water would flow freely thru it. It
still ran hot! But the new T Stat fixed any over heating problems. Things

So I started taking water pump out to inspect but York AC bracket appears

also looks like he does a fair amount of NOS and used part buying, too. He
had a couple of posts where he had purchased large numbers of parts and was
 selling them.

Sounds like Jaime experienced a lot of what I did some years back when I got
together with Scott Suits and tried to get at least an occasional car
enthusiast event in the calendar with the local section. Scott was all for
it, but the locals wanted nothing to do with it. All they were interested in
was social events, really little to do with the cars themselves.

What really sucked here, and I don’t know what Jaime’s situation is like, is
that the local section really covers a large area, pretty much all of west
central Florida from Sarasota up to maybe Crystal River and east to Lakeland.
There are two dealers in the immediate area, Crown in Clearwater and MB of
Tampa in Tampa. A dealer in Lakeland and Sarasota are on the fringes, but
technically in the area, I believe.

When I talked to the folks at Crown they knew about the section but had
little interaction with them. For that matter, it was tough just to find
someone at Crown who was even interested in talking about the club. I wasn’t
that interested in Crown myself, as they are about an hour away.

I went to MB of Tampa, where I do business, and quickly found the person who
did their promotions and advertising. Within 10 minutes we were in his
office talking with both the parts and service managers about possible tech
events. They were very interested and seemed a little confused as to why
they never heard anything from the local section.

I spoke to the advertising person at the dealer in Lakeland over the phone,
 and they were interested too.

I already described the response I got when I brought up the possibility of
having an occasional meeting and/or tech event in Tampa. They pretty much
told me that was a nice idea and moved along to something else. I knew at
the point I was wasting my time.

What’s really sad is that the local section (and this is historical, as I
don’t know what’s going on now) seemed to be a social club for the elder and
elite. All they seemed to be interested in was getting together at a
restaurant, maybe after a drive, and having lunch or dinner. No shows, no
tech events, no autocrosses, nada. I know that Scott was successful in
getting a few things going in the past couple of years, as that was when he
contacted me about rejoining. I think he got something set up at a local
airport used for closed track events a while back, maybe an autocross, I
 don’t recall.

Worse yet, there is a huge area for the section to draw from, and lots of
potential members. By limiting the meetings and events to Pinellas County,
where most of them live, they effectively cut off a large segment of
potential members, even possible casual ones.

I’ve devoted too much time to this already, but it brings up a lot of
memories of trying to find some locals to get involved with over a common
interest. It was pretty frustrating at the time, and still is to some
extent, knowing the potential that’s out there for some fun with other MB
 owners.

It would be nice to have a really active section like GWS or some of the
 sections out west.

Re: [MBZ] Report on Prius

2014-12-11 Thread dseretakis--- via Mercedes
I just don't understand why people keep buying cars from a company that
consistently and repeatedly conceals problems almost all of which are related
to safety. And I further don't understand why Toyotas reliability rankings
continue to be as high as they are. Here is a quote from the blog in the link
below:

The suit claims that a defect causes at least one headlight to function
sporadically when the vehicle is being driven, and that Toyota knew of the
problem and concealed it from prospective buyers.

This is classic Toyota. Frankly, I find it nauseating.

A check on the 2008 Prius display of miles-per-gallon yielded the follow
 results:

 Gallons: 9.72
 Miles: 481
 MPG: 49.48

The display read 48.34 for the same 481 miles.

The headlights had been flickering occasionally since it was bought from the
 dealer.
I thought it was a headlight going bad and would wait until the defective
light quit completely. Then, 3 nights ago, while driving to the grocery store
on a dark road; both lights went out. I flipped on the foglights and got off
on the shoulder. Flipping the switch turned the lights back on.
The dealer said the bulbs were bad, and since they had failed shortly after
purchasing the car, he would split the cost of replacing the bulbs which were
$200+ each. (I checked and they were $180 at FLAPS).
The dealer said a circuit in the Prius computer turned the lights off when
 the bulb went bad.
This was surprising considering the lawsuits that could result from both
headlights going out, so I Googled and got the following:

 http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/21/toyota-prius-headlight-failure-sparks-class-action-suit/?_r=0

 http://www.toyotaproblems.com/trends/prius-headlights/

or click on Bing for more info:

 2008 prius headlight failure

Since the suit had been settled with the assumption that any newer Prius
uninvolved in the class action lawsuit would not have that problem, there was
no chance of making the dealer pay the whole cost of replacing the bulbs, and
the amount of money involved did not warrant a small claims court lawsuit.

Since headlights have gone out on several other makes of cars including
Mercedes, this hasn't turned me against Prius. It's simple enough to flip on
the foglights if it happens again, so the risk is minimal.
The high intensity lights are quite effective and don't seem to blind
 oncoming cars.

I'm getting used to the bouncing around on rough roads, and I've bought
aftermarket add-on seat supports that let the seat go back 4 inches further
so tall people won't have their knees bumping the steering wheel.

Sadly, the $200 paid to the dealer has cancelled the saving on fuel for a few
thousand miles. Hopefully there will be no more unusual expenses.

The Mercedes addiction still seems to be present since I'm looking forward to
mechanical jobs on the '83 300D after the 20 year upgrade on the shop is
 complete.

I've decided to sell the pristine, all mechanical '83 240D instead of the '83
300D; but I don't want to sell it here since a local buyer will likely be
calling every time some little thing needs fixing. Haven't yet decided where
to advertise it, though. Looking around the internet and on the newsstands,
the stick shift/all mechanical 240Ds seem to be scarce and high priced.

Would like to hear from some owners of second-hand examples.

That’s worth a small fortune, Wilton - it’s “folk art”!

Time to head for the Antiques Roadshow guys……

All kidding aside, it’s amazing to me that someone would have something like
this from their childhood, unless it was held by a parent who passed it down
later in life. I wish I had some of the stuff I made, or for that matter, a
 couple of my childhood toys.

I do have a shoe box with some Matchbox cars that belonged to me as a child.
I had Matchboxs and Corgis, but since the Corgis were far more expensive (I
bought them with my allowance) I never played with them outside. That
 Matchboxs got played with outside….

I kept the 100 or so Corgis I had until the late 1980s, when I sold them to
make the down payment on our house. A nice investment, even if I hadn’t
intended for them to be used for something like that.

significant to me, though, are the curved, one-piece windshield and rear
window and the rectangular headlights streamlined into the fenders. Tail
lights were basically the same design as the headlights. The hood ornaments
were to be radio antennae. Part of the rear, underside has been lost

You could come up with towns all over the country that have advantages for
one or another reason. The New York area is a top market (above texas,
florida, and others)... the cars are bought here and have been for
decades. New Jersey (and Bergen county) have historically been the home of
most foreign car manufactures for the last 50+ years. BMW, Volvo,
Jaguar/LR, and Subaru are based here still. (plus toyota, ford and others
have offices here) BMW recently made a huge investment by building a new
campus (a few miles down the road from MBUSA). Subaru just announced
they're doing the same in NJ.

The bigger impact for me personally is on the people that work at MBUSA and
have dedicated their careers to the company. There are loads of people who
have been there for 20+ years. These people are my friends and co-workers,
so yes, I have a different perspective than someone who just considers them
moving some jobs. I wouldn't want to pick up my family to follow a job
or a company. I've seen too many people get screwed in that game.

Major company branches seldom move to Atlanta proper; they move to one of the

reasons: lower overhead, a world class airport with direct flights to all
major international cities, seldom any weather disruptions in the winter,
major international ground and air shipping routes and facilities, a few
hours drive or 45 minute flight to their plant in Alabama, etc.
Besides that, Atlanta is probably more of an international city than anyplace
