I think you have other issues. All the engine mounts been replaced (including trans)? I forgot about your 5speed, this is a euro right? Euan wrote: I undertook to report back on the fitting of engine-lurch struts to my 1985 300TD. Did they reduce the exhaust vibration problem which has bedevilled me since my indie removed my old worn-out struts long ago? Short answer: I don't know yet. But I will if you guys can help me with one last question. Getting the struts on was murder. Took several trips to the tool shop for wrenches small enough to work in the space available at the top end of the struts. However, they're fitted now, and I'm a little lighter in the knuckle-skin department. Started the engine and discovered, or should I say, rediscovered, an increased degree of engine vibration in the passenger cabin. Not intolerable but definitely noticeable. I'd forgotten how much less was transmitted with the struts removed. No lurch on shut-off though. I think I'd rather have less vibration. I'd cranked the securing nuts on the struts down to the limit of their travel. I'm wondering if perhaps I should back them off so that the rubber bushes are under less compression and can absorb more of the vibration. What do you think? Is it necessary to tighten the nuts as far as they will go? Or will that simply reduce the effectiveness of the struts? Got the clutch cylinder hydraulic lines moved from the gold to the blue car. Installed the flywheel on the blue engine (after another run to Harbor Freight for a T55 driver), and the new pilot bearing is in place. Then we found that the new clutch disk is too large for the flywheel/pressure plate! Crap! It is the proper MB part number per the EPC for the car, by VIN, but is 230mm in diameter, vs. the 200mm of the original one. Found one on-line, that is the correct diameter, to have over-nighted - hopefully we'll be able to finish the assembly, and start (if not complete) the installation Friday. We need to determine which pair of wires going to the neutral safety switch for the auto tranny control the starter, and which are (I'm guessing) the back-up lights. One pair is easily twice the diameter of the other pair, So my guess is that the thick wires are for the starter circuit. A wiring diagram for the 201 chassis would be a help at this point --- We're now thinking that perhaps a more realistic goal is to complete the Blue car, and sell the parts that are left over, rather than trying to re-assemble the gold car as an automatic. Anyone have an idea what used 2.2 engines and matching trannys are going for now? Re: [MBZ] Adjusting the W123 injection pump dampener screw
I adjust mine with the engine running. The rack dampener is just a bandaid fix, uneven idle is a sign that it is time to have the IP on the bench. Of course that costs money and anyone can adjust a rack dampener :D -Rolf harry watkins wrote: From Mac, Aug, 2008 The rack damper bolt is only part of the equation with respect to getting the idle 'right', or as right as it can be. First, the adjustment has to be done with the engine as hot as you can get it, so if you are able to work in a place near a stretch of highway all the better (mine have always run roughest right after a highway drive). This means you have about 10 minutes in which to work, before the engine cools off too much at idle. Second, as these engines age (by which I mean at higher mileages) they seem to each have their own 'sweet spot'. Some run very well at low idle RPMs. Three out of the four I have had did not. You have to adjust the idle speed as well as the rack damper - you may not be able to get a smooth idle at your current idle speed point. The third point is the injectors, but you have seen to that (I can't find your original post now, but I am assuming you had them professionally cleaned). Re: [MBZ] Turbo Adjustment 84 300D
There is a pretty big seat of the pants difference in acceleration between 9 and 11.5psi. I would measure the boost after the overboost protection valve and verify that the ALDA is seeing 11.5. Adjusting the WG spring on the T3 is a huge PITA, so much so I'd just as soon get one of the manual boost controllers off ebay for $9 and put it on. Inconsistent starting, try unhooking the vac line to the engine shutoff the next time its giving you problems. As someone else said it could also be air in the lines, crack the injector line at the injector and verify fuel is coming out. -Rolf Mitch Haley wrote: Benz Hogs wrote: Usually the wastegate will fail open and allow no boost pressure. Also check the overboost valve (bypass it if you wish). This is a common problem in low boost diagnosis. I can well imagine a wastegate spring weakening enough in 25 years to turn 11.x psi into 9.0 psi. I can also imagine it being set below 10psi from the factory. What I can't imagine is being able to tell the difference without a boost gauge or a good stopwatch.
