Yes. Bypassing all the EPA crap worked like a champ (just like on my
w123's). I'm sure the rear suspension is a bit more difficult but really
its the only thing that is vastly different.

-Rolf

Oh, really? Have you actually tried to diagnose a hard-shifting issue on
one? Rebuild the rear suspension? Or change the glow plugs?

Re: [MBZ] Report-back on engine lurch-restraint struts

2010-07-22 Thread Rolf Martin-Hoster
I think you have other issues. All the engine mounts been replaced
(including trans)? I forgot about your 5speed, this is a euro right? I
know that as of 83 they still were lacking the extra sound deadening
that the turbos had. This is idle vibration?

Euan wrote:
I undertook to report back on the fitting of engine-lurch struts to my
1985 300TD. Did they reduce the exhaust vibration problem which has
bedevilled me since my indie removed my old worn-out struts long ago?

Short answer: I don't know yet. But I will if you guys can help me
with one last question.

Getting the struts on was murder. Took several trips to the tool shop
for wrenches small enough to work in the space available at the top
end of the struts. However, they're fitted now, and I'm a little
lighter in the knuckle-skin department.

Started the engine and discovered, or should I say, rediscovered, an
increased degree of engine vibration in the passenger cabin. Not
intolerable but definitely noticeable. I'd forgotten how much less was
transmitted with the struts removed. No lurch on shut-off though. I
think I'd rather have less vibration.

I'd cranked the securing nuts on the struts down to the limit of their
travel. I'm wondering if perhaps I should back them off so that the
rubber bushes are under less compression and can absorb more of the
vibration. What do you think? Is it necessary to tighten the nuts as
far as they will go? Or will that simply reduce the effectiveness of
the struts?

Grateful as ever for your advice

Cheers

Here are the compression results (the highest reading from each cylinder)
with a warm engine, jumped battery [after a valve adjustment]. On #3 the
adapter fitting was leaking so re-tested most if not all by snugging up
the
adapter with a socket first, this evened things out significantly. I did
them on eight compression cycles each. They are lower than I would like
to
see but I believe it is because of a slow cranking speed [allegedly due to
a
tired starter motor]. There is, however, no way of really knowing this
for
certain unless the slow cranking [due to starter?] was replaced and
another
test was conducted. The readings:

Cylinder 1- 220-225
2- 220
3- 200
4- 210
5- 230

Also noticed when adjusting the valves a very minute nick (1-2mm) on the
edge/side of the #1 cam lobe. It is nothing that I would have any concern
over at all but just want to disclose everything I see...

My mechanic says the readings are way too low to allow the engine to start
in cold temps due to worn rings. He says a new engine rates at 400, and
that 275 is the absolute limit. Any comments? BTW, the car has 300+ K
miles, has been well maintained, and hasn't been driven for the past year
due to rust issues.

Installed the flywheel on the blue engine (after another run to Harbor
Freight for a T55 driver), and the new pilot bearing is in place. Then we
found that the new clutch disk is too large for the flywheel/pressure plate!
Crap! It is the proper MB part number per the EPC for the car, by VIN, but
is 230mm in diameter, vs. the 200mm of the original one. Found one on-line,
that is the correct diameter, to have over-nighted - hopefully we'll be able
to finish the assembly, and start (if not complete) the installation Friday.

We need to determine which pair of wires going to the neutral safety switch
for the auto tranny control the starter, and which are (I'm guessing) the
back-up lights. One pair is easily twice the diameter of the other pair, So
my guess is that the thick wires are for the starter circuit. A wiring
diagram for the 201 chassis would be a help at this point ---

We're now thinking that perhaps a more realistic goal is to complete the
Blue car, and sell the parts that are left over, rather than trying to
re-assemble the gold car as an automatic. Anyone have an idea what used 2.2
engines and matching trannys are going for now? We'll have an engine, auto
tranny, and rolling chassis.

the pix and the only controls I see seem to be related to signal
generation, none of them seem to be for measuring.

Again, how do you know this is an O-scope? Is there a name plate that
says something like Mark 5 Mod 0 Oscilloscope

I did think about using AC 60hz as a calibration.

Pretty sure the CRT on this thing will give you cancer if you stand

Better is easier, but not absolutely necessary. How do you know
it's a 100Hz sweep? But the completely uncalibrated sweeps are
difficult to use for frequency. Usually the sweep speeds are
in steps, X seconds/division, and you just count the number
of divisions and multiply/divide. They're not uncalibrated.
But if it's an unmarked knob you'd only normally use that
for waveform quality.

140 Hz is very close to C#3 on a piano. Compare it by ear?
Feed signal to a tuner? (Cheap frequency counter.) My Fluke
DMM does Hz on AC.

Re: [MBZ] Adjusting the W123 injection pump dampener screw

2009-08-09 Thread Rolf Martin-Hoster

I adjust mine with the engine running.

The rack dampener is just a bandaid fix, uneven idle is a sign that it
is time to have the IP on the bench. Of course that costs money and
anyone can adjust a rack dampener :D

-Rolf

harry watkins wrote:

From Mac, Aug, 2008

The rack damper bolt is only part of the equation with respect to getting
the idle 'right', or as right as it can be.

First, the adjustment has to be done with the engine as hot as you can
get
it, so if you are able to work in a place near a stretch of highway
all the

better (mine have always run roughest right after a highway drive). This
means you have about 10 minutes in which to work, before the engine cools
off too much at idle.

Second, as these engines age (by which I mean at higher mileages) they
seem

to each have their own 'sweet spot'. Some run very well at low idle RPMs.
Three out of the four I have had did not. You have to adjust the idle
speed

as well as the rack damper - you may not be able to get a smooth idle at
your current idle speed point.

The third point is the injectors, but you have seen to that (I can't find
your original post now, but I am assuming you had them professionally
cleaned).

Good luck

Mac

Re: [MBZ] Turbo Adjustment 84 300D

2009-08-04 Thread Rolf Martin-Hoster
There is a pretty big seat of the pants difference in acceleration
between 9 and 11.5psi. I would measure the boost after the overboost
protection valve and verify that the ALDA is seeing 11.5. Adjusting the
WG spring on the T3 is a huge PITA, so much so I'd just as soon get one
of the manual boost controllers off ebay for $9 and put it on.

Inconsistent starting, try unhooking the vac line to the engine shutoff
the next time its giving you problems. As someone else said it could
also be air in the lines, crack the injector line at the injector and
verify fuel is coming out.

I can well imagine a wastegate spring weakening enough in 25 years to
turn 11.x psi into 9.0 psi. I can also imagine it being set below
10psi from the factory.
What I can't imagine is being able to tell the difference without a

Mine was $22 at the U-Pull. (But they took another $13 for the
Pittman arm that I wasn't willing or prepared to take off of it.)

Chop, drop, channel? Some AR rims and fat tires? Flamethrower

Big thumper sound system? Some underbody neon? Hydraulics for some
bouncin and low ridin? Or maybe some twennyfos and donked?
Other than that it looks pretty nice.

John-

The mail gods aligned and I got back as well. You still have the engine
on the cheap? We blew it in the lemons race. Last thing I heard: If she
keeps overheating we'll just run her dry. Considering we were using a
perforated dryer door as out air filter I am not surprised. There is a
cheap 91 in town but I don't know that its worth the effort at this point.

Need to get the last few pieces of the wagon re-installed, insure it,

repair a brake line, guide rod mounts, and replace the cam oiler tubes.

Also managed to sneak in a trip to Germany... VERY awesome trip!! I

[MBZ] Short list of things I am doing on my w123 this 32nd birthday weekend.

2009-06-03 Thread Rolf Martin-Hoster

Installing new clutch/flywheel using the GWagen 23cm clutch
Installing 26mm TD front sway bar (the 15mm was *that* good).
Installing a new rear diff and one new axle(my old one is chunky).
Diagnosing doorlock vac issues and putting my euro lock pegs in.

And of course the obligatory car wash.

I believe we will have a large number of good quality pictures for all
of these, I will post those when I get 'em.

Here is my recent, unverified 0-60 on B100 from the pump (turn down your

11s with a slipping clutch on a fairly flat road crossing the city dump,

She runs she runs! Kind of. Sucking in air somewhere, trying to figure out
where. This was running on starter fluid:

http://superturbodiesel.com/std/74-o309d-motoroam-om314-t-206.html#pid2293

She sounded real smooth.

This is an A pump, anyone have experience? We put on new filter, pumped all
the old diesel out, isolated the engine and ran off a 5 gal jug of diesel.
There was one hose on the rear of the engine that broke off and I did not
put a hose on and run into the jug. I am now thinking this is where the air
was being sucked in but as of yet I can't find its purpose in the FSM. It
would have fed off the incoming line from the fuel tank.

It has potential if you can restore it. IIRC, it was way cheaper than a
