My hangar floor is painted concrete. I don't know what kind of paint, nor
how old it is, but I do know that the Chem Tool carb cleaner will dissolve
it. It is also VERY slippery when wet. I ended up buying a pair of shoes
meant for working on wet slippery surfaces from New Balance - they make as
much difference as studded snow tires vs. worn out old tires on ice/snow.

My parents bought a five gallon pail of some clear, volatile/smelly concrete
sealant made by BASF, had a gallon or so left after putting two coats on their
new 24x40 garage. Unfortunately, they took the leftover stuff to the county's
annual 'free toxic waste recycling day', so I can neither use it on my garage
floor nor tell you the product number.

Slab was poured over a packed sand base 4-5 years ago.
No known problems due to the coating, other than it's a bit slick when wet.

IF you insist upon painting, my suggestion is to put down some plywood

You have to wait 6 months or one year can't remember for the concrete to fully
cure before you paint. Why would you want to paint anyway?

GO ahead! I'd give whatever you put on a 90% chance of
peeling/flaking off within 5 years. Do it just before you want to
sell, so it looks purdy and the new owner has to deal with the
flaking paint.

Leave it be?
It is a garden shed.
Why worry about covering the concrete?

RB

Along that line: Cover it with 2" or more of dirt/gravel/peanut
shells etc.. you'll be able to stand on it much longer at a time.

'Mighty hard to "correct" what wasn't done before the concrete was poured.
Any covering on a slab without a vapor barrier under it must be porous to
allow the moisture to escape to atmosphere.

A bit late, but ask the contractor if the slab has a vapor barrier beneath
it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Concrete paint or other covering for shed floor

2015-06-04 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
In '75, we had a problem of moisture making its way through concrete slab in
George Air Force Base laundry - in Mojave Desert. For MANY years, paint,
epoxy, etc., etc., would not stay on it. "My guys" (civil engineering
painters) took me to see it and asked if I might have any suggestions. The
painted surface had little bubbles (some not so little) all over it. Guess
what I found when I broke a few of the bubbles - yep - water. I told 'em,
"Let me think about it coupla days." 'Just happened to go to Sears in
Victorville that evening. 'Walked into the appliance/tools area and
suddenly had the answer - the area had indoor/outdoor carpet on the floor!
'Next day I told "my guys,"Scrape the paint off the floor and install
indoor/outdoor carpet of appropriate color and texture." Shonuff - problem
solved!

Probably no plastic under unless you specified it and saw the plastic with
your own eyes. that means that most paints won't stay stuck because of
moisture wicking up through the concrete.

I had trouble with epoxy sticking with a sealer on top and no barrier
under. Epoxy sticks better than paint.

Talk to an epoxy contractor and see if they will guarantee their floor and
fix it if the epoxy does not stay stuck. Not cheap, but the industrial
floor epoxy is better than any you or I can buy.
