The early 40 horse VW Vans had liesurely acceleration usually measured in furlongs per fortnight. Accelerating onto a Interstate on ramp that was slightly uphill was a terrifying experience - watching the traffic bearing down from behind and the end of the merge lane approaching from ahead, AAA!! Please let me in!!! Now, they have become collector vehicles - as the original minivan. I still think about that VW van in the vide passing the Porsche 993! With aerodynamics like that van it must have had a huge amount of hp/torque. uh, no, its not worth $3k. Maybe $1500 Highly local-market dependent. Witness the current inflated prices in the SEA and PDX markets. I sold that '79 240D auto with 303kmi on it last summer for $2500. Depending on the cosmetic condition this would be a far better car. Sunil, There's your answer-if it's about lust it's worth it. A stick 240D is worth what you can get our of it for transportation. To respectfully disagree with Kaleb, here in t he Northeast, a rust free 240D stick would probably bring 3K. I don't know if I'd trade my 300D 2.5t for a 240D stick. (Mine is an auto but I have driven my brother's 240D stick.) Also the 240D has a lot fewer miles than your 300D. My 78 240D w/AT and AC is ok except when starting from a stoplight. I usually turn the AC off until I get rolling. Fixing the bushing in the AT control rod transformed it - after ~30 years all bushings and rubber parts should be looked at suspiciously. If I lived where it's hilly I believe the 240D w/AT AC would be undrivable. ~65 hp in a car weighing over 3000 #'s is just too much. Also, ~20% of HP or 12hp reduces power to 53hp! Snappy would not be an appropriate description. ;-) Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs Porsche Road Test http://members.rennlist.com/roadtest/ . - Original Message - From: Jim Cathey [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2007 10:58 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] 1982 240D - is it worth it? i don't know how driveable a 240D is on modern roads. Although if my wife gets pregnant and becomes a stay at home mom there'll be no real need for a third vehicle. Silliest thing I've ever heard! (Says the man with a dozen vehicles lurking around his house.) You'll need it eventually, and the supply could have dried up by then! -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] 1982 240D - is it worth it?
A stay at home mom is an urban myth. They are taxi mom's - even in the first few years (the pediatrician will become a primary destination). If tyou NEED two cars running, you NEED to own three. Then you can get into specail purpose vehicles (SLC, SDL, etc.) On 3/22/07, Jim Cathey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Although if my wife gets pregnant and becomes a stay at home mom there'll be no real need for a third vehicle. Re: [MBZ] 1982 240D - is it worth it?
One learns to be a better driver with less power. Even in soapbox derby, they said the winning difference was being on the right line, and steering steady. Wandering wastes time and fuel. Driving an underpowered cars teach you about looking ahead, anticipating, planning moves, especially passing carefully. With my 190Dc and 200D, I always had to drop back, look for a chance to pass coming, and then build up speed so that when the hole came, i had enough speed to pass and get back in the right lane. The 240D is worth exactly what you are willing to pay for it. Its driveability depends on what is driveable to you. There are a fair number of 240Ds still out and about. I did a quick on-line search it looks like the going price for a good, rust free 123 body 240D is about 3K.
