Re: [MBZ] Was 8500 X50 Radar Detector now My Problem
I received 4 tickets in Bethesda, MD over a 30 day period for driving up to 45 mph in four different 30 mph zones. Geico threatened to cancel my auto insurance, but I pleaded (whined) directly top their VP so they reconsidered and just doubled my rates for a few years while I learned my lesson. In the District, when they catch you speeding on photo radar there are no points, no harm so long as you pay the (usually) $100 fine... A friend's kid got 3 tickets in 3 days from the same cop in exactly the same spot. He said "I dunno how it happened!" Our turbo MB's have internal engine mods such as oilers under the pistons, etc to handle the extra pressure and heat. Would think this principle would apply to other engines as well. OK let's change this topic to a discussion of "turbocharging and installing a roll bar on a 2005 Miata". My son says you can purchase well-documented kits to do these mods. with ordinary tools and ordinary mechanical aptitude, and wants me to do it with him. This will presumably foster father-son bonding. My question is... has the child gone mad? Isn't this something one should trust solely to professionals who do this for a living? The work is supposed to take a day, and he would save $2k in labor charges. The work would be done in SWMBA/O's car port, so I am naturally fearful of disabling the Miata and keeping her nice 85 300CD out in the rain... to my detriment. Any words of advice would be appreciated. The speedometer and odometer are driven from the speedometer cable in parallel. One does not affect the other. This may be a long shot, but if you purchased this vehicle second hand it MAY have the incorrect speedometer. Yes, my son's 1985 300D was wildly inaccurate because it had a replacement 240D speedo!! Many times in the past i have been able to glue the gear to the shaft. I used epoxy but there are probably better adhesives available. JB Weld, gorilla glue etc. Be sure to degrease the gear and shaft first. If you can roughen up the bonding surfaces with emery cloth that is helpful also. I need the info requested to make an educated guess. If in fact there is a difference in rotating speed of the magnet between Euro and US all the recalibration in the world would not solve the problem. I'll be replacing the odometer gear next week after pulling my IC and counting teeth as per odometergears.com's suggestion. I can however see how not turning the odometer could create less friction allowing the speedo to read high as mine does. I'm sure I'll get to the bottom of this. > > -- Jim Johnny B. You can't order a drive gear, the trannies all output the same signal. You have to match the speedometer with the axle ratio. So if I'm right, you'll have to figure out what axle ratio you have now, then figure out what USA model used the same axle, and get a used speedo from that car. Or, get a conversion box to go in between to adjust the 25% error. :) -dm This is not an electronic speedo it is cable driven just like all my earlier 201s BTW my Euro 190D is an 86. There has to be different gear sets available for cars equipped with different engines and transmissions due to the fact that they all use different final drive ratios. Once I know for sure that the rear-end ratios are the same or different and fix the odometer i will know what to do. Are you able to find that info on a euro spec car? Johnny B. I Mac Therefore I am

on Wednesday. My speedo is off by quite a bit, Like about 25%. How's the odometer? Every time I've called our local speedo shop the _first_ thing they say to check is the odometer. Does it track the mile markers? If not, you've got a gearing problem. If it tracks, then you have a calibration problem within the speedometer itself. 25% is a lot to be off via a gear. -- Jim

I now know exactly how far off each of my speedometers are... most are within 1-3% though. A little edumacation goes a long way. :) -dm Speaking of which, I earned a speeder on the Taconic State Parkway on Wednesday. My speedo is off by quite a bit, Like about 25%. I knew I was moving along pretty well and like I said earned it. I was driving my Euro 190D 2.5 auto trans. Here's the question: Are Euro speedos driven at a different speed than US versions? This car has only 65,000 mi and was purchased from the original owner who has stated that it has not had any work done to trans or rear end. I want my speedo to be accurate, within reason. It is my belief that I will need to change the gear(s) in the trans to correct it. This is where EPC Dave or Dr Booth may be able to help, although any other knowledgeable input is also appreciated; I need to know what the original rear-end ratio is for this car and also if it differs from US versions. Using this info I will be able to determine the correct speedo drive gear-set. Simply ordering a US drive gear would be a shot in the dark. The very polite (and young) trooper had to write the ticket for the actual speed. Actually the radar and on board computer do the writing automatically. I explained that although I knew I was speeding, I had no way of knowing how fast I was traveling. He told me that I will have to submit a statement from a repair shop stating that my speedo is in error. This will change a speeder to an equipment violation to which I can plead not guilty and upon production of a receipt for the necessary repair, the case will be dismissed. The fact that my license is spotless will also be a plus when the case is considered by the judge. Johnny B. I Mac Therefore I am
