There is a utility in Windows 8 called “takeown” that can be invoked from the command line to do this. I’m not sure if it’s in Windows 7. I know I'm late to the party here, but what would be wrong with going in and applying more or less wide open (read and write) permissions to the whole volume? Wouldn't that allow the files to be read by pretty much anyone/anything regardless of OS? I've done this in Windows, Mac OS and various flavors of Linux when necessary due to problems with file or directory ownership. -D > On Sep 7, 2017, at 7:30 PM, OK Don via Mercedes wrote: > > FYI - I'm running the latest Ubuntu on an HP Elitebook 2730p. > > On Thu, Sep 7, 2017 at 12:23 PM, Craig via Mercedes > wrote: > >> On Thu, 7 Sep 2017 02:33:02 -0500 fmiser via Mercedes >> wrote: >> >> I don't personally know for sure if it will allow installation of Linux, >> but I think I have seen a web page which says it's possible. Regarding your email issue - what about using Samba on the desktop to allow a network mount of the directories? Either Win7 "windows networking" mount the Linux desktop (which I do and know is pretty easy) or have Linux mount the Win7 "network shared" directories (which I know can be done but don't do it enough to remember how) Or, can you use cygwin to change the permissions of the email directory so Win7 can write? > > fmiser wrote: > > > > But if the issue is just avoiding Gnome3 - why Gnome at all? Sound to me like MATE would be a good choice. I chose not to because (for not particular reason) I questioned whether MATE would be around long term. As of now, I see no evidence of it fading away. I had already used XFCE4 for a few situations so I shifted to that. I administer a bunch of computers and the users on all of them seem to have made the shift without problems. I also quite using gdm (gnome's graphical login) and am usually using lightdm. This has resulted in not having a user-switcher for multiple users on one computer to have a GUI to switch from one users login to another. I have found no solution for lightdm. For the system where it was important, I am using KDE's display manager, kdm. With the help of a bash script (and a .desktop file to make it a graphical button) I have a non-gnome solution. That was probably un-necessary since gdm can be used with _any_ desktop environment such as XFCE4 or OpenBox. At that point I was just so irritated with GNOME I avoided all the GNOME stuff I could. *smiles* > > With Gnome3 I am actively avoiding it. I now generally > > install XFCE4 for most users. No desktop icons. None. Right-click on the desktop if you want a menu. I have custom keyboard shortcuts to open gmrun, roxterm (my current choice in xterm), and emacs so effectively I never use the menu. gmrun is a linux-style "run" prompt with tab completion and history. I use it for opening GUI programs. With OpenBox, there is no auto-mounting of drives, or "folders" to double-click on to open a file manager. I consider those to be features - but most of the users on the system I take care of feel otherwise. :) ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I was a late adopter of Windows - waited until 3.1. I think I've only skipped one or two versions since then. Didn't get into the servers until 3.5. Almost all of the problems I've had were application related, not the OS. This includes managing a network of 8000+ PCs at 80+ locations with 150+ servers, and migrating them from W95 through W7. If it was me, and thunderbird, I'd make trip folders, search and move messages into them by date, get the new folders from the travel computer going on the home computer, and move the messages from the travel folders to the permanent folders from within T-Bird. Not exactly true, an active user community is what allows you quick answers to questions. A quality OS means you won't have that many problems.Other than a couple user questions (like trackpad shortcuts) I found the Mac easy to pick up. I've got a new Macbook Pro on order through my employer, it ought to be in any day now, I've only been waiting 6 weeks. Can you segregate all the changes (all the received and sent emails) to the email directories from the trip, and copy them off to a USB? If you can separate those and save them from the Win7 laptop, then only import those to the Linux system? In other words, use the old version that is still on the Linux and just update that with changes from the trip, rather than trying to copy all the files / directories back over to the Linux system. - Max Charleston SC ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I'm guessing it has something to do with Win 7's Access Control Lists, but I don't know how to fix those. [MBZ] Window permissions problem -- Help!
Before we went to Texas, I updated all of my email files -- all 1140 directories with 70805 files -- from our Linux system onto a USB disk and then copied them (with a program that reads Linux disks) onto our Win 7 laptop. I then proceeded to use the laptop while we were in Texas. Since Sylpheed is ported to both Linux and Windows, it worked well. The only problem I had was with the directories whose names ended with a dot. Those turned out to be problematic with the Windows OS loosing track of them and not being able to read or delete them. When I came home, I wanted to update our Linux system with the now-changed files and directories. I installed Cygwin on the laptop. With it, I was able to delete the directories whose names ended with a dot. I was also able to use rsync synchronize some of the emails with the Linux desktop. When I wanted to copy the directories from the Linux desktop (with names ending with a dot) I deleted from the laptop, I used a USB flash drive. With that and with changing file permissions in Cygwin, I have gotten the mail directories in a confused state such that Sylpheed running in Win 7 cannot write to the directories. I thought perhaps using scp to copy all the email directories and files anew from the Linux desktop to the Win 7 would solve the problem, so I renamed the top email directory and ran scp to perform the copy. After it finished the copy, I tried Sylpheed again. It still cannot write to the directory Is there some way to fix this mess? Hopefully easy?
