Re: [MBZ] Commercial freezer
You could be right. I just looked at it and from what I can see up in the fan the evaporator coils are completely iced over. It has a mechanical time clock defrost timer. I just advanced it to a defrost cycle and the compressor kicked off. I will see if it completes a defrost cycle and/or if the timer is advancing on its own. I suspect it might be bad. [MBZ] Commercial freezer
Anyone know anything about commercial freezers? Wife has a true at the bakery that the compressor is a big old heavy duty thing built like a 240D. When we had it at the house it seemed to run non stop. Long story short the thermostat was bad. Replaced that and it seemed to work for a while but then would just barely get to freezing. Took it to the bakery. One day wife plugs it in and lo and behold it gets down to -10. At some point later it’s now struggling to get to freezing or just above. I told her she needs to have it serviced, perhaps it’s low on refrigerant. It runs on r404a. I’m wondering if it cools for a while then maybe ices over due to low charge? From some quick research it appears it just uses regular manifold gauge connections like r12 perhaps. I see I can get r404a to try and top it off. High and low side pressure specs on on a label in the freezer. I have then found that it looks like r290 is the supposed new environmental friendly replacement. I have also read it looks like might be able to use r134 in place of 404? Anyone know? If that is the case would the oil be the same? I guess I could “recover” whatever 404 is in there then charge with 134a. Re: [MBZ] commercial freezer
I have to admit I'm a bit surprised. I haven't worked with any restaurant equipment since the late 1980s but what I remember of it is that it was *not* sophisticated. Reliability was paramount; no restaurant would be happy about losing a freezer full of food. Therefore things were simple and overbuilt. An extra relay or sensor would just be something that could fail and would not be used if it were not necessary. Maybe stuff is more "advanced" now. [MBZ] commercial freezer
The new thermostat and evaporator fan arrived and I replaced the thermostat. Compressor kicks on fine. Before all this is had one of the 2 evaporator fans not running. I ordered a replacement but when the unit kicked on, neither one of them were running. They should run when the 2 door contact switches are closed. I checked the voltage when my meter and when the door switches are closed its getting around 18 volts. Nowhere near 115 it should be. I then went ahead and pulled both fans and both up with power is directly applied. So, I guess the motors are fine but first I wonder why one of them was not working and why now neither of them are? Both motors are wired together then wire into the freezer but appears one of the leads runs thru a round 2 pole switch or sensor of some sort mounted up above the right fan near the evaporator. I wonder if it is some sort of temperature switch. In looking at the attached wiring diagram, I am thinking it could be the defrost termination switch. I wonder if the thing has to cool down a certain amount before the switch closes and powers on the fans? Or perhaps this switch is bad. I guess I need to see if i can bypass it and see what happens.___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Well yea I’m sure one of the fans not running was not good, but I bet that thermostat was going bad and not shutting off when it should and now it doesn’t turn on at all. Somewhere near you is an electric motor rebuild shop that can put the motor in operating condition, whatever it is.. for a lot less than price of a new one. Find them, you'll be glad you did. You said the fridge was running constantly what you didn't know it was only running with one fan.. which means 1/2 the air circulation inside the box and cooling coils.. Sort of like pulling 4 spark plug wires and driving with a trailer loaded I'd bet your KW use goes down with it working as it should. Re: [MBZ] Commercial freezer
I looked at the electrical drawing you had attached. Does the door light work? If not, I would check the power cord, and any connections between the outlet and the internal wiring of the appliance. If the last thing you did was unplug it, and now it doesn't work, I would suspect a broken wire at the plug. And no, I'm not saying you yanked it out of the wall by the cord. I'm saying that in 23 years of use, someone did several times. It failed on you. Those old freezers are like the 240D of freezers. Some of these have a delay so that they don't start immediately. E.g. if there is a power failure, often the power will come back on for a few seconds, then off, repeat, as it is being restored. Have you tried plugging it in and waiting at least 10 min or so? It’s possible but there appears to be no power at all. I need to get my meter out and do some probing. Not even the interior light comes on. Re: [MBZ] Commercial freezer
>From the diagram, bottom 1/3, there is a temperature control switch, right hand side of the diagram. I would suspect it is now failing to close the circuit to the compressor. In fact, I suspect it has been sub-par for some time which is why it was "running continuously". Many years ago, a refrigeration mechanic told me to never keep a freezer empty because it overworks the components trying to keep the empty freezer cold and at the set temperature. His advice was to fill any empty space with water bottles and let them freeze. The interior of the freezer will then stay cold soaked at the set temp and reduce the total run time required to maintain set temp. Also, should you have a power loss, the mass of frozen ice in the bottles will help prolong the cold soak of the box. [MBZ] Commercial freezer
The wife has a large 2 door commercial freezer in the garage that she uses for her business. The thing has a massive compressor and uses a ton of electricity. Anyway, a few weeks ago we were going to be out of town for a week and it was empty, so I unplugged it so it would not be running. Before that, the thing seems like it runs most of the time and rarely if ever shuts off. I have tried messing with the thermostat and if not careful, will get it to where it never kicks on. Anyway, not the issue at hand. When I plugged it back in the thing now seems to have no power at all. I tested the outlet and its fine. I would think even if the compressor or start capacitor was dead the fans etc would still come on. This is a True freezer from 1999 and is as mechanical as it gets. It has the old mechanical dial defrost timer which I have rotated around and it does not kick on. I watched a few videos on a similar problem and it was some burned wires in the electrical box/plug outlet that goes to the compressor. I have attached the wiring diagram. Anything stand out that I should check? I saw a fuse listed on the diagram and assumed it was a circuit breaker looking switch mounted to the side of the power box in the front of the freezer. I disconnected the wires from it and bypassed and it still did not work. I have not see a different fuse or anything like that.
