Theres a kit for $150 or so which includes everything you need from the bracket
to the LED to get the alternator alternating. I could put it together cheaper
but would waste a bunch of time working out the bracket...

So basically it got a 12v coil and battery, and you hooked it up to a battery

I want one for a farm truck which is why I'd want a K20, I guess I wouldn't
pass up a K30 either. It'll only be run from May through November or early
December. With Dad retiring and spending a lot more time at camp it makes sense
to have a farm truck.

I had a hand me down from my father to start with (a 64 Anglia) but the 1st one
I bought was a 65 Mustang.
It was Rangoon Red with a Red interior. It's orginal color had been cream  but
it had been painted red by the time I got it.
It was a 6 cylinder with a 3 speed manual transmission. A nice little car that
made good mileage.
I only kept it a year or two and swapped it for a 68 Cougar with a 289 and
automatic. It was Red with a Black interior.
I do sort of wish I had kept either or both of them.
I had the 68 C10 that I commented on a week or so back for the longest time,
and sometimes wonder if I should have hung onto it too.
I cannot think of another vehicle I have had that I wish I had kept.

If I had an acreage with a barn that I could store things in, it might be
different. I live in a city on a small lot and have to limit myself here.
I could take things out to the lake but parking is somewhat limited there to
and the environment is probably more harsh there to to the moisture from the
lake.

Oh, Well, cannot have it all . . .

You and me both although I actually want a K20 although I'd take a K10 in a
pinch. :) Looking on Craigslist for Las Vegas there are lots of C10s and a few
K10s. Also quite a few of each in the pacific northwest.

I could take things out to the lake but parking is somewhat limited there to
and the environment is probably more harsh there to to the moisture from the
lake.

Oh, Well, cannot have it all . . .

Here is mine not long before I sold it.
I had it some where around 24 years.
I think we got it in the spring of 1986.
We sold it somewhere around 2010 or 2011 - time flies so not sure how long ago?
I could find the dates if I looked but it is not truly important to this
discussion.
My elder son was born in December 1984 and I remember him riding in a car seat
between us when he was quite small so that probably makes it
1986 when we got it.
I had to add a seatbelt as it only came with 2.
A long time in any event. I tend to keep vehicles for a long time but that it
the longest one so far.
Although it is hard to believe that I have had my old MB for almost 10 years.
I think I got it in July 2005.

Re: [MBZ] First Cars

2015-01-30 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
My first car was a '46 Dodge panel truck with a cloth roof that always
leaked. I put a bed in the back with the idea of sleeping in it during college
semesters but got married; which entitled me to cheap campus married housing.
There was only one seat, so I built a small box with a pad on top for
passengers who had to lean back on a 2+2 upright. Not many girls I knew would
ride in it, and some were suspicious of the bed in the back, but my wife rode
in it during our year of courtship, so it must have been true love.
I had installed an old gas jet in the dash and connected it to the water pump
under the hood. The idea was to have hot water for shaving while going to
school. If you opened it with the engine at highway speed, it would shoot hot
water all the way to the back of the truck. Needless to say, some of my curious
friends turned on the valve without asking and got warmly christened.
My future wife and I were cruising through downtown Tampa on
Franklin street one night when I heard a squeal. She had turned on the valve
and became so panicked, she didn't turn it off. I cut the engine and coasted to
the side of the street. That was the first time she had ever gotten completely
furious at me, so I was glad our marriage would soon take place since she might
change her mind if she tangled with any more of my inventions.
After marriage we traded the truck for a late model '52 Chevy which lasted a
long time.

a tree. The rock literally tore the front suspension out.

Had an AM radio and heat. That was the extent of the amenities. I did

Ironically, the wife had a four door version of the exact same year and model

the absolute worst winter weather wouldn't keep it from starting. It was so
dead reliable that I refused to touch the ignition system the whole time we

Mine was a 71 Monte Carlo, a sorta light metallic blue. My dad went
halves with me on it, I think he got the better deal as I was no longer

on a Grand Prix (and totally screwed the used car dealer on the trade,
which I felt good about).

Re: [MBZ] First Cars

2015-01-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I was the first in the family to NOT have a VW Beetle for a first car. Not
sure how that happened, but

When I was in either late middle school or early high school, my brother had a
60's Beetle of some sort. He played baseball after school, so he would often
ride with a friend to school and then home from practice. This meant I was
home by myself in the afternoon after school, with his Beetle in the garage.

I would sneak his car out and drive it around the neighborhood. If the fuel
was down a little, I would top it off from the tank we had for the tractor and
other yard implements. No one ever knew I drove it - I never got caught.

The punch line is thus:

When my Dad brought the Maverick home, he took me out to teach me to drive a
stick shift. We lived on a road that was a large rectangle, so it was easy
enough to drive around the block without disturbing anyone or dealing with
traffic.

Despite having to figure out how a column shifter worked, I was able to drive
the car quite well (I thought) for a beginner after just a few turns around
the block.

Dad was very perplexed. I suspect he knew something was up...

My last year in high school my dad gave me an '84 Ford Tempo 2dr mostly because
the dealer offered him $50 in trade on it. It sat for a year from the time he
bought the replacement '91 Tempo until I could drive which of course didn't
help anything.I fiberglassed a floor into it which I then had cover with stove
pipe and sheet metal screws since Maine won't accept fiberglass floors in metal
cars. New brakes, and exhaust put it on the road.Mine had the 2.3l 4cylinder
with a 4spd which kept it from being a total slug, the autos in those cars were
terrible. Overall it wasn't a bad car. I sold it for $200 a year later when my
folks gave me their '88 GMC S15 when my mom got her Cherokee. The GMC was a
much better vehicle and lasted me through the next 5 years although it was
swiss cheese by the time I graduated from College.

My first car was a 1970 Ford Maverick two door with the inline 6, 170 ci, the
smallest displacement version of that engine.  Had a three on the tree with
worn out bushings that made shifting a search every time you went to shift.

I owned it about 6-8 months before I lost control on some ice on a really nasty
curve on the road we lived on.  Went over a large rock before striking a tree.
The rock literally tore the front suspension out.

Had an AM radio and heat.  That was the extent of the amenities.  I did install
an under dash Radio Shack cassette deck.

Ironically, the wife had a four door version of the exact same year and model
when I met her.  We had that car for years.  You couldn't kill it, and even the
absolute worst winter weather wouldn't keep it from starting.  It was so dead
reliable that I refused to touch the ignition system the whole time we owned
it, for fear that I would upset the balance and somehow jinx the reliability.

I put plugs and wires on it, and probably caps and rotors, but I never touched
the points other than to clean them up.

We sold it to someone she worked with, and their kid(s) drove the car for a
number of years after that.

I had a hand me down from my father to start with (a 64 Anglia) but the
1st one I bought was a 65 Mustang.
It was Rangoon Red with a Red interior. It's orginal color had been
cream but it had been painted red by the time I got it.
It was a 6 cylinder with a 3 speed manual transmission. A nice little
car that made good mileage.
I only kept it a year or two and swapped it for a 68 Cougar with a 289
and automatic. It was Red with a Black interior.

I do sort of wish I had kept either or both of them.
I had the 68 C10 that I commented on a week or so back for the longest
time, and sometimes wonder if I should have hung onto it too.

I cannot think of another vehicle I have had that I wish I had kept.

If I had an acreage with a barn that I could store things in, it might
be different. I live in a city on a small lot and have to limit myself here.
I could take things out to the lake but parking is somewhat limited
there to and the environment is probably more harsh there to to the
moisture from the lake.

Oh, Well, cannot have it all . . .

keeping the 6v starter. I've heard a couple and the difference is amazing. 12v
batteries are so much cheaper too and for the amount the tractor sits its hard
on batteries.

6VDC electrics until 1966.  That model also had trunk lid badging of 1300 on
it, too.

We used to convert them to 12VDC and leave the 6VDC starters in them.  They
would spin like you couldn't believe!

I have wanted a 68-72 Chevy C10 or GMC for a long time. I went to an auto show
a few weeks ago here in town and there was an orange one (I think it was a
1970) and it was totally stock original and perfect! It had 19,000 miles.

I could take things out to the lake but parking is somewhat limited there to
and the environment is probably more harsh there to to the moisture from the
lake.

Oh, Well, cannot have it all . . .

should never have sold that car.

Here is mine not long before I sold it.
I had it some where around 24 years.
I think we got it in the spring of 1986.
We sold it somewhere around 2010 or 2011 - time flies so not sure how
long ago?
I could find the dates if I looked but it is not truly important to this
discussion.
My elder son was born in December 1984 and I remember him riding in a
car seat between us when he was quite small so that probably makes it
1986 when we got it.

I had to add a seatbelt as it only came with 2.
A long time in any event. I tend to keep vehicles for a long time but
that it the longest one so far.
Although it is hard to believe that I have had my old MB for almost 10
years.

I think I got it in July 2005.

You and me both although I actually want a K20 although I'd take a K10 in a
pinch. :)
Looking on Craigslist for Las Vegas there are lots of C10s and a few K10s. Also
quite a few of each in the pacific northwest.

I learned to drive on a 57 Ford wagon (stick) bit the first car I considered
mine was a 1963 Chevy Impala, dark metallic green, 283 auto. AM radio and
heater only. No seat belts. It was my dad's car but he let me take it to
college after my freshman year. Poor handling but a good car for dating.
My sister killed it (drove it into a phone pole) after I joined the
military.

That is amazing that you still have it. I can't think of a single car
I had from 16-20 years old that I would have kept or even want back.

It's been far too long since I've driven it. That car is my
time machine. So long as I drive it only infrequently, it
takes me right back!

If I had taken my Dad up on his offer to replace the Falcon
with a newer Pinto back then, it would no longer have a home
with me. I'm glad I didn't. Then and now.

The Falcon, Ford's econobox of its day, is our largest car.
It carries six in comfort. (The Dodge truck also seats six,
but not quite as comfortably due to the back seat.) I have
gotten 30mpg freeway trips in it. Infrequently, but possible.
Single-barrel Holley carb, small displacement I6, stickshift.

My father had a 1968 Camaro SS/396 CONVERTIBLE and it was white with the orange
stripes. After I was born, (1973) they traded it for a new Buick Station.
After my brother was born in 1969, my father was Stationed in Ethiopia and he
bought an Alfa Romeo Spider Convertible. Sadly, when they left Ethiopia in
1971-72, he had to leave the Alfa Romeo. My grandmother had been taking care
of the Camaro. I don't think she ever drove it while they were in Ethiopia.

THe car I wish I had kept is the 67 chevelle SS396 /327 I had in HS before the
190Dc. It would be worth big $ now, even with the 327.
Some kid had blown up the 396 and they shoved a hi HP 327 in it. It was plenty
scary with the 327 4 spd.

The 56 Karmann Ghia might have had some value now too. THe chassis number was
only 13xx. Someplace, I still have the plate from it.
