Better is subjective.
SparkEV is a better driver in many ways than Spark (even the upgraded 2016-2017
Sparks have less than 100hp, and none of them can squeal the tires to 40mph like
SparkEV can), but I have trouble thinking of anything a Leaf can do that a
Sentra cannot.

Faster only applies to Spark and Tesla.

Cleaner I have to wonder about, especially when taking remote powerplant and
manufacturing induced emissions into account.

Cheaper to buy, only if you really mean 'bought with taxpayers' money. Spark is
a $14k car, SparkEV is a $26k car. Sentra is a $18k car, Leaf is a $30k car. And
don't get me started on Tesla.

Cheaper to operate, yes, for me an electric uses 2-3 cents per mile of fuel. A
40mpg gasser is 6 cents.

Cheaper to maintain, in the short run, an EV needs brake fluid, wiper blades and
tires, and every ten years or so coolant and hoses, assuming it has a proper
cooling system.
But the first out of warranty traction battery ($5k for Leaf, probably much more
for cars with proper battery thermal management systems) will get your
attention. I figure if I can get a used Leaf or preferably SparkEV for 10-12
cents per remaining battery warranty mile it'd be worth buying. And I have seen
$8k certified pre-owned Leafs with under 25k on the odo and battery warranty to
100k (friends don't let friends buy 2011-2012 Leafs with 60mo/60k batteries).

Mitch.

Prius traction batteries are around $2700 from Toyota; rebuilts around $1700. A
DIYer can replace bad and borderline cells in the battery for about $45 each.

My wife's son-in-law works for a dentist down Oklahoma that has more money than
sense. He has done well investing in lots of different businesses. He bought
a Chevy Volt for his employees to use as a company car. One weekend the
dentist had to have some work done on his Bentley so he decided to drive the
Volt for the weekend. I am not sure of the details, but he did something to it
where it sat all night either running or the lights on and it ended up killing
the batteries. Cost him $3500 to repair.

If you read the end of the statement they seem to not realize that a

Try four wheeling any amount with an electric car..

Thank you. That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me about cars since I
bought a Prius.
The article was about eliminating gas and diesel cars in GERMANY, but for some
reason people thought it was about doing so in America which is highly unlikely
for the reasons given.
Personally, I like having a very economical, but rough riding, gas burner such
as a Prius when fuel prices are high, and a very old, easy to fix, smooth
riding Mercedes diesel to drive when fuel prices are low.

I posted this as a news clipping of possible interest to the group.
I agree with you.
However, they seem to be talking about "pure" gas burners and diesels
while still allowing hybrids. As you know, a hybrid will make about
any trip you choose.

This sounds like a great way to suppress rugged individualism and shift
power to governments.

Re: [MBZ] Germany may outlaw gas/diesel cars

2016-10-11 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Maybe they are getting tired of supporting the countries that are
sending Germany so many of their citizens and co-religionists.

I did see this the other day and briefly noted it. Didn't the former
commie Angie shut down the nukes a few years ago after the tsunamis in
Japan? So now they have CFPPs and windmills for their power, and I
recall there being some issues among the industrial sector about that
supply stability.

And if that catches on, it will be an avalanche of abandonment of gas
cars. Faster than even 2030, because no one will want to buy a dead end
vehicle as the deadline approaches.

We are at the precipice of the end of gas cars. People need to realize
that the EV and Plug-in Hybrid is here to stay. And they are better,
faster, cleaner, cheaper to buy, cheaper to operate and cheaper to

maintain

than gas cars. Its just the public is not aware of that yet.

And, how quickly will one run the battery down using electric heat in
the vehicle? Much of the USA and pretty much all of Canada is cold and
dark in the winter.
I am in Winnipeg. It will be dark here at 4:00 in the afternoon from the
end of November until around the middle of January. It may also be -20
for much of that time.
I have my doubts on the ability of the electric car to handle the cold,
along with the heating load and the lighting loads.

And, much of the world does not have the grid capacity to re-charge all
of these electric cars.

And, much of the world uses coal to make the electricity to charge the
cars. Not as clean as the gasoline car is today.

So, this sounds a bit like flying cars that were predicted in the 50's.
