2016-06-05 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I've had to fix both manual and Lektrik windows. Worn out rack gears on
both, sliders falling out, bad motors and lotsa bad switches for
lektrik. On the first SDL, I fixed the driver;s lektrik winder 3
times. Bad rack, bad motor a couple of times. I never mined taking the
door apart on the 123 and earlier cars with the steel snap clips. the
126 and later with the cheep prastic hooks are terrible. I dread having
to take one of them off.

I've never had to repair a manual window in any vehicle ever.
I've had to repair electric windows in almost every vehicle I've ever
owned EXCEPT my '96 Dakota and '10 RAM...
I've had roughly the same number of manual window vehicles as
electric. The oldest vehicle I owned was manual ('78 240D)...

2016-06-05 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Pot metal is the devils putty. Last week I installed the sediment bowl on my
'52 Farmall, then found it was clogged, pulled, cleaned, reinstalled but when I
put on the fuel line I ham handedly cross threaded it. The brass compression
fitting managed to mangle the pot metal sediment bowl...
*&%^! I coulda just got a new compression fitting but NO some idjit makes me
get a new sediment bowl. The Massy Ferguson dealer had one but its the wrong
dang fitting, I started to make an adapter but the on a whim tried NAPA. They
had one on the shelf! Actually its not exactly the same, the old one is a "big
bowl" the new one is a "small bowl" for a newer tractor. The newer tractor is
rated for more power than my Super M so I called it good enough...

The center pot metal part in the middle of the spring broke in the driver's
doors on both the '70 220D and the '81 240D. I made new parts by grinding,
filing, and cutting large steel bolts - they will not break for a LONG time.

Yup - that's what I thought, until I actually owned several MBs with
electric windows. I had to do more repairs on the crank up windows than I
ever did on all the electric windowed MB afterwards. Progress can be a good

Even old ones that aren't so tarted up are going for stupid money. I
wonder if you could find one old enough in yurp to bring over without
all the hassles, a diesel G stripper model, ex military or something,
and use it as intended. Didn't they have 617s in them? There is a
pretty good availability of moggies, why not Gs?

The gwagen power window lifts are nothing but trouble. The plastic cable
rollers fail and they cost 600/copy to replace. They often last less than
40,000 miles. Manual actuators would save owners thousands. The 05 I had
with less than 50k needed three of them.

I can remember a couple of hybrids that made the cover of Popular Science in the
mid 1970s. One was a turbine electric series hybrid. The idea was that a turbine
running either at max efficiency or off was better than a piston engine running
all the time.
The other was a Ford LTD powered by a 2.3L Otto engine from a Pinto,
supplemented by a Rankine engine driven by the Otto engine's exhaust heat. I
always wondered how much thermal energy was in the exhaust. Is it 1/3 to the
wheels, 1/3 to the radiator, and 1/3 to the exhaust? Then converting half the
exhaust energy to work would give you about 50% more efficiency.

Yes, those are correct rule-of-thumb, rough numbers.

That is pretty nifty - gas turbine engines are among the most efficient. I
wonder which fuel provides the most efficient power? I'll bet that diesel has
more power density than any of the other possibilities.

Jaguar C-X75 hybrid concept is part electric, part jet
..
Jaguar has unveiled a new supercar that has much in common with a jet plane.
It'll accelerate quicker than a Lamborghini LP640, has a greater top speed
than a Ferrari 458 Italia, and spews out fewer emissions than a Toyota
Prius.
...
The car is a range-extended electric vehicle. In other words, it's powered
primarily by electric motors and a battery pack, but it's given extra range
(and performance) by an external power source that, in this case, is rather
unusual.
At each wheel, Jaguar's installed an electric motor, each of which delivers
145kW (195bhp) of power. These are driven by a floor-mounted lithium-ion
battery pack that can drive the vehicle for 68 miles on ordinary electric
power alone. When it runs out of juice, it can be topped up via a standard
household mains outlet or be given a boost via two 70kW (94bhp) micro gas
turbines.
These gas turbines get their power from a flow of combustion gas -- diesel,
biofuels, compressed natural gas, or liquified petroleum gas (the C-X75 has
a 60-litre tank that accommodates all four). This fuel is mixed with air and
ignited to charge the car's batteries to extend its range, but can also be
used to power the electric motors directly in order to boost performance --
a lot.
With the batteries and turbines working in tandem, Jaguar believes the car
will do 0-60mph in 3.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 205mph. Apparently,
it'll even accelerate from 50-90mph in just 2.3 seconds and do a
quarter-mile sprint in just 10.3 seconds, so there's a strong chance it'll
be quicker than almost anything.

I recall watching a gas turbine engined rail car at the speedway back
in 1984 or so. It was at the red rocks speedway run by some motor
supply house in Denver. It's parachute did not deploy on time, so it
ended up off the speedway... too bad. Fast...

gas turbine engines are among the most efficient.

My understanding is that Otto, diesel, and turbine cycle
engines are all at about the same thermodynamic efficiency
at WOT. But a turbine offers great simplicity, and if its
tremendous throttle lag isn't a problem and you're going to
run at WOT anyway to recharge quickly, it'd be a great match.
