Well, yeah, what can I say? :-)

But their LP-Gas Service Technician's Handbook has a lot of good

Good information, Dan! Thank you for it!

The 12ft.io website is interesting in the way it removes a pay-wall.

I went to www.lpgasmagazine.com to see what else they had and no matter
what I did, it thought I had an ad blocker running.

The article you linked references Cavagna North America, with a link to
its website. They are a manufacturer of propane equipment which is
different from what the manufacturers to whom I have been exposed make.

I downloaded and saved their catalog (from
https://cavagnana.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Propane_Catalog_CNA_2022_5CA1419N_rev13.2_WEB.pdf)

Their website also has interesting sections on

Training & Tutorials
https://cavagnana.com/category/training-tutorials/

and Downloads
https://cavagnana.com/download/

From the Downloads, I downloaded the LP-Gas Service Technician's Handbook.
It explains why their products are different:

American Inspired,
Italian Engineered,
Service Tech Approved!

The Handbook also has a lot of information helpful to users of propane.

Figure that they’re doing it for residential applications that use high volume
consumers like furnaces, probably not a lot. And also figure that a worst case
scenario is a full (80%) tank. Former business partner had two 1000 gallon
tanks in Indiana that fed a 120,000 BTU furnace, he never had any issues that
I’m aware of, and the temperatures could be just as bad in January/February.

Wouldn’t hurt to have the tanks located where they get sunlight on them when
possible, too.

I'm sure that at negative Fahrenheit in Michigan, a couple of 100lb

Our camp has 2x 20# tanks feeding a common regulator. The regulator came off my
great grandmother's house which sat empty since the mid '70s, I bet the
regulator is a lot older than that.
It provides low pressure for home appliances but I bet a similar system exists
for higher pressure/flow devices.

There is a setup I’ve seen many times using multiple tanks, so it shouldn’t be

Basically, you have multiple tanks set up next to each other. Each tank has a
regulator, that is then fed into a valve that’s part of a manifold connecting
the tanks together. Think of a “tee" sort of arrangement. That valve senses
pressure from each tank, and when it drops below a predetermined value, closes
off that tank from the manifold and opens to the other tank.

When I have a minute I’ll look around and see if I can find a reference to this
setup on the web. It’s dead nut simple and purely mechanical, so you don’t have
to mess with it.

Unless I find a good used reasonably priced 250+ gallon tank, I have
thought about connecting 2, possibly 3 of those 100lb tanks to run one
of the heaters in the shop.  This thing has an input BTU of 180k.  Would
that run at least one of my heaters?  If so, what parts do I need to
connect them together (manifold etc), do they need regulators?  I know
nothing about propane so need it spelled out for me.  It might just be
cheaper to buy a bigger torpedo heater and run diesel in it.

Re: [MBZ] Need propane advice

2022-11-18 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
This is true. You could easily run a line to the generator when and if you get
one and run it off the same tank. It will need a separate regulator from the
heaters, but you could still tap off the tank directly for it

Being that winter is approaching I suspect tanks would be in higher demand this
time of year.

Did your propane supplier say anything about having used tanks for sale?

I think it will come down to how often these would have to be filled. I imagine
I may just keep an eye out for a 250-500 gal tank and maybe be ready to go by
next winter. I have a smaller 60k btu torpedo heater I fired up the other day
but it fires up then flames out back and forth, never stays lit consistently.
It’s an old one that I have had for many years so it probably needs some work.
May just buy a new bigger one for now. Even after I get the heaters going in
the shop I can always use it in the barn or garage if needed.

Besides, if I get a propane tank, can set it up to run the shop and a
generator later on.

Here is a good description of how they work. Most of what I've seen in searches
is geared towards RV setups, but the same arrangement is done with larger tanks
in home installations as well. The determining factor would be the BTU rating
of the regulator so it can handle the volume of gas required. That is, allow
enough gas to flow to adequately supply the heater(s).

https://12ft.io/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lpgasmagazine.com%2Funderstand-automatic-changeover-regulators%2F

If you’re hauling tanks to get them filled this is nice as you can remove the
empty while the system continues to supply the heater from the full tank.

Basically, you have multiple tanks set up next to each other. Each tank has a
regulator, that is then fed into a valve that’s part of a manifold connecting
the tanks together. Think of a “tee" sort of arrangement. That valve senses

If I could just find one. All of them I have found have been quite a bit of
distance away, nothing semi close.

2022-11-17 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Diesel is $5/gal - not that much difference, and you'll have to keep
hauling a lot of Diesel to refill it. Get a used 500 gal. propane tank and
forget about it for a year.

From what I have read it looked like slightly under 2 gallons per hour,
but even at that, if the cost was $3 per gallon I would be looking at $6
an hour.  Seems like it would be cheaper to just run a torpedo heater.
The local farm store has a 150k btu one that supposedly runs 8 hours on
tank, which is about 8 gallons.  So a gallon of diesel an hour.
