Re: [MBZ] OT: How long have you been here? Csn you remember?

2021-12-06 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I joined Kathy Kenels's MBCA list in the mid 90s, but it had little
content about W110s, and little expertise.  I Joined Alex Gabbard's
veteran's list in 95 or 96.   Great people there. Tried the ritter
easley(hitler) list about the same time.   Nothing there but 124/126
stuff, so I quit.   When Alex gave up being listmom, I was about to
offer to, when Dickarde offered, and he already had equip and running
lists.  From dickarde's MBZ.org I was on Diesel and Veterans lists.
The veterans morphed into 108 list, and was of no use to me. By then I
had the 81 240D since about 1994 or 5.    The dickarde DIesel list and
the others all melted down when Dickarde's server melted down.
Dickarde was too busy tok'in' weed to be bothered to get a server up and
running so the lists died for a couple months.  Kaleb scavenged the
dickarde list emails he had and invited us onto his new Mercedes list.
Was there until I was booted for speaking truth. Okietalk is a great
place to be!

My 200D turned 56 in August.  I've had it 49 years.
Lost count of all the running and junker MBs I've owned.
I think I was up to 16 or so by 1979.

All Diesels other than the 2 380SLs #1 daughter insisted on, and the
E320 (124) I got from Kleb for her to drive in the winter.  Then there
was the 230TE and the 300TE.. and a junker 190c.   So I guess I have had
6 vergassers.   Happy when each one went down the road. (Except the
190c, it was only intended to be parts for 190Dc s and 200D.  I WAS
happy when I got the M120 engine from it sold!)

I joined the diesel list in 2002 and yes Dr. Booth kept order and
provided knowledge. I got my first diesel that year.(240D)

Re: [MBZ] OT: How long have you been here? Csn you remember?

2021-11-26 Thread M. Mitchell Marmel via Mercedes
I bought my first rustbucket 111 in 1998, so started with the Mercedes
Veterans group, then R-E, briefly joined MBCA, left after they were less
than thrilled with the mouse I brought to a meeting (I figured that since I
found it in my newly-purchased 1968 220D it was apropos), then was in at
the beginning of the original Dickarde Banned and MBZ lists, then off to
the K'leb lists when they started...

I've pretty much had at least one beater MB in the fleet since 1998, which
should qualify me for some sort of Eternal Masochist award... :D

2019-06-04 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
I recall not when I washed up on this list, but Dickarde and his watches were a
hot topic at the time. That would have been the precursor to the Okie list. I
think it was due to being banned from the snitter/fleasly list a few times, as
well as another, for being liberal with my condemnation of the garbage cars
coming out of Mercedes at the time.

The alternate dns server stuff was interesting wherein sites such as

I remember someone posting a bunch of pics from that Q, I guess it was
the first one, and I saw this HUGE fat guy and I was like whoTF is
that?  I think he was sitting next to Marshall maybe? Was he there?  In
any case I didn't want to ask for fear of overstepping some code or
something.  Turned out it was Jabba, he must've been like 400+ at that
point, I'm not sure how he could even move.

Riding around in a caravan going to the Benz knacker guy’s place (what was his
name? Dave?) watching Kaleb and Jabba get lost. Late nights with copious
amounts of adult beverages and the Choirboy singing Latin cantatas for us.

Damn, that was fun.

Wizbanned was also a major event and loads of fun, too. Kaleb remembers that

~2002ish? Bought a 123.190 (1985 300TD, NA engine, five speed manual
trans, black leather interior) for $1200 at an auction, but it ran terribly
due to the EGR failed wide open. Something Marshall Booth said lead me to
block off the EGR, and it was like I had a new car. Sold it for $2300 a
couple years later when I couldn't take the lack of AC any longer.

That was on Sexton's list sponsored by Rusty. Dr. Marshall Booth, LT Don,
Rusty, Jabba, and many others whose names I have forgotten were there but
not here.

Met in person: Rich, Rusty, Jabba, Craig, guy in Ohio used to have a 1995
E300 with really high miles, hope I'm not missing anyone else. Oh yeah
another guy in WDC, also forgot his name, we had lunch at Five Guys Burgers

Re: [MBZ] OT: How long have you been here? Csn you remember?

2019-06-04 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I was one of the early list members in Richarde’s lists, the dates I don’t
recall, maybe the mid 1990s? An original Hitler list member, too, but not the
first to be banned. Before Richarde I was on the Vet’s list among others. I can
recall doing BBS stuff on Mercedes with a dial up modem

Richarde’s servers were run in a garage in Toronto, maybe Dan Stern’s place, I
don’t recall. They were ancient Sun systems that he kept band aiding to the
point where they were bailing wire and duct taped together. There was no AC in
the garage, of course, but there were fans. I don’t recall the details, whether
it was an extended power outage or equipment failure, but cooling was lost and
the machines pretty much melted down, taking the whole of mbz.org along with
all the other domains he hosted down.

I don’t think there was anyone around at the site at the time, and Richarde,
being limited in his transportation choices from his remote village, couldn’t
get there for several days.

This took down the lists, Rusty’s web site, and a bunch of others I can’t
recall.

Kaleb took over the lists and aggregated them into a few. This list is the
remains that rose from the ashes of the garage in “Tronna”.

There are some great back stories in this with Richarde swapping parts for
building and hosting Rusty’s web site among others...we should compile a book
or something.

Not long after that I met MMM and CTH in person on various adventures with

I posted on alt.auto.mercedes my story of purchasing an OM617 and manual
transmission from Martin Bartloff in Hampden, VA, to replace the OM616
and very broken automatic transmission in my '82 240D and then having it
literally dropped from the back of the delivery truck's lift gate onto a
concrete driveway. Richard Sexton saw that posting and invited me to
join his diesel list.

That was at the beginning of August, 1999.

Ritter ignored my application for his list, then I joined the Sexton diesel

You were on Alex's Mercedes Veterans list.  I think he hung that up
about 1998.   I think I joined it about 1996 and I think you were there
then.   Does that make sense?

Dickarde took over operation of the veterans list and had several

Dickarde Diesel list (the best one there)  and when Dickarde od'd the
last time, Kaleb started (floo)okie, and invited everyone here.
