You can buy a little usb dongle for cheap to plug in a vhs player or 
analog camcorder to digitize the tapes on your computer, RCA inputs 
vid and L/R audio. Then you can do whatever with them, burn to dvd or 
save to some cloud service or whatever. The dongles come with some 
rudimentary software to record in some basic format, you can probably 
find something to do it better or maybe OSs support it directly now. 
It's been awhile since I did it, had a cheap board in a winders box I 
pretty much abandoned.  The vids came out ok, I thought recently 
about getting a dongle but then I would need the time to fool with it...


That is cheap and easy.

Yeah a quick Google search shows "how to use the voice over tool" so its still 
there. I hadn't looked through the feature set in years, looks like they've 
expanded it greatly...

Is there an easy way to add some voice commentary? I have a bunch of

a few of these on clearance recently for $79. Well, ok, not Toshiba brand,

Yeah, I had a high end A to D card in the Beige G3 for #1 son.  The 
next year they came out with the graphite Mac and the A to D was 
built in.  That was nice.  Somewhere he may still have his commercial 
version of Final cut Pro.  I have the graphite Mac, but it has not 
been fired up in probably 6 or 8 years.  It will likely run...



I also have a National Instruments A to D card that was $1000 in 1996 
or 7.  I don't have the labview software nor any way to hook it to 
any analog inputs, unless I could just cut off RCA cables and put the 
cut end in the terminal block.   I don't think I could figger out how 
to do the job with it.


Maybe the graphite Mac and OS 8 or 9, whatever is on it might work. 
Or maybe it might work better with something like 10.2 or 10.3. 
(but that would require lots of futzing, and probably break the final 
cut pro.

Recall that many commercial (Disney) VHS will have Macrovision copy
protection so this scheme won't work on those:
You can get a standalone DVD recorder from a thrift store for ~$20,
then plug your existing VCR as an input to it - or get a "new" thrift
VCR for $10 while you are there.  I had no idea DVD recorders had
gotten so pricey, I should start reselling; they come up a few times a
month. (For you I think I have a recorder on my shelf if you want it,
but shipping might be a bear; reply offlist if you can't find one
locally.)

I'm sure there are quality differences between DVD recorders, but to
be honest the recorder doesn't have to last very long or do very much.
I can't see visual differences but my vision is rather sad; YMMV.

I have a dongle like Rich, and a VCP with a USB-out (also thrift store
:) - but for my wedding video I recorded onto a DVD and then ripped
the DVD, rather than deal with Windows video capture software.  I
don't have other VHS that I'm interested in preserving so I am just
letting the clock run out on the rest.

(The kids played with the VCP when I got it but I don't think they
ever got any useful output.  You are welcome to that also, but again
heavy and not very usable.)
