every minute of every day. For that, the prezzy dent suggests we

And you are concerned about one lil ol unmanned mo-sheen that only
costs 20k and can be bought by other turd world dictators for $1000?

do it well..

The truly invasive drones operated by government agencies have an
operational service ceiling of 12 to 25,000 feet altitude..

I humbly suggest the net gun would require over large explosive charge to
launch a net to be effective.

Jam it... The source of jamming signal should be easy enough to mask, for a
truly ingenious electronics whizzz child..

I would think the large IQ pool here could come up with a jamming signal
carried by a laser which had a very narrow beam path and would be even more
hard to detect.. click, crash.. done.. Next please..

Especially with 4 motors and a camera.
A former neighbor had an rc plane that ran on a battery and it did ok
but with just one motor and some ability to glide, it would not use as
much power. No camera either.

The solution is obvious: a l-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-n-g extension cord.
If that can't be found found then a power laser with a feedback loop to keep it
on target; proven technology.

Re: [MBZ] OT - My Drone Buddy Gets into Trouble

2015-03-18 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I did a 3 second calculation and ruled it out. I am quick. At least
for copters, they require a lot of power, and the multi-copters have to
be electric. It might work for a blimp/dirigible or a HALE
(high-altitude long endurance) sailplane sort of thing, which this
solar-powered plane sorta is. The main problem is putting humans on
board, they cause all kinds of problems. Remote piloting technology is
getting to where they are fairly unnecessary for a lot of what pilots do
these days, esp on long-endurance or recon missions.

Some years ago a guy I knew had a line on some surplus aircraft from A
Government Agency that he was proposing to outfit with solar panels and
batteries and use them to provide cell phone service in remote areas.
These particular aircraft were HALE soaring planes that flew at 70k+ ft,
above the weather, and a cell site equipment was small and light enough
to fit in the aircraft but the power was the issue, I think he said they
could get about 2 weeks out of the package before it would have to land
and refuel so they would need at least 2 aircraft available in any given
location. I don't know what ever happened to his idea, but I see it
being proposed again now, like 20 years later, for use in Africa and
such places. I think that was going to be his first target market as he
had some experience in telephone stuff, and work with A Government
Agency which gave him some contacts in the gummints there. I think
Google is doing it maybe for internet service and voice too I guess.
The technology of all the bits is likely much better now, would not be a
huge engineering effort.

2015-03-17 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Well for entry level that would be fine until you learn how to fly one
fairly well. They will crash so you need the replacement props and
other bits which probably doubles the initial cost. You can fly around
the house or park or whatever and get some vids, refine your techniques
and see if you like it then move up. The fancier ones like the Parrot
have a GPS return-home feature if the battery gets low, or they lose
control signal or something.

You could also go hobby on it, buy all the bits and build your own.
THere is a good web site for that http://diydrones.com/

It cost a bazillion dollars to get the plane light enough that solar could

Re: [MBZ] OT - My Drone Buddy Gets into Trouble

2015-03-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I can only assume that someone ratted the guy out. I'll say that from my
distant observations (I don't work directly with him, but I know people who do)
that the guy has a reputation for being a dick. This, no doubt, was probably
the motivation for someone ratting on him.

That being said, it's probably prudent just to stand down and leave it at that
rather than poking the bear. While I have no doubt there are plenty of ACLU
and other lawyers who would take this on, pissing off the government is never a
good idea in my book. They tend to make your life miserable for a long, long
time, regardless of the outcome.

I think he said something in one of the many local TV interviews to the effect
that he wasn't doing anything wrong, and would continue to run his drone and
post videos until they came after him.

That's not smart if you ask me, but knowing what I do about him, I'm not
surprised.

So you have no problem with a civilian (non-gov't.) overflight or 24/7
aerial surveillance of your property? Or buzzing around outside your b/r

this thing out of the sky you will have to pay for it.

So are you guys saying there should be no controls on private
citizens flying drones anywhere, anytime they please - including
spying on

you or anyone else?

Yup. And if they trespass in my airspace, I also have the right
to knock 'em down with my shotgun. Seems only fair.

If they are behaving in a hazardous manner, such as interfering
with traffic, airport approach corridors, etc., the operators
can/should be charged appropriately, whether they're using a
drone or not.

Drones ain't got nuttin' to do with it.

So, how high does your airspace extend? When I'm flying over your house on
my way somewhere else, when am I entering your airspace? I don't have armor
under my seat . . .
The FAA says I have to stay 500 feet above persons and property, and I do
that.

You of course have the right to operated the drone but if it begins to infringe
on my rights I have an equal right to react. Since I'm a nice person I'd start
by asking you to stop, if you failed to stop you'd stop having a drone.
Same thing as when you tailgate me. You have the right to tailgate but I have
the right to drive really slow...

So you have no problem with a civilian (non-gov't.) overflight or 24/7
aerial surveillance of your property?  Or buzzing around outside your

 knock

Sounds like someone complained to the FAA. The commercial angle

be an excuse to try and stop him without mentioning the real

Seems to be lots of government concern about drones in general with
