Tandy has pretty good leather working tools and some how-to-do-it books. It
looks like there are some stores near you.

I would want some instructions to go by in addition to what is on the 'net.

Google "auto upholstery how to do it books" if the following link doesn't work"

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-ab=auto+upholstery+how+to+books

Good luck.

I like these suggestions of practicing on vinyl! I think I will go that route.
Guaranteed I will learn something along the way that will perfect the final
product.

Re: [MBZ] Upholstering Seats

2019-01-02 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Suggest you do a practice set for at least one seat first, using Naugahyde
that has "about the same stretch as leather, and about the same
thickness". This will allow you to make any pattern adjustment before
destroying your hides with a "woops why didn't I leave an extra 1/2 inch
there"... ...

That will do two things, 1. Perfect your pattern pieces, & 2. Allow you to
learn more cheaply..

Re: [MBZ] Upholstering Seats

2019-01-02 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Get some inexpensive "service weight" vinyl at some place like JoAnne's, they
usually have some odd color stuff in the sale bin. Make patterns from an old
cover if you can lay your hands on one -- it helps quite a bit to take one
apart to see how it's put together, and make a practice set.

I did this for both my brother's W115 and for my W108. Had leather to do a
"real" set, but both cars went to the knackers before I got them done.

It's not rocket science, but you will discover a lot of fun way to screw them
up on the first set. Make sure you cut all the alignment tags when you cut the
pieces to set up, they are required for keeping the bits from sliding around
while sewing.

And if you know someone in the upholstery business, pick their brains! Lots of
tricks that will make it easier.

Make sure you know what you are doing before stitching up leather, it's
impossible most of the time to rip out and re-sew without the holes showing, or
worse, acting as a one time use zipper.

Yes, indeed, go for it! You have the equipment.

Just keep us informed about the entire process.

Are the old seats intact enough that you can take the covers apart and
use them for patterns?
Or are you intent upon customizing the seating so that the patterns
would not help?

I think upholstery may be harder than it looks but the worst that can
happen is that you ruin the material and eat the cost of doing it again.
I think most of us would like to try doing it. I know I have looked at
the possibility of re-upholstering a boat or two but so far have not
done it.

walking foot machine and I’ve done carpet binding on the same car and various
other small leather projects. Is this crazy on my part? Anyone done this
before? Will I be in over my head?

Dimitri inquires:

>Is this crazy on my part?

Define crazy. Depends on the time line. If you need them next week, probably.
If you are willing to sacrifice some time and a hide or two for mistakes, nope.

>Anyone done this before?

Bucket list. Some time after I curtail my procrastination. Tomorrow, next week,
next year, next lifetime?

>Will I be in over my head?

Yep. That's how you learn and grow.

What makes more sense is hiring yourself out to an automotive trim shop to
enhance your already considerable skill set so you can do it at home
efficiently.
