77 240d, not sure if it's the same mechanism... but the way you describe it sounds the same. There is a slightly hooked spring loaded latch that attaches to the handle. Release the hood lever thing from inside, then wrap the wire around the latch and pull forward the same way you would pull the ha

Darren, which car? Does hood latch mean the handle that pops out of the grill after the inside hood release is pulled? Running a piece of wire around the base of the lever may allow Larry to release the hood by pulling the wire toward the passenger side of the car. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC

I am sure the stealer has a way to get in without bashing the grill. May be worth some calls, long term stealers who sold 124s may have the knowledge. most don't retain employees that long, and are therefor useless. Nothing in the CDs? Larry, I'm skeptical that you can get it open going t

I don't see how the hood can be opened via the grill without drilling/cutting/removing more metal that protects the hood latch. I'd say your best bet is to get at the end of the cable under the dash, grab with a vice grips or similar, and pop the hood that way, and then replace the failed part imm

Larry, I'm skeptical that you can get it open going through the grill, I'm going to take a look at my '95 and see what it looks like. I remember examining the mechanism and thinking that it would be quite difficult to defeat. I think that all of the cable/lever part is inside a metal box with no

With great care and a stout jeweler's screwdriver you can pop the hood on a 107, no damage. The PO did this on our for-sale SL. Took him quite awhile. My first act was to hook a coathanger wire to the release lever. Having that big semi-open circle in the middle was key, I believe. Eventually
