Its too late I'd think to change from Tucson to Laughlin for the upcoming show, but for 2007, I'd like to see some serious thought put towards the move of the meteorite show. Cloud's jamboree has long been a major rock and gem show and combined with the GLW wholesale show, it provides for many vendors and buyers from around the world, not to mention the tourist trade. With many (thousands) of rooms just in the casino hotels, nearby Kingman and Needles also offer hotels and an easy commute, finding a place to stay shouldn't be the problem like at Tucson The only drawback is flights which either put you into Kingman or Las Vegas. But still, would be minor when a flight and car to Nevada are under $400 r/t Mark. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Randy - Original Message - From: dean bessey [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Saturday, April 30, 2005 12:26 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] BLOG REPORT: DEAN AND FARMER LEAVING METEORITESFOREVER This is really funny. Almost worth reading the Blog for its entertainment value (Sort of like reading the national enquirer without the respectible or credible parts) But front page of the Blog says the following: __ Over the years we have seen meteorite dealers come and go. Now, 2 well known dealers, Mike and Dean have announced they are selling out and leaving the country. Dean wants to escape the cold of Canada and Mike states: I will not be leaving the business, just wiping out all debt, and buying a house down south the spend my time not hunting meteorites sitting on the beach sipping mango margaritas made from mangos from my garden, know what I mean? Has business for meteorite dealers reached a point where it's not profitable? _ Now I dont know farmers plans but given the strenght of the meteorite market the last few months I cant imagine anybody leaving the meteorite business because of poor sales. (An alternative hypotesis that that he made enough money to retire wasnt considered on the blog). But my lifelong dream has always been to go to a tropical island, open a bar on a beach overlooking a coral reef with a river running through it so farmers panama plans sounds more like retirement to me than abandoning a bad line of business. Also, contrary to what the blog might lead you to believe I have no intention of leaving the meteorite business an dmove to New Zealand. In fact the past 3 months has been my best 3 months ever and I have sold over a quarter million dollars of meteorites this year so far. I cant keep up and havent been able to keep my ebay auctions over 1000 all year. A lot of people genuinely believes that the meteorite business is bad. Mostly these are older collectors and dealers who has seen the price of the collections (Or inventory) drop in value over 90%. But the real buyers nowadays are new collectors who has no idea that the market has dropped in value so much. Its not a demand problem that the meteorite world is facing. Its a supply crises. However, while I will not getting out my meteorite business will evolve. I wont be selling such huge quantities of cheaper material much longer. Partly this is because of my move to New Zealand and higher shipping costs (My retirement plans noted above are still in place - I even have my pacific island wife (See http://www.meteoriteshop.com/wedding/wedding.html) although it might be nice to skip the working a bar part and just completely retire and live on the beach near a coral reef) but also I cant seem to buy much stuff in Morocco anymore. Thats the real reason my business will evolve. I used to bring over 600 kilos every 6 to 8 weeks 3 years ago. Thats all I have bought in the past year now. Not leaving that line of business because of poor sales. I am leaving because of a shortage of supply. Also, just because I am going to New Zealand dont mean I cant still deal in meteorites. I never said that I was. But I have to go until my wife gets a New Zealand passport (We spent a lot of time deciding if we would live in Canada or New Zealand and I agreed to go see how I would like it there after my wife showed me a map that showed Tahiti and Fiji as well as numerous coral reefs closer to New Zealand than they were to canada - how did that happen). I think its every canadians duty to go down to the lake (Near the stelco plant) once a year and destroy a refridgerator - we should create enough global warming to make a tropical reef of Newfoundland in 15 years flat. Its not fair that Canadians have been deprived of a coral reef and only gets sunshine 6 days a year. Need to take matters into our own hands. So poor dean has to leave nice Canada and go live near a warm south pacific beach. Luckily they have internet and postal service there so I dont have to get a real job. I dont know if they have mcdonalds there so I am not sure if I will actually be leaving civilization or not. But I should be able to rough it for at least a year or two I am sure. But I am selling down a lot of things and listing tons of meteorites and stuff on ebay. So be sure to HELP SUPPORT POOR DEAN'S RETIREMENT FUND. He is so poor with no sales that somebody should send him money (If you dont believe me? - just go read the blog). And while it is true that I am agressinvely selling off stuff and not buying now (I even skipped Tucson this year as I didnt want to slow ebay down even for a weekend) I will always be back - even though a lot of stuff is offered cheap in my auctions and sales right now as I try and liquidate things so I wont have to pay

It went both ways. Some items like the DAG martians went very high per gramcompared to current internet prices. LA002 went quite low per gram but it was a big piece. Some other items sold higher than normal and others went lower than normal. Some items did not sell. As I said it was a limited offering to a limited crowd and did not reflect true market conditions, high or low. It is up to Michael to decide if he should post or not since it was his auction. Are you implying that most of the items went for below or well below normal market value, and that he doesn't want to ruin current "street value" prices by posting the result of the auction? RE: [meteorite-list] The problems with Amgala
Good Points Stan. This is not a new characteristic of meteorites coming on to the market at different prices. Years ago Bob Haag bought the main mass of Esquel. A little later another 80kg or so fell into the hands of some other dealers. They banged it onto the market undercutting Bob. Bob kept his cool and sat back and let them sell out. After the market absorbed the other dealers supply, Bob started selling again. The dealers with deep pockets can afford to sit on their rare meteorites in the hopes of the supply coming out of the deserts drying up, which they eventually will. The partime dealers with a full time 9 to 5 job can afford to sell now with a small markup. Both strategies will make money. If finders and dealers at a new fall want to sell before classification and their are willing buyers what is the harm? The collector has the option of waiting for classification and the possibility that something strange will be discovered and the price will be higher or they can buy immediately with the possiblity of many kg coming on to the market which will outstrip demand. It is a crap shoot. This is still a free market society and collector and dealer alike can sell their meteorites any way they please. Even if that does not fit nicely intothe perfectbusiness model. Collectors can become instant dealers if a meteorite falls in their backyard (Park Forest) or ifthey decide to buy directly from Morocco because the internet makes it possible. For many this is not a business, just a hobby, which, because of the internet and ebay makes it possible to help pay for one's collection by selling extra specimens or taking a flyer on buying from Morocco. Is all this a bad thing? I don't think so. I think that this is just the way it is, always has been (Esquel), and always will be (Park Forest, Amgala, NWA, etc) Randy From: "stan ." [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [meteorite-list] The problems with Amgala Date: Fri, 06 Aug 2004 20:57:01 + The problem is that Amgala has not been completely classified yet so it is being sold as an unclassified meteorite. One of the reasons it is taking so long to classify is that many interesting features have been found in Amgala and the scientists want to describe them properly, something every fall deserves. Adam, please forgive me for being overly cynical, but what does the classification results have to do with the signifigant dip seen in the price of amgala? regardless of what it classifies as, your price for stones already in your possesion arent going to change. if it gets classified as a common stone the price isnt going to go up. if it gets classified as something exotic the price would go up, but we ahve only seen a steady downward trend in the prices - you can find smallish well crusted amgalas selling on ebay pretty regularly at 5$ a gram - not as good a deal as i just got for buying a large stone - but still about 50% of the price being asked when it first came out. this trend isnt really seen in only amgala - look at lunar material - years ago it was all priced at several thousand $ a gram - now you can get it for a few hundred per gram. NWA 1929 was going for 50 to 100$ a gram and now you can buy it for 20$ - or even as low as 5$ if you buy a big piece. olivine diogenite was going for what, 600$ a gram now you see people offering it in the 100$ ballpark. kickass LL3's like begga were several tens of $ a gram and now they can be had for 2$ a gram. look at what happened to park forrest prices. when stuff first comes out - be it a rare classification - or just an especially nice new fall it's price tends to be high - after a while more and more sources of the material open up, and competition drives the prices down. it's not about dealers not having business sense - it's about free market dynamics pushing the prices where they need to be based upon the laws of supply and demand. _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! "Who would have thought everyone would be talking about meteorites at the same time I decided to get rid of the thing," Jim Nettleton (75) said yesterday. "I mean to say, a meteorite crashes through someone's ceiling and then everyone wants one. That's pretty good timing." The avid "collector of everything" has been following intently news reports of a meteorite which crashed through the roof of an Auckland home on Saturday. Phil and Brenda Archer have been inundated with calls from around the world about the 1.3kg rock experts say could be worth a lot of money. Mr Nettleton plans to sell his own meteorite - a misshapen, hollow object he found when digging a long-drop toilet in East Roxburgh in the mid-1950s - at auction next month. "I just thought that it is no good lying around the house and when I'm gone no-one will know what it is and they will probably just throw it out," he said. "So it's better off going to someone who knows what it is; to someone who appreciates the funny-looking thing I got out of the ground." The object was confirmed as a meteorite by Otago Museum several years ago, Mr Nettleton said. Dunedin auctioneers Plumbly's would check the identification this week. Auctioneer Kevin Hayward, who had not sold a meteorite before, expected a surge in late interest. "The Auckland thing will no doubt help things along a bit, but I still have no idea what it'll sell for. Maybe $300, maybe $2000-$3000 - it's up to what a collector is prepared to pay for it," he said. Central Otago man John Lunam was hoping for similar success with a meteorite he found in Central Otago's Manhureikia River in 1980. Just like Mr Nettleton's, it had been sitting around the house gathering dust until the right moment came along. "And that moment is probably here," he said on Sunday. Hello Mike and Listmembers. Sorry, but your idea is never going to happen. Sniping on ebay is a way of life and has been since the beginning of ebay. The real solution would be for ebay to alter their auctions so that an auction could not end until 5 minuites had passed without a bid. When bidding in ebay or other on meteorites- there is nothing more disappointing than someone that lays out for the last few seconds and then outbids you with a fast server. It does not give the previous bidder any chance to reconsider their offer. I know it is fair to do this- but it seems to be the same people always doing it. It really gives that person a negative image to me. I am no better than anyone else- but I try never to do this to anyone. RE: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Market 101
Hi Doug and List Members. I agree with everything that you state in principle, Doug. It is unfortunate that you chose the LA001 thread to make your point. The LA001 situation has nothing to do with free marketing of goods or price fixing. The closest example that I can think of that would be similar to the LA001 situation is this: You are attending a live auction. The auctioneer brings a lot up for bid that you just happen to have one just like it with you. You think "hey I can sell mine here too". So you go around and offer everyone your piece as an alternative to the auctioneer's lot. I am pretty sure you would be escorted from the premises. This situation has nothing to do with free markets or price fixing. Randy From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Market 101 Date: Fri, 11 Jun 2004 15:19:08 EDT What ever happened to the pleasant humor that this list used to proffer; I've missed you all very much on my extended vacation... some really wierd things are starting to stir up the pot here (Michael and Glenmore's comments at end of this message). Good call Glenmore. Hi Michael (Blood), I know you like quotations, so here's one: "Don't just learn the tricks of the trade. Learn the trade." James Bennis Please don't consider this personal, as you would insist. You are, by some accounts the market guru and I consider you a friendly dealer and respect you appropriately as much as the next meteorite enthusiast. I really truely do, despite our differences in opinions of the past, and in that spirit I post. First, Michael, I would recommend you pick up a reprint of the following classic publication by the famous Scotsman. Perhaps you reconize it as the basic foundation of economics and markets, a favorite niche of yours: Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations, 1776. "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices." That is quite a famous quote from Smith's book, even much more than the first quote in this message. Can you interpret it as it applies to the current thread you are in the middle of? With good times most had in Tucson in mind, for an encore it is a pleasure to offer the following for your comment: FREE MARKETS AND ECONOMICS ARE BASED ON GAMING Oddly, "Game theory" is the accepted foundation of modern economics. The basic gist is that independence of suppliers forces prices to their minimum, which increases efficiency for everyone, and decreases the price determining ability of each individual firm. According to game theory, if one firm decreases the price, others offering the similar product will follow to maintain sales, but if someone increases price, others probably won't as it would result in a loss of sales. The uncool, un-american phenomenon of "collusion" is the challenge to a free market, enforced only by the invisible hand that gives naughty and deviant undeserving rivals spankings on a regular basis for MISBEHAVIOR in the markets. When firms collude to increase prices as a cooperative, loss of sales is at a minimum as consumers don't have alternative choices. This manipulation benefits those who collude, and destroys the efficiency for society. Collusion is illegal (in the US), however, implicitly, tacit understandings which include "price leadership" which if provable are illegal under antitrust law, continue. A perfect example of collusion and the blurring of the line between implicit and explicitness, is the request from Michael Blood that suppliers restrict the way business is done, i.e., a rival seller should not offer similar product at a lower price. Luckily for innocent consumers who are assumed to work equally hard for their wages (I suspect some work much harder), implicit and explicit collusion have some barriers: 1. Economic recessions: Sometimes rival firms need to lowert prices to increase their sales to pay for their own costs of doing business. This actually benefits both suppliers and consumers in the long run, as it prevents gluts from developing and tends to stablize pricing at market determined levels. 2. "Cheating": Incentive to "cheat" among suppliers participating in the illegal pricing is high due to the false price levels brought on by the collusion itself. 3. Cost of Sales Differences: A more efficient supplier can profit more at a lower price by moving a greater amount of volume that more than offsets the lower price. 4. New Entries (negatively in this forum: "those who aren't blue blooded dealers"), upon entry the new guy establishes new price baselines and errode the colluding arrangements. In Adam Smith's classic you can read all about supply and demand. Basically, if we restrict supply the next seller will not get enough gravy as the first, and the first buyer gets screwed because he played a game
Re: [meteorite-list] Los Angeles 001
Michael and List Members..I was appaled when I saw two members jump on Bob's LA001 bandwagon. My first thoughts were - "If you had this material for sale, why did you wait until Bob offered his to the list before making yours available?" If it had been a new fall or find, then the circumstances would certainly have been different and multiple offers would have been expected. But LA001 has been around for several years. To address the practiceofebay ad posting on this list vs the Yahoo Groups - I would rather see everything posted to one list, this one. I don't want to have to become a member of half a dozen lists concerning meteorites justbecause each may have their own restrictions. It also makes temporarily unsubscribing more cumbersome with multiple list memberships. The advantage of this list is that it has become all things to all people and I like that. The only exception would be the childish flame wars that sometimes infect the list. My two cents. Randy From: Michael L Blood [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Meteorite List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Los Angeles 001 Date: Wed, 09 Jun 2004 23:32:58 -0700 Greetings All, Please hear that this is addressed to a behavior, not to the individuals currently engaged in said behavior. Personally, I am stunned whenever ANYONE jumps on someone else's ad. Igrudgingly observe this among callous, competitive, immature inconsiderate"dealers" doing this to one another. However, even that seems usually to be done by someone specifically at odds at the time with the original advertiser. I know of no one at odds with Bob Verish, yet he has been unable to have a simple sale without two otherwise kind and considerate non-dealers jumping on the tail gate of his wagon, offering alternative examples of the material he has advertised. I don't mean this to be directed at the people doing it - I mean it to be directed to the behavior. Could everyone on the list have SOME consideration for a person offering material? I know it is hard. Many is the time I have wanted to jump right in and say, "Hay, everyone, I have the same material at 60% (or less) of that cost!" or, "Hay, I have one a bit bigger (or smaller), too,"but I don't. It is a rude thing to do to the original advertiser. Let's all have a little more consideration for the other guy. At least wait until his/her sale is concluded before offering up our own stuff. Scientists have confirmed Derek Erstelle's finds are meteorite fragments containing among the rarest and oldest materials in the solar system -- and are potentially worth $100,000. The news couldn't have come at a better time for Erstelle, 47, who has been out of work and on disability for four years. "I'm hoping this will clean things up a bit . . . I could certainly use it," Erstelle said. Martin Beech, who teaches astronomy at the University of Regina, said the rocks are meteorite fragments from the core of an asteroid that was involved in a collision with another asteroid millions of years ago. "Asteroid material is the first material that formed in the solar system," Beech said. He said collectors would eagerly pay $10 per gram for Erstelle's rare find. The two fragments weigh a combined 9.8 kilograms, which could net Erstelle a cool $100,000. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list Get rid of annoying pop-up ads with the new MSN Toolbar FREE! __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

First you quote some harsh (and almost certainly false) criticisms about Richard Norton's work, and then go on to say you don't agree with them, and are going to keep Richard's books after all. Do you realize that your comments go into the Meteorite List archives permanently, where anyone can read them? What is your purpose in posting this material? I doubt it's news to anyone that there is occasionally an incorrect or apocryphal piece of information even in the best-researched book, and that widely-accepted facts can sometimes later be shown to be inaccurate (look at the debate regarding the authenticity of the "Nakhla dog." Richard and Dorothy Norton are among the most well-liked and respected people in the meteorite field, so why would you want to post comments like these -- whether you said them or not? Many collectors became part of the meteorite collecting world specifically because of the Nortons' book "Rocks from Space"; In addition, Richard's articles are widely and regularly published; Dorothy and Richard are both Harvey Award winners; and many List members (including myself) regard them as friends. George CHIMPY Bush trying to control NASA for his own political agenda? And this should be a suprise to anyone? DUBYA is the worst president EVER. This moron has got to go. Also, a vote for Nader is a vote for the CHIMP. Don't waste your vote in November. Randy From: Robert Verish <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Meteorite-list Meteoritecentral <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> CC: Ron Baalke <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [meteorite-list] OT:The White House Coup Against NASA Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2004 21:07:18 -0800 (PST) -- Forward Message -- The White House Coup Against NASA Submitted to Portside February 20, 2004 THE WHITE HOUSE COUP AGAINST NASA By Morton H. Frank A rapid series of events makes evident that the Bush administration has moved to take direct control of NASA in order to serve the administration's own immediate political goals and perhaps also to support military objectives in space. Should the effort succeed, grave damage will be done to the scientific work now going on under NASA's auspices. While NASA overall is closely linked to the military, much significant science is currently supported under its budget. It is this civilian component of NASA that has come under attack. On January 14th at NASA headquarters, George Bush announced a new vision for space exploration. "We will build new ships to carry man forward into the universe, to gain a new foothold on the moon." "[With] the experience and knowledge gained on the moon, "we will take the next steps of space exploration: human missions to Mars and to worlds beyond." The refocusing of NASA for these new tasks was delegated by Bush to the agency's administrator, Sean O'Keefe, a former White House budget official. These goals, he indicated, were to be accomplished on the cheap: All of NASA's activities are to be subordinated to this new space program, with $11 billion to be drawn from the agency's existing five-year budget and Congress expected to provide an additional billion in new money. (1, 2) The next day, O'Keefe announced a reorganization of NASA around the new program. (3) Two days later he shocked the managers of the Hubble space telescope, telling them that there would be no further shuttle visits to maintain it. A shuttle flight planned to install new scientific instruments and replace gyroscopes and batteries in 2005 was now canceled. (4) Without it, the great telescope, whose findings have revolutionized our understanding of the universe and whose sublime photographs of the heavens have inspired millions, is expected to deteriorate and have its life cut short. It has often been said that the Hubble is the most significant telescope since Galileo's own instrument in 1609. As O'Keefe told it, the cancellation was due to safety considerations that had come to light after the shuttle disaster the year before, and was unrelated to NASA's reorganization. As shocking as the cancellation itself was the absence of scientific participation in the decision. The evidence indicates that the cancellation of service to the Hubble was part and parcel of Bush's vision of human space exploration. The story of Bush's big plan has been well told by Andrew Lawler in the pages of Science magazine, the weekly published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Until December of last year, the visionary plan was "a tightly held set of options" prepared by "a small team of White House and federal agency officials." "That team, led by the National Security Council," included "O'Keefe as well as Pentagon and Commerce and State department officials" (5) and presidential science advisor John Marburger (6, 7). Its product was "vetted by Vice President Dick Cheney, Presidential Chief of Staff Andrew Card, and the president's top political adviser, Karl Rove." Here too, there was little or no scientific input into the decision to send people to explore space. Also, in following these preparations Lawler recognized that "any new mission will have to fit into an agency budget [that is] already strained" (5) At a hearing on February 12th, several members of the House Science Committee also expressed skepticism about NASA's ability to support the new project without starving ongoing programs. (8, 9) In his January 14th presentation, Bush named Edward "Pete" Aldridge to chair a commission to think up, within four months, what should actually be done to carry out his vision. Aldridge, a onetime astronaut and former Secretary of the Air Force, currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Lockheed Martin Corp. (10) On February 11th, Pete Aldridge held a public hearing of his hastily assembled commission to try to get some ideas. Among those attending was Norman Augustine, retired chairman of Lockheed Martin and leader of a panel that had once examined the space program for the elder President Bush. Augustine cited

RE: [meteorite-list] ebay listings, steve choner's attempt for a new group
Chirsian and all: The list policy is already clear. Policy#8 states - "Do not post - major advertisement- emails to the list - use a 'sale' link". This policy was later ammended on the list to require the word "AD" in the subject line so that list members would be clear that the email contained an ad. I think the problem arrose when some list members posted their ebay auctions daily, spamming the list. For example one member in particular would say "I have ebay auctions ending in 7 days" then "I have ebay auctions ending in 6 days", then "I have ebay auctions ending in 5 days", etc etc. You get the idea. Members won't even quit fighting and using vulgar language on this list which is a much much bigger problem than theoccasional ebay ad announcement. As long as the word "AD" appears in the subject, I do not see a problem as this allows all list members to decide for themselves if they wish to open an "AD" email. Randy From: "Ing. Christian ANGER" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [meteorite-list] ebay listings, steve choner's attempt for a new group Date: Sun, 14 Dec 2003 13:33:17 +0100 Hi list, Hi Steve ! I think the idea to keep ebay announcements off this list has died. Still many members like Michel Franco (sorry Michel but you are just only ONE example for what I want to say becuase you recently did it) have not accepted Steve's idea. So I don't know why I (or the others) should not make any announcements for my (or their) ebay auctions in future again. Nobody cared about except very few members like Mike Farmer, Dean Bessey, Matteo Chinellato, Phillipe Thomas, Me and two or three others, I THINK WE DID NOT REACH A NUMBER OF 10 OF MEMBERS who accepted this and now these members have a disadvantage as they did not post to the list since the ebay-group Steve created exists!! So I don't want to be one of these two who accepts the disadvantage of not posting ebay announcements to the REAL meteorite-list as long as others ignore not posting ebay announcements. We (all the members of this list) should find a solution. To decide if announcements for ebay auctions are possible for ALL or NOT. Maybe somebody has a solution for making a poll to let the members decide. Art Jones, a question to you as first man of the list : Is it possible to make a poll in this subject ? I saw on different yahoo-lists that there are polls possible but I am not aware how to make this here. Could you find a soultion ? I found the web site that Matteo mentioned offensive because it is taking the p--- out of someone based on the way they look or what they write or say. In my humble opinion good humour is no excuse for bad taste, no matter how well it is done. The sort of humour I enjoy is Dave's story about his last meteorite hunt, with its gentle irony and self deprecatory humour. I don't agree with making fun of other people, particularly in a public forum like the internet. To me the web site concerned represents anonymous hate mail. I haven't read the followups to my post, but I would be interested to know if anyone has owned up to authoring the site. Every time there is some kind of flare up on the list, I get phone calls from collectors asking to be dropped from my customer list (and from the number of long term collectors I no longer hear from I suspect many more are taking a more passive route to the same ends). When I ask why, they have all said the same thing; "I am no longer collecting meteorites". They tend to say that it is no longer fun or enjoyable. When pressed further, they have pointed to the list for their new found distaste of meteorites. While this may be well and fine for some of us, as often these people also want to liquidate their collections, it bodes the decline of the hobby. Let's look at this "hobby" thing. Some of you may find it distasteful that I'm putting meteorites in this realm. But, what is a hobby really about? It generally is something (almost anything - mountain climbing and flying ultra-lights are a couple of mine) that brings relaxation or expands your mind to consider other things (meteorites fit more into this aspect). Generally it is something that takes your mind off of the day to day troubles of the real world. Let us now consider how "the list" might be affecting this. The average person has plenty to worry about; politics and headaches at work (or more common lately, whether they'll even have a job next month), car troubles, problems with some neighbors, their kids, schools, etc. Life these days is often fast paced and difficult. Now suppose our "average collector" comes home from a long difficult day at work and finds plenty headaches (the car is damaged, junior is failing math, etc.) waiting there. After awhile our collector goes off to the computer for a little escape to feel more in contact with their hobby (and less with the real world). How long do you suppose this person will last as a collector if, when he turns on his computer, all he gets is the evils of the real world dumped in his lap, and often in a more magnified form then they would likely ever experience in the real world (it's strange, but I've observed some of the most vicious people behind a computer a computer key board are some of the funniest, nicest people you could meet in person)? Chances are, at the point they find that their hobby seems to be adding to their stress instead of reducing it, they will move onto greener pastures. I know, many of you are thinking right now B.S.. Anybody who is on the list is a grown person and likely a seasoned collector, so they can handle these mental assaults. My response is Wrong! Though the people who regularly post to the list may be so, a fair

Here is an idea.. Reputable retailers (like at the mall) will give you a reduction in price ifan item you buy goes on sale within a reasonable amount of time. Why wouldn't this work for meteorite dealers? Example If I sell XXX meteorite this week for $100- per gram and then put it on sale next week for $50- per gram, I give a partial refund to everyone who bought it from me the first week. Date: Wed, 08 Oct 2003 10:12:05 -0700 Michael, Why don't I "PRAISE some of the CHEAPEST prices around?" Read my article this month in METEORITE TIMES. If you read that and STILL can't figure out why I don't "PRAISE some of the CHEAPEST prices around?" Let me make it clear right here: When you offer merchandise for a given price, then offer the same material later for less - then, if you don't sell all of it at that price, you offer it later for even less - over and over and over, as you do, Michael, you create several effects that go far beyond your personal reality. For one thing, you give buyers the message they should never buy now, wait, and the price will go down (however, this only badly hurts all dealers, not necessarily the collectors.). However, you ALSO burn ALL your own customers who paid more for this material when you originally offered it. I buy something from you for $3.50/g and 2 weeks later you drop the price to $1.75/g - I feel RIPPED OFF. (perhaps you STILL don't get this, despite doing this to all of us who invested heavily in Wagon Wheel - which you, then proceeded to GIVE AWAY. Those of us in for $3.50 a gram felt really burned and I, for one, told you that strait to your face and I KNOW several others who did as well.) ALSO, when you do this, there is NO STABILITY in the meteorite market. Low prices, I am all for it. My collection has never been "gaining weight" so fast. I can make just as much money dealing low priced material as high priced material. No problem. It is the instability that TOTALLY destabilizes everything It really doesn't matter (on a market level) whether meteorites are "cheap" or "expensive" - of course, as a collector, I prefer them cheap - but as a dealer, I don't care one way or the other. WHAT I DO CARE ABOUT IS STABILITY. Without it, neither collectors OR dealers can conduct business in a sane manor. Your CONSTANT "fire sales" followed by even greater fire sales undermine that stability entirely. No one can reckon the "value" of material, because the prices are running all over the board. But you get your cash in hand NOW and that is all you care about. So, Michael, THAT is why I don't "praise some of the cheapest prices around." Get it? Or, is it STILL too subtle for you? I resent it as a collector and I resent it as a dealer. The 250-gm rock piece that holds the promise of unravelling the many mysteries of solar system, is a part of the meteorite that landed in Orissa on September 27, and has been brought here by a team of PRL scientists. Although the scientists here are not sure of the age of the rock at the moment, looking at the chondrules (small rounded structures on the rock), they say it appears to be part of some of the most primitive material in space. Scientists say since the rock is radioactive, tests can reveal its age and its detailed study will help them infer what happened in the solar system way back. "This rock (meteorite) is no ordinary piece of stone, as it has in it imprints of the changes that have taken place in the space during the last 4.6 billion years," said a scientist from PRL who visited Orissa. PRL scientists say the iron veins in the rock suggest that after its formation, the rock was subjected to intense heat, following which iron must have flowed into the cracks. A meteorite is a piece of extra-terrestrial solid mass that has survived atmospheric friction and landed on earth. Scientists say when these pieces of extra-terrestrial rocks orbiting the solar system collide with each other, they leave their orbits and travel through earth's atmosphere to land on earth. Usually, a major chunk of the rocks burn during their passage, but whatever matter survive the friction and reach the earth are mines of information. Scientists at PRL say these "meteoric rains" are very important as they provide us with "free samples" of rocks from space. PRL scientists said the rock will be a subject of intense study to find out details about its mineralogy, composition, history and various other factors. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list Instant message with integrated webcam using MSN Messenger 6.0. I have been in business 4 years and I ship 2000+ items a year and ALL of them are very fragile. I have never had a single customer have a problem with any of the 29 damaged items they have had. Everyone has collected their claim. There are something's I do to ensure that they do not have a problem. I use only new boxes, USPS boxes when possible. I use only USPS approved materials to pack...newsprint is not approved. I use the proper size box and lots of foam bubblewrap and peanut foam. When a problem occurs and there have only been 29 because I keep track. The procedure is simple and is as follows: Customer contacts me I tell them they need to KEEP all of the materials and box...Throw out nothing. I print out their invoice, their proof of payment and a copy of the auction page. I have the USPS Claim forms here, I fill in my part of the form as the seller and sign it. I put the claim form, the print outs and the POSTMARKED insurance receipt in an envelope and mail it to the customer. When they receive my envelope, they take it and the item in the box it came in with the packing materials to their local post office. Generally it will take 15 minutes for the clerk to complete the claim and then 10 days to receive the check. NONE of my customers ever received one cent less than they paid for their items. THERE ARE PRINTED approved packing material lists available from the post office...I know because I am a post office, I have a USPS Postal License and am approved to print my own postage and to accept items for shipping from third parties. NOW if you want to talk about the private sector...lets do that. In 4 years I have had to file suit in court against Federal Express 3 times in order for them to pay any insurance claim on 5 out of 6 damaged items. They are matters of public record and I can send you the case numbers. FedEx once took a wooden magazine rack that had been scratched during shipment when the box was pierced by their machinery. They had the item 4 months and reduced it to kindling, completely destroying the item. All they were supposed to do is inspect it. It took 2 trips to court before they finally paid my customer. I have 3 additional trips to court to file suits before they finally decided to pay on other claims. FedEx simply does not cover any items over $100.00 in value even though they will allow you to insure them for up to $500.00. You have to prove in court that they were negligent in their handling and that if the negligence had not occured the item would have not been otherwise damaged during normal shipping. That was how I won. I also refer you to FedEx.com at http://www.fedex.com/us/services/termsandconditions/ground/liabilitylimits.html?link=4 They do not cover and are not liable for any item on their list which is the following: 1.. Re: [meteorite-list] Shirokovsky
I think at this time I will just hold on to my piece of Shirokovsky. Seems like the smart thing to do while this all gets sorted out. A piece of Shirokovsky could be a very sought after sample in years to come, depending on the outcome of this controversy. Randy From: "Laurie Kallis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [meteorite-list] Shirokovsky Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2003 11:38:49 -0400 First, let me apologize for the length of this posting. We have been involved with the distribution of Shirokovsky Meteorite since family made the recovery last year. Shirokovskymeteorite.com is our website. Since questions of the meteorite's authenticity were raised we have refrained from making sales and have added a clause to that effect to our webiste. One of the members of the Russian group who made the recovery has written in response to the the questions of authenticity and the accusations. We have translated his response and pasted it into the body of this email. This same article will soon be added to the website. Specimens, properly prepared specimens, are currently being retested in St. Petersburg. Until then So,what on Earth is it? Search Expeditions for the Ugleuralsky (Shirokovsky) Meteorite: 2000-2003 What distinguished the search expeditions then known as the Ugleuralsky meteorite expeditions from other contemporary meteoritic expeditions was their official tone: the preparation under the auspices of the Russian Geographical Society and the involvement of mass media. Thirty people, not counting the local volunteers and Shirokovsky Power Station staff, participated in the four search expeditions that took place between 2000 and 2003. First hand witnesses of the meteorite fall who still live in the Shirokovsky village, those who came to the hole in the ice after experiencing the flash of light and the sound effect in 1956, were thoroughly questioned. Their recollections of the location of the point of impact coincided with the topographic tyings to the terrain reported by the USSR Sverdlovsk Academy of Science expedition carried out in 1956, immediately after the fall. A detailed relief map of the reservoir bottom supplied by the board of the Shirokovsky Power Station, in concordance with the opinions of specialists in ballistics, determined the extent of the search area. The search proved more difficult than expected because constant removal of sunken timber logs from the reservoir bottom over the years had dispersed the meteorite fragments over a much larger area than was originally anticipated. Eventually, with the help of a metal detector, our group recovered approximately 150 kg of samples. Encountering Difficulties The friendliness shown by the local population was inversely proportional to the growing awareness of the potential value of the possible find. A representative of the local Family, paid us a visit by jeep, showing a great but vaguely formulated interest in our diving activities. After our diving group departed in late spring, scientists from the city of Sverdlovsk, led by professor Grokhovsky, arrived with their own group of divers who risked their lives on weakened ice that had developed cracks and was no longer safe to walk on in the hope of locating any meteoritic substance missed by our group. We appealed to the Committee for Meteorites at the Vernadsky Institute to have samples of the Shirokovsky specimens tested. Our appeal was rejected on the grounds that they had no information about the Ugleuralsky meteorite fall, despite a number of scientific and media reports dating back to 1956. Sampling services and subsequent registration were offered by enthusiast A. Milanovsky (http://meteorites.narod.ru), but our group was not looking for easy ways. We planned to have the Shirokovsky samples tested and registered as a meteorite in another country. We sent a representative to the Girorne Meteoritic Fair in Germany where he met people from the same CMET who originally rejected our appeal to have the samples tested. This time, they convinced our representative that it would be patriotic to carry out the research and register the meteorite in Russia. Defining a Meteorite Further developments in our quest to have Shirokovsky registered as a meteorite can serve as a precedent for future discussions on the topic what should be considered a meteorite?. Historically, the system of identification and registration of meteorites first presumes that a sample is either of terrestrial origin or artificial. To prevent the Committee on Meteorites from being transformed into the mining branch, they quickly sift out the rubbish, by searching for specific features defined by a system of identification that follows existing theories of the formation of the universe. Logically, the samples treated most skeptically are those submitted without genealogy, those that have no

A meteorite landed in the Beaufort resident's back yard at about 3:40 a.m. "I was only about 15 feet away from it when it came down," said Morris. "It had a smoky white tail." Morris said small glowing flames dropped from it as it came down and it made a loud popping sound before hitting the ground. It didn't leave a depression, and she was able to pick up several pieces. Morris plans on keeping the few extraterrestrial pieces. While reports like Morris' do come in on occasion, they usually aren't actual meteorites, said Christina Lacey, a professor at the University of South Carolina's physics and astronomy department. "I've never heard of (the reports) panning out," Lacey said. "Certainly, meteorites do hit the Earth." Nothing unusual was detected by the radar at the air station Monday morning, said Master Sgt. Terrance Peck, public affairs chief for Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. Officials at the National Weather Service in Charleston said a meteorite would be moving too fast for them to track. What a meteorite is made of is one of the factors that determines whether it makes it to the Earth's surface. Lacey said meteorites coming from passing comets, which are composed of ice, usually burn up, while iron-based meteorites that come from asteroids might make it to the surface. Meteorites usually are made of melted minerals with some containing iron-nickel alloys. "Most meteorites tend to be very simple" in composition, Lacey said. "Most meteorites do land in water." According to the National Air and Space Administration's Web site, each day as many as 4 billion meteoroids, most minuscule in size, enter Earth's atmosphere. Most of these meteors burn up from atmospheric friction and never reach the ground. The angle at which the meteoroid enters the planet's atmosphere can also determine whether it breaks up, skips back into space or explodes. Lacey said rarely do man-made meteorites make it to Earth, and when they do it's usually over water. If someone does recover something they think is a meteorite, Lacey said geologists can usually tell whether it's from outer space or not. "You could talk to the geology department at Clemson, the University of South Carolina or the College of Charleston and they could identify it," Lacey said. "A lot of times they can do it just by looking at it." Morris said she doesn't plan on doing anything like that, though she does admit it's somewhat unbelievable. "I just wish I had a video camera at the time," she said. "Without a movie, it's like no one believes you." Hello Michael and All, When I was doing research on my article about Zag for Meteorite Magazine several years ago, I found the first offering of it was at $18 per gram (if I remember correctly). The skyward shot in price was more a reaction to the science and its similarity to the unobtainable Monahans, TX chondrite. There are always risks when purchasing meteorites, Sahara or not. Even some of the more notable US meteorite finds have yielded many more kilograms years after the initial discovery. On the third side of this coin is the possibility that not all of the fall is of the quality that Rob and Dean were able to photograph. Examples of this phenomena include Kora Korrabes, Portales Valley, and even Zag. There were vastly different regions within the meteorite making numbers like TKW and price per gram less important. One piece might be a dud, while another is stunning. My suggestion is to buy out of the pure excitement of collecting. You win some, you loose some. But in the end, it should all be fun. Right? Ok, I have to call you on your last statement below. If you are happy with a quick 50% profit then why are you charging $15- per gram on this new meteorite when you probably only have a couple of dollars into it? Is it because you want to strike quickly and make a big profit before other dealers can bring it to market at a reasonable price? Inquiring minds want to know why the big profit % on this one and small profit% on the CR2. What is motivating your high markup on this meteorite? So, based on your argument, everytime Dave Andrews searches the Holbrook strewnfield and finds an obvious Holbrook, that diminishes the value of all other "legitimate" Holbrooks.Should thisflawed argument hold true for every other strewnfield on earth.?
