I had the same problem until I started front loading my units with the read
alouds. I spend a couple of days at the beginning of the unit reading the books
for the unit. This was so helpful and efficient in making my lessons mini.

Check out Read Works . It has the lessons and assessments for the type of
skills you're looking for. And, like you, we blend reading strategies and units
of study with the traditional reading skills. I select 3-4 skills I want to
focus on during a term and weave those lessons in during my units
Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes - easier read, but big topic. Chapter book
but only 50 pages or so.

For reading levels, I recommend using the assessments on the Teachers
College Reading and Writing Project website. You can download them for free.
They are A-Z levels that assess both fluency and comprehension. It's a good
one!

as much as it is about craft. It seems silly to give a 10 year old a brand

Frank's books are geared for older readers, but you might get some value for
them. For 1st grade, Serafini might not be the best. He's great for 3rd and
