Forest was one of the good ones. He was enthused about every bird he saw. We
exchanged greetings now and then by email, since I had not seen him for several
years. I looked forward to our brief hellos. I'll miss him.

At 92 degrees today was cool compared to the 109 degrees we had in Nashville,
TN, last weekend.
I ventured out to find some of the interesting birds recently reported in the
South Metro.
Around noon I found the common gallinule at the Dakota County 180th St. Marsh,

over 40,000 individuals.
Forest wrote articles for the Loon. He had more published on birds than on

Back when the Board of MOU had representatives frin associated local bird
clubs, Forest was a regular representative of his local. His wife would attend

Forest was a bird bander for a LOT of years. I don't know all the facts but
about two years ago, while rescue crews were searching the Cannon River for a
drowning victim, one member found the carcass of a recently deceased Barred Owl
which Forest had banded as an owlet back in the 80's. They det
Forest was the 20th President of the MOU in 1961 and 1962. He was one of
the first to serve 2 years. Since that time serving 2 years is more common
but it wasn't in those days. We also remember that he had spent some time
bird banding but somebody else will have to fill us in on that.

I am sorry to hear about Forest's passing. He was an avid birder, and I
enjoyed my conversations with him when I ran into him out in the field.
I'm sure he is working on his heaven bird list as we speak.

There is a male hanging around Randolph Industrial Park in Southern Dakota
County. I've seen that one repeatedly.
Checking my records, I had 6 reports of them in 5 counties this Spring.
Since Summer I've had 4 reports, all in different counties.
So I've seen NOHAs in 8 different counties this ye
As far as my personal Harrier sitings, I've only ever seen a Harrier once
in Hennepin County last fall, but I had two sitings of Harriers this spring

Hi everyone,
Adding to Rev. Debra's posting regarding Forest, he could be a little
curmudgeonly at times and I'm sure that there are a few "Forest stories" that
birders could share, but I've never met anyone as passionate about birding than
Forest was! I met Forest in the winter of 2002/2003 w

At 9:45 am today Bill Litkey spotted one of the two reported Common Gallinules
on the east 180th St. pond.
We were looking north from the road to the closest grassy area in the pond,
east of the small hill and pull-out. The bird was foraging in front of the
shore, swimming into the grass, an
Has anyone else noted a dearth of harriers this year? Seeing one a month, if
