After nine years in Kansas, moved back to Minnesota yesterday. Birded Fish
Lake from 11:00-12:30 or so, with ~50 species, including 11 warblers. Enjoyed
first Canada Warblers & Golden-winged of the year.

Perhaps
Someone should start an appreciation equivalent of e-bird - perhaps called
a-bird - that would hold stories, testimonials, poetry, photography etc. from
birding experiences contemplation.
Such might provide balance to the scientific listing aspects to our hobby.

Has anyone done significant song decline research across different species as
summer progresses?
Most birders notice less song as summer progresses, but it would be interesting
to know which species grow quiet, which become infrequent, and which continue,
graphed against time.

Nate returned this evening, and added two Hudsonian Godwits, a Marbled Godwit
and a Willet. With the addition of a Solitary, we had 19 shorebird species
there on the day.
The avocet is still present, center of the front ponds, with the godwits.

17 warblers today, 16 on Blue Hill Trail. Highlights were Cerulean and
Audubon's Yellow-rumped. Philadelphia Vireo present as well.

Waves of warblers overhead at Sherburne Refuge, Blue Hill Trail. Most are
Yellow-rumped, but nine species so far, and good Black-throated Green
representation in mix.

Best concentration of waterfowl in Sherburne NWR area are on the ag ponds at
the CR 3 23 intersection. 15 species yesterday today.

First flying signs of spring - Sandhill Cranes a Merlin - increased numbers
of siskins, robins, waxwings - Bald Eagles singing - insects low over snow.

Strange occurrence - sitting here in central MN - adding Red Crossbills to my
year list today means I have all the hard finches (grosbeaks, redpolls,
crossbills) but not House - Purple - or Pine Siskins on my year list yet.

Stopped at a gas station in nowhere WI, have listened to a Peewee, Robin
House Sparrow - all from Starlings' mouths. Wonder how many species they can

Interesting Red-tailed Hawk on CR 3, so red on the sides of its chest that I
initially thought was Red-shouldered. However, it was perched next to an
obvious Red-tailed, which would have made for an unusual couple.

Cackler was amidst dozens of Canadas on the second sewage pond; Bohemian was in
the woods trail next to the Rum River, over top of brown Back to Rec Park
sign, about 40 minutes walk in from parking lot.

Nope.

An apparent adult non-breeding Thayer's Gull is hanging out with Herrings,
Ring-billed and Bonaparte's in Willow Bay, west side of Mille Lacs Lake,
northern Mille Lacs County on 169. My only concern is head shape, not round

I monitor Wisconsin's bird list, since I both spend time there and find their
migration informational about ours.
Evening Grosbeaks were reported today in Waupaca, which is roughly parallel to
my area (50 miles north of the Cities). Check those feeders, keep ears open!

13 sparrow species in Sherburne Refuge this morning. Best were a LeConte's
Henslow's on the Auto Tour, 1/2 mile past the kiosk/bathrooms near the
entrance.

I wish to be careful, but believe I had a first year female Black-throated Blue
Warbler in Kathio State Park behind the horse trails building.
The light shoulder patch drew my attention, followed by the yellow washed chest
and characteristic eye area markings.
Males are so much easier.

in Sherburne NWR.
For butterfliers, we are buried in Dainty Sulphurs at the moment, unusual here.

There could have been more warbler species, last waves were upper canopy, in a
hurry, against a white sky at stomach-grumbling lunch time.

Bay-breasted, Canada on Blue Hill, but only five total warblers.
Good mix of butterflies, 10 species.

Two Upland Sandpipers along Mille Lacs 5, just north of 110th, few miles south
of Milaca. Check hay bales.
Walked Milaca Hiking Trials, quiet for birding, good butterflying including a
surprising Western White.

Visited Horicon Marsh while taking care of mom in Wisconsin. Thoroughly
enjoyed the Black-necked Stilts, up to 22 are being seen.
King Rail YC Night Heron were also present.
