Road, I saw a single, White Pelican fly over the highway.
For whatever reason, it seems as though we have a very good volume of birds
coming through this Fall in general.

This morning, I had a RH Woodpecker in my yard, the first I have observed in my
yard since we moved to this location (2000). We are two miles from Highway 61,
off of the Homestead Road, on the end of the west branch of Wildwood.

I spotted a Cackling Goose in the Two Harbors cemetery (South side of 7th
avenue, just past the first stop light, when entering town from the south.)
while on my noon walk today. It was amongst a flock of Canadas, totaling about
40 birds.

A Northern Shrike just flew on our deck, apparently targeting the feeding
Chickadees. He was not successful, but scared the hell out of a Chickadee, who
sat frozen in the feeder for at least 5 minutes afterwards.

I saw a Sandhill Crane in my field yesterday evening. Red Winged Blackbirds
have been coming in over the last week and Woodcock have been peenting and
doing their aerial displays the past two nights. A flock of Pine Siskins have
been hitting the feeder pretty hard.

My guess is a Emden/African Goose hybrid. African geese have that dark stripe
down the back of the neck. The white face would point to the Emden, which were
originally derived from the Graylag.

I was mowing my field yesterday and witnessed HUGE numbers of warblers...mostly
Yellow Rumps. Unfortunately, many are getting killed along highway 61 and other
roads along the North Shore. I also saw large numbers of Robins and Turkey
Vultures, along with a few Bald Eagles.

Yesterday afternoon, about 4:15, I had a Great Egret drop in my field and
ponds. The resident pair of Canada Geese were none too happy though and
harassed the bird. I did not see it later in the evening or this morning. This
is only the second time I have seen one on my property.

My guess would be a ring neck duck although they are smaller than a mallard.
Otherwise, it could be a blue Swedish, domestic duck (derived from the
mallard). The smaller variety can fly and are known to hang with Mallards. They
are commonly found in the Cities.
