[mou-net] osprey in Roseville
Regarding the questions about the Osprey in Roseville. The goose that laid eggs in that nest has vacated the nesting pole. The Ospreys have laid their eggs on another nest on some ballfield lights. They will probably not return to the nest on County Road C2 this year, unless their other nest fails, but who knows what will happen next year. I believe this male has claimed both these nests as his territory, so we will see if he defends the nest on C2. Its always interesting! [mou-net] Edina Ospreys
The Edina Ospreys on the new Creek Valley Nest ( female from the old freeway light nest) have laid their first egg. It remains to be seen if it is fertile. We will have to wait about 39 days to see. I know some of you are interested in this pair of Ospreys. [mou-net] Osprey Watch
I read with interest the posting about the Osprey Watch program at Wm and Mary College in Virginia. We have a local organization with a similar name “Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch” which is dedicated to monitoring all nests in the 8 county metro area surrounding Minneapolis and St Paul. We are a growing group of passionate people who are interested in learning more about this magnificent raptor, monitoring the population expansion, and studying their productivity and behaviors! We share the concerns of the worldwide project regarding contaminants, climate change and fish depletion and therefore we are monitoring ALL known nests for an accurate productivity study as well as behavioral studies. Ospreys are an indicator species that indicate much about the environmental health of our community and therefore we believe it is important to continue this local study which began in 1984. (Three Rivers Park District announced in January that they were reducing their research and banding to just 1/3 of the nests in the metro). We always need help monitoring all the nests and if you are interested please contact us. We also need the public’s help in reporting new nests to us. Contact us at osprey...@att.net. You can find us on Facebook now too! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Twin-Cities-Metro-Osprey-Watch/218968924786696?ref=ts Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] osprey and compost
Interesting observations regarding the Osprey and compost at Poplar Lake. Several of us have observed that behavior there also. I do not think it is the heat they are seeking, but they are using that material to pack between the sticks to make a more solid floor to their nest. Other Ospreys use wet material from the lake shore, clumps of mud and grass. Sometimes this rich material contains seeds that grow, creating quite a garden up there! How green of those Ospreys to use recycled nest material! Vanessa Greene Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch osprey...@att.net ospreywatch.blogspot.com now on Facebook too! [mou-net] eagles copulating
In response to the person that observed copulation behavior with Bald Eagles in White Bear... I observed similar behavior with a pair of Bald Eagles in Edina last week, tho it was not a successful copulation, only an attempt by the male which was refused by the female. Its courting season! [mou-net] Ospreys
RE:Local Ospreys. The Freeway Osprey nest has actually been occupied for several days and there has already been an interesting change in the identities of the birds there. Always interesting! This is my 17th year of behavioral and productivity research on Ospreys and if anyone would like to be involved with this research, learn about osprey behavior, I still need some volunteer monitors to assist me. Contact me if you are interested. I would deeply appreciate it if the birders out there would let me know if they see any new osprey nests being built. Thanks so much! [mou-net] regarding Osprey nest on Freeway
So Sorry Folks...the Osprey nest I was referring to is on the lights at the intersection of 169 / 62 in the metro area. ( southeast cloverleaf). I apologize for not being clearer. It has been there since 2005. Thanks for all the interest! Vanessa Greene Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Roseville Osprey
Regarding the osprey nest in Roseville with the goose. Clearly that goose is incubating eggs...that is why no one can dislodge her. It is not totally unusual and it has happened before in the metro area tho with a less attached goose. A goose was on another nest a few years ago and the osprey did manage to chase her off, and unbeknownst to us, she left behind an egg. When the osprey laid their eggs and incubated them, they also hatched a gosling. Since Geese are precocial and osprey are altricial, it did not have a happy ending. The osprey were totally non aggressive towards the visitor and tried to feed it fish, but it needed someone to lead it to its food so it could feed itself. After about 4 days the gosling disappeared...either starved or died from dehydration or jumped off the nest platform. I searched for the ospreys today but did not find them anywhere. [mou-net] Osprey are returning
Several ospreys have been seen returning to their nests in the past few days in the metro area! They have been slower to return this year as a result of the snow and frozen lakes. With many lakes still frozen we expect we might see them sporadically as they check their territories and then seek open waters to fish. The Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch is monitoring all known nests in the 8 county area and we would greatly appreciate reports of new nests or sightings! We are a passionate group of osprey lovers that are dedicated to research, rescues and education. We have had many osprey nests fail this year and adults have left their nests. They often build frustration nests after a failure and I am requesting that anyone who sees new nests popping up, or adult ospreys carrying sticks in the eight county metro area, to please report this activity to Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch so we can identify these birds and locate new nest sites as part of our ongoing research. [mou-net] Osprey season has begun!
Osprey season in Minnesota has officially begun! I visited 12 nests today and found Ospreys on four of them, with a pair at one nest. So this is my annual plea for people to please report any new Osprey nests or Osprey activity to Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch. We are trying to monitor all known nests in the eight county metro area surrounding Minneapolis and St Paul. In 2015 we gathered data at 110 known nests in the metro area, with 75 of those nests successfully fledging at least one chick! We also always need help watching over these nests if anyone would like to become a volunteer nest monitor and visit a nest weekly thru the breeding season, please contact Vanessa Greene at osprey.mn@ gmail.com.
