In response to the arguments about other development:
Several poor decisions (subsidizing the Target HQ, Block E, etc) do not justify more poor decisions (Stadia). We (Mpls voters) had a chance to punish those who made the first set of bad decisions, and did so. We will also do that, I predict,
Let me say at the outset that I simply do not want a new stadium. Anywhere in Minnesota. Frankly, I don't even think that a new stadium built with private money will help. Period.
The problem is that the Twins are located in a state that has a high degree of egalitarian principles. That means
I can't think of a worse investment this coming biennium than a stadium for the Twins. We have a worsening state budget shortfall, a governor who will be elected with no more than 40% of the vote, and therefore no mandate, and people want a publicly funded stadium? And where does the figure that a
The whole point of the DFL endorsement process was and is to do exactly what Michelle objects to. It is to stifle all but the endorsed candidates.
There are good reasons for this, in the present, in the past, and specifically in Minneapolis' past.
Until relatively recently, Republicans were a
With respect to your point about the decade being more than half over before the new ward lines take effect:
If a lawsuit is filed for new elections in 2003 based on a failure of the wards in the past election to provide equal representation on the grounds of one person, one vote, I believe it

Soon to be the 8th Ward??
If a council member was elected from a ward that was unconstitutional in that it violated the one person one vote provisions, then yes, I would expect that a lawsuit to hold new elections would be successful. While there is a state law that says that the mere fact that a council member is drawn

Oh, about three pounds.

(And yes, that page is a hoot!)
Although I may not be able to attend these redistricting meetings during the legislative session or thereafter as I teach a class on the nights most of these meetings are scheduled, I will try to alert the list to known facts from other reliable sources as we go along.

I'm glad people are awake (and perspicacious) enough to comment on this thread!
Given the fact that all things touched by the official process are public data to be retained forever, that might be a chilling effect, which is why I have continued, as a totally private person, to inform and comment
Sid Hartman scoops Dane Smith, Bob Whereatt and Eric Eskola on legislative retirements??? Yikes!!! What is the world coming to? Next we'll see political news in the business pages--- oh , yeah, Enron.

1) The Mpls Redistricting Commission met again last night
2) Still no media. Attendance by noncommissioner, nonstaff persons nearly nonexistent
(myself, Peter Wagenius-probably counts as staff as he is from the Mayor's office- and
two Republican gentlemen)
3) Commission adopted a retention

(I'll get the hang of this someday!)
Folks,
Let's remember that the courts WILL order an election in 2003 after the redistricting should the redistricting create a certain level of change in representation ( I think it is 5 percent), which appears to be unavoidable given the different population shifts within the city. I see this as
Thank you for acknowledging my 'rant.'
In point of fact, in New York, the Conservative party elected Senator James
Buckley (brother of William F. Buckley, Jr.), who defeated the incumbent
Senator, Charles Goodell (Republican) and a Democrat, in 1970 (I think it was
Liz Holtzman). As for the
I 'm afraid that this last reply in the thread illustrates the problem. The
Green Party is NOT affiliated with the left wing of the DFL. You are either
a Green Party member or a DFLer. (see the text cited by Mr. Melendez)
THE GREEN PARTY IS A SEPARATE PARTY IN COMPETITION WITH THE DFL.
There is a place that already has that. It's called Saint Paul..

The point of the endorsement process is that if there is an endorsement, then
no other candidate of the party is to proceed to the primary.
If you don't think a candidate is good enough to merit that, then don't
endorse.
That may or may not happen in any of the conventions this year.
