Maybe your ~/.muttrc file is for the development version of
mutt such as the version-numbers = 0.96.3[i]
You have to use the ~/.muttrc files for the stable version
0.95.x[i] or 1.0pre*.

looking inside the executable with 'strings' gives "libncurses.so.4",
so I suppose it's ncurses.
You are be absolutely sure if you use 'mutt -v' and send us
