[MLO] MLO 6

2023-03-20 Thread pottster
Hi Andrey and Team. Delighted to have just purchased an upgrade to MLO 6
and support you in some small way. You guys are an inspiration in a
troubled world. I hope you stay safe and continue to develop a product
which has been Organizing MyLife since 2010.

By the way, in 2015, I asked for sounds on task completion. Glad you got
around to it eventually! 

Re: [MLO] Re: What Do Y'all Use for Notes

2021-03-07 Thread pottster
Great summary Christoph. I'd add a category of tool for capturing web
content for research, reference, read later etc - and for this category I
think Evernote is still a strong frontrunner. I've settled on Obsidian too
- for note taking where I'm creating, commenting on, or linking, notes. The
Obsidian graphing capabilitites are creating a whole new area of
visualising ideas and thoughts and how they connect. It will be interesting
to see where it leads.

[MLO] Re: Is there a way to print out the Hot Key list?

2018-10-01 Thread pottster
The default hot keys are listed in the MLO user guide available from the
website at https://www.mylifeorganized.net/support.shtml#windows

If you have customized any of the hotkeys the amended list is found within
the app at Tools/Options/General Applications Options/Hotkeys. This list is
in a scrolling window so you would need to use a screen capture tool like
SnagIt or FastStone Capture to capture the full list via autoscroll since
normal text selection methods don't work.

Good luck!

[MLO] Re: TextExpander or other text shortcuts?

2017-10-19 Thread pottster
Hi Mark.

MLO has configurable hotkeys built in for Date and Time
(Tools>Options>General Application Options>Hotkeys). The notes area
supports use of any text replacement tool such as TextExpander,
PhraseExpress or AutoHotkey. You could also link in the notes area to a log
file e.g. a notepad .log file which automatically adds date and time when
you open it.

[MLO] Re: a keyboard hotkey I can't assign, please help

2017-09-26 Thread pottster
Hi Olivier,

Your AutoHotkey isn't quite right but there is a more basic issue here.
Normally, AutoHotkey would allow you to remap this shortcut but I think
that Ctrl+Down is hard coded in MLO. It may be possible to change in the
registry but you'd have to ask support. I suggest you contact support for
options. Post again if you make progress and need an AutoHotkey script.

[MLO] Re: Rapid Task Entry for =tofld for folders with whitespace in the name not working?

2017-03-15 Thread pottster
Hi Brian,

Not sure whether it's a bug or just the way it's been implemented. In any
case, my suggestion would be to rename the folder without whitespace if
parsing is important to you e.g. Work-Misc-Actions.

By the way, enclosing in double quotes in MLO parsing *excludes* the
contained text from parsing.

[With all the above keep tapping =/- keys to keep adding/reducing]

Display the Due Date column and right on the task due date for a much more

[MLO] Re: How can I configure the font in the Search results?

2016-10-03 Thread pottster
Hi Dan,

I believe the Search dialog uses system level fonts so not configurable
within MLO. It looks from your screenshot like you might be using Linux.
Not sure what your options are within Linux for system fonts and I'm
guessing you're using Wine to run MLO so it may be problematic anyway. One
option in Windows is to use the built in screen magnifier accessibility
tool - I'm sure there will be a Linux equivalent. For day to day use though
this probably wouldn't be practical.

Personally, I maintain a dedicated search tab/view for the whole outline
and use the Text filter section in the Filter Pane. That way I get results
in the Outline (using the Outline font). The next desktop version of MLO is
due for a UI overhaul so, hopefully, we'll see some improvement in this
area.

Re: [MLO] Chronology in notes

2016-09-30 Thread pottster

Many thanks for the responses. Interesting to hear your thoughts and really
helpful for clarifying my own thinking.

For my purposes, I've come to the conclusion that I will use both
approaches. At least now I've thought about it I can say it's a conscious
decision.

If I'm keeping a chronological sequence of notes I realise I need to ask
myself why I'm doing it and that will guide me about which approach to take
for a particular task. Some examples: -

Tracking status of a finite process - Reverse
Recording an exchange for future use with third party (complaint,
justifying decisions etc) - Chronological
For future review for performance or improvement - Chronological
Problem solving - Reverse
Research and information gathering - Reverse
Delegated tasks - Reverse

When having a quick Google about the topic I found this

 thread
interesting. Loved the Kierkegaard quote - 'Life can only be understood
backwards; but it must be lived forwards. Sums the dilemma up nicely. One
idea touched upon was to list Chronologically but also have the very latest
entry at the top. I might experiment with that if I can automate it via
AutoHotKey.

I'm sure there is no "right" answer to this one. The Sort
Ascending/Descending toggle button on so much software is probably there
for a good reason!

Thanks again.

[MLO] Chronology in notes

2016-09-28 Thread pottster
Hi,

Just curious.

Like many of you, I'm sure, I keep a dated/timed list of updates in the
notes area for many of my tasks. For some of these I keep the newest
entries at the top and, for others I keep the newest entries at the bottom
(I have my "reasons" for this). I can't decide whether to be consistent and
use one approach or mix and match as I'm currently doing.

Any thoughts on best practice? What do you do?

Thanks.

functionality https://blog.asana.com/2016/09/track-anything-with-custom-fields/

The more I think about this the more I feel it might be THE big missing
functionality for MLO power users. The use cases in the Asana blog article
give an insight about how this feature could be leveraged.

[MLO] Re: Feature Request: Extra task fields (AKA "Custom Task Attributes")

2016-09-06 Thread pottster
Nothing new I'm afraid. This comes up periodically. See here
 from
2009 for example. It might require sync to undergo a fair amount of
re-development and I'm not sure about the impact on things like database
structure and integrity. Having said that all that, it would be nice to
have and I support the suggestion (although not my top priority).

Google Playstore App refund policy (at time of writing) is 0-2 hours -
automatic via play store app, 2-48 hours apply online via link, 48 hours+ -

[MLO] Re: Accessing Recurrence dialog box (using keyboard)

2016-08-07 Thread pottster
Ah, ok George, you didn't mention if you were setting up a recurrence or
editing an existing one. If you are editing an existing recurrence then alt
+ d does take you to the recurrence dialog. Unfortunately, as you say,
applying a new recurrence setting requires a mouse click to access the
dialog. It is still possible to automate this process using a keyboard
shortcut via AutoHotkey if you are familiar with creating scripts with that
program.

Re: [MLO] Re: How to I disable the individual pop-up notification windows?

2016-03-10 Thread pottster
Hi Mandie,

If you go to the Timing & Reminder section of the Properties Pane, to the
right of the Reminder checkbox is a list of settings. When the Reminder
checkbox is ticked, the list of settings is clickable and this brings up a
dialog to change the settings. The settings I think you want are: "Activate
in Reminders Window" and "Show Desktop Alert". You get an option when
changing settings to make the change the new default.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

It's only expensive if you compare it to less capable software. You said

MLO-Hotkeys - AutoHotkey Scripts for MyLife Organized

Thank you for downloading MLO-Hotkeys. The latest version can be found here:
http://www.jonrumens.com/MLO-Hotkeys.zip

MLO Web Site:http://www.mylifeorganized.net/
MLO Discussion Group:http://groups.google.com/group/MyLifeOrganized
AutoHotkey Web Site:http://www.autohotkey.com

What is MLO-Hotkeys?

MLO-Hotkeys is a set of useful scripts (like macro's) to improve your
productivity when you use the 'MyLife Organized' task management
application.

Each script is assigned a specific 'hotkey' which is the combination
or sequence of keys you press to trigger it.

I think MLO-Hotkeys adds some nice features to MyLife Organized. I like to add
features this way, using simple AutoHotkey scripts.
Maybe it saves Andrey a bit of time as he doesn't have to worry about so many
feature requests from me :-)
I know he has many more important development tasks to worry about..
like adding a Calendar View to MLO, hopefully! ;-)

The hotkeys can be customized in the MLO-Hotkeys.ini settings file.

How to install

1. Extract the contents of the zip file to your computer.
2. With MLO closed, run the MLO-Hotkeys.reg file to set the correct
 internal hotkeys within MLO itself.
3. MLO-Hotkeys will autodetect your last used MLO file and use that as
default. If you need to change this, please change the settings in
 the ini file.
4. Install AutoHotkey from www.autohotkey.com (it's really easy)
5. Run MLO-Hotkeys.ahk, and install a shortcut to your startup folder
 if desired.
6. MLO-Hotkeys will run in your system tray with a purple MLO tree
 icon.

How to update and keep your custom settings

1. Just replace your MLO-Hotkeys.ahk file with the new one.

List of Functions and Default Hotkeys

MLO Context Menu Left Click & Right Click / Ctrl-Right Click
This will show the MLO-Hotkeys context menu with commonly used
commands. It works under MLO Outline or To-Do list.

ToggleMLO
  Win-M / Double Click Tray
This hotkey will Toggle MLO Open and Minimized.
It works even if MLO is minimized to the tray or not running at all.

Rapid Task Entry Win-N
This hotkey will Toggle the MLO Rapid Task Entry Dialog.
It works even if MLO is minimized to the tray or not running at all.

Rapid Task Favs
Win-Alt-N

parent selected.

SnippetToTask
Ctrl-Alt-C
This hotkey script will copy the highlighted text in any application
and create a new task under the top of the outline using the copied
text for the task name and notes. It even works with entire web pages.
If you copy the text from Firefox the URL will be grabbed too and
inserted into the notes!

ToggleZoom
Ctrl-R
Toggle the Zoom on and off.

ToggleNotesProperties Alt-2
Toggle between the Task Notes and Properties tabs.

ToggleContextsF8
Toggle the Contexts Window Open/Closed.

Re: [MLO] Entering tasks with date/time included?

2016-01-13 Thread pottster
You can abbreviate a lot of the parsing commands to make them quicker to
type e.g. "Test water tomorrow 3p remind 10m" works. The "in advance" is
superfluous - not much demand for reminders after the event ;-)

Works for me in any view; editing an existing task or adding a new task.
You don't get a parsing confirmation dialog though, so, are you sure you're
parsing correctly? (user guide has details)

[MLO] Re: MLO combined with paper/BulletJournal?

2015-12-11 Thread pottster
Hi Lisa,

I was wondering the other day what had happened to you! Glad to hear you're
doing better and hope you can get back to regular contributions on this
forum again.

Regarding MLO and note taking...

I was actually thinking about this myself this week. My setup is getting a
bit of control as I realised that I was using different apps for ideas,
reminders, lists, brainstorming, research, knowledge bases, document
writing, quick reference notes etc etc. In total about 12 apps across
desktop and mobile! Did I say a *bit* out of control? The problem is the
apps are all great in different ways, and keep getting better. In terms of
combining with MLO, I'm in the middle of stripping out anything that isn't
a pure task/project. I want MLO to be solely for clearly defined actionable
activity.

Rather than recommend one particular app I would take a different tack and
suggest you might think about using something with voice to text
capability. This has improved *massively* over the last six months with
Siri and Google Now becoming the tools they always promised to be. From
memory, I think you were on Android, and Google Docs have recently added
dictation support to make it really easy to get down longer amounts of text
- via both the mobile app and via the web interface. This might be a good
option if you still having periods where you are incapacitated or limited
to short bursts of energy.

Graphical notes: - I'm getting boring on this front but I'll say it anyway
- please look at Scapple
Digitizing hand written paper notes: has to be Evernote
Converting analogue input to digital: Surface Pro + One Note becoming
unbeatable
Outline notes and lists: I've rediscovered Workflowy recently and I'm
totally in love with it (i'm a sucker for elegant, simple, design)
Paper notes: Moleskine notebook + Palomino Blackwing pencil (marriage made
in heaven)

Good luck and good health :-)

[MLO] Re: Is there any way to filter on highlighted tasks? Or bolded?

2015-10-29 Thread pottster
Short answer, no. A kludge would be to have a flag which applied automatic
formatting of highlight/bold and then filter by that flag. You could
allocate a keyboard shortcut for the flag to replace Ctrl+h/Ctrl+b.

> Flags might be the best way to do this.

- What folder structure are you using? (e.g. what are the main folder
> called and how many do you have in the root?)
>

It wouldn't be helpful to you to have the details of my folder structure.
Try to have as flat a structure as you can, ideally no more than three or
four levels - beyond that start using tags (contexts/flags/stars).

- Where do you put your GTD type 'lists' (e.g. 'Someday-Maybe' or
> equivalent)?
>

Not sure what this means. Remember, MLO is not a notebook, it's a *task*
manager.
If you're are asking about stages in a GTD process then they are temporary
attributes best handled by tags in an Outliner (different story if you're
using something like Trello). I would use flags, as each stage of the GTD
process is mutually exclusive.

- What are your main views in the left hand column that you use regularly?
>

Again, my views will not be helpful to you. I'd just say, try not to waste
time creating too many permanent views - you'll forget about them and you
won't be able to remember the keyboard shortcuts. Besides, it's easy to
filter on the fly for ad hoc viewing.

- Do you use hotkeys to jump to Views or to jump to locked Workspace Tabs?

Depends where my hands are. More often, I use Mouse Gestures - it's
generally quicker and easier to remember (muscle memory).

- How many Contexts do you have - and how do jump between them?
>

None. But, that's just me. I don't need them.

- Also, do you ever allocate things to do "only in evenings" - if so how?
>

No. But I do mark tasks to look at later in the day when I'm waiting for
someone or something to progress. I use automatic formatting for this.

IMPORTANT POINTS
This has been said before but it's worth saying again. *There is no
definitive ideal setup in MLO.* What works for me probably won't work for
you. Everyone has different goals/priorities/preferred ways of
working/demands from others/roles/circumstances etc etc

Here is another important point. You're set up will change because your
goals/priorities/preferred ways of working/demands from
others/roles/circumstances etc etc will change over time. So you should
keep an open mind and prepare to change your set up as required.

By all means take ideas from what other people are doing but there is no
substitute for experimenting yourself and finding what works best for *you.
*My recommendation would be to spend strictly a maximum of one day per week
playing with your setup. The rest of the time just get on with your tasks.
The more tasks you process the clearer the requirements of your set up will
become to you.

One final thing which may give you food for thought, and since you asked
about using flags, here is my current list for actual and possible uses for
giving tasks attributes via flags: -

   - task status (traffic light system)
   - stages of a process
   - changing context
   - physical location
   - energy level required
   - Importance v Urgency
   - device
   - risk level
   - delegation
   - pomodoros (number of pomodoros/task)
   - focus required
   - creativity required
   - Dr Bono's six thinking hats
   - how rewarding when completed
   - top three tasks for the day
   - mood required for task
   - this task needs subtasks
   - daily/weekly goals (keeps a history)
   - setting parsing attributes for formatting in RTE e.g. highlight
   - kanban (drag & drop between groups)

Hope this helps. Sorry, but I won't have time to elaborate any further.

[MLO] Re: Due and Starred

2015-10-12 Thread pottster
If you mean have a star applied in the star column, then no.

It is possible to have a star icon applied when a task is due in the icon
column via automatic formatting but, I suspect, you want the star column so
that you can use associated views.

Your question does raise a very interesting point though. In MLO we can use
Conditions to apply formatting and filtering perhaps the next step could be
using Conditions to apply task attributes such as importance/urgency, tags
(stars/flags/contexts), project status etc. What do other people think?

As a starting point, I've attached a group of GTD icons I've created
for my own use. You're free to use, distribute and edit them under a
Creative Commons licence. I've included a .txt file with details of the
licence and some more information on the reasons for making them flat,
 simple and block-colour.

I used TouchDraw on the iPad for creating the icons.
I recommend IcoFx for creating and editing icons from pictures - This

 Share and enjoy!

[MLO] Re: Where are column widths stored/determined

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MyLifeOrganized.net\MyLife\Settings\ColumnAutoResizing

[MLO] Re: Using keyboard shortcuts, how can I move a task down, directly to the top of a folder? (Windows MLO)

2015-10-08 Thread pottster
Hmm, if it works for you that's great. Just be careful you aren't just
getting very good at the digital equivalent of shuffling paper. It's worth
remembering that GTD was borne essentially by the analogue world and the
workflow in the book was a paper flow. A guiding principle was to touch
each piece of paper as few times as possible and for as briefly as
possible. If you are continually moving tasks in an outline, changing
attributes, changing format, (none of it moving you closer to done), then
you might want to look at how you could organize differently. A neatly
ordered desk isn't as welcome as a clear desk!

Definitely something for the MLO android devs to capitalize on.

[MLO] Re: MLO RTE window dialog parsing bug?

2015-09-30 Thread pottster
I believe this is intended behaviour.

In the MLO User's Guide. section 9.3 Input parsing page 105, states

Complete list of reserved words:

> locale (Mon, Monday, .. Sun,

I'm taking this to mean that the only supported forms of parsing are the
full day name or the three letter abbreviation.

[MLO] Re: Someone help me understand why this won't parse

2015-09-22 Thread pottster
Hi Joel,

I reckon it's because you have enabled the setting in Tools>Options>General
Application Options>Rapid Task Entry dialog>Place additional text in task
note if text entered is greater than...

What's happening is that MLO is pushing the text greater than this limit
(including your parsing switch) into the Notes column without further
action.

Your choices are: -

   1. Increase the limit in this setting
   2. De-activate the setting
   3. Be more succinct!

Good luck.

[MLO] Re: Entering data into MLO Android in 'Hands Free' mode / whilst driving a car ?

2015-09-22 Thread pottster
Hi John,

If you've got a recent version of Android and you've got Google Now enabled
with voice prompt you can use: -

"Ok Google" wait for the tone, "Take a note", wait for the prompt and then
dictate the task. Currently, the first time you use this it will ask which
app you want to send the note to. The list I get includes task managers
like Wunderlist but not MLO. I know you're in the Android Beta group so
perhaps you could suggest this integration if you need it. In the meantime,
you could send to another app and copy into MLO at a later time.

Don't forget the "only when it's safe and legal" advice - there is enough
in-car distraction these days and that's from a long time road warrior who
knows.

btw if you haven't tried it, the voice activation in android has always
been good (far better than Siri) and it's recently become even better and
faster - kudos to Google

[MLO] Re: Delegate Update?

I agree with you Martin. I'm using Wunderlist to share and delegate tasks
and find it easy and effective. Importantly, the people I use it with are
either already using it, or find it simple to understand.

It would be a very big decision for MLO to move from single-user to
collaborative. A better course to take may involve developing integration
through apps like ITTT and Zapier, or improving the export options e.g.
opml.

[MLO] Is this the most trivial bug ever reported on MLO forum?

2015-09-04 Thread pottster
If there is a prize for the most trivial bug ever reported on this forum.
If so, I'd like to claim it!

The easiest way to reproduce: -

   1. Maximise window
   2. Hide the Task Views Pane
   3. Move the mouse pointer to the extreme left edge of the screen
   4. Slide the pointer down to about 5% (of the window height) up from the
bottom and you'll just make out an indentation of about 1-2 pixels (yes,
   it's that small)
   5. Keep a steady hand and click on it
   6. The Save Current View Settings dialog pops up.

Of course, it could always be an undocumented feature ;-)

Can anyone else reproduce this?

PS Before you ask, I do have too much time on my hands

Well, we did it and, even if I say so myself, it went very well. It was
just a test but Adam and I both really enjoyed talking about MLO face to
face with another user. We came to the same conclusions that the Blab
platform would be great for chatting about MLO in addition to this forum.
However, we both agreed that the very best next step would be to get Andrey
involved in either an interview and/or a general chat with users. In case
he thinks this would be intimidating I have to tell you (and him) that we
spent most of the time talking about just how wonderful MLO was and how we
wished he was there so we could tell him personally. What do you all think?
Would you participate if we arranged something?

Fellow MLO devotees, I'm looking for two or three people to participate
in an online video chat about MLO.

 *BACKGROUND*
There is a new website (still in beta) which is taking the Social Media
world by storm at the moment called Blab. It's basically like a series of
public Google Hangouts sessions but what makes it different is: -

- they have absolutely nailed it technically (unlike Google
Hangouts)
- they have the format just right
- it's very easy for newcomers

It's early days but it has a lot of potential. Have a look yourself
 https://blab.im

The reason for my request is twofold; firstly, I wanted to host my own
Blab to test it out technically, and secondly, I thought it would be fun
 to
chat with people who use MLO.

 *WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW*

- the chats are public, so anyone can watch and listen
- the chats can be recorded although I will not be recording this
one as it's just a test

 *WHAT YOU NEED*

- same set up as for Skype video calling i.e. reasonable
webcam/mic/speakers/headset - having said that a lot of people are
 using
smartphones successfully
- reasonable internet connection
- willingness to discuss anything MLO (hopefully that's a given)
and try something new

If you want to look at a Blab I was just viewing which may be relevant
and interesting to MLO users look here: - Productivity Blab
https://goo.gl/udsgt8 (I contributed a few comments under the handle
 pottyschap)

If you're interested in participating, message me privately. Any
 questions/comments reply normally.

No disclaimer required - I'm nothing to do with the site, just wanted
 to try it out!

 Thanks guys.

Hi all,

Adam and I are going ahead with our test discussion tomorrow (Thu 27 Aug
2015) at 15.00 UK time (GMT+1). There isn't a unique URL you just go to
https://blab.im/index and it will be one of the listed broadcasts titled
Test Discussion run by Ken Warren. All are welcome; you can participate or
just watch. It's only a test but it might be something which we can use to
discuss MLO in the future.

Good luck, but it's beginning to sound more like a kludge than a solution.
The irony is you're demonstrating exactly why MLO is different because the

Interesting, thanks. OK, but this could get confusing if the task you
tried to move disappears off the view, because you cant get it back simply
by hitting the same hotkey for the second time, because it will then have
 lost focus (!).

For now my workaround is to make what was my green flag flag use a
completely transparent (16 x 16 px) icon so that it looks identical to a
cleared flag. And like I say to filter my Active Do ASAP list on either
No Flag OR what was my green flag...

[MLO] Re: Confession time: Just how little of MLO am using! (Plus advice sought)

2015-08-13 Thread pottster

Hi John,

I was wondering how you were getting on. The good news is that you're still
using MLO!

Christoph has done a fantastic job of responding to specific points you
made so I'll just make a few general observations.

My personal breakthrough with MLO came when I stopped trying to learn and
utilize the complete feature set and, instead, adapted MLO to meet my
personal requirements and way of working. I'm pretty sure that is true for
most, if not all, users. Everybody has a different setup. This is the big
appeal of MLO, that it can be configured to support any task management
system or methodology. The key here is that YOU have to decide how you're
going to work, MLO won't dictate to you what that should be. With respect,
if you need that level of hand-holding you should probably look elsewhere.
MLO certainly isn't bloatware! It has always been, and is still, very fast
and has a very small footprint in terms of program and data size. It's a
mature software product with a large feature set but that does not equate
to bloatware. I think it was Joel Spolsky who made the observation about
another software product that users may only use 20% of the functionality
but it's a different 20% for each user.

You are right in saying that it appeals to power users and isn't completely
intuitive or friendly for newcomers. That's not ideal but the reason people
persevere with MLO, or return to it having tried everything else, is it
rewards the investment of effort.

Spending too much time on your set up is not a unique problem. Far from it.
The addictiveness of the personal productivity phenomenon as evidenced
through the amount of software and writing even has it's own euphemism -
Productivity Porn. You'll never achieve the perfect set up so just get a
good one and start doing stuff. Your setup will change with your role and
responsibilities anyway.

A couple of questions for you John - tell us why you are still using MLO?
What are the things you've found useful?

 Hello

 Confession time:
I thought it would be helpful to this community to report back after a few
months of use just how *little* of MLO I am using. In part I am also
asking for practical advice on how to make better genuinely
*time-efficient* use of more features of MLO.

 SUMMARY
I have discovered that in practice all I am using MLO for is:
 a) A glorified To-Do list - mostly for today
 b) A list of major projects (although this gets less attention that it
 should)

 HOTKEYS
In practice I am using VERY little of MLO. Here is what I am using:
 - I use *Alt/Shift/arrow keys...* a LOT to change priority and
indentations into Projects. This is one of the best features of MLO
 interface.
 - I use Stars (*Control/Shit/S*) for do today - however I am NOT using
the Star outline because I think *visually* and like to see the 2D shape
of projects (indentations etc) on the page.
 - I use Highlighting (*Control/H*) to flag up IMPORTANT stuff to do
 (today).

 - I sit mostly in the Active Tasks outline view(**) and insert
tasks/projects directly into it using *Insert* and *Alt/Insert*.
 - I use *Control/S* to input the Start date (e.g. 6h or 2d) to get
things to disappear off the view for a few hours or days.

From time to time I look at the (long/medium term) Goals outline view.

...and (slightly shamefully) that's about it.

 BACKGROUND
I discovered that I was wasting far, FAR too much time learning the
system, trying to set things up and discussing the technology... and not
getting on with my life! i.e. Not actually Getting Things Done fast enough!

 WEAKNESSES OF MLO
I still think MLO is massively confusing to any newbie. Bloatware comes
to mind. And until this is sorted out I don't think MLO will ever make many
significant sales to consumers. I like and use this product. However I am
unable to recommend this product to any of my productive/busy friends due
to the hideous learning curve. This is product (productivity platform) only
for my friends who are hard-core geeks. I cannot imagine any highly
productive CEO of a major corporation using this stuff.

Also the Andriod app is - to be brutal - appalling.
 1. It should sync automatically with my PC. [That's it - no discussion!]
 2. I want to be able to drag drop items up and down my lists (equivalent
to using the Alt/Shift/arrow keys on my keyboard) and also sideways - in
and out of a hierarchy. [No discussion on this either!]
Sorry but *only* if MLO gets these two things right does the app even
*begin* to become useful to me.

 ADVICE SOUGHT

 a) Moving tasks between lists
From time to time I do a weekly review but I now have a ton of stuff
(250 - 500 items) on my various GTD style 'lists' and partly as a result
moving tasks/projects in out of my different lists is just too hard. i.e. I
can't do it in a couple of clicks. So in practice I just don't

[MLO] Re: Missing Property Pane entries

2015-08-06 Thread pottster
Hi Douglas,

Not sure if this addresses your issue but the Sections
Importance/Urgency, Contexts and Goals on the checklist are actually sub
sections i.e. they are contained within the General section. If you uncheck
them it doesn't change the list of sections but they disappear from within
the General section. Hope that makes sense.

[MLO] Re: Interesting article - The Most Productive People Have One Thing In Common: They Do Nothing

2015-07-25 Thread pottster
The idea expressed in the article is really just another way of saying
concentrate on doing the right things more than doing things right. In
other words, create the space/time to regularly review what your current
priorities and goals are. The important point here is that they CHANGE;
hence the importance of regular reviews within GTD. A lot of this is
expounded in David Allen's book Ready For Anything which never got the good
reviews it deserved because people were expecting another nuts and bolts
treatise like Getting Things Done. It's worth a read if you haven't already.

On Friday, 24 July 2015 13:06:33 UTC+1, John Smith wrote:

 Hello

What do you make of this interesting article?

 http://elitedaily.com/life/culture/productive-people-do-nothing/1107640/

Apparently the key to productivity is not blasting through (endless) to-do
lists flat out, nope - not even nicely prioritized ones. No, according to
David Allen the trick is to create enough 'space' in your mind in order to
think clearly. The way to do this can be either to deliberately put stuff
off or to deliberately not do most of the stuff on your list at all.

I think the title is slightly disingenuous - highly productive people
don't JUST sit around doing nothing, but nonetheless spending a
significant amount of time doing nothing is extremely important nonetheless
 to one's overall productivity.

 Food for thought, no?

[MLO] Re: Mind Maps (revisted)

2015-06-04 Thread pottster
I brainstorm with Scapple http://www.literatureandlatte.com/scapple.php and
then import into MLO if required. (Hint to Andrey: this is another instance
where .opml import for MLO would be useful).

I think MLO is the best for task and project management. But at some
point, when I get stuck, I copy and paste from MLO to iMindQ and it really
 gets the ideas flowing again.

I don't know that MLO ever needs create their own dedicated mind map, but
I just wanted to toss this out there and check out (revisit) other MLO
 experiences.

[MLO] Re: Feature Request: Time Entry change

2015-06-04 Thread pottster
Hi Alan,

I suspect this will not be possible, certainly in the short term.

Have you considered re-mapping the number pad keys. I have re-mapped my
NumLock key since I always have this set to on. You could for instance,
remap the NumLock key to a colon and that way you wouldn't take your hands
from the numberpad. The easiest way to do this is using AutoHotKey. If you
are familiar with AHK I can provide you with a script, if not, I can
provide you with an .exe file. Let me know.

 Hi MLO Team,

I'm a (very) long time user of MLO, having first used it on a PocketPC
Phone Edition (anyone remember those)? Long before Apple even started
thinking about phones, Microsoft released the now long dead Windows CE.
I've since moved on to (currently) being a registered Desktop, Android, and
CloudSync user. In all the years I've searched for tools to fully implement
a GTD process, nothing (among literally hundreds of products I've looked at
over the years) has ever been able to come close to being able to do it all
in one tool. Except for MLO (and one other tool that DavidCo developed
internally, but it was based on Lotus Notes (uhg), and didn't have anywhere
near the functionality of your amazing little piece of software.

I checked the website and couldn't find a specific method for submitting
feature requests and product feedback so I thought I'd put it here, since I
found a bunch of others already posted to this group when I did a search.
As an aside, before I get into it, have you considered implementing
 UserVoice (https://www.uservoice.com/product/product-management/)? If
you haven't heard of it, it's fantastic (at least from a user persepctive).
There are a number of small development projects who make products that I
use that have implemented it to gather feature requests from their user
base. It does a whole lot more to support product development, apparently,
but my experience with it is as a user. What makes it so fantastic from
that point of view is that it maintains a list of features requested by the
community, or suggested by the developers, and allows the users to vote on
the features they'd most like to see. Each person gets a finite number of
votes to apply, and can add one, two, or three votes to an item. These
votes are then locked until either the user removes them to place somewhere
else, the feature is implemented and the developer marks it complete, or
 it's retired.

Anyway, I'm not posting about user voice. I wanted to ask if it would be
possible to add a capability to time entry fields/controls. I live on
24-hour time and have all clocks in my life set to the 24-hour format. When
ever I reference time in writing I simply have to type 4 digits. E.G. 7:39p
 = 1939; 3:07am = 0307.

So far the only place I enter time data is in due dates and reminders,
but since my workflow is heavily dependent on reminders I interact with
these fields very often. What I'd like to be able to do is enter the time
of a reminder just as I've described above, without having to put in the
 colon.

I realize this is a special case and, as a hobbyist developer myself, I
understand that one tries to avoid special cases as much as possible, but
this one in particular would be really really nice to have :)

I know it probably doesn't seem like much, but since there's no : on the
number pad, it's actually quite a distruptive shift to have to change over
to the main keys, press shift then ;, then go back to the number pad to
finish. In fact, even cooler would be, if I enter only two numbers, they be
assumed to be the hour, and the minutes just set to :00.

At the moment, when i try to enter time like this, the control thinks I'm
entering a year, and blows up my date. I've attached a couple of screen
 shots to illustrate.

I just spent an hour or so researching online the best practices for
storing dates in software (datetime or separate date and time fields) and
it looks to me like the controls that have been used conform to established
best practices. I don't know how easy it to would be to code up the logic
on the controls to evaluate for the condition I've asked for on the
LeaveControl event, but if it's not too much trouble I'd really love it!

Thanks so much for building such a fantastic product! You have a customer
 for life.

 Regards,
 Alan Limebeer

[MLO] Re: Newbie question: How to write Advanced Filter rule?

2015-06-04 Thread pottster
Hi Jennifer,

Excellent choice! I've been using MLO for work and play for years - there's
nothing like it.

The quick(ish) and dirty way of doing what you want is to use the Context
section of the Filter Pane. Make sure the Operation setting shows a red OR,
then click on the (none) context and then shift click on the last context
in your list, finally control click on the context you want to exclude. If
you use this filter regularly, you can click on the Save View... button.

Advanced filtering is one of the most powerful and unique features of MLO.
Unfortunately, it has probably never been documented as fully and clearly
as it might have been. I don't have time right now to go into it
(volunteers?) but don't be deterred from just experimenting - sometimes
it's the best way to learn. I suspect that most of the experienced users
here have built up their knowledge by doing just that.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

 Hello!

I'm experimenting with MLO. So far I really like it because it seems to
offer a lot of DIY customization, which is a good fit for me.

My question is, what are the semantics for writing an Advanced Filter
rule? I get the Boolean principles but am not sure about the details.

I looked for this in the User Manual and in this group but haven't been
able to find a general how-to kind of guide. If someone can help me out
 I'll be forever grateful :).

Basically all I want to do is exclude one single context (Waiting For)
from my active list. If there's an easier way to do that, I'd love to know
it, but I'll still be curious about the general query language.

 Thanks in advance!
 Jennifer

[MLO] Video Tutorials

2015-05-30 Thread pottster
Hey, video tutorials have launched in MLO desktop! Bizarrely, notice
appears as a caution triangle in the bottom right corner - there are
probably better ways to publicise this guys e.g. a mailshot. Anyway,
congratulations on addressing this very real need - particularly for
beginners. Can I suggest starting a YouTube channel once the library is
complete?

[MLO] Re: The MyLifeOrganized story. How your favorite task management app is made.

2015-05-29 Thread pottster
Hi Marina,

Really nice article! Lots of interesting insights; in particular, about the
early development of MLO. Good picture of Andrey - I always wondered what
he looked like. How about some more pictures of the rest of the team? I
thought it was especially revealing how Andrey takes encouragement from
words of appreciation - perhaps you should interview some of us old hands
about our history with MLO so we can tell you why we use it and how it
makes a difference in our lives ;-)

There you will find an idea of the app, how different versions were made,
