On Facebook Millclock said that even with the electronics in the base, the
tubes can be used directly without their software just like a conventional
nixie.

They seem to be an old version of the B-7009.
The seller used exactly the same photo for all six tubes in another auction
before. eBay sellers get lazier every year.
My advice:
Ask for more photos! Always. Even for NIB tubes (if the box has already been
opened).

I read that glow disconnecting from the bottom has to do with the speed at
which the signal changes. So the « steepness » of the signal. To prevent that,

A while back Dalibor posted somewhere that he could now etch his own cathodes.
So it is possible to order custom nixies with any letter, symbol and number
combination you like as long as there is enough space.
I suppose 10 is the maximum.

The Chinese nixies QS-30 and SZ-8 also have short lifetimes of respectively
1000 and 500 hours per datasheet. In my experience they don't last very long
indeed compared to tubes with mercury. Especially the one in the 10s of hours
position in my clocks.

Yeah, it's really beyond me why anyone would pay money for anything else than
the famous trio (zm1042/z5660m, IN-18 and Dalibor's RZ568M) when everyone knows
that size is all that matters and these 3 tubes is all you need - ever! :-)

Does it have to be RPi? There are many options available for arduino, but for
some reason not many for the RPi (that I know of).
I think all options already include the 5V/3.3V and HV power-supply.

I also witnessed this "awakening" process where the wire(s) would glow, but
only with old top-view nixies. The test sequence on Pete's clock was switching
too quickly between the cathodes to be efficient, so I hooked the nixies up
manually to a 170V supply through an appropriate anode resistor.
Maybe the seller bid on his own tubes with a different account to raise the
price and got greedy?
I never understood how people plan on making money on eBay if they only put 2
pictures...

Jürgen's clocks (nixiekits.eu) use scrolling to switch between time and date. I
find it a nice feature since it uses the digits in the tubes more evenly in
addition to the anti cathode poisoning routine.
I like clocks with 2 "dots" for each separator column.

The sockets on the blue dream seem to be less forgiving indeed : I managed to
crack an IN-18 not long ago because the pins were not straight enough on that
tube I bought on eBay. :-(
That was on my latest clock.
The 2 blue dream clocks I assembled before that still work well after 3 and 4
My contact from the US will bring me the first batch himself when he visits
mid-September so won't know how bad the nixies are until then.
This time there are more close-up pictures and tests for the second batch.

The IN-18 or the small one?
For the small one there should be a test point TP1 for the high voltage (180V).
The rectified input voltage and the 5V can be checked on IC2 (the 7805 or
equivalent IC).
On the IN-18 there are separate test points for 12V, 5V and
I thought that there was actually an exchange of matter between the cathodes
going both ways when all the cathodes are on alternatively.
Which means that if only 1 or 2 cathodes are used, theses cathodes erode faster.
I don't know if the sputtering on the glass in the front is also worse on the
