I had the same problem with my 83' 650 and I ended up replacing both the
solenoid and the starter(the later twice as I got a bad one from ebay.) do
all the checks as described above and make sure it is one or the other
before getting into the headache that I went into.

The SaddleSore 1000 is the shortest one they have. 1000 miles in 24
hours. All of the great lakes rides qualify for that as well. I
think I'm going to do the lower lakes 1000 sometime next year once

I'd replace it. At 9+ years old that rubber has to be tired and the
general rule of thumb is two rear tires for every front of the same
brand. So between 15-20k miles per front depending on the tire. A
tire blow out, especially a front tire, is not something you want to
do. I had a rear go out
Hard to mistake those side covers and that tank. Too bad it's on the
wrong side of the country or I might have gone to look at it.
