[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Noob mistake has me searching...

2018-03-17 Thread pdxkevy
Thanks DDT, I appreciate the advice. I do have the Honda workshop manual
and the Clymer manual as well as a model specific subscription to am online
shop manual from cyclepedia.com. I have read a great deal about the bearing
replacement and you're right it looks very delicate and would probably be
better suited for a shop at that stage. I have already started the
disassembly of the bike and am preparing to remove the engine Monday. The
way I look at it is I have three options. 1. Bring the crank to a pro and
have it done. (kinda pricey but reliable) 2, Source a used complete shaft
with rods and bearings and do it myself.(probably still a little pricey,
and possibly not as reliable. and 3. (this is my current leaning) I may
have a line on a complete engine which is said to have only 4000 miles on
it. Good compression, no rod play, smooth tranny. I won't have a chance to
see the motor until later next week but the seller is local and received
the engine as part of a package deal with several bikes he purchased. I
will make my final decision once i get a look at the motor. We shall see.
Once again thanks for your help.

Maybe you should look for a workshop manual before you start to disassemble
the bike. I think, the books by Clymer or Haynes will do as good as the
original from Honda. If Google translated it right ( i'm from
Germany...),you need to renew the bearing between rod and crankshaft.
That's tricky, for you'll have to measure the clearance between rod and
bearing to figure out which size of bearing you need. You need a stuff
called "Plastigauge" to do this. Maybe you should disassemble the engine
with the help of the manual and then take the crankshaft and rods to a shop
that's specialised in engine overhauling. They can figure out the right
size of the bearings and that won't be too expensive. Buying Plastigauge
might cost you more... the measuring you'll have to do to have a clean
running engine afterwards is nothing that can be done easily by someone
who's never done this before. And you need expensive equipment to do this.

Yeah, I checked him out when I was doing research. Most of what he does is
on a CB550. It's good content but not close enough to my bike to pay for.
This gentleman has a series that is good which, once again, isn't exactly a
fit for me but very informative. He works on a 85 CB759sc.

2018-03-09 Thread pdxkevy
Thanks Sean, There are a couple of motors on Ebay that would do just fine
but the prices are out of my range. When you add shipping you're looking at
almost a grand. So, I'm kinda searching as local as possible' I would
drive a couple hundred miles for a solid engine at a reasonable price.
Reasonable being subjective of course. I remember the wrecking yard i think
you are talking about. Out on marine drive somewhere. That place was
awesome but closed down sadly quite a few years ago. I'm slowly edging
toward rebuilding it myself. It's waaay outside my experience but I guess
that's how you learn. I could probably do it less expensively replacing the
offending components as long as I can get it back together properly. And
hey, if I pull it off it will feel pretty damn good. If not, at least I
gave it a shot and will definitely learn quite a bit. We'll see, no hurry
really. I have my 63 CA95 Benly that I restored this past spring to putter
around on this summer.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Noob mistake has me searching...

2018-03-09 Thread 'Hawaii Sean' via Nighthawk Motorcycle Lovers!
Funny I got a 82 Nighthawk because that was the year I graduated from High
School.

Try eBay for the engine. Search for nighthawk 650 motor you'll find 5 or 6
82 & 83 650 engines in the first set of results. It 83 works you have a
couple of choices. Go to the eBay store PinWall cycles (
http://stores.ebay.com/PinWall-Cycle-Parts-Inc). They have a 82 and 83 650
frame listed I reach out to them whenever I need parts for my 96 750
- they buy insurance bikes and sell the parts on eBay and can't list all
400,000+ parts that they have. I called them when I needed a rear brake
peddle, they had one and it was about 1/2 the price of any of the other
sellers.

I know there used to be a motorcycle junkyard in North West Portland.
Sorry I can't remember the name. They specialized in older bike. I don't
know if they are still in business.

Good luck - Sean
