Am unable to switch em because it's one cdi box with two entry points both with for prongs but one housing has room for six I tried jamming the one with four into the one with six and got nothing. The next thing you have to do is swap the two CDI boxes and see if this flips the problem to the opposite cylinders. I've never owned a 550 Nighthawk but I had several 1984 V30 Magnas, and I had to get new CDI boxes for one of them. These play the role of the distributors of old. They are probably under the seat somewhere. If swapping them doesn't reverse the problem, then about the only thing left is the pick ups on the fly wheel. That's where the spark originates. I replaced them all just as you showed In your write up, then I switched the coils and was still getting spark to one and four so the coils are good. Still no spark to two and three. Was posting on this other forum and found out that it wasn't for the nighthawk it was just for the cb650. Ran it back to the ci ignition box. Opened it up circuits looked messed up a bit so resoldered all the broken ones and still nothing. EGrider is right, parts lookup is the way to go to see what's interchangeable. But I can tell you from personal experience that the coils for the 83-85 CB650 and 84-86 CB700 are interchangeable left and right and between bikes. I tested from the coil, then through the cable off the coil, then from the cap connected too the cable, and all seems to be getting voltage but I don't really know how to use a multi meter very well. Are the coils able to be switched around? If so I'll try just switching em and see. You say you're getting voltage, but you don't say where you tested. If you tested before the coil, swap your coils and see if the problem changes to the two outside ones. This is something people do after they have had a bad experience with stripping out spark plug threads (in aluminium heads). I have not heard of this happening in motorcycle heads though. I'm not sure you need it. But putting them in dry is probably the opposite. if you have any dirt, had them over-tightened or cross-threaded, or there is any galling (transfer of aluminum to the plug threads) then you really need to pay attention to this. If you keep the threads clean and have even the slightest lube on the threads and pay attention to basic tightening rules, then you should have no problem. I have put new threads in a few automotive heads (without removing the head). It is quite a challenge and having to do it once will train you to pay attention to this for the rest of your life. It sucks! *Extra info, purely for your entertainment:* The silver anti seize is the standard stuff. We used the gold, or bronze stuff by the bucket for nuts and bolts in the plastics manufacturing world because if the extreme temperatures for extended periods of time. All the oils would have long since burned off by the time we would disassemble the irons and extruder parts by the time we would take them apart. What is left is a flaky film of this copper-like stuff keeping the screws from totally binding in the equipment. My point here is that a motorcycle head will not get near as hot for near as long as an iron used for sealing/cutting plastic bags in the manufacturing process. It is a horizontal iron, acting as a knife blade, being maintained at about 300-350 degrees F. This is where you need that stuff, not on a motorcycle head. I'm pretty sure my Honda car uses an 18mm plug so you can get a proper plug socket in that size, one with the rubber ring to hold it in the socket for removal/installation. I just went to check, but don't have an easily accessible 18mm wrench. 19mm or 3/4" may work, but slightly big. So 18mm is probably right. On units with points yes, I wouldn't chance it with the CDI ignition system. If you were stuck in the middle of nowhere with no other options you might get away with it but I would find the right plugs. No problem for the oil in the cylinders. Once, as a student, I had an old Citroen 2CV (mythic car with a 625 cm3 engine). I worked with a girl and took her home in the car. I ran out of gas. Yes, really, don't smile... I said dont worry, I have a spare gas can in the trunk, and took the 2 l (half gallon) can and poured it in the tank. Then started the engine, which ran 10 seconds before stopping. I realized that, at night, I missed the gas spare can and poured a 2 l oil can in the tank !!! I had to walk a few miles with the girl to take her at home. Not end of the story. The day after, I came back the poor car, took off the bold allowing to empty the tank from oil, opened the carb and tried to dry it from the remains of oil. Of course, I coun't clean the pipe. Then put new gas in the tank and started. Oh my god... like in the movies of the WW1 when the germans sent the gases. All the surrounding street was under a deep fog. A bus, coming, had to put it's headlights through the cloud ! But the engine ran, and a few minutes later, no more fumes at the exhaust. And this car went ahead for a long service. Not the real end of the story : the girl married one of my friends ! So, don't worry for a few teaspoons of oil in your engine, but don't take a girl for a ride just after it if you have some plans with her! That sounds like when my dad put the new engine in our boat when I was a kid. I say new, but it was a rebuild, anyhow a tablespoon of oil was put in each cylinder during the rebuild. When they finally cranked it up so much smoke billowed out I thought Mötley Crüe was in there.
