[NTG-context] Ligature handling for PDF searching.
(This came up on comp.text.tex in a question about LaTeX, but it also applies to ConTeXt, and the proposed solution for LaTeX doesn't apply.) Consider the following document: \starttext Some ligature tests: ff, fi, ffi, fl, ffl. \stoptext If I process that with texexex -pdf, load it into Acrobat 5, and then copy-and-paste the text from the PDF into a text editor, the fi and fl ligatures are correctly treated as two letters, but the ff, ffi, and ffl ligatures are treated as single (unknown) characters. Similarly, searching for "f" within the document only finds the fi and fl ligatures; it doesn't find the others. Searching for "ff" finds nothing. This is a fairly significant problem in the on-screen usability of ConTeXt-created documents. In LaTeX, there is apparently a solution in the cmap.sty package (though it currently only works for T1 encoding): http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/cmap/ Is there a similar solution for ConTeXt? (Has this perhaps been solved with a later version of ConTeXt than I have on my computer?) Only the four "extra English characters" are still too much (so there
are 25 characters altogether) ... otherwise it looks just perfect!
Oh, I missed those -- that's what you meant by "strange English
characters"! Sorry about that. I've taken those out now, and corrected
the numbers in the "docharacters" macro, so it should now be working properly.

Only the four "extra English characters" are still too much (so there
are 25 characters altogether) ... otherwise it looks just perfect!
I'm looking forward to what my LaTeX colleagues will say about that
when I present them ConTeXt and the tricks like that :)

All you need to do Solvenian ordering is to put a \ccaron in the list
between c and d, and maybe call the macros "sloveniancharacter" and
"slovenianCharacter" to keep them distinct. Then, when you want to specify
a numbering format for an enumeration, you should be able to use
"conversion=solveniancharacter" rather than "conversion=characters".
This isn't quite a complete solution -- ConTeXt has some more code that
defines a \characters macro (with the "s" on the end) that keeps counting
after "z", as x, y, z, aa, ab, ac, and so on. Duplicating that requires
only a little more work.

[NTG-context] "Very dirty" localisation request for a rainy evening
Hello Hans, Today I saw a webpage of someone, who is very active in the field of translation and localisation of free software into Slovenian. It astonished me the way he numered the items on his webpage: (a) approximation ... (b) Gauss ... (c) numerical solutions ... (č) solving parabolic ... % [\ccaron] (d) ... This should actually be the only proper way to number items in Slovenian, but you can imagine that nobody is able to use that since the beginning of computer era. (Another example is the usage of quotation marks: most people use the American quotation marks instead of the German ones just because MS Word defaults to that.) However, those people who really care, use the Slovenian alphabet when enumerating (manually, of course). I'm proud, for example, that I was in the class "1.Č" in the high school. Not right away, but any time in the future when unicode, fonts and similar will be updated/reimplemented/fully supported and when it will be raining cats and dogs and nothing interesting will be on TV: can you think on this this tiny request to switch to local enumeration if \mainlanguage[sl] (or any other language with a similar request) is selected? In a similar way as the sorting rules are applied in this kind of documents. (I'll take the response for "backward compatibility" issues (documents that now use enumeration a, b, c, d would use another enumeration afterwards) - if anyone would complain, he would have to talk to me first!!!) I don't know if there is any special agreement in case there are more than 26 items in the list, but sometimes a, b, ... x, y, z, aa, ab, ac, ... zz, aaa, aab, aac, ... is used. I never needed that many items until now, but the issue could theoretically be interesting for the others. Trying to use more than 26 items results in an arror at the moment. [NTG-context] Position margin text block near previous paragraph
Hello!
This time I have a task like this:
I have margin text blocks (like Note, Tip) that follow some paragraph in my document flow.
In the produced document I get them in margin, but vertically they are just below the paragraph (as in text flow)
I really need then to start exactly where the previous paragraph starts
(vertically). I.e. I need to move them several (unknown number) lines
higher.
My realization:

This is the para with unknown length that can be any number of lines
high. And I have a note below it that should be located to the left of

The easiest would to put it above the target paragraph, but that's not
the solution for me as the same text is rendered to HTML where no
margins exist.
Can I do it plainly in tex code?

1.) This is not exactly the same thing, but if we're talking about
graphics: is it possible to include a figure (\externalfigure, perhaps
withing \placefigure) in such a way that it fills exactly the
remaining avalable space? factor=fit does almost exactly what I want,
but it doesn't consider the space already taken by the preceeding
text. If I wanted a figure to span over the whole presentation sheet,
than factor=fit usually resulted in a caption on one page and a

of 13 mm and the width 10 cm (not necessary centered on the page). I
would like to typeset a paragraph on them, so that the baseline of
this text would be about 0.5 mm above the lines.
I volunteer to write a MyWay if someone can help me with that.

Actually, "\\" is a part of
\fbox{\begin{tabular}[c]{l}1\\2\\3\end{tabular}}\par
while I was talking about typesetting
a midaligned parbox: \parbox[c]{1em}{1 2 3}
So I have to say: no, there's no "\\" present in "\parbox[c]{1em}{1 2
3}". But please forget about different line-braking than in LaTeX
\parbox. It may be that different parameters for penalties are set
anyway. I mainly wrote this because of the problems in
live.contextgarden.net which is not fixed yet (see
http://contextgarden.net/Vertically_centred).
However, some other questions arised here:
1.) I saw \hbox, \vbox, \vtop, \lbox, \cbox, \rbox, \sbox, \tbox,
\bbox on page 106 of cont-eni.pdf. But if I understand it properly,
there's no alternative to LaTeX \parbox command.
1.1.) After grep-ing the LaTeX tree for "\parbox", my disk ran out of space
1.2.) \bTABLE ... \eTABLE seems too complicated to me to be used for
such a simple thing as asking for a paragraph of a certain width,
centered with regard to the current line.
So would it be possible to implement \parbox in ConTeXt (or if someone
can point me to an already existing command). The LaTeX definition is
in tex\latex\base\latex.ltx, line 4692 (at least in my version).
It does not have to have the same syntax, but at least the basic
functionality. I also often need some stuff to be centered vertically,
for example
[big image] > some arrows and text > [big image]
I use \bTABLE ... \eTABLE or \vcenter for that, but it's not the most
perfect way of doing it.
2.) Is there any *neutral* version of a \framed command? To explain
what I want to achive, an example is probably most illustrative:

Hasselt $\displaystyle{\rm is: \matrix{\rm nice\cr\rm sunny\cr\rm

but the houses there \framed{$\displaystyle{\rm are: \matrix{\rm

not trivial indeed, although it is more or less doable when you
accept some limitations, e.g. if you have only text and graphics,
use a grid, and have no other tricky stuff that can interfere
(display math or so)

yes I know. you once told me (as for the first time I asked for this
feature two years ago...).
true, it's a nice trick. and I used it in smaller publications.
but it is not practicable with a lot of images (and this cases are
the regular ones, unfortunately).
typesetting with a lot of images wrapped by text is still a quite
problematic task in ConTeXt/TeX .

it would be great if the \placefigure macro could be extended to
combinations like
\placefigure{top,left}
or
\placefigure{bottom,outer}
The reason for this request is that we use ConTeXt a lot for
typesetting books from "arts and humanities".
There we often have to place a lot of (more then 100) figures at
"fixed" positions like top-outer and bottom-inner, wrapped by text.
I guess it's not a trivial feature to be implemented in TeX's
paragraph processing, but I know it might be worth the effort:

It still doesn't work here. There have been complaints about arguments
not numeric on line 1889, but changing == to eq had no influence on the
final result. Still need an additional run.
As you said, the problem does not occur when you use runtime MP
processing, and would have gone unnoticed if I had not forgotten to
switch it on..

I'm very new at the context section.
I've installed teTeX 3.0 from the sources and in the way it is
explained here:

Everything works fine, I can compile my files.
Now I want to update my version 2005-01-31 to 2005-07-21

Yeah, the \stoptext redefinition was one of the first pieces I wrote,
nearly a year ago. The reason I was doing the \stoptext redefinition
wasn't the internal \end macro (which didn't exist then, I think) --
it was that the ConTeXt version I used then didn't have an
\everystoptext hook. But now that it exists, I can just use it.
One other question I have right now: what's a good way to duplicate
LaTeX's \vspace macro (which is effectively a \vskip inside), without
causing the problems that the ConTeXt manual warns about if we use
\vskip?
