In response to Hans Hagen and Wolfgang Schuster's messages of Dec. 5, Just to let you know, in response to your messages, I am working a small, self-contained example that reproduces the problem. However I have been asked to focus on a different project for a few days, so ... please don't interpret my silence as "We asked him to do due diligence and he never answered." :-) Hopefully I'll be back with more, next week. I often write mathematical-oriented papers that need zero tweaking with OpenType fonts, complex layouts or that could benefit from lua scripting. I compile those randomly with MKII and MKIV, if nothing else to check for differences, or if there is a problem in MKIV, I can always use MKII is a fallback. MKII hardly ever changes, so it is slightly more reliable in some cases, but it is very limited in comparison to MKIV. I use XeTeX mostly when I need OpenType fonts and something in MKIV breaks. XeTeX has some advantages in out-of-the-box support for exotic scripts (which I don't use), but many of its features are not supported in ConTeXt at the high-level user interface. Or can I just always use MKIV? As already mentioned speed depends on the kind of document. In general context runs slower with xetex and luatex if only because these are unicode engines while pdftex is 8 bit. Occasionally i do speed tests and it also depends on the operating system, file caching etc. For luatex the size of the cpu cache also matters. Although pdftex/mkiv is always faster unless on eused metapoist in which case mkiv is a clear winner (the metafun manual runs in tens of seconds in mkiv but takes many minutes in mkii. Comparing xetex/mkii and luatex/mkiv is difficult as xetex also pipes its output to a dvi backend. On some tests mkiv is faster, on some others mkii but I must admit that i only tested simple document. On a raw simple document, pdftex can be twice as fast as xetex or luatex. The more lua driven features are used, the slower mkiv becomes but in general it does a better job then. Anyhow .. only luatex/mkiv will evolve so best stick to that. [NTG-context] Interesting package for XeTeX
Hi all, on ctt, I just saw an annoucement for a xe(la)tex package which I found quite interesting. Here's the description: Location on CTAN: /macros/xetex/latex/ucharclasses This package addresses one of the few features where TeX still has to play catch-up to word processing programs: automatic font switching for different languages. In fact, it goes one better than word processing programs and comes with macros for inserting arbitrary code between text from different unicode blocks, by making use of XeTeX's little known "intercharclass" behaviour. I was wondering: is something similar possible in mkiv yet? I know that with the font fallback mechanism, it's trivial to change fonts for unicode ranges, but is it possible to change hyphenation patterns (or even insert "arbitrary code") according to unicode blocks? When compiling with --xtx, texexec (or xdvipdfmx) warns about missing dvipdfmx.cfg (that should, according to TeX Live structure, be in texmf/dvipdfmx/dvipdfmx.cfg), and once you manually add that, about missing cid-x.map (texmf/fonts/map/dvipdfmx/cid-x.map). Hmmm ... while experimenting a bit and after writing a long answer explaining that I'll come back to it after a while ... I figured out that I have already implemented a fix, but completely forgot about it. Hans, does this make sense? local normalflags = states.get("rsync.flags.normal") local deleteflags = "" if (destination:find("texmf$") or destination:find("context$")) and (not environment.argument("keep")) then deleteflags = states.get("rsync.flags.delete") end command = format("%s %s %s %s'%s' '%s'", bin, normalflags, deleteflags, url, archives, destination) This only adds the --delete flag to texmf-context and texmf, others are not touched. The consequence is that this won't delete your pdftex binary automatically if you decide that you only need LuaTeX one day, but I think that it makes sense as a temporary fix since: - it prevents deleting font cache - it reduces the need to recreate the formats when nothing has been updated Mojca ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

Hi, Hans and Mojca: first, (to Mojca) the first-setup.sh script still deletes fontconfig cache when updating on windows. second, (to Hans) unicode-letters.tex is read when we dump plain TeX or LaTeX format in TeXLive. This file is wrote by Jonathan Kew in order to initialize XeTeX. It defines many important unicode properties into XeTeX. However, ConTeXt do not load that file when dumping the xetex format. The file is not even in ConTeXt distribution. I suggest that the file should be loaded. You can find the file in http://scripts.sil.org/svn-public/xetex/TRUNK/texmf/tex/generic/xetex/unicode-letters.tex XeTeX's plain TeX ini file can be find in http://scripts.sil.org/svn-public/xetex/TRUNK/texmf/tex/xetex/config/xetex.ini If the file is not loaded, thousands of lines should be copied to third party modules (like the module I announce on the mailing list today) in order to support some language correctly. This method is quite messy, not to say inefficient for loading.
