[nysbirds-l] Glaucous-winged Gull, Beacon Waterfront, Dutchess Co.

2024-01-21 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Bruce Nott, finder of the Neotropic Cormorant at the Newburgh Waterfront, found
another mega yesterday, a third winter Glaucous-winged Gull at the same
location. The bird was sought around both sides of the river this morning and
was finally refound by Liam Brock et al roosting and preening on the ice on the
Beacon side around 1:00 pm, where it was seen by many birders. It flew off to
the north at one point but did return to that location thereafter.
Good luck if you go for it.

[nysbirds-l] Peregrines and Dovekies

2024-01-13 Thread Patricia Lindsay
We’re watching a pair of Peregrine Falcons repeatedly bringing Dovekies into
the parking lot at Smith Point Park, Suffolk Co. and feeding on them, after our
second big wind and rain event this week. First one was found by Mike Cooper.
We re up to three now in the last hour. We’ll try and ascertain where they’re
plucking them from, presumably the bay.
Given that we also had 2 Dovekies in the Fire Island Inlet with little effort
on the last storm it seems likely many have been displaced to LI’s south shore
bays and ponds.

[nysbirds-l] Cave Swallow at Robert Moses SP Suffolk

Sorry for late post, phone troubles. Not chaseable-flew across north to south
in front of my parked car as I was examining gulls in Field 5 at 3:30. I jumped
out and followed it in bins as it disappeared to the west along the dunes. I
had about 10 Tree Swallows a few minutes later but no others in the next 20
minutes. Worth checking West End tomorrow morning.

[nysbirds-l] Subscribers to The Kingbird (journal of the NYS Ornithological Association)

2023-10-06 Thread Patricia Lindsay
We have recently had some inquiries about missing reports in the latest
publication of *The Kingbird*, Vol. 73 No.1, which was mailed out last week.

Due to a backlog of excellent articles, and in an effort to mitigate
publication delays, Shai Mitra (editor) has made the decision to publish
the Fall 2022 season in two back-to-back issues, the first containing
Regional reports and associated photos for Regions 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 9.
The second issue will be coming out in late October and will have the
reports and photos for the remaining Regions, as well as the highlights of
the season.

This is explained in the Editor's Note and as a forward to the reports in
73-1, but perhaps should also have been noted within the reports section as
well.

Sincerely,
Shai Mitra

[nysbirds-l] 10th Annual Seatuck LI Birding Challenge Recap

2023-10-06 Thread Patricia Lindsay
...with apologies for the delay.

The 10th Annual Seatuck LI Birding Challenge was conducted on 16 September
this year, in very pleasant weather. As the rosy fingers of dawn lit the
sky, it was 61° and mostly cloudy under northwest winds, warming up into
the mid 70s and clearing to mostly sunny skies, with low humidity.

This year’s competition felt very different; we did not have any junior
teams competing, and the formidable, perennial champion Pteam Ptarmigeddon
defected to go storm-chasing in Massachusetts. This left only three teams
in the field, with a total of 12 participants. There were two Island-wide
teams, The Four Harbors Herons and the Small Day Birders, and the Captree
Bombay Hornadays reprised their Big Sit at the Fire Island Hawkwatch,
initiated in 2018. There was no coverage on the east end of Long Island,
nor for Brooklyn, and the water level was unfortunately quite high at
Jamaica Bay, with fewer than normal shorebirds detected. Not surprisingly,
the overall total of 131 species was quite reduced from our long-term
average of 167, and included no new species, so the cumulative list total
remains at 247 species over the ten years.

Among the many highlights were the healthy number of warbler species seen
by the Four Harbors Herons, including Tennessee, Cape May, Bay-breasted,
and Wilson’s; a Broad-winged Hawk spotted by the Small Day Birders, a bird
that is always scarce on Long Island, away from the flyways of the city
parks; and the mash-up of migrants, including a nocturnal migrant
Gray-cheeked Thrush and a cooperative day-flying Common Nighthawk, past the
the Fire Island Hawkwatch.

The three teams’ totals were remarkably similar, and with so few teams in
the field, the number of “saves” (species not seen by any other team) for
all the teams reached record numbers. The Four Harbors Herons took first
place with 89 species, which included 15 saves. The Captree Bombay
Hornadays, a hybrid mixture of several past team groupings, came in second
with 85 species and 22 saves (retaining the Hunters’ Hoard), and the Small
Day Birders followed up with 82 species and 16 saves. The compilation was
festive and intimate, and a great chance for the 12 participants and the
Seatuck folks to reconnect.

Thanks to Enrico Nardone, Peter Walsh, and the Seatuck team for organizing
and hosting this enjoyable friendly competition. For more information on
this important organization and information on this annual event, go to

www.seatuck.org/birding-challenge

We hope to see everyone back next year, and as always, we welcome new teams
to join us!

[nysbirds-l] Seatuck Birding Challenge Saturday September 16

2023-09-09 Thread Patricia Lindsay
The Seatuck Birding Challenge is back again this year - it's scheduled for
next *Saturday, September 16*. And, it's our 10th anniversary edition! To
celebrate, we're providing a $10 discount on the compilation dinner price!
We hope you can join us again!

Seatuck’s Birding Challenge is Long Island’s only island-wide birding
competition. It helps promote bird watching, wildlife conservation and open
space preservation across the region – and the event generates an important
one-day snapshot of early fall bird populations across Long Island. The
event is open to all levels of experience, from expert birders to complete
novices. Fall migration provides large numbers of birds and a great
diversity of species.

[nysbirds-l] Captree June Count, 3 June 2023

2023-06-05 Thread Patricia Lindsay
On Saturday 3 Jun 2023, thirty-one observers conducted the Captree June
Count in southwestern Suffolk County, LI. It was the first cloudy day in
many days, but without rain. A north-northeast breeze contributed to
productive seawatching without unduly impeding the detection of marshbirds
and landbirds. The early date of this year’s count fortuitously coincided
with a definite flight of Neotropical migrant passerines, and the resulting
total of 142 species easily bested the previous record of 138 (2021) and
greatly exceeded the nine-year average of 129.

Five new species and one new supra-specific taxon were added to the
cumulative list of the “modern era,” 2015-present: Eurasian Collared-Dove,
Lesser Yellowlegs (5), Red-necked Phalarope (377), Least Flycatcher, and
Magnolia Warbler (4). The flight of Red-necked Phalaropes observed from
Robert Moses State Park on 3 Jun followed several days of much higher than
usual occurrence along Long Island’s ocean shore and was an astonishing
highlight for those who witnessed it.

Among 26 new maxima, the most notable were 30 Wood Duck, 17 Black Duck, 33
Wild Turkey, 83 Chimney Swifts (perhaps reflecting at least in part a late
push of migrants, as swifts and several species of swallows have been seen
migrating along the outer beaches 2-4 Jun), 129 Black Skimmer (observed
within the newly expanding Common Tern colony at Democrat Point, where it
is hoped they will nest), 275 Wilson’s Storm-Petrel, 461 Common Grackle, 14
Blackpoll Warbler, and 15 American Redstart. Both of the possible
explanations for the high count of the last species are likely not obvious
to most observers and deserve some explanation. One possibility is that
this species is following the examples of Warbling Vireo and Northern
Rough-winged Swallow in expanding its breeding distribution into the
coastal plain of south-central Long Island, where all three were previously
(and somewhat inexplicably) absent or nearly absent as breeders. The second
is that the total reflects mostly migrants, as American Redstart occurs in
the latest spring flights on Long Island, along with more familiar late
passage-migrants like several recorded on this year’s CJC (e.g., Least and
Acadian flycatchers, Magnolia and Blackpoll Warblers)--but also like
several other common breeding species whose late-migrating populations are
less obvious and familiar (e.g., Red-eyed Vireo and Common Yellowthroat).

One late migrant species that was decidedly *not* augmented much by birds
in passage was Eastern Wood-Pewee, which was among nine regularly recorded
species tallied at a new minimum for the modern period of the count. Others
in this category that deserve watching include Clapper Rail, Downy
Woodpecker, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Brown Thrasher (completely absent from
the mainland and represented by just four individuals on the barrier
beaches), Eastern Towhee, Baltimore Oriole, and Prairie Warbler. All of
these were among the 18 species whose totals were 70% or less than their
nine-year averages. Others in this category included Yellow-billed Cuckoo,
Whip-poor-will, Field Sparrow, Brown-headed Cowbird, and Indigo Bunting.
The similarity in the habitats favored by many of these species makes their
coincident low abundances concerning.

No fewer than 19 regularly occurring species were tallied at 150% or more
of their nine-year averages. Besides the new maxima noted above, it is
worth drawing attention to 46 Common Loon (still migrating heavily along
the ocean shore), 583 Common Tern, 113 Forster’s Tern, and 116 Purple
Martin. Each of the last three, like several of the species seting new
maxima, are definitely increasing as breeders within the circle.

Three rarities of very different sorts were recorded: a Eurasian Collared
Dove in Oakdale, a large stercorariid (either a skua or a Pomarine Jaeger),
distantly over the ocean, and a count-week Prothonotary Warbler in Islip.

The full results of this and past years’ counts are available on request.

Many thanks to all of our participants, whose dedication and skill continue
to add to our knowledge of Long Island’s changing avifauna, and especially
to Bob and Michelle Grover, for hosting a very festive and enjoyable
compilation at their home.

[nysbirds-l] Bar-tailed Godwit Cupsogue Suffolk Co.

2022-07-20 Thread Patricia Lindsay
The godwit appeared at 7:02 on the flats, feeding and preening with the gulls
and terns. We were able to confirm that the tail and rump are barred as far up
as we could discern, as is the underwing, consistent with the Siberian race of
the species. Thanks to Mike McBrien for the astute ID from the original photo.

[nysbirds-l] Mottled Duck update, Ketchams Creek, Suffolk Co.

2022-04-12 Thread Patricia Lindsay
This evening Ernst Mutchnick observed the Mottled Duck and it’s mate around
7:15, first from the south end of the creek, then with other observers from the
culvert on the north end as the ducks made their way up along the phrags. At
7:55 they disappeared into their hiding spot on the west side of the creek, a
good place to start looking early in the morning.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Long Island's rare geese

2022-01-14 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Thanks to everyone for your support and understanding of this sensitive
issue.

Ronnie, Thank you for pointing this out, absolutely, in fact I neglected to
mention this in my original email and was intending to send a second email
asking anyone who agrees and is willing, to cross-post to the various other
social media outlets (none of which I belong to).

Elliot, As far as the eBird control is concerned, this is out of my
purview, but I would ask the eBird folks reading this whether this is
something they consider important enough to consider.

Darlene, YES, I believe keeping the lists hidden from public will work.

All, I encourage everyone to call DEC if they see anything illegal going
on. Long Island is DEC Region 1. The general number is 631-444-0200. They
can at least direct you to the enforcement number, which I seem to have
misplaced after calling them a previous year when we saw hunters gunning
down dozens of Canada Geese coming in to their decoys from their perch in a
field. Turned out it was legal at that time. The hunters just piled them
all up and left them there, not sure what happened to the carcasses later.

[nysbirds-l] Long Island's rare geese

2022-01-14 Thread Patricia Lindsay
With the hunting season now upon us, and the Waterfowl Count starting on
Saturday, we would like to make a serious plea that birders and
photographers not post reports of rare geese from Riverhead and the East
End of Long Island on eBird, Facebook, this listserv, or any other social
media platform until the end of the season.

It has become very clear here on LI that hunters have caught on to eBird,
the listservs, and social media, and are targeting the rare geese (and
ducks also) using information obtained from birders. One of the only
Pink-footed Geese in the Riverhead area last winter was shot this way, and
we personally know of other cases involving Ross's and Barnacle Geese (and
King Eiders, etc.). A Greylag Goose, very likely of wild origins and if so,
extremely rare, was also shot in this area a few years ago.

The problem is most acute in the Riverhead area and on the South Fork, from
November to the end of hunting season (9 Feb for Canada Goose, 6 Mar for
Snow Goose). We understand that the birding community does not want war
with the hunters, but the situation here is very sensitive--everybody knows
the very limited number of specific fields used by the geese, and it seems
a shame that the rarer species are being exposed to this level of danger.

We would suggest Cackling, Ross's, Barnacle, Pink-footed, and Greater
White-fronted Geese, and of course any mega rare species, seen in these
areas not be reported until hunting season ends or at least until the geese
seem to have moved on.

Cackling and Greater White-fronted Goose may be taken legally as part of
the Canada Goose bag limits. Snow and Ross's Geese may be taken as part of
the Snow Goose bag limits. The others are not listed as game species on the
DEC website so apparently were taken illegally.

By making this one small sacrifice, we might just be able to save a few
birds and get to enjoy them longer.

Thanks for your consideration.

[nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird Heckscher SP, Suffolk, flyby

2021-11-04 Thread Patricia Lindsay
This morning as I was leaving Heckscher SP around 9:45 I noticed a small
flock of Am. Robins flying over my car with a smaller, yellow-bellied bird
trailing. I jumped out to get bins on it, and fortunately it circled back
around and over me giving me a decent, more extended look. The flock flew
to the north and disappeared over the trees, so not exactly chaseable,
though it could possibly settle in somewhere in the park.

Thanks for the reminder, Andrew.

[nysbirds-l] Seatuck Long Island Birding Challenge, Saturday September 25

2021-09-20 Thread Patricia Lindsay
The eighth annual Long Island Birding Challenge, hosted by the Seatuck
Organization, will be held this coming Saturday. September 25th.

Due to ongoing covid restraints, all birders are asked to participate alone
or in small groups and comply with all local health guidelines. Teammates
will not be required to be together to identify birds as a group.

Again this year, teams and individuals will be limited to one of five areas
on Long Island: Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, Western Suffolk and Eastern
Suffolk (see website below for specific Suffolk designations). Teams will
combine individual lists at the end of the day to create their total team
tally.

Official checklists must be submitted by 10:00 pm Saturday, to
st...@seatuck.org

A Zoom meeting will be held shortly after, date and time to be announced.
Last year we had eight teams in the field with a total of 29 participants,
and all five designated areas were represented. The Zoom meeting was lively
and well-attended, and we hope to have the same wonderful turnout and
excitement this year.

Registration is free but donations to the Seatuck Organization will be much
appreciated; a link can be found on the registration page.

For more information about the event, to find the downloadable/printable
official checklist, and to register, please visit

https://seatuck.org/birding-challenge/

Hope you can make it!

Patricia Lindsay, Shai Mitra, and the entire Seatuck team.

Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Black-throated GRAY Warbler - Tobay (Nassau Co) 4/28

2021-04-28 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Follow up and additional info on the Black-throated Gray Warbler:

This bird was found by Jack Carlson around 11:20 this morning, in the JFK
Sanctuary at Tobay Beach. Jack saw the bird well, including the yellow spot
before the eye. He quickly went back for his camera but then could not
relocate the bird. I checked the area at my first opportunity later this
afternoon, and did not find it, but it could very well still be in the
area. It would be worth keeping a sharp eye out at West End Jones Beach
tomorrow as well.

During the week there is no one at the booth, but you do risk getting
ticketed if you don't display the JFK permit while parked in the sanctuary.

Good luck if you try, and please post any updates.

Hi all,

I am sharing a thirdhand but strongly suggestive report of a Black-throated
Gray Warbler at Tobay Beach this morning. I have no further info as to the
location. Please be advised that this is a Town of Oyster Bay beach area,
which is mostly private and pricey for residents, and the more accessible
JFK Memorial Sanctuary area technically requires a permit to access.

Best,

[nysbirds-l] Bean Goose update, Saratoga County

2021-03-14 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Despite the much appreciated efforts of Rich Guthrie, Gary Chapin, and others
to track it for us during our long drive, the goose and it's 20 or so Canada
friends had disappeared into the private and patrolled trailer park before we
arrived around 5:30 this evening. We waited until they flew out—the trailer
park flock and about 100 in all between 7:15 and 7:30 coming from other points
east. Conveniently they all landed on the water where we could see them until
it got too dark. No luck but we can’t be completely sure it didn’t sneak past.
It was definitely not in the group of 29 that flew out from the near trailer
park at 7:15, in good light.
Good luck if you try for it tomorrow.

[nysbirds-l] Southern Nassau County Christmas Bird Count

2020-11-29 Thread Patricia Lindsay
The Southern Nassau CBC will be held this season on Saturday, January 2nd,
2021.

While we will certainly miss our gathering at Otto's afterward, in lieu of
the compilation we will have a Zoom meeting following the count during
which participants and parties can share the highlights of the day.

Below is a link to the Audubon rules and guidelines to ensure all
participants remain safe during this pandemic. Leaders and participants are
asked to review the guidelines and we ask that everyone abides by them. We
completely understand if you choose not to participate this season, and
hope that we'll see you at next year's count under more normal
circumstances.

If you have a relatively set routine on this count, please contact your
party leader to confirm coverage and data transfer protocols, keeping the
new safety guidlelines in mind.

If you're unsure of where to go, please contact Pat or Shai.

Looking forward to another great count this year!

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Phalaropes Jamaica Bay Queens

2020-10-08 Thread Patricia Lindsay
The two Wilson's Phalaropes continue, feeding frantically with Lesser
Yellowlegs this afternoon 4:30 - 5:00 pm. along the southeast edge of the
East Pond. A Peregrine Falcon strafed the pond several times but the birds
returned each time.

I also got distant scope views at what I believe is a juvenile Sora along
the east edge, in and out of the phrags. A nice variety of ducks was also
fun to sort through. I will post an eBird checklist tomorrow.

We inadvertently left out the names of the winning team members. Pteam
Ptarmigeddon: Tim Dunn, John Gluth, Pete Morris, and Taylor Sturm.

Contrary to some rumors floating around, the omission was not a further
example of malfeasance on the part of the Outlaws, now dethroned as the

I saw this bird yesterday around 2:20 or so. I got distant but decent scope
views of it facing me (no side views) and terrible phone-scoped photos which i
will not upload to eBird though i will share them with the reviewers tomorrow.

[nysbirds-l] Sixth Annual Seatuck LI Challenge Results

2019-10-03 Thread Patricia Lindsay
The 6th Annual Seatuck LI Birding Challenge was conducted on 28 September this
year, and despite the date being later than in past years, the weather was
still more like summer than fall. The persistent tendency for the wind to be
lightly from the northeast and the warm, sunny weather no doubt was responsible
for smaller numbers and less variety of migrant species than would be expected,
many of them most likely leftover from the last good flight day. Many folks
rued the slow pace and low number of species found on this hot day, yet
enthusiasm was still high all the way to the five o’clock hour when the
compilation and celebrations began at the lovely Scully mansion.

Competing this year were five senior teams with a total of 21 participants and
six high school teams with over a dozen (not all names were submitted). Senior
teams found 155 species, and the high school teams found 41 species; they added
two not seen by the senior teams, Ring-necked Duck and Least Tern, bringing the
total to 157 species. Not bad for a day in the doldrums!

The cumulative total for the six years now stands at 235, with four species
added this year: Lesser Scaup (Bird Brainz and Four Harbors Herons at
Connetquot River SP), Northern Saw-whet Owl (Pteam Ptarmigeddon, Northport),
Winter Wren (Outlaws, Southards Pond Park), and White-crowned Sparrow (Four
Harbors Herons, Jones Beach West End).

The Outlaws took first place with 113 species and 15 “saves” (species not seen
by any other team). All of the Outlaws have long histories competing in the
challenge, often together in various combinations, and generally producing very
competitive totals—but always short of first place. Thus, it was a satisfying
reward to finally wrest the coveted trophy from the younger whipper-snapper
teams!

In second place were the Four Harbors Herons, with 107, and in third place,
Pteam Ptarmigeddon with 100. The Three-legged Ravens! took first prize for the
high school teams, seeing an impressive 31 of the 41 total species for that
group. All the senior teams came in with multiple “saves”, making for a nice
variety of the more unusual species.

Thanks to Enrico Nardone and the Seatuck team for organizing and hosting this
increasingly popular and exciting event. For more information on this important
organization, visit the website at:

If you would like a copy of the spreadsheet breaking out the teams, species and
saves, please email me off the listserv.

We hope to see everyone back next year, and as always, we welcome new teams to
join us!

[nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern flyover Nickerson Beach, Nassau Co.

2019-06-17 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Shai Mitra, Pat Martin and I just had a Sandwich Tern fly over as we were
getting into our cars. It came from the east or northeast heading southwest.
Shai is running back down to the beach to see if it lands or hangs around.
